A lot of people think that John Wayne’s B movie are rubbish and should be dismissed straight away. The other day I saw my first Duke B movie 'Winds from the called wasteland' and thought that it was very good. My question is what are your favourite Duke B movies.

 Big Jake,

You're talking about "Idol of the Crowds," released September 30, 1937 distributed by Universal Pictures. Sounds like a pretty good movie. It is out on VHS, but not on DVD.

I think that Dukes B movies were under rated, some of them are pretty good, her are some of may favorites from those:

The Man from Utah
The Oregon Trail
Adventures End
The Sea Spoilers
Winds of the Wasteland

These are not in order, but they are pretty good. Of course not like his A list movies but they are still worth seeing.

Here are some of our favorite "B" movies:

The Big Trail

Tall in the Saddle (this one was especially good; Ward Bond is in it, and his character is definitely NOT friends with John Wayne's character)

Saga of Death Valley

I have especially enjoyed the ones with Gabby Hayes in them. I have both original black and white, and colorized versions, and although I realize some may consider this heresy, I really enjoy the colorized versions.

There's probably more I could say, but it's getting late . . . :(

Big Jake,

It is my understanding (and I could be wrong - it's happened before :) ) that movies before Stagecoach are B movies and after Stagecoach are the A movies.

If that's the case, I stand corrected on Tall in the Saddle, which came out in 1943. John Wayne looks so young in it, I thought it was older than it actually is. The Big Trail, on the other hand, was in 1930.

What is the means of determining whether a movie is A or B? I guess I could perhaps stand to be educated on this issue.

An A movie has higher production values good cast, feature length story etc Big Trail is defiently not a B movie. It was the failure of this movie at the box office that relegated Wayne to B movies.

Walmart is really helping with my B movie collection. I'm seeing John Wayne movies I've never seen before, and they are all good.
