The High and the Mighty and many more movies we all are waiting for are on this list.

Here is today's rumor and fact mill link.

I'm really pleased to hear about the impending release of "Ivanhoe" and "King Solomon's Mines" on disc as they're both on my list of all-time favorite films.

Paramount's big news was its official confirmation of an agreement with the Michael Wayne estate to release several Batjac productions on DVD over the next two years, beginning in May 2005. . . . . . Also to be released are five other films produced by Batjac: Man in the Vault (1956, with William Campbell), Plunder of the Sun (1953, with Glenn Ford), Ring of Fear (1954, with Clyde Beatty), Seven Men from Now (1956, with Randolph Scott), and Track of the Cat (1954, with Robert Mitchum).

Could anyone tell me and the board about the four movies that are release through Batjac. These movies are not John Wayne movies. Love to learn from you.

Cheers B)

Here is a quote for those interested in any of Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns. Looks like they will be getting the SE treatment. This is from The Digital Bits.

We can also reliably confirm something that's been floating around the Net in the last few days (it was originally reported on the Spaghetti Western Web Board). MGM's remaining Sergio Leone titles, including Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and Duck You Sucker) ARE all currently in production for SE release on DVD. Those can tentatively be expected later in 2005. Great news any way you slice it!

Hi

I watched The Scalphunters the other Sunday on television I thought it was good picture with a great deal of humour, with Shelly Winters Telly Savalas and Ossie Davis,They announced Davis's death a couple of Days Later.

I also saw the Fred MacMurray Good Day For A Hanging but it was called something different something like the Night Hawk, a very strange film and a strange part for Fred MacMurray to play

They Died with Their Boots on and Dodge City will do for me.

:cowboy: They are good movies. However, I wish they would also release The Unconquored w/ Gary Cooper, Allegheny Uprising w/ The Duke and Claire Trevor, Fort Apache of course, Northwest Passage w/ Spencer Tracy, and Walter Brennan, The Savage w/ Charlton Heston and Milburn Stone, Major Dundee w/ Charlton Heston, James Coburn and Jim Hutton, and The Last Outpost w/ Ronald Reagan and Bruce Bennett.

RingoKid, I read that MAJOR DUNDEE is supposed to get a re-release in theatres this year. The film will be restored to it's original length and the old music score will be replaced with either something new or the one that Peckinpah originally wanted. I'll try and find the article for you.

It's mentioned in this (http://www.sonypicturesrepertory.com/hot.html) thread.

:cowboy: Hi Cole, thank you for that news! I absolutely loved Major Dundee being it has so many of my favorites in it. Also having Ben Johnson as a Confederate Soldier helped. I wonder if a re-release means countrywide or just in select cities? If so, here in Corpus Christi, we almost never see a re-release on anything--except recently on the The Passion of the Christ. I also read that they are working on re-releasing the movie: Big Red One. Lee Marvin, Mark Hamill & Siegfried Rauch made that movie a masterpiece. And lastly, they are talking about releasing several of the Three Stooges shorts as a 2 hr deal. I'd love to see the boys on the big screen as well.

This news made a somewhat dulled day, much brighter. :D

Glad the news made your day, RingoKid! I wouldn't mind seeing MAJOR DUNDEE in the theatre and in it's restored condition. I've only seen parts of the atrocious pan and scan version on TV. Don't know how much better it will be now, but any chance to see ANY old movie will be a treat.

Hi Cole, that goes for me too. I would love the chance to see any old classic on the big screen. I only have seen one such classic on the big screen and that was during the summer when i was about 12. The local theater played Gone With the Wind as a matinee movie every day during that summer. Needless to say, the theater was not packed. I was with a friend and there might have been 3-4 others in there as well. I bet it would have made much more money had a movie w/ The Duke had been played.

In a way, I feel robbed because I have never seen The Duke on the big screen. :(

Oh I forgot, I have seen one other classic on the big screen. This one was House Of Wax and it was in 3-d.

Here is some more interesting information about Major Dundee and a interview with the lead producer from Columbia. It is rather long but, here you go:

A Few (More) Words with… Columbia Pictures' Grover Crisp

RAH: It's now been four months since we last spoke about the work you were completing in restoring Sam Peckinpah's Major Dundee, and I know a lot of people are eager to see it.

GC: I am really excited about it and anxious for people to see it. It appears in theaters beginning April 8 in New York, April 15 in other cities, and on DVD around the end of May, so the wait won't be too long.

RAH: I know this is a longer version never before released. Can you tell us a little more about the additional footage?

GC: There are three completely new scenes in the Extended Version, which is what we settled on calling it. In addition, there are bits and pieces of typical Peckinpah touches sprinkled throughout. Things like isolated shots of children observing the adult characters, somewhat like in The Wild Bunch. In all, there is new material strung out over ten of the sixteen reels of the picture. I think the new footage adds dimension and depth to the character of Dundee, the relationship of Dundee and Tyreen (the Richard Harris character), but definitely there are key plot points that now make sense. For example, there is the character of the Indian scout Riago, who is talked about constantly, and seen, throughout the film, with Dundee and Potts (James Coburn) at odds over Riago's "loyalty". Dundee doesn't trust him, but Potts does. In the Extended Version, we not only learn which side he is on at the end of the film, but see what happens to him, and in rather graphic detail. In the original shorter version, the character just disappears and is never mentioned or heard from again. This might also have been a censor issue, as clearly some other things that were cut probably were. In the shorter version, Ryan, the young bugler who narrates the film, seems to go off and spend the night with a young woman in the Mexican village sequence. In the Extended Version, there is no doubt. A number of things like that crop up throughout the film, in addition to the complete scenes that are now back in.

RAH: Did you come across anything else?

GC: As we were in the process of finishing the feature, I started to look at the trailer material that we had gathered together. Bill Karydes, on my staff, had researched trailers or any featurettes that could be put on the DVD. So, when I was watching the collection of trailers and foreign main title elements, there was a "trailer" that was mislabeled. It turned out to be a substantial fragment of what would have been an exhibitor's promo reel, something to send around to exhibitors to whet their appetite and, hopefully, book the film. So, I was watching this reel, which was just a loose collection of scenes that are in the film and, about ten minutes into it, suddenly there is a scene I had never seen before, but one that I knew had been shot. It is a knife fight between Potts (Coburn) and Sgt. Gomez that takes place during the nighttime celebration in the Mexican village sequence. The nighttime sequence is not in the original short version at all, but is in the Extended Version, though seriously truncated. This knife fight was clearly the center piece of the sequence.

RAH: Were you able to integrate it into the full restored version?

GC: Unfortunately, no. The problem is that the sequence as it is in the promo reel is not complete; it starts and ends abruptly. It is essentially the middle part of the sequence. So, we didn't have the scenes or shots or audio to bridge in and out of this fight scene. But, I must say, it makes for a great little "deleted" scene for the bonus material on the DVD.

RAH: There will be bonus material, then, besides the trailer?

GC: There will be about an hour of added value footage: outtakes, the deleted scene mentioned, the original trailer, a newly-created Extended Version trailer narrated by L.Q. Jones, an essay about the making and unmaking of the film, art stills, posters, commentaries, an extended excerpt from a documentary on Peckinpah, some additional shots deleted from scenes that are in the film, a featurette in both black and white and color, additional promo reel surviving fragments.

RAH: Two different featurettes?

GC: No. There was a featurette made at the time of production called Riding for a Fall, which was basically about the stuntmen and their activities. It unfortunately no longer exists in 35mm, only in 16mm black and white reduction. It is certainly interesting and has some behind-the-scenes shots of the crew and their camera set-ups. We managed to locate a color version which is, believe it or not, only in 8mm, so naturally not in as good a shape as the 16mm. But we thought it interesting to put both on the disc anyway. It adds more value.

RAH: All of this sounds really great - this is the kind of product we look for from SPHE.

GC: We have high hopes for the film in theaters and hope they also like the DVD when it comes out. The fans are owed top quality and we're trying to give it to them with this.

RAH: One of the most important changes for this new version, which we have not discussed before, is that you have taken the rather dramatic step of completely replacing the original music score with a newly-composed one. How did that come about?

GC: In a very odd way, actually. I screened an early answer print for the key Peckinpah historians and scholars, including Nick Redman, Paul Seydor, David Weddle, Garner Simmons, just to show them what we were creating and also for background for their commentary on the DVD. This would have been late November. They had not seen this longer version before, but of course needed to for their commentary. In the ensuing conversation, the subject of the music score came up and it was evidently a sore spot with Peckinpah in that he felt it was the wrong type of music for his film, and that it seriously hurt the film. He had no input into the score at that point because the film had been completely taken away from him by then. The original Daniele Amfitheatrof score is a fairly standard action Western cowboys-vs-indians-type of score, and Dundee is not that kind of film. This is not a criticism of Amfitheatrof, by the way, who basically just did what he was hired to do - which was create a score that would help the studio "sell" the film as an entertaining cowboy action movie. But the film, as you know, is anything but that. The sentiment in the discussion was that it was too bad the score couldn't be replaced with one more akin to the actual themes of the film and more along the lines of the scores for Peckinpah's other films where he did have input. Especially since this was a new version closer to Peckinpah's original. I understood the issues with the original score for the same reasons as the director and everyone else, but actually replacing it was not even a remote idea. So, we bounced the idea off of the legal department and the music department at the studio and, essentially, the answer was there was no reason why it couldn't be done. With that decision, we had serious discussions whether or not we should try this, not just from an ethical perspective, but historical and aesthetic perspectives. The original soundtrack and score had already been preserved and restored, and would still exist. But, in the end, it seemed that the film itself deserved a chance to be the best it could be, and a new score combined with the additional footage might help bring it closer to Peckinpah's original vision.

RAH: This was pretty late in the process to be thinking about this, wasn't it?

GC: No kidding. I was ready to go in to oversee the HD transfer in December and this was still an infant idea. But all involved wanted to try this approach and the theatrical division releasing the film endorsed it in a big way, the biggest supporter being Michael Schlesinger, who oversees distribution of our library titles, so we decided to look into it.

RAH: Where did you find a composer who could do this, do it quickly, and do a good job?

GC: I was aware of a young composer named Christopher Caliendo, who had scored a silent film for Columbia a few years earlier, plus a film for Turner Classic Movies and a few other things. Importantly, though, was that I was aware of his own personal compositions for guitar, flute, chamber music, jazz, calypso -- quite a varied background. I also knew of his classical orchestral endeavors. So, I contacted him to see if he was interested and sent him a tape of the film. He immediately came back to me with what he felt the film was about thematically, and he nailed in a few sentences what the film is about. So, I thought maybe we have a good fit here. It was an extremely tight schedule. He had to compose about 80 minutes of music, orchestrate it, get the musicians together, and then he even conducted the orchestra himself over a short two days of recording in January. So, we are talking about five to six weeks from just thinking about it to actually having it finished. I think the end result is great. Christopher, in my opinion, really rose to the occasion and created an excellent score. If you wanted something to compare it to, and without detracting from its own uniqueness, I would say it is in the vain of similar Jerry Goldsmith or Elmer Bernstein or Alex North scores for similar pictures. Big where it needs to be, intimate where it needs to be, but really full-bodied and complex, fitting its subject perfectly. It captures the internal discord within the character of Dundee and the relationship of the other characters. And the true test for any film score, for me at least, is if it holds up on listening to it by itself, and this one really does. Key Peckinpah enthusiasts and film score experts who have seen the film and heard this new soundtrack are quite ecstatic about the achievement.

RAH: I commend you for taking the initiative to get this film re-scored, since the old one was rather notorious for its inappropriateness. But there might also be some potential criticism for having created this new soundtrack.

GC: This was not a decision made lightly. This just happens to be a very unique situation, a set of circumstances where we have the documented proof that would even support an idea like this. And this is not something I think purists - of which I am one, by the way - should worry will become a commonplace thing in the future. That, I couldn't imagine, and I certainly can't think of another title within the Sony library that would fit this circumstance. One reason I have always insisted that this cannot be called a director's cut is because it isn't. On the other hand, the original short version wasn't the director's cut, either, and for the very reasons that we have attempted to correct with both picture and sound. So, in the end, which version is closer to the director's intentions with this particular film and closer to the achievements of his later career path, which are clearly traceable? I think the answer is there for people to decide on their own because we never envisioned replacing the original score and soundtrack without also making the original available at the same time.

RAH: So, you mean both tracks will be on the DVD?

GC: Absolutely. People can debate the ethics or aesthetics of our decision, which is good, but it would have been irresponsible and, I think, unfair to ignore the original soundtrack's existence, which is why it is on the disc. Consumers can watch the film whichever way they choose. Remember, the original soundtrack has been preserved and restored to the best quality available and will always be around. And if theaters want to run prints with the original mono track, we can provide that. Another point I should make, and this is very important, is that the new soundtrack is only for the new Extended Version of the film. The original short released version of the film from 1965 still retains, and always will, the original mono soundtrack with the original music score, unchanged. That is what that film was and is. The new music score was composed specifically for the Extended Version, a version not previously released or seen, which is why it is so unique. I think these are important aspects to keep in mind. But if people, after listening to both, don't immediately see the validation of what we were trying to achieve, I will be greatly surprised. The new soundtrack is that good.

RAH: I can't remember a situation like this before. This is bound to be quite a conversation piece, a must-have DVD.

GC: Well, this is not exactly precedent setting, since scores have been replaced before, just not for some time. And composing a new score for a film is not exactly a new idea in terms of the history of cinema. Films in the silent period had scores written for them at the time, but many were altered even in the period in which they were being exhibited. How many times has Metropolis had a new score composed to it over the years? In any case, I just hope people watch, and listen, to this film and approach it with the openness it deserves. It has been overlooked for decades, mostly because of the things that happened to it after it was taken away from its primary creator - Peckinpah. This was our honest attempt to bring it back to as close as we feel we can to what the director intended.

RAH: This is one of the most anticipated studio catalogue title in some time. There is huge interest in it. I can't wait to see it in theaters and on the upcoming DVD.

Hi E.J, MANY many thanks for this. Sorry I could not reply to you sooner, I tried yesterday but was still having some trouble with this computer.

Anyway, I will definately be buying that Errol Flynn collection (2) as well as Captain Horatio Hornblower.

And for Todd:

I DEFINATELY do recommend watching: Captain Horatio Hornblower w/ Gregory Peck. This movie is one of the greatest of it's kind and I give it an even tie w/ Flynns: Sea Hawk. Also, HH is in color and though now appx 55 years old, the sounds and colors are magnificent.

Hi

Interesting about the warner brothers collection and Captain Horatio Hornblower which is one of my favourite pictures not only of gegory Peck but of all time, especially as some of the scenes were shot in Portsmouth naval base, and featured some of the men I worked with climbing the ratlines. Not that I was working there (or anywhere for that matter) at the time.

EJ, if you hear that Edge of Darkness is going to be released--it is another pretty good Flynn film. I only saw it once and that was about 20 years ago. If I remember correctly, I think in this one, I think he was some sort of Allied Agent or a Commando or Resistance leader. I also remember that Bewitched (Samamtha Stevens's mother ((I forget the actresses name)) the one who played Endora, is also in that Flynn film. Anyway, please let me know if you hear anything about this film being released.

Thanks, best regards and I owe you -- C.

Hi Arthur, thanks for this as well. I think I will take a look at Ebay and see if I can find someone selling those. Im also hoping to see if I can get some sort of studio print from that movie. Would look nice on my wall next to my small and original collection of Harpers Weekly newspaper covers from teh US Civil War as well as the Franco-Prussian War.

Ringo, Edge of Darkness is one of my favorite Flynn movies. Hate to tell you though, Agnes Moorehead is not in this one. You might have her mixed up with Dame Judith Anderson, who is in the movie. They did have a slight resemblance to each other back then. Also, besides Flynn and Anderson, Ann Sheridan, Walter Huston and, Ruth Gordon are in this. It takes place in Norway and Flynn wants to flee to England to hook up with the Brits to fight the Nazis. However, he gets word that England is going to send them arms for their resistance so, he stays. There's a nice action packed shootout with the Germans in the last half hour of the movie.
More Flynn movies need to be released. I think that second set that's coming, you'll be able to buy them separately, also. I'd definitely like to see Virginia City, San Antonio, Silver River, Montana, Rocky Mountain, Desparate Journey and, Objective Burma hit the DVD list sometime soon.

Thanks for the info and correction Waynamo. I had always thought that Agnes Morehead was in that film and your probably correct at how I got her mixed up with another person. Or, I was just thinking, was she not on the old soap opera by the same name? None the less, I will look forward to seeing this fine film when it gets released. There are a few Flynn comedies I also want. I don't remember the title to this specific one but, in it Flynn is in love with some rich guys daughter. Well, they both seem to share a passion for toy electrical trains. I remember watching it late one night but do not remember much about it except that it was an entertaininng and funny movie.

Ringo, I believe the Flynn comedy you are talking about is Four's a Crowd (1938) starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Rosalind Russell, and Patric Knowles. Walter Connolly played the father who was a collector of toy trains.

And, if I ever hear anything about Edge of Darkness being released, you can be sure you'll be the first one to know!

Hi EJ, thanks for both. It was refreshing to see Flynn in a more light-hearted role. Both movies would be great additions to my Flynn collection.

So far your batting 1000 with these but one did slip through--it was the Fighting 69th w/ James Cagney. Its being released the same day as Fixed Bayonets. ;-)) Looks like 2007 is going to be a great year for the release of many classics. At this rate, I might never watch a new movie again.

Now if we could also get:

Desperate Journey, Dunkirk, Password is Courage and a few others released.

Hi EJ, thanks and, yep, Cagney is one of my all-time favorites. The movie that got me first interested in Cagney was: the Fighting 69th.

Heh heh, I have a friend whos favorite star is Humphrey Bogart and for some reason cannot stand Cagney. I guess what he does not realize is that Cagney was a bigger star before Bogie was. ;-D

Ringo, one Cagney movie in that boxed set I am really looking forward to is The West Point Story (1950) starring Cagney, Virginia Mayo and Doris Day. Kind of a silly musical, but, hey, that's O.K.
Heck, I'd probably think any movie with Ms. Mayo and Ms. Day in it was good!!!!!!!!

It's too bad that Boy Meets Girl (1938) and The Strawberry Blonde (1941) weren't included in this set, though. I sure wish those two Cagney classics were available on DVD.

Interestingly enough, Cagney himself claimed that he never watched any of his gangster movies in his retirement, only the musicals.

And you are definitely right that Cagney was a star long before Bogart. Cagney's star-making vehicle was the great gangster film The Public Enemy (1931), which made Cagney an instant star. Bogart would have to wait another decade for the back-to-back releases of High Sierra (1941) and The Maltese Falcon (1941) before coming into his own as an actor. In between, though, Bogart would appear in three films in support of Cagney, Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), The Roaring Twenties (1939), and The Oklahoma Kid (1939).
Two great gangster films and one really corny western.

Hi EJ, I completely agree with you about West Point Story. Its been probably 30 or more years since I last saw it and I remember having a crush on Virginia Mayo.

Not sure if I have seen Boy Meets Girl or not--unless that is the movie I was thinking about that had him becoming a Matinee Idol after being discovered as a movie extra?

Public Enemy is CLASSIC to the core--love that film. I have never seen high Sierra and want to. I like The Maltese Falcon but its been too many years since I last got a chance to see it that I don't remember much about it. Angels With Dirty Faces is also one of my favorite Cagney films as well as The Roaring Twenties is. I've only seen the last few minutes of The Oklahoma Kid and don't remember being impressed with it knowing how much I like Cagney.

I can't wait till I can get the Hollywood Gangsters box set. It has some fo the above titles in it as well as White Heat (which I already have as a seperate disc)

Another movie I wish they would hurry up and release is a Humphrey Bogart film called: The Black Legion. I was able to watch about 30 minutes of it when played one night last year on TCM but, they had it on so late that I fell asleep watching it (sleep not do to the film being bad -- which it was not) and the samething happened to me the first time I watched: He Walked By Night. On too late and im too tired to stay awake.

Ringo, The Public Enemy is one of my favorite Cagney films. Along with Little Caesar (1931) and Scarface (1932), those were the three films that really introduced the whole "gangster" genre.

Another good Cagney film that I wish would get released on DVD is A Lion Is in the Streets (1953), featuring Cagney as a corrupt politician. Great acting by Cagney, who also produced the film through his own short-lived production company.

One more Cagney film I really like is Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye (1950) with Cagney and Ward Bond. Cagney plays "Ralph Cotter" a criminal who escapes from a chain gang and becomes involved in a blackmail racket. It is available on DVD from DeepDiscount.com (http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewproduct.htm?productId=7255902). Blood on the Sun (1945) is another good Cagney wartime film that is widely available on DVD here in the U.S.

The Oklahoma Kid, on the other hand is not one of Mr. Cagney's better films. Cagney and Bogie did not look like westerners at all. In fact, they looked like exactly what they were, two eastern dudes from New York City. Cagney fared so poorly in it, he didn't attempt another western until Tribute to a Bad Man (1956). Strangely enough, the older Cagney looked much better in Western garb then the younger one.

Bogart would actually make another western shortly after The Oklahoma Kid, Virginia City (1940) in support of Errol Flynn and Randolph Scott. In that one Bogie was horribly miscast as a Mexican bandit, pencil-thin moustache, phoney accent and all!! Fortunately, Bogart would shortly get the lead in High Sierra after George Raft turned it down. Bogie then took off and never looked back.

I'll have to keep a watch out for Black Legion. Apparently, it's not available on DVD, but I'll watch for it on TCM. Thanks for that one, Ringo!!

Hi EJ, thanks for this and also a notification for the hopeful future release of Black Legion and quite welcome. Ill look forward to watching A Lion is in the streets as well as Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye as I have never seen either of them. I completely agree with you about Blood on the Sun, that is an excellent Cagney movie and another on my "to get" list.

I saw Virginia City sometime ago and agree, I thought Bogie was horribly miscast. I guess he needed the money? ;-D

On The Black Legion: In a way, I think that film would be perfect in this time and age. What with the border situation and all and how most people here feel about illegal aliens (thought that person in the film that Bogie cant stand was a legal immigrant) it would somehow seem so appropriate to watch it.

Ringo, I think that Virginia City was probably Bogart's worst screen performance. I have no idea what Jack Warner was thinking, casting him in that role. Errol Flynn and Randolph Scott are both quite good, however. Fortunately, Bogie would soon go on to do High Sierra, which was a starmaking vehicle for him and a huge hit at the box office. No more goofy roles for Bogie after that! Here's a couple photos of Bogie, the Mexican from Virginia City:

Hi EJ, Todd.

EJ, Bogie really does look silly in that role and that get-up. Heck, if he walked down my street dressed in that, he deserves to be stomped on. Eck, his beltbuckle is horrendous as well. And that mustache does not work on him--Flynn maybe? but not Bogie.

Arthur

This one in Off Topic Discussions, dedicated to general new DVD releases which may be of interest to our members, and another one dedicated to the release of John Wayne's films to DVD (over in General Discussions).

Thanks for giving me the motivation to find all those threads and condense them. If anybody finds other thread of a similar nature, just let me know and I can merge them in.

 Just thought i'd share a partial list of some Warner Brothers movies that have been released-some I have long sought for. These include but are not limited to:

Carbine Williams-which has James Stewart in it as the man who invented that wonderful weapon.

The Command-w/ Guy Madison. This is a Cavalry Western.

Abe Lincoln of Illinois w/ Raymond Massey. A nice period movie to say the least.

Above and Beyond w/ Robert Taylor and James Whitmore Sr. I can't remember if this is a Cold War movie or not?

Al Capone.

Billy the Kid w/ Robert Taylor as "The Kid" and Brian Donlevy.

Canyon River w/ Peter Graves and George Montgomery. Never seen this one but I like both leading actors so it will eventually come into my hands.

Captain Nemo and the Underwater City w/ Chuck Connors and Robery Ryan. OK, this is for the kids but, I still enjoy this movie as im a big Connors fan and also like Robt Ryan too.

Captain Sinbad w/ Guy Williams and Pedro Armendariez. I recall seeing this many years ago and would like seeing it again.

The D.I. w/ Jack Webb. I've never seen more than a few minutes of this movie so-its one im greatly looking forward to seeing.

Now HERE is one I have always been greatly looking forward to seeing out for sale: DARBY's RANGERS-w/ James Garner as the famed Lt.Colonel-Colonel William O. Darby. Sure was a shame he was KiA in WWII :-( This movie also has Jack Warden as Darby's Top-Sergeant and Aide.

The Defector w/ Montgomery Clift and Roddy McDowell. I have only seen a small part of this Cold War movie and would enjoy seeing it again.

Doc Savage: Man of Bronze w/ Ron Ely as the Doc himself. This is a good movie as far as Doc Savage movies go. I thought Ron Ely (of Tarzan TV series fame) did one heck of a great job of being the Doc-even for an Ami ;-))

Now here's is one I never heard about so will be among the first of these on my buy list--Operator 13 w/ Gary Cooper. This seems to be a U.S. Civil War spy type movie.

Skin Game-w/ James Garner and I think Louis Gosset Jr.? This is a Western Comedy which had Garner constantly selling is "slave" Gossett) and then after collecting the money made-they vamoose outta town and split up the money.

Task Force w/ Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan. Ive seen this one before and like it. I thought this one had already been released on DvD before? In fact im SURE it was as part of a Gary Cooper box set.

Here are some classic Lex Barker Tarzan movies:

Tarzans Savage Fury.
Tarzan and the Slave Girl.
Tarzan and the She Devil.
Tarzans Peril.
Tarzans Magic Fountain.

Three Comrades-w/ Robert taylor and Franchot Tone. Been too long since I seen this one to remember much about it but do remember liking it.

Westbound-w/ Randolph Scott. This one I think is also another Civil War Western. Im not a huge Scott fan but, I wouldn't mind having this movie.

Anyway, this is justa partial list of WB released movies. Tey all are priced at the same price of $23.88 @ Deep Discount DvD . com.

One thing that should be pointed out is that these are not "pressed" DVD's they are instead high quality DVD-R from WB home video. These are movies that they themselves would not do good if released into the market but they recognize the fanbase exists for these films and have decided to go the DVD-on-Demand route.
You can also get these from the WB archive website.

Hi Lt, by accident I stumbled onto the TCM website late last night and they offer all of these titles too. Also, all the ones offered at Deep Discount DvD are priced at $23.88 and all the same titles at TCM-go for $17.99. It certainly looks like I will be placing my orders for these through TCM-unless DDDVD starts to wise-up some and lower their prices.

Also, they have a Veteran of that Raid who is the films Adviser. It sounds like it will be a good truthful movie. However I wonder if that Black Dog will still be called: N___er?

Man, in looking at those two side-by-side, they sure resemble each other. I hadn't followed any gossip so I wasn't aware Diana had a lover. I knew she and Charlie weren't on the best of terms but that was about all I knew. It's for sure that Harry is not likely to ascend to the throne if he's not Charlie's boy.

Next Tuesday, Nov. 3rd, Disney will release both seasons of Zorro on DVD as part of their Walt Disney Treasures collection. They will be separate sets each and come in the tin cases but will be colored black instead of the usual stainless steel look. Each will be 6 discs, I believe and will have loads of extras, including a couple of hour long Zorro specials that were done away from the weekly series. The picture and sound have been remastered and from a review I read on Amazon, all episodes look and sound just fantastic. There will be an introduction by Leonard Maltin and there will also be interviews with Guy Williams Jr., the son of Guy Williams.

Thanks for the heads up on that, Ringo. Yes, they are going to be numbered. I think I read on Amazon there will be about 30,000 of each. I'm just hoping that Best Buy will carry them so, I can grab them as soon as possible. I think all the Disney Treasures sets are numbered. I have the Complete Goofy set and the tin box has the numbers on them. I bought number 2509 of 125,000. I also have the Davy Crockett set but, I don't have the tin anymore but, they made 150,000 copies.

Hi Jim, quite welcome. I subscribe to some TV alerts service that tells you if they hear anything about a TV show you check off to hear about as well as definate positive info on stuff being released or soon to be released on DvD. One I have been long awaiting on is one series I liked when it was on called: Tales of the Gold Monkey. They were in the process of interviewing cast members as part of the extra features and I don't think they had a chance to interview Jecc McKay before he passed away. Anyway, as far as I still know, this series is supposed to be released sometime in the next several months.

I didnt' know there was a special Disney Davy Crockett set? can you please let em know what it comes with? I'd love to have it.

Also, I was quite surprised that TCM can be quite cheaper on certain DvDs even quite a lot cheaper than Deep Discount Dvd. Im getting a bit tired of that place because they no longer are the leaders of selling good stuff for cheap prioces though I still find better deals there ona a few items that I don't see anywhere else. Cases in point are al;l those special releases of Warner Bros Movies like Carbine Williams, Darbys Rangers and such-DDDVD sells them for about $23.88 each and TCM is $17.99 each.

Ringo, the Davy Crockett set came out in 2001 and was one of the first of Disney Treasures sets. It's a two disc set that includes all five complete episodes of the Davy Crockett series as they were shown on tv in 1955. What's amazing about it, is they do it exactly as they showed it on tv. The opening in b&w with Walt Disney talking about Crockett and then when the feature comes on, it goes into color and when it's over, goes back to b&w, with Disney telling about the next episode. There's an introduction to the set by Leonard Maltin that goes into detail about the entire Davy Crockett craze that went on back in those days and which I was part of. Had the coonskin cap, fringed shirt and pants. Only thing I never got was the rifle. I'm pretty sure it's still available at most outlets and it's definitely worth having. There's also a nice lobby card with it from the theatrical release of the condensed Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier movie. The movie was good but, this dvd set is better because all five episodes are complete and uncut.
Also, those WB movies you mentioned, Carbine Williams and Darbys Rangers. On the WB web site, you can go into their archive section and they have all kinds of movies that are available on DVD that you can't get in stores. It's called, strangely enough, Warner Bros. Archives and they have quite a few to choose from. I like westerns and they have many, including Billy The Kid with Robert Taylor and a bunch of Randolph Scott westerns. All the DVD's have the same box design, dark blue with a small picture of a scene from the movie in the center and they go for either $19.99 or $17.99, I don't remember which. And they are not remastered but, do come from the original prints of the movie and you can also download them to your computer if that's your thing for a little less than the DVD.

I hope there is quite a few to choose from, after all, these days we "I" need more distraction from our Countries state of affairs.

Irritates me no end that WB holds all those titles in their so-called archive instead of releasing them to the general public like other film companies do. And naturally, they charge far more for the titles than other places like Amazon or Deep Discount. Except for some Westerns, there aren't a lot of titles in the archives I'd like to have but I'll be durned if I'm gonna pay almost $20. for old "B" Westerns.

The Digital Bits website has a feature called "Classic Coming Attractions" which is updated periodically and they've been listing all the titles available in WB achives for several months now (but to open the list, you have to have Word installed).

Well, looks like I may have to eat those words. I just browsed through their titles and I see they've recently added two of my favorite Westerns to their list. Both star Glenn Ford. The first is "The Fastest Gun Alive" from the Fifties and the other is "The Rounders" from the Sixties.

I don't much care for it either, but these are titles that wouldn't do good in the marketplace and just wouldn't be fiscally possible to release into the general market place.

Warner's however acknowledges the demand for these titles, and this is the best alternitive.

Ringo, when I first went to WB's archive page, they had it so you could either buy the DVD of the movie or you could download it onto you PC. I believe they have changed the terminology from download to on demand. So, I am guessing that you click on the on demand and ti will direct you to download the movie of your choice.

Also, I bought my copies of Zorro today. First I checked Sams Club to see if they had them but, they didn't. Thought if they did, they would be the cheapest. So, I got them at Best Buy for $44.99, each. Sure, I could've got them on Amazon for $6 cheaper, each but, with S&H, it would've nearly been the same and I got them right away.
With both seasons, you get a Zorro pin, Season 1 has a nice photo of guy Williams as Diego, Season 2 has one of him as Zorro. Plus, each set has a certificate of authenticity. For Season 1, I got No. 12104 of 30000, Season 2 is No. 13385 of 30000, both also come with a little booklet that tells about the series and has all the episodes listed by their air date. And Disney putting them in black tins was a great idea. They look great that way. Not flashy but, but very attractive. Haven't watched any yet but, hope to later after the hockey game is over.

Amazon.com was where I went ahead and ordered mine I paid $38.99 per season. I placed a pre-order months ago for them just to make sure I would actually be able to get them as no stores around here carry the Disney treasures line and because of that I lost my chance to get the previous entries.

Ringo, as far as I know, Desperate Journey is still not available but, if it's a WB movie, it could be very soon. They seem to be adding new titles all the time.

Ringo, keep watching because you might be able to get it, though, who knows when. I've got the VHS version and even though that was put out by MGM/UA, Desperate Journey is an original WB production. So, it's conceivable that WB could offer it sometime in the future as part of their Archive collection.

Here's (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B002XTXG48/ref=nosim/dvdpricesearch)a chance to pick up a lot of the Duke's "B" Westerns at a good price.

Stumpy i still have no idea how you people do that...

Anyway I just wanted to point out that there is a set that I really like for John Wayne B westerns it's been out for a while but still, it an awesome set that has the films arranged chronologically.

John Wayne's 100th (http://www.amazon.com/John-Wayne-100th-Anniversary-Collection/dp/B000NDFHUM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1262029779&sr=1-1)

My brother gave a Blue Ray DVD player for Christmas so, I went out and bought the new Star Trek on BR. Haven't seen the BR yet, but I did see it on regular DVD. My youngest son told me I should get Terminator: Salvation on BR because it's really good.

You should get The Searchers and Rio Bravo. Those two are on Blue Ray.

Stumpy i still have no idea how you people do that...

I presume your remark pertains to the link contained in the word "Here's" in my post immediately preceding yours.

It's pretty simple, Lt. B. In fact, Kevin used to have a tutorial somewhere on this board that explained various formatting tricks to enable a poster to do things like that but I've looked for the tutorial and can't find it so maybe he deleted it.

Anyway, it's related to (but not the same as) HTML coding but where HTML uses < and > to enclose the codes, the software system used on this and most other message boards uses [ ]. I forget exactly what the other coding system is called - I just know it's not HTML. (BTW, you don't have to include the colors; just the keyboard symbols.)

Anyway, to create a link to another website page, you just copy the URL shown in the address bar of your PC. Then, in your post on this board, you do this:

put any word(s) you want here

To post a picture, right-click the image, then copy the jpg address shown in the "properties" portion of the picture. On this board, you then post the picture by:

paste the jpg address here

There are many other coding tricks that can be used. I'll see if I can locate an easily-understood coding lesson and will post its' link for you, or maybe send you a PM.

Finally found it on this board. It's called BB coding and here's (http://www.dukewayne.com/misc.php?do=bbcode)the link that explains the various keyboard symbols and letter combinations to be used.

I don't know about blueray but on regular DvD A Time To Love and a Time To Die has been released by some company in South Korea. They are the ones that also released 55 Days At Peking. One wonders why an AMERICAN studio does not release these two excellent movies? I don't think they are public domaine??

I've been waiting for this for a long time,

Slowly but surely I'm acquiring a library of my all-time favorite movies and TV shows. Now if they'd just release the 1970 version of "Monte Walsh" and the TV series "High Chaparral", "Kojak", and "WKRP on Cincinnati", I'd have most of 'em.

I never have understood what's holding up some of these popular movies and TV series. "Kojak" was extremely popular when it was running back in the 70s but all they've ever released was Season 1 (which I have). Same with "WKRP". And look at "High Chaparral" - it was an extremely popular TV series but they've never released even a single DVD as far as I know.

WaynamoJim
January 19th, 2010, 07:22 PM
Stumpy, I believe the first season of WKRP was released just a few years ago. However, alot of people were quite disappointed because the original music they played on the show during the studio scenes was omitted because of copyright issues.
I agree with you on the Kojak and High Chaparral. But then, there are so many other series that could be released, also. I was just in my local Sams Club and they have The Guns Of Will Sonnett: The Complete Series, Season One of Wagon Train, the final season of Laramie and, Branded: The Complete Series and some non westerns, too. Arrest and Trial Season 1, Checkmate Season 1.

A Time To Love And A Time To Die? I always liked that movie. Haven't seen it in quite a few years. Don't want to date myself but, I first saw this in theaters when it first came out. The ending really left me rattled. Just wasn't expecting it. But that was before I knew the history of that time and that part of the world. When you see what the Germans did in Russia, then you know why the movie ended the way it did.

Hi Jim, tis out and you can get copies on Ebay for about $7-$12 bucks.

I first saw it strictly by accident about 19 years ago when played on WTBS. I thought it was a fantastic movie and thought how great it was to start and end-on the Eastern Front ;-)) Im getting a copy as soon as i can afford one.

I have long since wanted to see it again as I remember almost nothing about this movie except that some Allied Soldaten (I THINK Aussies??) were crossing some river in some jungle. Anyway, I thoought i'd ld let you all know that this movie is coming out to DvD.

Ive been looking forward to this series being released for a loooooooooooong time. I think GT12pak was also interested inthis TV series. It comes with extra features like cast interviews and such-minus Jeff McKay-who passed away a year or so ago. ;-(

Hi Bill, Wayneamo Jim is correct. The show was an advernture show and Stephen Collins was like a small screen Indiana Jones. Jeff McKay was sort of the shows Comedy Relief and was Collins's Mechanic. Its been too long for me to remember much else from the show but, I do remember liking it alot and it was a great show to watch.

For those interested in collecting DvDs, I saw these for sale at a local WM I was at yesterday-and with varying prices going from $5 to I think $7.50.

Anyway, I picked up:
Spartacus-$6.
I think it was Clash of the Titans? $6.
300 Spartans-$6.

Other great titles i saw were:

Bun Hur.
King of Kings.
Rooster Cogburn.
The Quiet Man.
The Flying tigers.
Sand of Iwo Jima.
Darby O'Gill and the Little People.
The Longest Day. (Der Langste Tage)
And a bunch of other great titles that I want but could not afford at the sametime.

I rarely praise WM for anything but-they scored a hoime run on this one.

Highlight for spoilers.
But there is one twist worth noting that makes this Trek movie the start of a whole new continuity. When Nimoy travels back to the past he sets of a chain of events that creates a new time stream... and changes certain events from the Classic Trek.

Mission of the Shark and The Last Grenade-have both been released.

Mission of the Shark is a movie w/ Stacy KLeach as Capt McVay and also had Richard Thomas-who was his XO I think? Anyway, this is the story abouyt the tragic torpedoing of the USS Indianapolis. Mosy of those who died-didnt dier because of the torpedoing by the Japanese Sub-but by shark attacks. For a made for TV movuie, this shows a lot of graphic material.

Like I said, Todd, the Lee Marvin version of "Monte Walsh" is a much better movie than Selleck's. I think you'll agree when you see it. There are parts of it that are funny as hell but overall, the film is kinda sad because it depicts the passing of the old West and the cowboy way of life.
