I like some of the Clint Eastwood movies - The Outlaw and Josie Wales is my favorite. I enjoy quite a variety of Roy Rogers movies as well, and his TV series. As a kid, I used to enjoy the Lone Ranger, and the Cisco Kid along with his pal Pancho. And for some beautiful horse footage, there's nothing like The Man from Snowy River.

For some reason, I've never particularly enjoyed Gary Cooper or Jimmy Stewart in cowboy movies, although I've liked them in any number of other movies.

My favourite western of all time is The Culpepper Cattle Company. Gritty, dirty, realistic and ultimately sad. In some ways it reminded me of one of my favourite Wayne westerns - The Cowboys.

Luke Askew is my favourite western actor, albeit character actor. Trying to find info on him is bloody difficult though.

i think that "the man from snowy river" is a good movie even though it's not really a western as such but for us aussies it's as good as we get, it's based on a poem by A.B. (Banjo) Patterson published in 1890, the horsemanship is great and our brumbies are just as they are seen in the movie, have a herd living not to far from where i live. they are fast brutes and can travel at speeds of 80klm/hr, my father has raced them on a motorbike to see what speeds they could get up to. the movie is hard to get so if you find a copy grab it while you can.

and chester the snowy area is just like in the movie

I really like Tombstone, I think that Val Kilmer is the best Doc Holiday ever protrayed.

I also like Silverado, I thought it was done really well.

And what is the name of the movie that Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda is about Jimmy Stewarts brother dies and leaves him a brathal (sp) ? I think that is a funny western.

7 Mules for Sister Sara

And if you would consider it a western, Dances with Wolfs.

But to be honest, if there is a western on that is either new or old I will watch it! Are t.v. if on, is usually on one of the old movie channels! And by all means, the new westerns don't hold a candle to what the old westerns were! There were just too many great actors back then, of course John Wayne being on the top of my list, but there was also Jimmy Stewart etc. I don't think you could ever replace them!

Well,Hondo you know this is not easy since there is lot of great westerns that don`t have John Wayne but I´ll give it a try anyway. So my list looks like this(at least today I`m sure I´m forgetting many good westerns)For A Few Dollars More(best one from the Eastwood-Leone westerns)
The Outlaw Josey Wales(best one from the westerns that Eastwood has directed...I know he won academy award with The Unforgiven and that movie is great also...but not as great as Josey :D )
Once Upon A Time In America(Another masterpiece from Sergio Leone .Includes one of the best villain of all time in westerns:Henry Fonda`s Frank)
The Wild Bunch(I`m not sure if you consider this film as a western but I do.Peckinpah`s best film ever)
My Darling Clementine( the best John Ford western without John Wayne)

Well,

This is pretty hard, but I guess I would pick the western movie in a non-John Wayne capicity would be:

The Magnificnet Seven.

There are many others I like but this one really pumps me up at times.

I do like My Darling Clemenine, High Noon (Duke didn't like that one), The Tin Star, The Rare Breed, just to name a few. Anyway, this is pretty hard due to the fact that Duke has the best ones in the western gerne, and no one comes close to that.

Well, I don't watch non-Duke westerns except for a few Eastwood flicks.

The only non-Duke western I like is "The Good The Bad The Ugly", although it's a low budget spaghetti western and it's a little long, but I've always liked it. ;)

Stacy, I believe the movie you mentioned with Henry Fonda and James Stewart is "Cheyenne Social Club". Directed by Gene Kelly, believe it or not.

My fave westerns are:

Tombstone-Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer

Outlaw Josey Wales-Clint Eastwood

Unforgiven-Clint Eastwood (has anyone else noticed the similarity between the kid from Unforgiven and Outlaw Josey Wales?)

Heaven's Gate-Kris Kristofferson. A flawed epic, I will admit, but strangely compelling. A look at a dark chapter of western history and another angle of the ranchers vs. the settlers battles. Makes Starrett in "Shane" look gentle.

Ride the High Country-Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott. This is a biggie. One of the very best westerns. Early Peckinpah that packs a punch. Why, oh why, is this gem not out on DVD? It was out on laserdisc and is still available on vhs. The cinematography alone begs a widescreen release for the masses. This is what gets me when it comes to the powers that be at movie studios. They will put out DVDs of dreck, direct to video tripe, yet not obvious "prestige", or classic films like this one. Whatever. I will step off the soapbox. Suffice it to say that I love this one.

That was a hard nut to crack, because there are so many great films in that genre.
I can't possibly cut it down to five - so here are my ten favorites:

1. THE FAR COUNTRY (possibly the greatest of the Anthony Mann/Jimmy Stewart collaborations)

2. SHANE

3. MY DARLING CLEMENTINE

4. FRIENDLY PERSUASION (perfect casting, perfect directing, everything's perfect - one of Coops very best)

5. BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID

6. HIGH NOON (sorry, Duke - but I still like it)

7. THE MAG SEVEN (lots of fun - and it has McQueen)

8. GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL (the chemistry of Lancaster & Douglas - and the ballad of Frankie Laine)

9. WILL PENNY (something of a change)

10. COWBOY (Delmar Dave's and Glenn Ford's best work - very authentic)

so where can I put THE PROFESSIONALS, BEND OF THE RIVER, 3:10 TO YUMA, THE WESTERNER, THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JUDGE ROY BEAN, and THE GUNFIGHTER - they belong in my 10-best-list, too! :(

In my opinion, Lonesome Dove was the best non-Duke weastern ever made. It was more true to the real west then most and darn entertaining. The Outlaw Jose Wales comes in second. Third would be The Jack Bull Story with John Cusack. It was an HBO movie and I think was very well done. Forth would be Pale Rider with Siverado coming in fifth. dukefan1

Hey,

Nobody mentioned Cat Ballou? What's wrong with that one. I mean it had Jane Fonda, she's one great american western gal.

 Just-a-Kidding.

I won't get it, and I won't see it or any Jane Fonda movie. I met with some Vietnam Vets on a weekend several years ago, and the subject came up about Jane, and one actually meeting with him as a POW. It was a very interesting conversation with the gentleman, that has enlighten me to no end about Hanoi Jane. And because I have a lot of respect for that man and others who fought in that war, I will not see anything she has on screen. That's my tribute to those men.

One of my favorite non-duke westerns is probably The Magnificent Seven. I also like some of the newer Westerns with Tom Selleck. I like that they are trying to revamp the genre. Also, it's not really a western in the classical sense, but I like Last of the Dogmen with Tom Barrenger. It has some beautiful shots in it, and a very good storyline.

The Man From Laramie is one of the best James Stewart western moive I've seen. "It has one explosive confrontation is which Stewart is dragged by a wild horse and shot in the hand at close range, is one of movie history's most memorable sequences."

3. Bandolero
4. The man from Laramie
5. The Wild Bunch (It's one of the greatest westerns I think).
6. The Professionals
7. Will Penny
8. The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
9. Winchester '73

4. Gunfight at the OK Corral

Monique,

That movie with Patrick Wayne & Robert Lansing was the 1966 release of the western, An Eye for an Eye. I haven't heard of this movie. Sounds interestring. This is what I found. Not released on DVD.

The Plot: (from an unnamed reviewer)

This is a great western about two bounty hunters one blinded and the other crippled from a man who doublecrossed them which they are seeking their revenge.Starring Robert Lansing and Slim Pickens,it's a must see movie!!

Hello All
The movie Jane Fonda did ( was it called coming home?) about the vietnam war is one of only 2 movies where I got up and left the theatre long before the show was over. I am not going to get into a discusion of the Vietnam war and the history that preceded it. On the basis that the film showed no respect for the sacrifice of their lives, made by men and women, some of whom believed they were doing the right thing, I left. It is futile to refuse and see the many aspects of any given issue and then make uninformed decisions. It seems to me that a similar topic exists elsewhere on the board ( fav non JW western) but thats just an indicator of the interest in the genre. Paint your wagon and the humor in it are hard to resist, Josie Wales and the contribution of a local BC actor Chief Dan George lamentably since deceased was a classic Milagro beanfield war had a good David vs Goliath theme Mag 7 never fails to satisfy. I have a hard time with this question because the appeal is huge. It would be easier to list westerns that I didn't like at all. Granted there were funny spots but I'm not huge on Blazing Saddles. Dances with Wolves Hidalgo and Pure Country all work for me

kilo6, I almost came through the computer screen when you said:

It would be easier to list westerns that I didn't like at all. Granted there were funny spots but I'm not huge on Blazing Saddles. Dances with Wolves Hidalgo and Pure Country all work for me

Then I reaqlized you were saying you liked the last 3. To me even though Dances was made to show how the military wrongly treated the indians, much like the mini-series on TNT this summer, it is probably one of the top 10 if not 5 westerns of all time. No discussion on Costner and who likes him or not but, it was just a plain great movie.

Hidalgo was alright, watchable is the best word I can come up with. It just never really got going for me, if that makes sense.

Pure Country, if we are talking about the same movie with George Strait, was a good date/chick flick for country music fans, but the we are talking about a acting debut for George and the rest of the characters take themselves way to seriuosly instead of having fun. I liked the movie and will watch it if it comes on TV but its not something I search out or anything.

And last but not least, Blazing Saddles. What can I say, its a period comedy when things were much different in the US and you can tell right away. The political atmoshpere was much different and I think you have to had grown up or been a grown up when the film came out to appreciate it. Plus if you are a Brooks fan, that helps too. I liked BS, ha funny, I thought Madeline Kahn's character was funny. Being over the top with the accent to goof on Marlene Dietrich was hilarious. I think if there was not so many racial jokes in the film it would maybe have worked for some people and for sure people who might not have come in contact with that type of thing.

Hello All
Hi SXViper, to be honest I haven't watched Blazing since it hit the theatres and I should probably give it another chance, I might be missing out on a something funny. Hidalgo had some scenery that i liked and i liked the horses but i always like the horses.
to me Hidalgo was sort of a western theme Indiana Jones where I just chuckle at the stunts. With Pure Country, for my family, the songs were as big or bigger then the theme. It occurs to me that I did not mention Man from Snowy river. When the brumbies ride down that steep embankment it rocked my world. I liked 13th warrior (not western but they had horses) I have worked with the gal who owns the horse Bandera rides in that show. It was filmed locally for the most part, they had the viking ship in the fraser river about 6 hundred yards from where I sit . kilo

Kilo6, funny you should mention that movie, I too enjoyed it and have it on DVD. For the most part I like Antonio Banderas and his films. He has had a couple stinkers, but they all have. And even though it was not a western I liked those type of movies as well.

Oh and as Stumpy said in the last post, have you saw Open Range? It is a good western and one to own if you ask me.

mary,

Not that IMDb is the absolute source, but it is fairly good, and the only joint venture they show with both Johnny Cash and John Wayne is a TV variety show special from 1970 called Swing Out, Sweet Land. Aside from the one user comment, there is no other detail, but from what I can discern from that one commentary, the two Johns did not even appear together.

Hopefully, someone else around here might be able to get you closer to your answer.

Hi Mary sorry but I don't recall seeing that movie and if Chester does not find it , then chances are it may not exist as his JW knowledge seems pretty extensive. perhaps it was Mr Cash and another actor? Hi Stumpy & SXViper, I have not seen Open Range but plan to remedy that shortly mabe even by buying it. I may not have feedback on open range for a bit. Kilo
