Because it would take too much time and energy to put these in any particular order (which could change from day to day anyway), I haven't.

Here are my favorites -

Sean Thornton in "The Quiet Man"

Davy Crockett in "The Alamo"

Sgt. Stryker in "The Sands of Iwo Jima"

Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit" and "Rooster Cogburn and the Lady"

John Bernard Books in "The Shootist"

John Elder in "The Sons of Katie Elder"

Col. Mike Kirby in "The Green Berets"

Temujin in "The Conqueror" (JUST KIDDING!!! :D )

So Hondo, what are your favorites?

i wouldn't be able to choose as i think they were mostly all great but i did perfer his navy/army characters, this could be because i was a service brat and could understand his sense of duty.

You know :o answering this question after I asked you to put your favorites, seems to be a disadvantage. :( You guys picked out the ones I really find him in that I really enjoy. But to add to this fun, I would pick:

 In additon to Sean Thornton, J.B. (John Benard) Books, Rooster Cogburn, & Sgt. John M. Stryker

Quint Evans in Angel & the Badman

Ringo Kid in Stagecoach

G.W. (George Wahsington) McLintock in McLintock! ;)

John T. Chance in Rio Bravo :) {surprise nobody mentioned this character}

Roy Glennister in The Spoilers

Charles Markham in Pittsburg :D

Taw Jackson in The War Wagon

Tom Doniphon in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Captain Ralls in Wake of the Red Witch <_<

Jake Cutter in The Comancheros B)

This took a little time to work up, but I knew it would be worth it. By the way, do you know Duke's character name in the movie, "Cancel My Reservation," and he reprised the same character name in "I Married A Woman." :D

Hondo,

I agree with Sean Thornton in the Quiet Man, he was so good in that!

And I also like his character in Rio Bravo, John T Chance! I am also very surprised that no one mentiion that one. It is on my top 10 least for the movies I like best!

I also liked his character in Rio Lobo but I can't thing of the name he used in it. I guess I need to watch it again!

In both, Rio Lobo and Rio Bravo, he was very good and a bit on the funny side! I think he must of had a really good since of humor, don't you think?

Stacy,

He had a great sense of humour. Did you know that he wore a pink bunny rabbit suit on Laugh-In? He loved it, and really could laugh at himself, and others with class.

Your answer to Rio Lobo character was Cord McNally

P.S. Does anyone know Duke's character name in the movie, "Cancel My Reservation," and the same name he used to reprised the same character name in "I Married A Woman?"

Hondo,

In answer to your question, the only thing I could find from IMdB, one of my favorite resources, was that in both of those movies John Wayne played "Himself", and in I Married A Woman, it also listed the character name Leonard (as in Himself/Leonard).

Chester,

You're quiet right. He only made cameo apperances in very short times. I haven't seen him in any of the movies. He wasn't really a part of the movie, so I didn't get them. I think I could have gotton "Cancel My Reservations," on VHS, but not "I Married a Woman." Both are comedies.

Here are my favorites:

Quirt Evans - Angel and the Bad Man (I'm named after this one)
Wil Anderson - The Cowboys (Can't believe this one wasn't mentioned)
JB Books - The Shootist
Rooster Cogburn - True Grit and Rooster Cogburn
Ethan Edwards - The Searchers

This is a good topic!

Thanks Kwirt, That's great.

If I had to pick out just one of my favorite character out of all in Duke's movie career, and I mean just one, I would pick John T. Chance in Rio Bravo. That is really hard to pick only one that stands out to you. I have picked many, but when you can only pick one, that's a different story.

My challenge to you all (YALL {from the south}) on the board is to pick just ONE that stands out to you as the all time Duke character in your opinion.

That will be a challenge. Happy Trails.

I think that the answers to this question is a good example to quash any myth that might exist saying that John always played the same character.

My favourite character has to be Ethan Edwards

I enjoy so many of the characters he played, including the ones that have already been mentioned.

The Cowboys and North to Alaska were two of the first John Wayne movies I can remember seeing, and they are still among my favorites. So with that said, Wil Anderson and Sam McCord are two of my favorite characters.

Hondo,
Sorry it has taken me so long to respond to your post. Thank you for giving me the character name that John Wayne used in Rio Lobo! For the life of me I couldn't remember, and beings that is a movie that is on my top 10 list I am embarrassed for not remembering! But I have recently pulled it out of collection and watched it again! Speaking of my collection, I counted my Duke movies and I am up to 37! I am hopeing that one day I have most if not all of them! How many of his movies do you have in yours?

Anyway thanks for the information! And that is really funny about the bunny suit! I would love to see that, it is hard for me to imagine big Duke in a bunny outfit! :P

Anyway, thanks again!

In Trouble Along the Way, Duke character's name was Steve Williams, and played a down and out college football coach, who had a daughter. He was separated from his wife or divorce, and she abandoned her daughter. Now she wants her back a few years later, but Duke isn't giving her up that easy.

Dan Roman played the part of the co-pilot in The High & The Mighty. His captain was played by Robert Stack; they became good friends while shooting this movie. It's a shame that they didn't do any other movies since.

Hi -

I'm resurrecting this topic because I'm sure there have been a lot of new members that have come to this board since this one was active (it was way back on page 30).
If I had to pick just one character, at this time it would have to be a toss-up between Ethan Edwards in "The Searchers" and Sean Thornton in "The Quiet Man." If I came back a week from now, though, one of the Duke's other portrayals might head the list.
And, this topic started out as a list of favorite roles, so others might want to make a list that didn't before. I subscribe to just about all the others listed here.

Cheers - Jay :D

Flip a 3 sided coin :stunned: because I have 3 favorites. John T. Chance, Ethan Edwards, and Sam McCord. Depends on the day or feeling. There are others that are close, but those 3 head my list.

Because I am a Duke fan all the way I liked all of his Characters even the one that he played in The Searchers but that Part was a little to DARK for me but Great Acting. The way I remember the Duke was just like he was in "The Shootist" even is he was a lot Thinner in the late 1970s when I last saw him. But J.B. Books was Duke all the way and just the way he was off screen :cowboy: Chilibill

Chilibill -

J.B. Books moves to the top as I think about it. It just depends on the time and mood to shift around the order of favorite Duke roles.

Col. John Marlowe - The Horse Soldiers

Blood-and-guts tough, yet not without feelings (like when his troops are mowing down the confederates, or he's comforting the young union soldier's last minutes).

I answered in the "Favorite Western/Non-Western" character threads, but I agree, this topic needs to pop up every few months or so.

Favorite Duke character? Heck, I like them all, guys!!!! But if I had to choose one, right now it would be "Guns" Donovan, as I'm really swept up in a Donovan's Reef mood these days. However, I like all the ones I listed for many reasons, and in the cases of J.H. Thomas & G.W. McClintock, for the "rugged individual"-type statements they make during their respective films.

Cole Thornton- EL DORADO
Ethan Edwards- THE SEARCHERS
Rockwell Torrey- IN HARM'S WAY
Mike "Guns" Donovan- DONOVAN'S REEF
G.W. McClintock- MCCLINTOCK!
Col. John Henry Thomas- THE UNDEFEATED

Mrs.McLintock,

First of all I want to welcome you here to the greatest message board in the world that talks about a great American, John Wayne!

Out of the five, which one do you like the best? These characters are in a way different from each other, and it would interesting who you like the best and why.

I would have to say Jacob McCandles. I love the way he just enters back into the family, the not so white knight. I think his character has just the right mix of good guy and bad guy, the kind of bad that you need sometimes.

"I got hooked on these when I was a yonker, never could get my fill of them" One of my favorite scenes.

I've had that darn song stuck in my head all day! I even like the William Conrad spoken word bit!!!

Duke has some fine moments in Chisum, but Geoffrey Deuel (Billy the Kid) isn't the talented actor his brother, Pete ("Alias Smith & Jones") was, IMO.

I should also mention that the theme to "The War Wagon" is the catchiest theme song ever in a Duke movie! ("Look at those horses, what are they draggin?")
