Two Duke releases are out today on DVD. Big Jake and Rio Lobo , on May 13, Operation Pacific, and June 3, Cahill: U.S. Marshall, The Comancheros, Chism, North to Alaska, and The Undefeated will be released on DVD.

I have Big Jake & Rio Lobo on DVD now in my collection. Both of the special features are limited to Widescreen Version, with English subtitles, dolby ditital in english 5.1 surround, english stereo surround, and french mono. This is in Region 1 (US & Canada). There are no trailers, deleted scenes, commentaries or documentaries. Great movies though!

Duke would be proud!

B) Greetings smokey!

I checked on the web, and as far as I can find, none are to be released in Region 4 yet. This is why I really hate the region codes.
I have found though a website that sells DVDs and they have The Three Godfathers on DVD. They say it was made for the Brazilian market (it's not a bootlege) and it's a region 0. They have put some DVDs up for bid at eBay.
It should play on your DVD player if your interested and it is in it's original english language. Check it out for yourself @ Submarino (http://www.submarino.com.br/dvds_productdetails.asp?Query=ProductPage&ProdTypeId=6&ProdId=180678&ST=SE). I thought about purchasing it on eBay after checking out the site myself. Anyway, good luck!

Greetings to you Smokey,

Baron is right that nothing has been announced at this time in your region. I must say that regions are the pits, and I don't understand why we have them. I gave my mother last Christmas a DVD, and it was zoned in South America. Anyway, it wouldn't play, and I traded it in for the right zone.

Can anyone tell me, why we have regions throughout the world and cannot play it in our region? Releases should not have anything to do with it. We should all get the same releases.

Smokey, I thought a few years ago, that Rio Lobo was released in your rigion. I know that Rio Barvo was before we got it. Maybe I could have gotton that mixed up.

Cheers, Hondo :)

P.S. Smokey, sorry that you can't get these releases. I think that stinks!

smokey,

I wonder how feasible it would be for you to get an American DVD or VHS player and adapt your 230 volts to 120 volts AC. Then you could order online from Amazon.com or Movies Unlimited or buy from Ebay. This way you could get the latest releases when they are released, instead of having to wait for years and/or get a larger variety of movies for a lesser price.

Right now the prices on VHS players are in the $60-$80 bracket, and DVD players are around $100-$150 (U.S.). I don't know what the shipping would be on something like that.

Would you have to buy an American TV for the VCR or DVD player to work with it  ?

I don't know . . . but someone out there does . . .

hi to all,

yes have seen a couple of jw's in dvd here but when i went back to buy they were sold out :( much to my bad luck. we work on 240 volts here so the chance of changing the voltage would be expensive sorry, we have some dvd players for as little as $199 A but this dosen't include the surround sound, video players are still in the high range like $150 A, but already have one of those beasties :D .

thanks for the heads up will wait for them to come down under or i could go to Malayisa and get a copy for $5 A -$10 A made on the spot as they don't inforce the copy right laws there :D only joking.

Great Smokey,

What a great expense! I wish we could send you copies from the states. They are a lot cheaper, and I know after shipping, it would still be a better price, but then there are the blasted regions that keep you from seeing much of Duke's films on DVD that we have here.

Stay true to the Duke,
and Cheers!

An update of sorts. If I may nitpick, the DVD of "The Big Trail" is presented is full frame format, not widescreen. Why not? This was the first widescreen movie, filmed in 70mm as an experiment. I would think that it would warrant a widescreen presentation as a historic record, if nothing else. The studio could always re-release the DVD later as a special edition, but I say do it right the first time. Besides, there is something special about a big epic shot in black and white. (like "In Harm's Way")

According to one source, "The Big Trail" was filmed in 35 mm and in 65 mm "Fox Grandeur" wide-screen process. I haven't seen the new DVD version yet, but if what you say is true, I think they made the DVD version off of the 35 mm. I agree with you that widescreen is much better. I prefer it to any other formats exept cinemascope. But then until I can figure out how to make a cinemascope theater tv, I'll have to make do.

Just looking at some information, I don't know why, but if you leave a message to Fox Video (The Studio Distributor), they might be able to give you more info. Baron's right, that they have in 35 mm, and the information I have listed is 70 mm from IMDb.

Not sure why they released it in 1.33:1 full screen. I would rather have it on widescreen version. Didn't know that it was released on May 20th. Thanks for the info.

I don't know anything about it, except that it was not received in good reviews. This movie didn't get Duke off the ground. Is it worth it to have in my collection? Need more info.

Hondo!

I have "The Big Trail" on VHS that I recorded off of MoviePlex. If you have ever watched it, the scenes are beautiful and can only be done justice in widescreen. Fox could have made one side of the DVD 35 mm, and the other the widescreen. That way we could have a choice of how we wanted to watch the movie. Who knows what goes through the mind on the company that put these DVDs out.

Here is some info about the movie;

"The Big Trail was a box-office disappointment, a fact which some have attributed its expensive production methods. Each scene was lensed twice, once in 35-millimeter and then in the 65-mm "Fox Grandeur" wide-screen process. And then, each dialogue scene was filmed in French and German, with totally different casts. Even if Big Trail has been a big hit, it would have lost money thanks to the time-consuming shooting and reshooting of virtually every scene. Whatever the case, it was John Wayne who suffered most from the film's failure; instantly demoted to "B"-westerns, it took him nearly a decade to rebuild his stardom. Long believed lost, The Big Trail was made available for exhibition again in the early 1970s -- and in the 1990s the original widescreen version was at last restored for public view. "

Also take in the fact when the movie was released, it was after the stock market had crashed and everyone was losing their jobs! The movie goers couldn't spare the money for the theaters. It seems to me "The Big Trail" was doomed no matter what. Now they are releasing it on DVD in full screen instead of widescreen. Will this movie ever get a break?? :(

Great points, Baron. I do remember that on Biography (A&E), The Big Trail was a disappointment due to the time period, and economy. Maybe Fox has a grudge with this movie after all the years.

I'll try to see it soon. I just had a birthday, and was given some money to increase my John Wayne collection. Never know, I might have that Big Trail before you know it.

Hi Hondo,

A few years ago, (3 or 4), I bought The Big Trail for my dad. I just found it in a tub full of $4 movies at a local video store. This may not impress you, but you might find it somewhere you hadn't thought to look before.
Anyway, good luck.

Northerner.

Hey Northerner,

Glad to have you on the board. You have made good comments on other posts, and I really enjoyed reading your thoughts, and insights.
:D

Thanks for the info on The Big Trail. I am a collector of DVD's, and stopped buying VHS's since 1997, when I bought my DVD player. My collection of Duke consists of getting all of his hits from Stagecoach to The Shootist. I know that The Big Trail is pre-Stagecoach, and is an "A" movie, but this is my system I adopted since seriously collecting Duke back in 1992. I hope someday to start collecting his "B" movies including The Big Trail, but I might go ahead and get that one soon. I don't have all the movies yet.

Thanks for the info Northerner, and your input on so many of the posts. They are quite interesting.

And Welcome to the Board

I was at a video national chain store the other day, and we were talking about one of my favorite subjects, John Wayne! We talked about the movies that has come out on DVD, and he told me there is a strong rumor that the Batjac Productions release of McLintock! will be coming out sometime very soon. That is the original format, not the Goodtimes print. What that means is we are about to get a much better release of a western comedy classic.

Also, it was mentioned that Hondo is coming out as well. Not sure if they will be a box set, but the word is a production company won out on others and will shortly put out these movies on DVD, and a strong possiblilty of The High And The Mighty, and Island in the Sky late this year or early next.

This has not been confirmed as of yet, and no official word from John Wayne Enterprises at this time, but keep your eyes, ears, and monitors open, and lets see what happens. This will be great news if it happens.

Been a long time waiting.

Staying in touch.

Hondo B)

P.S. Word that Wal-Mart is pulling out all John Wayne videos and other classic movies due to low sales. Looking into that. Maybe need to react to Wally World.

I hope I found the right people who know, I currently have approx. 120 John Wayne Movies on tape, but the number of movies he was actually in seems to change every time I do a little more research.

My question is just how many movies are out there on video tape, I noticed thay are now being put on DVD, which I will need to start.

I found 162 movies but this website adds 3 more to that.

Hey there Doug,

Welcome to the John Wayne Board. This is the best place for a lot of his loyal fans to get together and share stories, trivia, and questions, that I could find on the internet.

You propose a great question. How many films has Duke done? According to the Complete Films of John Wayne by Mark Ricci, Boris Zmijewsky, and Steve Smijewsky, they list Duke doing 152 films.

Here is the conflict, he made a bunch of films that he only makes a brief appreance (especially in the early days) and is not credited. Some times people credited him on TV, but he made many appreances on the television. The newest one is he is listed as credited in the movie, when his movie was showing on the movie after he died. I don't count that, but there are some who do, so here are some of the conflicts. So Doug, there is your answer.

As for the listing of how many movies out on VHS, and DVD, I have that answer for you. Currently as of today June 16, 2003. Duke has 122 VHS moives out; some maybe hard to find, but that is the official count. He has 78 DVD's out officially right now. Do realize that some on VHS may have been released, but is not currently. For example Alleghany Uprising is not listed as a release on VHS, but it was at one time, because I have it on VHS. Again, I am listing from the movies, not television appreances. like I Love Lucy, Red Skelton, etc.

Keep on posting.

Where would one find a list of all the movies that are now out on DVD, perhaps with a description of their format (Widescreen or Full-Screen)?

I'm really hoping for McLintock soon, as it's one of my favorite JW movies.

MMA10mm,

Welcome to the board, and what is the best of all Duke talk places, and threads. The best place to see the films out from John Wayne is http://imdb.com/. You can also go to the section of John Wayne at this site at: http://amazon.imdb.com/Name?Wayne,%20John

There is nothing with only a list of Duke and the formats without looking at each individual movie.

I'll keep looking around and see what I can find.

MMA10mm,

While browsing the John Wayne Webring this evening, I came upon a web site, which had a list of all JW's movies, and listed whether they were available on DVD or VHS (or both). Here's the link:

http://www.angelfire.com/zine/timetraveler.../johnwayne.html (http://www.angelfire.com/zine/timetraveler/johnwayne.html)

For some of the oldsters on the board here, check out the site and see if you notice anything else of special interest ;) .
