View Full Version : Elvis Presley
SXViper January 3rd, 2005, 11:03 PM Hi all,
Thought I would remind people that this week is Elvis's 70th Birthday celebration. With his actual birthday being on the 8th of January.
Along with my dad influencing me with the Duke, he is also a huge Elvis fan, both of music and his movies. Now I don't want to get into a debate about how good is movies are, but I enjoy them, even if they were a "cheesy". So I enjoy a good Elvis flick whenenver I can see them.
Both TCM and AMC will being showing some of his movies on Saturday, you can check the times on there sites.
My favorite elvis movies in order are:
1. Charro! - No songs, just a western with some good acting
2. Viva Las Vegas - Ann Margaret- WOW!!
3. G.I. Blues - Juliet Prowse's legs!!!!
4. Jailhouse Rock - Surprisingly good movie and songs
5. King Creole - Same as Jailhouse Rock
6. Girl Happy -Shelly Fabares- WOW!!!
7. Flaming Star - It was a western and Barbara Eden - WOW!
8. Kid Galahad - Charles Bronson
9. Loving You - great songs
10. Wild In the Country - Tueday Weld past on True Grit and Bonnie & Clyde!!
Anyways just thought I would throw this out there since I was thinking about it.
Stumpy January 4th, 2005, 07:05 AM IMO, his movies stunk but I sure did like his singing. I have a fairly complete collection of all his music. And last weekend I watched a broadcast of his '72 tour. He was one hell of a showman, that's for sure, and will probably have a lasting influence on music in America.
William T Brooks January 4th, 2005, 09:43 AM Stumpy ; I agree with you on his Films, but I was in my 20s in his Hay Days and did did like some of his Music and He did allot of good for things for the Service Men in the early 1950s! Bill
SXViper January 4th, 2005, 01:40 PM Guys, like I said, I know his movies were not great and I didn't want to discuss them. Just wanted to remind people about his 70th birthday(if still alive).
Robbie January 13th, 2005, 05:16 PM I like the old Elvis song myself such as Jailhouse rock, the ghetto and Suspicious minds.
His movies should be viewed as great music videos they were an excellent way way for him to market himself and his music.
Over here in the UK Jailhouse rock was re-released last week and it went to number one making it the UK's 999th number one and confirming Elvis as the king of music. If there is one thing about the man that I really hate it is those OTT fans whom dress up as he did and claim he is still alive etc etc they really do the man no favours.
Someone asked me once if he and the duke ever met or talked about each other, I was unable to provide him with an answer can someone help.

About '93 or '94 the wife and I were traveling to Louisville (Kentucky) to visit one of her nieces. We went through Memphis so naturally we had to see Graceland.
We were standing on the sidewalk outside Graceland looking through the fence at the mansion when suddenly we heard a screech of brakes on the street behind us. We turned around to look just as a van pulled up to the curb, the side door opened and out jumped an Elvis impersonator. She (it was a woman, part of a group who were apparently touring the country) was dressed in an outfit that looked like one of those fancy rigs Elvis wore, was carrying a guitar, had the long black sideburns, and I swear bore more than a passing resemblance to the King himself. After the wife and I got over our shock at seeing this reincarnation, we posed for photographs with "Elvis" in front of Graceland. Really got a big kick out of it.
chester7777 January 13th, 2005, 10:34 PM Stumpy,
Do you know if this impersonater was using a Silver Dollar to impersonate Elvis's walk?

That went over my head, Chet. Sorry.
arthurarnell January 14th, 2005, 03:40 AM Hi
Like you when Elvis became famous I was about ten. In his first film Love Me Tender , the critics said the film was alright and Elvis's acting was passable its just that he couldn't keep his legs still even after they shot him.
Of my favourite Elvis pictures
G.I.Blues
Viva Los Vegas
King Creole
and all of his early ones. After that they all seemed to fade into a sameness that if you'd seen one you'd seen them all.
But his music was magic.
Regards
Arthur
Cole Thornton January 14th, 2005, 03:15 PM I used to despise Elvis movies! I've since grown to appreciate their charm and the styles and color. They are comfort movies that exist in a weird kind of "Elvisverse" that was miles away from the concerns of the 1960s. I also prefer the cheesy songs of those films over his played-to-death hits. I especially enjoy:
FUN IN ACAPULCO
CLAMBAKE
BLUE HAWAII
GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS!
PARADISE, HAWAIIAN STYLE
SPINOUT
ROUSTABOUT

When we were at Hearst Wyntoon in the late 1970s William R. Hearst jr. ask Duke Why he walked the way he did in his films, and was it because he had bad legs from his Football Days? The Duke told him No, all you have to do is put a "Silver Dollar" between your Cheeks and hold it there when you Try to walk and everyone had a big laugh! biggrin.gif
Make sense now? ;)

kilo 6 July 8th, 2006, 07:52 PM Hello all
I liked Elvis for his music and spirit and thought his movies were ok. The only one I purchased was Viva Las vegas. B)
SXViper July 9th, 2006, 06:09 PM Thanks for bringing this back up. If anybody is interested, Sirius satellite radio has a all Elvis channel that plays Elvis and nothing else. Plus if you get Dish Network Satellite service you can listen to the Elvis station as well through the dish on your tv or stereo system. My wife got me Sirius Satellite radio for Fathers Day and I love it. Listening to Elvis all the time can get old but there are so many other stations to choose from.
The Ringo Kid July 10th, 2006, 02:27 PM I'm not a big fan of Elvis's movies with the exception of: [B] "Love Me Tender." However, I do like most of his music.
Did you know that the song: "Love Me Tender" actually dates back to the Civil War.
