View Full Version : Duke's Favorite Duke Movies
Hondo Duke Lane May 9th, 2003, 10:29 PM I've found something interesting that I'd like for everyone try to answer. This will be kinda tough, so be patient and keep on trying to guess. What are John Wayne's Favorite Movies he made?
Clue #1: There are eight (8) films on the list.
Clue #2: Five (5) of them are Westerns.
Clue #3: They are from the "A" Movie List.
Clue #4: Two (2) were directed by John Ford.
Clue #5: He was in the lead role.
Be patient, and I'll respond to you soon, and tell you who's right. We'll keep on guessing until all are guessed. This might take a little time.
Take Care and Cheers,

dukefan1 May 10th, 2003, 06:10 AM Good question, Hondo. I'll take a crack at a few...
The Searchers, Red River, True Grit, The Quiet Man, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, Sands of Iwo Jima, The Alamo (of course), The Green Berets and The Shootist. Lets see how many I got right. dukefan1
Robbie May 12th, 2003, 09:46 AM John Wayne stated in a Playboy article that his favourite movies were
1. The High abd the Mighty
2. Red River
3. The Quiet Man
4. The Searchers (This was Dukes undisputed favourite movie)
5. Rio Bravo
6. The Shootist
7. True Grit
8. Green Berets
I still dont agree that John Wayne would only have picked two John Ford Movies.

Hondo Duke Lane May 12th, 2003, 05:15 PM Robbie,
This answer is based on an interview on December, 1977. I think it was photoplay magazine. Can't confirm that but it was apparent that would have included all his movies. He did say so far his favorites, thinking he would be making more. He was working on another project (Ron Howard and he were discussing something) but it never materialize because of his failing health. The playboy article took place in 1971, which wouldn't have included all his movies, since he was still making them.
Hopefully, I cleared up the timeline, which included all his films. I haven't read the playboy interview completely, but saw him list best movies in his opinion that he thought was better than True Grit.
My topic is the basis of the December 1977 interview trival question.
Thanks for the clearification, Robbie.

Hondo Duke Lane May 14th, 2003, 11:50 PM Sorry Robbie,
Not correct.
If you look at the clues above, you'll see that there were (2) two movies directed by John Ford, so far you only named just (1) one.
I asked for (5) westerns, so far only (4) four are listed.
One of his movie was on location in a foreign land.
Keep on pluggin' on.

How about Stagecoach and Hatari? Stagecoach is a western directed by John Ford, and Hatari takes place in a foreign land.

That's the final two answers. Great job! Thanks to all that particiapted in this. I rather enjoyed this. I didn't think anyone would get Hatari. But I remember Duke talking about how much he enjoyed doing this and being a part of the environment. He really loved the place and visited a couple of more times in his life. He love big game hunting, and sight seeing.
Thanks again.
The answers are:
1. Stagecoach
2. Red River
3. She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
4. Sands of Iwo Jimo
5. The Alamo (of course)
6. Hatari
7. True Grit
8. The Shootist
Happy Hunting Hondo :D

kilo 6 June 1st, 2008, 02:31 AM I Would Like To Read That Interview As Well Besides That Its An Interesting Thread. I Would Have Had Green Berets On My List As He Seemed To Feel Quite Strongly About It
DukePilgrim June 1st, 2008, 03:18 AM Any ideas what Duke's favourite movies were outside his own.
gt12pak June 1st, 2008, 10:16 PM You'd think that Angel and the Badman would be on this list.
chester7777 June 2nd, 2008, 09:39 AM Hi Hondo what is web address for that interview which Duke gave as I would be interested in reading it.
I don't know if the interview was available online in 2003, but a Google search this morning didn't pull up anything. According to Wikipedia, the magazine ceased publication in 1980. Old copies of the magazine may be available such places as ebay (I didn't search there, but have bought other old magazines there).
It would be an interesting article, to be sure.

H.sanada June 3rd, 2008, 07:02 AM Hello all,
At the press interview held when John Wayne comes to Japan the second in 1974,
Duke has enumerated that as his most likable films of John Ford, She Wore A
Yellow Ribbon,The Quiet Man and The Searchers.
And also Duke said he had the print(film) of "Stagecoach,Red River,
Hatari! and The Long Voyage Home"for his home theater.
i t is uncertain that film size is 16mm or 35mm.
Hondo Duke Lane June 7th, 2008, 11:34 PM I remember doing this back when I did. But I am sorry that I didn't answer Robbie's request. I will try to look this up and give you an answer. It has been awhile, and I just don't remember where I got this from. I hope I find it.
Cheers  Hondo
