View Full Version : The Hills In The Beginning Of The Shootist
Bonnie March 9th, 2005, 05:38 PM My friend's dad has friends that own some area of the hills that you can see in the beginning of The Shootist.
Has anyone here been to a location that a JW movie was shot? I don't think I have. -_-
Hondo Duke Lane March 9th, 2005, 07:24 PM Bonnie,
I want to take a moment to welcome you to this great message board. Glad to have you here.
I have been on location that The Green Berets was shot for the majority of the movie. About 17 years ago while living in the area, I was given an imprompt tour of where the movie was shot. It was not much because it has been 20 years at the time movie was done but just the fact that it was a Duke movie was enough. Incidently, some of We Were Soldiers movie with Mel Gibson was shot at Fort Benning, Georgia. Pretty cool because Duke didn't shoot many movies east of the Mississippi River.
Cheers B)
The Ringo Kid March 10th, 2005, 02:06 PM :cowboy: The only place I ever visited that a John Wayne movie was filmed at was in Bracketville, TX where they filmed The Alamo (or some of it) I was there maybe 30 or so years ago.
Hondo Duke Lane March 10th, 2005, 05:34 PM Good Grief Ringo,
I've been to Bracketville, Tx myself. I forgot about that. It's been a while, but I should have remembered that.
Cheers B)
chester7777 March 10th, 2005, 11:07 PM Bonnie,
Where is it that the hills are in the scenery in The Shootist? Is it by Carson City in Nevada?
As to locations where I have been, I have been to the Rogue River area of Oregon, where Rooster Cogburn was made, and the ranch where he stayed while doing the Great Western commercials.
Chester :newyear:
itdo March 11th, 2005, 04:01 AM I've travelled there to see those mountains and the respective location (they planned a lot more shots of Books riding down the mountain into the valley, very Shane-like, but cancelled that due to Wayne's health).
I hoped to recognize more of the buildings that were seen in the movie, unfortunately, besides the mountains, nothing looked familiar (of course, most of the street shots were done at Burbank, Warner Bros.)
The Ringo Kid March 11th, 2005, 03:34 PM :cowboy: Hi Hondo :D that's one thing i'm good at is reminding people of things. :)
itdo March 12th, 2005, 03:38 AM Hey Bonnie, did your Dad's friends own the place when the filming took place? And did the get close enough to provide us with some insight?
I think it's great to actually own a "piece of filmhistory". I once met the farmer who owns the land where they shot the famous bike-jump from "The Great Escape" in Germany (for you Escape-fans out there: the place still looks absolutely the same, including the farm-house in the background). The film company even left the farmer the fake barbed wire they used.
Bonnie March 13th, 2005, 09:48 PM Chester- I forgot where he said the land is, but I'll ask him as soon as I get the chance to, and let you know where it is.
Itdo- I'll ask about that also.
Mrs.McLintock March 14th, 2005, 05:54 AM Watched True Grit last night; has to be the greatest scenery ever in a movie. Who knows where it was filmed?
chester7777 March 15th, 2005, 02:56 PM Mrs. McLintock,
IMDb is a great resource for much information - click here (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065126/locations) for the locations used in the filming of True Grit.

Mrs.McLintock March 15th, 2005, 03:49 PM Great, thanks!
Bonnie April 1st, 2005, 11:24 AM The hills are in Genoa Nevada.
deduke@sbcglobal.net April 3rd, 2005, 04:28 PM been to the western town of buckskin joes where the cowboys was film. it is located about 7 miles outside of canon city colorado. there is a motel where the duke stayed while filimg the movie. they offer the room to rent to all jw buffs. i was out there in 2003 and 2004 but the room was already reserved.
Colorado Bob April 5th, 2005, 05:31 PM Howdy All!
I've been to Buckskin Joe's where portions of The Cowboys was shot. You can actually go into the store and some of the other buildings that were used in the film. The town has been used for several films, including The Sacketts, and the television show based in Duke's film True Grit with Warren Oates as Rooster. I've also been to the area around Gunnison, Colorado where portions of true Grit was filmed. Beautiful country around there, including the Black Canyon. If any of you ever get up to that part of Colorado, you have got to go see it. It'll take your breath away.

chester7777 April 9th, 2005, 01:02 AM Hey, Chilibill, how 'bout setting up a tour of Monument Valley for all us kooks! Maybe that would be a fun way to celebrate the Duke's birthday, and get to meet everyone face to face in 2006 or 2007 (it seems a little late to plan it for this year). We're still holding out hope to travel to Ireland in '07.

William T Brooks April 9th, 2005, 08:46 AM Chester;
Great idea,I would like to meet some of you Duke Cowboys :cowboy: and Cowgirls :cowboy: face to face myself. Even if Monument Valley is way out in the middle of the Wide Open Spaces, there are two places to stay. Gouldings lodge and Trading Post has many Rooms and is right in Monument Valley. This is where Duke, Ford and the rest of the Film Crew would stay when they were making a Film at Monument Valley and even some of the Great Film "Fort Apache" was shot at the Old Gouldings Trading Post, and just about 25 miles south is the small Navajo town of Kayenta and they have a Nice Motel there and I think it is a Best Western, and my Wife and I stayed there many times. They also have a very nice Camp Ground at Gouldings Lodge with Full Hookups. :stunned:
And yes the Navajo Tribe does have Tours of Monument Valley in open Buses. :agent: One half Day tours, and One Full Day Tours for a little more money.
If we can get the Duke's people to Monument Valley, I can make the arrangements with the Navajo Tribe. For those of you that have never been there you will Love It, you will almost think Duke and Ford are there!!!
JWAngel and IHW; If you want to find more Info. on Monument Valley and Gouldings Trading Post you can go to GOULDINGS TRADING POST (http://www.gouldings.com)

Emmanuel April 17th, 2005, 12:10 PM Hi Bonnie.
Living in in Ireland I've been To Cong, County Mayo. Which is where Duke made The Quiet Man A few times. The place has not changed much in over 50 years.
Emmanuel. :)
Emmanuel April 17th, 2005, 12:17 PM Chilibill, IHW, Chester.
Likewise, I would love to see Monument Valley, and would love to meet John Wayne fans. 2007 would do for me if others were interested.
Emmanuel April 17th, 2005, 12:38 PM Chilibill
Thanks for the Gouldings Lodge page.
Hondo Duke Lane April 17th, 2005, 01:08 PM Something to think about for 2007. I'd love to come and be a part of the celebration. I'll have to get it together with business so I can afford this before May 2007.
Cheers B)
Robbie April 17th, 2005, 06:07 PM Is anyone planning to go to Galway in 2007 for Dukes birthday celebrations as thats where I'm likely going to be.
:agent:
William T Brooks April 19th, 2005, 07:40 AM Any of you Duke Fans that think you might want to go to Monument Valley in The Year 2006 or 2007, :jump: I have put up some more pictures and Info. on the Web-Site below. It will show you people that have never been there some Idea what you are in for. But like every thing else the pictures do not do show you all the things that you would see if you are really there. :fear: I will put them up on the "Duke Stories" also!
You can go to MONUMENT VALLEY (http://www.wyntoontrip.com/MONUMENT1.html) It will show you a little of what you will see! You will Love Monument Valley  just like Duke was still there!!! Chilibill :cowboy:
Hondo Duke Lane April 20th, 2005, 07:14 PM Hey Bill,
You'd be a great tour guide. I'd love to get there for your guided history of the great ones at the valley. Will you be able to fly for this, or driving will have to be the option?
Cheers B)
General Sterling Price April 21st, 2005, 07:43 PM I am jealous to hear of all of your visits to Duke film sites. I guess the only one I have been to is Sedona, AZ where they filmed Angel and the Badman. My wife though has been the area in Colorado where they filmed True Grit, and even was given directions to a tree that Wayne had carved his initials into it. It was still very readable. We hope to go back there someday and try to find it again.
InHarmsWay April 22nd, 2005, 07:25 PM Bill, truly AMAZING pictures from Monument Valley...my favorite would have to be the storm coming in...you caught it right at the most perfect time. After seeing those i believe my mind is a most deffinite for monument valley in 2007.
It would be the perfect way to celebrate the Duke's 100th...

chester7777 August 14th, 2008, 11:53 PM It's been a LONG time since this thread's seen the light of day.
While we didn't make it to Monument Valley in 2007, several members made it to Winterset (not a movie location, but Duke's birthplace) and some of us made it to the 26 Bar Ranch (also not a movie location, but used to be Duke's ranch).
Have any of our newer members been to any of Duke's movie locations (or maybe some long-time members who didn't see this thread the first time around)?
Chester :newyear:
ethanedwards August 15th, 2008, 05:19 AM Been to Hawaii, Honolulu,
and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel,
where Duke is reported to have filmed.
And of course, the USS Arizona, at Pearl Harbor,
where in the movie Big Jim McLain,
Duke and Jame Arness were shown
at the memorial.
On visiting Seattle, took in many of the locations,
where McQ was filmed.
Obviously, being in the UK, visiting London,
would take you past and around,
most of the locations of Brannigan
Piccadilly Circus, being on any tourist trip.
ethanedwards August 15th, 2008, 05:37 AM We also have a dedicated forum
Duke's Movie Locations (http://www.dukewayne.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44)
where any particular location can be seen and discussed.
For example we have a thread showing where some of The Shootist was filmed
Duke's Movie Locations- Nevada (http://www.dukewayne.com/showthread.php?t=2626)
Jay J. Foraker August 15th, 2008, 12:33 PM Have any of our newer members been to any of Duke's movie locations (or maybe some long-time members who didn't see this thread the first time around)?

I must have missed this first time around! I have traveled to Bracketville myself, since it's only about 130 miles west of here.
