View Full Version : If ...
Dragn March 26th, 2005, 05:46 AM If John Wayne and most of the Golden Age actors were still living and making movies, whom would you like to see J. W. make a movie with? For me, I'd love to see J. W. make another movie with James Stewart. To me, Jimmy Stewart was as great and as versatile an actor as ever lived. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Shootist are two of my all-time favorite movies. I would have loved if J. W. had lived 10 years or longer just so those two men could reunite in one more movie. I'd also like to see Maureen O'Hara play the leading lady with Angelina Jolie and Ashley Judd playing daughters or something. Also, I would have loved to see The Duke in a movie with The Terminator. lol Wayne and Schwarzenegger? Who wouldn't have loved to have seen that? lol (and btw ... a little known fact; in the late 70's Schwarzenegger co-starred in a movie with none other than a friend of John Wayne and co-star for several of his movies; Kirk Douglas. It was called The Villian and was released in 1979. Schwarzenegger's name in the movie? Handsome Stranger. :uhuh: ).
SXViper March 26th, 2005, 09:30 AM I remember the Villian and I remember enough about it to say that I didn't care for it.
Also, If Duke was still alive there are only a couple people I would have liked to see him make a movie with and they are Mel Gibson, Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot.
chester7777 March 26th, 2005, 09:33 AM I think it would have been kind of fun if the Duke had done a walk through in the saloon in the third installment of Back to the Future. Did you know that one of Duke's co-stars, Harry Carey Jr., had a part in that movie? So did one of Roy Rogers' crew, Pat Buttram. Duke would have been 83 when the movie was made (in 1990), so would have fit in perfectly with the "old-timers." And parts of the movie were shot in Monument Valley, so it would have been like old home week for some of those guys.
I think it would beinteresting to see John Wayne with Cary Grant or Clark Gable. Maybe all three of them, widowers, trying to woo Maureen O'Hara . . . ., with her son Mel Gibson trying to keep them at bay (I know, Grumpier Old Men has already been done, but this is a fun twist) .
And speaking of Clark Gable, see my post in Off Topic Discussions for an interesting story.

The Ringo Kid March 26th, 2005, 02:19 PM Great topic.
I would have loved to see The Duke in movies with the following actors.
Humphrey Bogart.
James Cagney.
Pat O'Brien.
Van Johnson.
Cary Grant.
Ronald Reagan.
Errol Flynn.
Gregory Peck.
David Niven.
James Mason.
James Whitmore Sr.
Richard Egan.
Kenneth More.
Sir John Mills.
Bruce Bennett.
Charlton Heston.
Telly Savalas.
Clint Eastwood.
Charles Bronson.
Gene Autry.
Buster Crabbe.
Robert Taylor.
Harry Andrews.
Trevor Howard,
Howard de Silva.
Gary Cooper.
Glenn Ford.
Just to name a few.
Of the more modern actors, I think John Wayne probably would not have minded working with Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Sean Connery and a few others. However, though I like Schwarzenegger, I doubt he would have cared much for working with him-though it would have been a nice thing to see.
Robbie March 27th, 2005, 12:18 PM According to sources on this messageboard Arnie was a big fan of Duke.
The only person in the world I wish duke had made a movie with and that was Clint Eastwood.
Finally I see an old topic of mine has been brought up again and I noticed Chester you made the same suggestion on that regarding Duke doing a cameo in Back to the Future I was thinking of this suggestion and you are right. He could have had a few funny lines like going up to Mcfly who was calling himself Clint Eastwood and going 'you know Clint theres always somebody out there better than you'. Or when Mcfly is deciding what time to have the showdown with the bad guy he suggests High Noon, Duke could have stood at the side and said I wouldn't be in favour of that its very un American to have shootouts at that time how about sunrise instead. Yes Chester I think Duke could have had a lot of fun in that movie.

Dragn March 31st, 2005, 09:51 AM Ole Clint was around when The Duke was still making movies. I always wondered what kind of chemistry they would have had on screen together if they'd ever made a movie. Saddens me we'll never know. :( Also, I was wondering if anyone knew why The Duke never made any movies with Hitchcock or Monroe (I actually heard at one time he was thinking of doing a movie until he found out Monroe was his leading lady. Apparently, if this rumor is true, he thought Monroe was a floozy and/or a slut and didn't want to be in a movie with her.) Also, I've only seen about 70 of the 200+ movies he made, so does anyone know if he ever did anything in the sci-fi or horror genres?
arthurarnell March 31st, 2005, 11:53 AM Hi
The reason Duke would never appear in a picture with Monroe had nothing to do with her sexual history or preferences. He also like most of the actors in Hollywood felt a great sadness about the way Marylin Monroe conducted her career or was used by people. He would never appear with her because when it came down to the bottom line he was the ultimate professional, but he also wouldn't suffer incompetence or fools.
On the set of the misfits Clark Gable, also a true professional patiently sat under a burning sky day after day waiting for her to turn up on the set, eventually it killed him, Duke rightly was too big, and I dont place a duke above a king, to allow this to happen to him.
People like Tony Curtis and Laurence Olivier both slagged Monroe off, the one being considered as kissing an ash tray, the other for non proffesionalism, but I would suspect that these were in the minority.

arthurarnell March 31st, 2005, 12:20 PM Hi Ringo
Your lish of people you would have like to see work with John Wayne is long. Many of them were connected with Wayne in one way or the other.
Howard Da Silva for instance featured with Duke in Re-nion in France.
An in his book In The Arena Charlton Heston relates how with the making of The longest Day he wanted desperately to play the role of Benjaman Vandervort. He later said that this 600ib gorilla wanted to play the American Colonel but their was a 1000ib gorilla with more clout who wanted the same roll. Charlto Heston admitting that Wayne carried more than 400Ibs more clout than Heston doesn't diminish heston in my eyes, and although I may be on dodgy ground, I still think that Charlton Heston was a very fine actor and an even finer human being. And he also shares a credit with Duke for The Greatest Story Ever Told.
And talking about the Longest Day
Kenneth More is included in my list of Actors in John Wayne films as is Sean Connery Richard Burton Harry Fowler and Michael Medwin and although peope in the States may say who the heck is Harry Fowler and Michael Medwin, they are both well known jobbing British actors both wore a British uniform rushed up the beach and earned their fifteen minutes as much as their more illustrious counterparts.
Cary Grant guested in Without Reservations
Gregory Peck played opposite Debbie Reyonlds in How The West was Won
And it is rumoured that John Wayne made a fleeting appearance in Gene Autry's Melody Ranch although this is a believe it if you want to some credits give it some don't.
Gary Cooper appeared with Duke in one of the early Hollywood handicap pictures.
It amazing what association can do although they may not have stood face to face ans spoke to each other, although Da Cilva may have, they share a mutal credit.

Arthur
itdo March 31st, 2005, 01:32 PM I can't remember where I read it but somebody did serious research on Melody Ranch and found the proof that this could not have happened due to Wayne's schedule in another film at another studio at that same time. So this one is definitely burried.
The Ringo Kid April 1st, 2005, 12:22 PM Hi Arthur, thanks for all of this. I had not known the Duke did time with many of these listed. I had completely forgotten about Richard Burton being in The Longest Day with him.
I think I definately need to bone up on my John Wayne films--other than War and Westerns of course.
A few days ago, I watched about 30 minutes of a movie with John Wayne and Don DeFore in it. I think it was a comedy and it had Claudette Colbert, can't recall the title.
arthurarnell April 1st, 2005, 01:06 PM Hi Roland, Ringo
It was Tim Lillee who looking at the timing of the pictures found out that he left one picture late on one day and started a new picture the next he couldn't possibly have made even a fleeting appearince on Melody Ranch, unless of course they were on adjoining lots and he stopped by for a sandwich during his lunch. But some biographers still persist in crediting him with this picture.
Ringo the film you were watching was Without Reservations. This has a large array of fleeting guest appearances including Cary Grant and Jack Benny.
Regards
Arthur
The Ringo Kid April 2nd, 2005, 02:00 PM :cowboy: Thank you Arthur, I could not think of the films name. I'll have to watch it in full next time it's on. BTW, I am a fan of Cary Grant as well. I wonder if Destination Tokyo and Gunga Din have been released yet?
