To all,

The link which I am sharing below is one that may have been shared before, if that's the case I apologize, but with the latest Picture Game, #4, I thought you all might enjoy reading a little more about Maureen O'Hara and some of her thoughts on working with John Wayne.

Here's the link:
http://www.moharamagazine.com/

Scrolling down just a little and you will see a button, "Features on Maureen and John Wayne" that you might enjoy.

Happy reading!

Cheers :D ,

Shootister,

Very close to the top of the page you get to when you click on the link in my original post, there is a box that lists the editor (as well as the web designer and composer) as June Parker Beck. Beyond that, I can't tell you more, except that she is not my mother, my sister, my friend, or even a casual acquaintance of mine. It would appear she is an avid fan of Maureen O'Hara.

The following idea is one we saw over at the McCandles Texas forum at Yahoo. We thought it was a terrific way to honor Maureen O'Hara during the week before her birthday, and hope you'll take part.

This Sunday August 17, 2003 will be Maureen O'Hara's 83rd birthday. I thought it would be a great Group project if we would take this week and all of us post our favorite Maureen O'Hara film memory.

It could be from a film she did with the Duke or one of her own. I hope all of you will take the time to post your favorite memory sometime this week.

I need to think about this one a little, so will post mine later this week.

Robbie (and everybody else),

Post here, and start immediately!

Here are some favorites from my family -

I truly enjoyed Maureen O'Hara in McLintock - she shows a wonderful gamut of emotions between incredibly feisty and quietly soft (like when she's recalling to her daughter about her early married years).

My wife and kids really like her role in the Disney movie The Parent Trap (1961), with Hayley Mills and Brian Keith. She is so vivacious in that one. My wife also has a soft spot in her heart for the movie The Christmas Box (1995), where Maureen O'Hara starred with Richard Thomas and Annette O'Toole.

And we all love seeing her in Miracle on 34th Street!

I really enjoyed the 1998 made for TV movie "Cab to Canada" B) Maureen O'Hara portrays Katherine Eure who calls a cab in Pasadena California and ends up making the cab driver go all the way to Vancouver BC

Ms. O'Hara is one of my favorite actresses, and just loved her in almost everything. I cant' think of anything she did that I didn't like. How Green Was My Valley is most excellent with a young Rodney McDowell, and Walter Pigeon. To the Shores of Tripoli with John Payne was another good movie, also with Randolph Scott.

Of course she was really great in Miracle on 34th Street, with a young Natalie Wood, and John Payne, and a great and I would say the best Santa Clause in Edmund Gween. Also with Natalie she starred with Fred MacMurray in Father was a Fullback, and also with Betty Lynn (Thema Lou in the Andy Griffin Show {Barney Fife's girlfriend}).

Going on, she was also great in The Parent Trap, with Brian Keith, and Halley Mills, and also The Rare Breed with James Stewart, Brain Keith, and Halley's sister Juliet Mills. Spencer's Mountain with Henry Fonda is a classic.

Some westerns that I really enjoyed excluding movies with Duke, is Comanche Territory with MacDonald Carey, The Redhead from Wyoming with Alex Nicol, and War Arrow with Jeff Chandler.

Who could forget her in The Black Swan with Tyrone Power, and Anthony Quinn. And her most recent release at the silver screen as she teams up with Anthony Quinn in Only The Lonely. This costars John Candy, Alley Sheedy, James Belushi, and a cameo appearance with Macuaulay Culkin.

I do have all these movies (mainly on VHS). I have seen them all. She is one of the tops as far as I am concerned. She should have been listed as the top 50 actresses in AFI's top stars. She is definately one of them.

Maureen, I want to wish you a very happy birthday, and you age very beautifully. Thank you for being a part of our lives in many ways. Happy 83rd pretty lady.

Cheers, Hondo B)

I agree, she may be 83, but she still does it for me. A natural beauty. One of my favorite scenes of her was in Rio Grand when the Sons of the Pioneers are singing to her character Kathleen and Duke's Sgt. York I'll take you home, Kathleen and the look in her eyes as she looks at her husband speak volumes without a word being uttered. Awsome! Happy Birthday to a great Actress and a beautiful gal. dukefan1

I just found your great forum and I've been stumbling through this format - it has so many features!!! Yesterday I thought I was posting and it turns out I was sending e-mails. Doesn't "PM" mean "post message?" ROFL Oh well - it's a cool format so bear with me while I figure it out. Duh!

I have a website on Maureen O'Hara - http://www.moharamagazine.com which has been published since 1996. I do have contact with Ms. O'Hara. I have been fortunate in that she has endorsed my Internet efforts and helps me with facts and other input. She is a stickler for detail...and setting the record straight. Not to worry because her autobiography "Tis Herself" will be published by Simon and Schuster - probably in March of 2004. The book is complete and just awaiting minor edits.

I did ask her yesterday about the TQM spanking topic...and she echoed what many of you thought already - "It didn't happen." She and Duke carefully choreographed that entire scene and to have stopped for a spanking would have impeded the forward progress of the dragging scene. At any rate - now you know for sure - from someone who was there and whose bottom would have been on the receiving end of such an action.

When I began my research I quickly found it necessary to read all I could about John Wayne and John Ford so I made some great friends on that side of the coin. Tim Lilley of "The Big Trail" is the absolute expert on John Wayne and most every biographer consult him as they write.

I'll include my URL of some of my research material over the years.

It's just great to have you here June, and I guess I'm speaking for all if I may ask you to send Mrs O'Hara our best wishes. Can't wait to read her biography, we have been waiting for that one a long time, and I'm sure her wit will make the waiting worthwhile. There have been plans once for a Quiet Man - sequel in which she would play the mother of Sean Thornton's sons who leave Ireland for the US. Maybe you know more about that project - will it come off the ground in the future?

This message board really does have many features that take quite a while to sort out, but once you do, it's great! (Hey, it's a great message board even if you never figure out all the bells and whistles . . . :) .)

I hope you'll share your knowledge with us on many topics!

Hello Juneface. I heard a while ago that Mrs. O'hara had her pocketbook stollen with very special memories inside it. Did she ever get it back and did they catch the evil person who did it? With a career such as hers and as long as hers, I am sure the items she had inside (pics and stuff) were a hard thing to lose. I hope she got them back. Any info? dukefan1

Hi

I had an interesting day yesterday I thought I'd get to London early (its only an hour and a half by train). I got to the station and found that there were no trains in or out of Portsmouth for two days because of line repairs. So we had to go by bus to Havant a small town about four miles outside of Portsmouth. after leaving home at 0805 by 0935 I was at last on a train to London, so much for an early start.
Arrrived in London shortly after 1100 made my way to Harrods and met Karen Cooksley who is Ithink June Becks second in command on the Maureen O'Hara magazine. She comes from Dallas Texas and was combining the visit qwith a holiday. I also met Arild, a Norwegian teacher and his friend, and trevor and his wife wh come from Bedhampton which is in between Portsmouth and Havant and who by coincidence worked in the same building that i was in during the late seventies and early eighties. They were nice people. Started to queue at 1200, the signing was due to start at 1400.
Behind us was a little old lady and another man who at first I thought were together but it later transpired that they didn't know each other (more about him later in another thread).
Time passed and then it was announced that Maureen when she arrived was very frail, and would be in a wheelchair, she would not write dedications, she would not sign photographs and no cameras were allowed. By 1400 I would estimate their being about five to six hundred people in the queue.
As We got round the corner she was surrounded by people cameras were flashing left right and sideways and she was talking. If she was a frail old lady I hope I'm that frail if I reach her age.
Just as It was near my turn the man at the head of the queue looked at my book and said she might not sign that as its American but by hiding the cover she signed. I had taken a picture of her that I hoped she might sign, but in the end didn't press my luck, thankful that after two and half hours I had got the book signed. Although she was signing pictures as well as books. despite the officials trying to stop herr talking to the people she did hold conversations but I must admit I was tongue tied and just said thank you.
After we all went for a drink and I left to get home, pick up a Chinese Takeaway
and relax. It had been a long day.

I took some photographs I don't know if they came out, I'll have to wait for my son to check the camera for me, If I can I will put some on the board.

Regards

Congratulations, Arthur, so glad you could make it.

Even for a brief moment, you have been in her presence, and that's something you might want to remember every time you watch on of her movies thereafter.
Those marketing people ALWAYS say: the star is tired, please no questions, and at a booksigning they ALWAYS say: no autographs on pictures (cause they wanna sell the books) but the stars themselves are never like that. Yet if you want to do an interview or talk about that board you better check with the managment for extra time.
I'm up to my neck in work and therefore couldn't have gone to London (which would have been the shorter trip than Dublin). Where in Ireland do you live, Robbie?

Hi Roland

I think you are right about the stars,

The only thing that was a slight let down was the attitude of some of the shop assistant who began complaining about all the people who were gathered around and were saying that it was ridiculous.

You are right I will never forget Saturday, and what these people don't realise or couldn,' care about is this was the only chance myself and many many people like me will have of seeing her, some like me have watched her pictures since the early fifties, and although other might deride it as trite, for about six hundred people Saturday was an unforgettable experience.

I had an experience like that the last time I was stationed in Germany (US European Command in Stuttgart). One day I was sitting in my office and one of my soldiers rushed in and breathlessly said, "Hey, Sarge, guess who I just saw down at the tennis courts?" I said, "Who? and he said "Charlton Heston". (This was about 1973)

Well, since Heston has always been one of my favorite actors I naturally went to the tennis courts to see if the guy was telling the truth. Sure enough, there he was big as life, er, Moses, playing tennis with an officer. :D

Straightaway, I rushed to my quarters and got one of my books about the movies, went back to the courts and after he finished his game, asked him to autograph my book. He asked my name and when I told him, he wrote on the flyleaf "Jim, Glad to have met you in Stuttgart. [signed] CHARLTON HESTON." It's a treasured possession.

I learned later that his sister was married to one of the generals we had in the headquarters and he was visiting her.

Hi Roland

I was just about to leave home and thought that I'm likely to get in such a state that I would probably put the book down somewhere and lose it, so at the last minute I picked up the first career bag that came to hand stuffed the book in it. Later I put the newspaper I was reading on the train and while I was in the queue the gentleman from Norway very kindly gave me a copy of the Irish American magazine with Maureen on the front cover. So that went into the bag.

The first thing my wife said when she saw the original picture Why didn't you lose the bag. But in that rush and on that occasion rational thinking goes out of the window.

Saw the interview with Richard and Judy last night

She was asked about her experiences with John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart she had a slight senior moment when she forgot what she was going to say but after that she was fine.
They showed a couple of clips from the Quiet Man and she explained off set that she had broken her wrist when she slapped John Wayne.
She also related the incident with James Stewart after she had stolen a scene off of him and his reaction.
Also showed a clip from the Rare Breed with good ole Jack Elam and Jimmy Stewart in the fight.
And then the difference between John Wayne who said about a shot go ahead and try to steal the scene and as he walked away he looked back and said if you can.

The final question asked was if she ever thought that John Wayne ever loved her.
She replied with an emphatic no saying that they were always friends but she didn't think he loved her.

The interview ended with a clip from Rio Grande
I got the impression that Maureen was happy to sit and talk all night but she didn't get on screen until ten minutes from the end of the programe.

It sort of capped the weekend.

Maureen O'Hara once testified befroe congress on behalf of John Wayne. I am looking to see how many people I can find who feel, like me, that she should be so recognized herself and would be willing to join a campaign to accomplish this ASAP. I believe we can bring to light all that she has cotributed artisitically and culturally since coming to the United States and that we should do so.
Please respond with any opinions and ideas, all will be greatly appreciated. TY , Ryan
