View Full Version : John Wayne "movie series"
bagheera99 May 17th, 2003, 03:20 PM Anyone know of some John Wayne movies that were like a series? (such as Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and Rio Grande).
I know there were some movies about The Three Mesquiteers (or something like that). What were the names of those movies.
Also there was a whole set (like 8 or so) of early ones that were done around the same time. In all of them Wayne played a person named "John" and rode a horse named "Duke". Anyone know the names of them either?
Thanks for any information!
REASR May 18th, 2003, 10:23 PM According to the movie "the Shootist"
Dunson , John T Chance , Hondo Lane and Cole Thorton
were all J.B.Books.
Who'd have thought!

Rick,
You lost me here. Could you please explain a little more?
Chester
Robbie May 19th, 2003, 11:06 AM Yo Chester I know what he means look at the opening credits at the start of the Shootist it shows clips from Rio Bravo, El dorado etc.
By the way Rio Bravo, Eldorado and Rio Lobo was an unofficial trilogy.

Hey, thanks for "educating" me! I felt compelled to pull out the video and watch at least the opening credits, and lo and behold, there it was. I'd missed that every other time I watched the movie, but I'll probably notice it every time hereafter.
Thanks again! :)

I would have to disagree with that piece of trivia, respectfully of course. I don't think that by using the clips from Red River, El Dorado, or Rio Bravo in the beginning of The Shootist the intent was to suggest that J.B. Books was all of these people just using different identities throughout his life. I don't think that is it at all. I think that the makers of the movie and Duke realized that this movie was most likely his last, so they put in some of his old clips just as sort of a semi-comprehensive view of his career as a cowboy. I too noticed these clips as parts of his other movies and never once did the thought cross my mind that J.B. Books also went by and lived as Dunson, Thorton, or Chance or any of the other characters shown in the beginning intro in his life along the way. I think that this was just a way to use younger stages of John Wayne's career to explain how Books lived his life and it just gave an oppurtunity to give a very small tribute to a long and very distinguished career as a cowboy actor.
Respectfully,
Idaho

Your information is just a little wrong this time the scenes at the start were supposed to relate to JB Books. Ron Hoard states that JB was a lawman it then shows a clip from Rio Bravo and so it continues this way.
Finally nobody thought that this was going to be Johns last movie especially John because he bought the rights for another film Beau Jon.

BrianB July 2nd, 2003, 04:41 AM I thought that using clips from earlier movies was a great way to show J.B.Books past. I never took it as trying to tie in all the moves, but as a good way to show J.B. books as a younger person.
