View Full Version : Rio Bravo/el Dorado/rio Lobo
General Sterling Price June 25th, 2005, 02:49 PM I have had in mind to start this topic for some time. These three films seem to come to the top of our list when we just want to have fun watching a Duke film.
The code below is :RB = Rio Bravo, ED = El Dorado, RL = Rio Lobo
We all have probably noticed the similarities, but I thought it would be fun to document them and see what we can come up with.
1) They were all directed by Howard Hawks
2) They were all filmed at the Old Tucson set, which means:
A. Its the same jail at the end of the street (though re-modeled inside)
B. Its the same hotel (also remodeled inside)
C. Its the same main street, and same saloons.
3) Each film has a climatic prisoner exchange:
RB: Dude for Burdette
ED: Thornton for Jason
RL: Cordona for Ketchum
4) Each film has an old coot for comic relief:
RB: Stumpy (the best!)
ED: Bull
RL: Phillips
5) Each film has a young gunslinger with a state name:
RB: Colorado
ED: Mississippi (ok, a knife slinger)
RL: Tuscorora (ok, maybe they should have called him Alabama)
6) Two of the films mention a no-good girl that "just got off the stage" and caused heartbreak for a law-man that led to his drunkeness:
RB: Dude
ED: J. P. Harrah
7) Each film has a gambler's widow who becomes the chief romantic interest:
RB: Feathers - interesting in Chance
ED: Maude - interested in Thornton
RL: Shasta - interested in Cordona (although Wayne is "comfortable")
8) Each film has a bad boss-man who "hires it done"
RB: Nathan Burdette
ED: Bart Jason
RL: Ketchum
9) Each film features a posse of professional gunslingers who harass the good guys in each film. Wayne leads a team of good guys who are out-manned, out-gunned, and are either crippled, inexperienced, or coming off a long period of drunkeness.
10) Each film is named with a geographical placename, two of them rivers.
Personal opinion: With the exception of Maude, each film's lead female character is drippy and annoying to listen to.
Did I cover it? Please add other things you have noticed.
Best wishes,
GSP

I would agree with your assesment. Plus Maude was easy on the eyes!!
Robbie June 25th, 2005, 03:28 PM I suppose you could mention that John Wayne starred in all of them. :D

I don't agree with this. I thought Angie did an outstanding job as Feathers. In fact, she was by far my favorite of the three female leads.

I agree with Stumpy her performance was authenitic maybe thats why many dont like it.

Robbie June 26th, 2005, 01:35 PM John Wayne was captured in all three movies at some stage.
John Wayne was wounded several times in each movie RB hit over the head with a lump of stick, knocked out and hit by Dean Martin, Eldorado, shot in the back and later shot in the leg and in RL he was knocked out and later shot in the leg.
John Wayne wore his famous pink shirt in all three movies although it was a little redder in RB.
John Wayne meets up with old friends in each movie Wheeler in RB, Swede and the two sheriffs in ED and the Sheriff of Blackthorn in RL.
John Wayne confronts the bad guys with a rifle durring the climax of each movie.
Each movie has an exchange of guns such as Nelson throwing Duke his gun, Mitchum and Duke throwing the rifle at each other and Duke changing his rifle befroe the shootout in RL.
People show up at the end of each movie to help the Duke Carlos and Stumpy in RB, Joey in ED and half the town rather annoyingly in RL.

I didn't say I didn't like her Angie's character, I just said I thought Charlene Holt was easy on the eyes. I think Rio Bravo is Duke's number 2 western behind "The Searchers".
Robbie June 26th, 2005, 05:49 PM John Wayne is aided in shootouts by females in RB feathers throws a jar out the window, in ED Joey shoots Jason and in RL one of the girls shoots Hendrix.
Several key scenes in each movie take place around the interiors of a jail house.
John Wayne gets wet in all three movies although not by his own choice, water is thrown on his face in RB, he falls of his horse into water in ED and in RL he is pulled of his horse into water.
In two movies RB+ED the good guys have to go into a saloon to find the assassins, in addition there is an alcholic in these two movies.

JOHNWAYNEABE June 26th, 2005, 06:08 PM Regardless all three are great movies with Angie being my favorite of all the ladies she is sexy as hell. :cowboy:
Robbie June 26th, 2005, 06:10 PM John Wayne is knocked out in all three movies, lol the similarities are endless.

General Sterling Price June 26th, 2005, 10:07 PM Robbie, thanks for your input, you found a whole bunch more to add to the list. GSP
Hondo Duke Lane June 27th, 2005, 03:51 PM Duke's character wasn't actually knocked out in ED. He became paralyzed from a gun shot wound. It was Mississippi who was knocked out in that movie.
Good, uh, GREAT TOPIC, GSP!
Cheers B)

Hi Mike
In ED the Doctor used Chlorpene to knock Duke out so he could perform his medical aid.

General Sterling Price June 30th, 2005, 08:48 PM Robbie,...that's right, I forgot about the doc knocking him out, although they only show the doc bringing him around, but it was clear he had been knocked out. He had a funny line too, Paul Fix did, when asked about what Wayne could do...he said, "Don't go bouncing him around."
ethanedwards July 1st, 2005, 01:36 PM Hi GSP,
Out of the three sidekicks,
I thought Rick Nelson, as Colorado,
was the weakest of them!
Great singer, but poor actor.
The song, around the Red River theme, with Dino,
was great.
He was about as an effective gunslinger,
as a lettuce, and the way he kept on saying
Sheri....without the f sound, drove me nuts!!
Emmanuel July 1st, 2005, 02:25 PM Hi Guys
After reading the above, I have to agree, Great movies, Good looking women, and bags of baddies.
Oh, and one or two similarities.
Emmanuel.
Robbie July 1st, 2005, 04:38 PM In all three movies the bad guys have control of the town, Berdette in RB, Jason in El dorado and Ketchum in RL.
:agent:
Robbie July 3rd, 2005, 01:12 PM In each movie somebody is knocked out by a gun:
Joe in RB
Mississippi in ED
Random Guard in RL.
John Wayne wears both a blue and pink shirt in each movie along with white trousers.
The badguys mount an effective counter attack in each movie:
They capture dude in RB
Duke is captured in ED
Cordonna is captured in RL
In each movie there is a person whom is quite fond of a drink:
Dude in RB
JP in ED
Mr Philips in RL
There is a small shootout in each movie in which Duke kills two men:
In RB its when Duke is thrown his gun by Colarado
In ED its when Duke nails the two assassins in the church
In RL its the shootout in the saloon.
Duke talks to a girl in each movie whom is half dressed:
In RB its feathers as she lies in bed.
In ED its Maudie as he arrives in town with Mississippi
In RL its O'neill after she faints.
Somebody in the town in each movie provides Duke with information:
Carlos informs Duke of Berdettes immenent arrival in RB to visit his brother.
A young girl enters the jail to bring Duke a letter in ED
The dentist provides duke with information in RL.
Somebody plays a musical instrument in each
Nelson and Dud in RB
Guy at the saloon in ED
