Are Hockey Films Doomed from the minute Actors put their Skates on. I recently bought They where expendable on DVD and i got a bonus John Wayne DvD along with it which was Idol Of the crowds. I had seen the film along time ago, but it was only until i seen the film again that I realised The Duke was best suited to the western Genre. Sports drama is just not his thing, If i had of seen him in that film in 1937 id never have thought films like they where expendable would have been possible. Then I thought hockey films have had little succes anyway within the film industry in large. Its not surprising that the great man failed when cast in this role.

Hi Shootister

We meet again

I havent seen this movie but a lot of reviews give it a good ratings, is this the one where John is bribed into throwing Ice Hockey matches by gangers whom John must confront in a gripping finale?

P.s. Shootister in what country is the movie set????????? Only joking ;)

Youve got the film right robbie but watch the film your self and you will have to question the people who review films if the have gave it a good rating. There is a finale but gripping isnt the word as its an ice rink and all its pretty slippery im just kiddin. The film is set in the United States of America I think but i could be wrong on that account.

As a John Wayne fan this film does sound like an interesting change of pace for the big man and a film that I would like to see.

Shootister do you like John Wayne films and if so do you have a favourite.

Great comments smokey,

They Were Expendable was a great movie, and Ford's classic hit. Just a little trival, Ford was real hard on Duke in that movie because he wasn't in WWII. If you noticed, Duke didn't get top billing, and Ford was a pain in the butt to Wayne. Duke let it roll off, but of course all was forgiven at the end. Anyway, Shootister, I know you are a Duke fan, and I bet you've seen a lot of his movies if not all.

Keep up the good work, all.

Hondo

Northerner,

I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the John Wayne Message Board. I've enjoyed reading your posts. I've been away for almost a week, so have quite a bit of reading to catch up on :) !

Regarding your question as to where to get They Were Expendable, here are a few suggestions:

www.amazon.com
(They have quite a selection of JW movies, both new and used, and the used tend to be quite reasonable. I got a colorized version, used but like new, for half the price of a new one, at amazon.com. Since it takes place in the South Pacific around harbors and bays, the colorized version brings out all the beauty of the water and the surrounding greenery. I know some consider colorizing heresy, but I like it in many cases :P .)

www.ebay.com
(It pays to have some idea of what some movies are worth, before you get caught up in a bidding battle and end up paying too much, but it is a source.)

www.moviesunlimited.com
(Good source for hard-to-find titles, reasonably priced.)

I know that Hondo has some sources he likes for DVDs, and I'm sure he'll share them with you at his first opportunity.

Again, welcome aboard . . . :D

Another side story about They Were Expendable. Duke was saluting in a part and Ford kept making him do it over, finally making a comment about how he doesn't know how to salute since he didn't serve in the war. Robert Montgomery then put both hands on Ford's chair and told him never to do that to Duke again. Since Ford respected Montgomery, he let it go. Just thought I'd share that. dukefan1

Great comment Dukefan1,

I forgot that, and that was a great comment about Ford's disgust of Duke not going to war. I appreciate that comment.

Northerner,

I have a source that has been great to find the best price for DVD's. This is an online service for online outlets. But they get you the best prices for any kind of DVD, including Duke.

;)

Go to: http://www.dvdpricesearch.net/

You'll be happy with the results. By the way, this is for anyone who is interested. I've found that the best prices in purchasing DVD is DeepDiscount.com.

Robbie,

If you like John Wayne movies (And I know you do), and war movies with zest, then this is the movie to get. Very good to say the least.

Robbie,

They Were Expendable is my favorite John Wayne movie of all. It is definitely worth watching. In my mind, though, it just barely squeaks ahead of The Shootist or The Quiet Man. As you have indicated, everybody has their own opinions, and that's mine.

I'm a little prejudiced toward it, as I spent time in the US Navy, down in those tropical areas, around boats and small harbors, and it brings back a lot of memories (though my memories are not from WWII).

In many ways, the movie is rather slow moving, and a little boring to some, but I feel that is the true essence of what the war was like for many involved. So . . . go out and rent it, if it is available, or buy it.

I hear that John Wayne gets quite a minimal character to play and is second rate in most of the scenes is that true because it would be a big problem for me as I like to see Duke commanding the screen.

Some of Dukes pre Stagecoach movies are pretty good Im looking foward to watching this one as it is a bit different, it has got great reviews and there is supposedly an explosive and unforgettable ending, without giving away to much Shootister is there much action in this movie.

Robbie is there action!!!!,

Its one of John Waynes Finest performances, and I think Johns Character is is the strongest in the movie, he definatley commands the screen i havent seen a reasonable john wayne movie yet where he hasnt commanded the screen. :P

After reviewing a web site that gives information on which movie stars served in WWII (and what their duties were), an interesting tidbit that dovetails with the discussion on They Were Expendable is that Robert Montgomery, who starred with John Wayne in that movie, really was a PT boat commander.

The address of the site is:

I think that Haunted Gold and Rndy Rides alone are pretty good for B movies although I have not seen Idol Of Crowds so I cannot comment on it

Shootister,

I've noticed that you are hyper sensitive when confronted with superior wit. I am afraid that you have some confidence issues.
