View Full Version : Letter To The Golden Age
JWAngel July 23rd, 2005, 09:02 PM :) We all love their movies so much. I have often wished that I could thank them for the wonderful movies they made. What would you say to the actors and actresses of the Golden Age (1920-1960) if you could write them a letter? Or more specifically (since we are so found of Duke) to the members of the Ford Stock Company?
I think I would tell them what their films mean to me. I would thank them for their sacrifices. For those many hot days in Monument Valley. I would thank them for their performance and the wonderful, inspiring scripts they brought to life. I'd thank them for making the kind of movies that built up good values instead of tearing them down.
 I'm curious. What would you say? I hope you will join in this discussion.
arthurarnell July 24th, 2005, 04:17 AM Hi JW Angel
I'd probably share your comments, I have written to many of the actors of that period expressing comments in a similar vein, most don't bother to reply, Others like Charlton Heston Harry Carey Junior Pancho Gonzales Gonzales among others just send signed photographs.
The stunt performer Neil Summers sent a two page letter detailing his experiences with the Duke and I will copy it on to this site when I get an opportunity, he seems a nice man, as is Dean Smith, Rudy Robbins John Agar and Lyle Bettger who also replied.

I have to agree, these "Golden Age" celebrities are some of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. Even after all these years they still haven't forgotten their fans, and still take time to respond when you write to them. I wrote to John Agar a few years before he passed, and received a wonderful letter and he even sent an autographed 8x10. Although he did have a few problems during his career, I think he was pretty good actor and a real nice fella. I also wrote to Harry Carey Jr. a few years ago, and he wrote back as well. When I found that he had a website (I'll put the web adress below), I thought I'd send him an email and just say howdy. He sent one back! A great man and actor! Ya gotta love Ol' Dobe! I hope he makes another film appearance, as I sure like seeing him on the big screen. Well, there's my two cents. I'll be seeing y'all.

Well, Bob, you can brag about your autographed pictures from Dobe and Agar but I've got an autographed biography from the most popular Golden Age actor ever, the Duke himself.
ethanedwards July 25th, 2005, 04:31 PM Can't beat that one Jim,
but I have a book, and notes etc, that Harry Jnr has signed and sent to me!
When I wished him Happy Birthday, not long ago,
he e-mailed me straight back, saying,
How very kind of it was, of me, to remember!
What a very nice man, he must be!

Which bio do you have, Sis? Mine is Maurice Zolotow's "Shooting Star" It must have been an unauthorized biography, because of the Duke's note to me that accompanied the autograph, but I thought the entire tone of the book was very complimentary toward Duke so don't understand why he was so upset with Zolotow.
Anyway, on the flyleaf he wrote:
"Jim,
This fellow made mighty insulting mistakes in this book and wrote without permission, but I guess it doesn't matter, nobody's perfect.

chester7777 July 25th, 2005, 11:55 PM Stumpy,
Now there's going to be a run on those things at abebooks.com
I checked on ebay, and found Zolotow's book selling anywhere from $2.50 to $4.00 on Buy It Now, paperback and hardback. Over on Abebooks, the prices ranged from $1 to $4 for a paperback copy, and from $4 to $127 for hardbound, with the higher priced ones autographed by the author. There was one in the $35 range, a first edition from a United Kingdom publisher (almost all the rest were from Simon & Schuster).
Imagine what it must be worth with John Wayne's autograph in it! :o
