I was wondering if anyone was aware of Duke having a series of comic books? I ran across some interesting fact that Duke had some out first in the winter of 1949 and the last issue was #31 printed in May 1955. They were printed by Toby Press.

Just interested in anybody's comment about them, if they have any of the copies (or all), and are there're any that can be purchased either on backorder or interested party to part with them. I would be interested in any information on this.

Love to hear from anyone on this topic.

Hondo ;)

Hondo!

I know what your talking about. I had the chance to purchase one at a flea market. It was from the movie "Circus World". I didn't have the money for it, so I asked the guy to hold it. He didn't and when I returned, it was gone. Now I'm on the look out for them. I've seen a website listing them though I'm not sure if it sells them. I'll get the like when I can for you.

Hi!
the comics you're talking about are offered frequently on Ebay, but be prepared to meet quite a lot of bidders there, and those comics sell for a lot of dough.
There were comics made for of the Duke's films (Rio Bravo, Horse Soldiers, Hatari, Circus World, Katie Elder, El Dorado, War Wagon, and a couple of others), simply for advertising reasons, and not really meant as a collector's item at that time - the artwork is simply awful (still, they sell for about 50$ and more at Ebay). Then there is the Toby series with stories not related to any films, and the quality of the artwork is much higher (those can sell for 100$ and more, depending on condition and issue). In Britain they also had about 6 issues of John Wayne annuals (also frequently at Ebay, you should get one for about 20$), those books were quite good.

itdo,

Thanks for the info, I've read about it and was curious about the contents. I was not around when they came out in 1948, and knew nothing about them except from some excerts with bio's etc. Didn't really know anything about price. That's a little steep for me, as I am not a collector of comics. So, it will probably be that I will not purchase any, unless I can get them less. I am more of a collector of posters, and movies. But it can get easy to get caught up with all you collectors of many different items.

Take care, and Cheers
Hondo

Hey there Robbie,

I just missed your message, I was going to supper.

I get most of my posters from flea markets (maybe a Southern United States term), and get second hand posters, and cutouts all the time for next to nothing. Most are in excellent shape. I had a friend who is now deceased that I gave those posters to most of the time. He was a big John Wayne and Elvis fan, and collected those, so I helped him out while he was sick. I gave them away to him.

Anyway, the flea markets are the best source for just about anything and posters, drawings, paintings are great. I will be glad to look for something for you.

I don't know of any web sites for this service, but will keep my eyes open.

My friend's (who was deceased) family gave away the posters. I told them I was interested in them, but they were already gone. After they realized that I purchased them over the years, they figured that I paid about $1,800 for the bunch (including Elvis, but mostly Duke), they wanted to pay me, but I didn't accept. They were only going to pay me about $200, and I guess I was insulted at the jesture. Can you imagine that?

Right now the Coors Beer Company is displaying cutouts of Duke in Westerns, and the Military. They are really cool. I tried to inquire about getting some and they were not as of yet available (just put out last Thrusday).

Well, I just haven't collected any in a long time. Just don't have the time right now.

I do have one that was drawn before he died. I got it back in 1977 in New Orleans, by a local artist that knew Duke. I don't remember the name and I will have to look for that drawing. Of course you know that its a copy of an orginal. I'll find it and report back to you about that.

I'll keep my eyes open for you Robbie, just tell me exactly what you are looking for, and I'll see what I can do for you, but realize that this is a hit-n-miss adventure.

Hondo

Hey Robbie!

Here is the best place to get some John Wayne Posters. They have at least 77 posters to chose from and most are only $5 not including S&H. I'm not sure what you are looking for, but they might have what you want. I've seen some I would like to have. Here is the link: All Posters.com (http://www.allposters.com/gallery.asp?aid=113449) This link will take you to the John Wayne poster selection. You can choose frames & mats if you want them. The prices are pretty reasonable.

I hope this is what you are looking for. B)

That's a cool idea for the game. If one was made I'd buy to copys myself. Like you one to not open and one to play.

There were comics based on the Duke?

Yep, there sure were comics based on John Wayne. To the best of my knowledge (which is limited!), here is a list of comic books featuring John Wayne:

John Wayne Adventure Comics” (Toby Press, 31 issues, 1949 - 1955)

John Wayne Adventure Comics (British series, 82 issues from 1952 - 1958)

“John Wayne: An Unauthorized Biography” (Comic Book - don't know the publication date)

The Dell Comics “Movie Classics” series did several during the 1950’s and 60’s, including: “Hatari!”, “The Comancheros”, “The Horse Soldiers”, “The Conqueror”, “The Sons of Katie Elder”, “The War Wagon”, “El Dorado”, “Wings of Eagles”, “The Longest Day”, “The Searchers”, “Rio Bravo”, “North To Alaska”, “How The West Was Won”, & “Circus World”

Gold Key Comics did: “McLintock!”

“John Wayne, an American Hero”, Personality Comics #1, by Steven Spire, Published by Top Notch Comics: 1991

“Black Cat” comics, contains an interview with John Wayne (I don’t know the publication date)

Colt Westerns (an Australian comic book series had four John Wayne issues:
#12 John Wayne in The Vanishing Stagecoach (1963); #20 John Wayne in On the Danger Trail (1965); #21 John Wayne in Phantom Gunsmoke (1965); and #6-062 John Wayne in The Devil's Horsemen (1968)

In 1950 Oxydol / Dreft Publications Issue #4, Pocket-Sized Comics, features John Wayne

In 1942 “Reap the Wild Wind” was done as a 4 page movie comic give away

In 1939 “Stagecoach” was done by National Periodical Publications (D.C. Comics) in Issue #2, May 1939

In 1948, Tim McCoy Western Movie Stories comics did: “The John Wayne Story” (not sure which issue number), and “Red River” (Issue #16, Jan 1948)

And, in 2002, AC Comics did a tribute to John Wayne in Western Movie Heroes Comic #3 (which is still available from AC Comics. Their web address is: http://www.accomics.com/accomics/westerns/johnwayne.html)

Also, Tim Lilley's great annual magazine/book, "The Trail Beyond" usually features comic book stories reprinted from the Toby Press John Wayne comics. He has done 10 of these annuals, and from what I hear, volume 10 will be the last one.

Thanks!!
