View Full Version : General age of the fans who love Duke

You know, I am surprised to find some younger people on this and other boards who are great fans of Dukes. Some who were born after he died and still became fans. So this poll is just to see how wide a variety of ages (without having to give up the details) we have on this board. Might be interesting to see how many youngin's or senior fans are out there. (if I did this poll right, it's my first.) Let's see! dukefan1

Dukefan1,

Glad to take your poll. I also have been surprised that there have been 20 something people who enjoyed his films. Most of them were women!

My dad is a big John Wayne fan, he's the one that got me started watching the movies. I've been watching (and loveing) them for as long as I can remember.

I remember when I was younger, thinking that my uncle was just like John Wayne. He was tall and almost built like the Duke. My uncle also lives on and runs a horse farm, so he's a cowboy like John. (my faves were always his Westerns)

I am 23, and started appreciating John Wayne and his films about 5 years ago. My mom and my uncle are fans, but I didn't really know this until after I became a fan myself. Cable tv is probably what got me going on Duke's movies.

As for why I became a fan, I am not sure that I could pinpoint the reason. I am kind of old fashioned in some of my thinking, and I enjoy a lot of older movies, but that would only explain some of why I would be drawn to John Wayne. I think there was just a certain "something" about him that makes me want to watch his movies, even the not so good ones, and want to know more and more about him.

John Wayne was the most nicest man I ever known as a child and the way he looked down at me on set and said "Son I see you are my cousin and picked me up and said someday you will be a actor and be like me and then puts me back down to continue his lines". I remeber him with eyes that could scare ya and the way he talked  . I loved his movies as a kid and was glued to the tv set when I wasnt there and said to myself god he is good. The way he treated the ladys with respect :D . I was crushed when I found out right away when my cousin John Wayne was dying of cancer :( . I felt like part of me was falling and had to become something like Mr Wayne. But still yet today I only get small parts in some plays and hope to follow my dreams like John Wayne  God bless you John Wayne and I remember the words you said to me and you bet ya I will follow what you said.

Howdy,

I have been a John Wayne for as long as I can remember! When other girls had posters of guys like Shawn Cassody etc., I had posters of John Wayne on my walls!

I just recieved my 5th kidney transplant, and during all of my hard times that I had, during that time of my life when things got really bad, I would think of what John Wayne was and had gone through with his health. I love his movies, because he is such a stong person and never lets anything get him down! I am sure if I would have known him, he would have been the same way. He has always been strength for me and that is what I love about him the most!

I have always thought he was the greatest, and not bad to look at either, even when he was older!

We live in an era where Clint Eastwoods fan support is dwindling and most of his fans seem to be around his age as well whereas John Wayne is getting more and more popular atracting fans of all ages and genders the reason why just watch one of his movies.

Kanu Reeves, Di Caprio, Will Smith etc etc all nobodies who will soon be forgotten.

Amazing that so many Duke fans are younger (so far according to the vote) to not know him before he died. I just graduated from high school when Duke took to the final sunset so many years ago, and the same one we all will someday take ourselves. I was crushed by his death, and didn't realize at the time that he was 72 (he had a full life).

I guess without the internet (or even a home computer), as well as cable (yes, I know there was cable back then, but with very little stations around the country), or the information age, we didn't get as much news as we do today, so fast. Especially Duke being so sick. I do recall that we (my friends) were pulling for Duke to make his birthday, and also knew that Maureen O'Hara, Elizabeth Taylor and others were trying to get the U.S. Congress to pass a resolution to mark John Wayne a true American. The Congress passed the resolution and he received it in the hospital. Duke's comments were that he was truly honored to receive such a gift from the American people (not a direct quote). He died days later. I was 18 at the time and became an authentic Duke fan since.

I will say that he has made an impact in my life with his movies, and personal life. I am amazed that he is still very popular today; no, I take that back, I am not surprise that he is. He is what makes America great, and he does that with his movies and his actions. Duke is a role model to all; young and old; men, and women; boys and girls. Even if you are not a fan, you can't help know that Duke was a very authentic man. I'm not surprise that there are people around the world who also liked Duke. He paints a true picture of what America is.

It's our job (us Americans) to continue what Duke left behind. We are to continue to show everyone around the world what America is and what we stand for. Thanks Duke for your legacy.

P.S. Hey Bill, Wish you could have a legacy like that?

Well you all have to remember that not many *older* people use the internet, to this day it is still a haven for the young.
I myself am 21, born after the Duke left, but I'd have to say if I could have a drink with any man in history, it would be him.

Your right about one thing more younger people will be on the web than older people but I feel that this is inconclusive when dealing with the age groups of people who like the Duke. I have found out that people from all ages like him, his films are loved by nearly everyone I know theres not a single other actor from any era who can command such a large number of fans especially 24 years after their death.

Well, since there is only one vote per user name, I can only register my own age (55), but in my household, my wife falls into the 41 to 50 range and my youngest son is below the range, at age seven (our family is much larger, but the three of us are the bona fide John Wayne fans). We didn't necessarily want to add more user names just to vote, so thought we'd add to the statistics through a post.

Well, my wife is a few years older than me (she's in the next age group :D ) but she's a huge John Wayne fan too. Must be one of the reasons we get along so well. My son who is now 12 is just getting introduced to Duke through a few of the movies we have, and my 4 year old daughter likes the movies 'cause of the horsies. Run in the blood. First Wayne movie I saw when I was about 10 or so was Rio Lobo on the late show. Saw The Shootist in the theater with my mom. cried at that one.

My folks are Wayne fans too, but they grew up in the Roy Rogers era. Matter of fact, they just got back from the Roy Rogers Museum down on Branson. Can't wait to see the pics mom got.

Does anyone play the movie line game here?

Hi.
I'm a new registrant on the board, though a Wayne fan of some fifty years standing. I revered the Duke - though he wasn't aware of it, I "adopted" him as the father I never had (my parents were divorced when I was four or five years old) because his screen persona represented everything a boy wants a father to be, i.e., strength, dignity, courage and integrity.

As everyone knows, Big John was also very patriotic and that too is a trait to be admired.

I remember standing in a box office line to see the film "True Grit" (one of my favorite films of all time). I was amazed and rather amused to see that standing in that line with me were not only gray-headed oldsters (John's "base" fans), but also long-haired hippies, kids of all ages and everthing in between. The Duke's appeal was timeless; he appealed to everybody.

Hi all

I was having a converstion with a 16 year old about movies and we got into discussing about 'The Great Escape' he said although the movie was good he would not watch it because it was old. I was amazed by this responce bull all of a sudden another boy aged 17 stated that he agreed the only old movies he would watch were John Waynes, I thought he was joking but he wasnt he then went on the say how much he loved John Waynes and his movies. At university last year we had a John Wayne night before we went out to a party we only got time to watch 'Rio Lobo' but it was well received even with females. One gentleman scoffed at Duke but he was a Clint fan we claimed that it was his age (21) and that older people prefer Clint. We were all 19-20, a load of my friends around the age of 18-22 would lend me Dukes movies or telephone me and others if his movies were on TV. In the year 1999 at high school we studied the 'Green Berets' and 'Born on the 4th of July' what a cool assignment to get as a student we also got to watch 'The Longest Day'. Well thats all I can say about people I have met that would be in my generation. Of course people will scoff and say these stories are lies but to them I would say come on over and see for yourself.

It's amazing how I watch a John Wayne movie, and the young folks (age 13- 17 years) would watch it, and like it a lot. When they ask me what movie it was and who starred in it. I would tell them, "Rio Bravo", "The Searchers" or something like that, and starring John Wayne. They would be shocked! I thought he was bad or something. I like this movie. I hooked them. They would discover a new concept.

Duke gets no respect from their parents. You figure.

Thanks for the welcoming messages, folks.

Actually, I've been a fan of the Duke's even longer than fifty years. I'm 66 (born January 1938) and have been avidly watching Big John's movies since the Forties. In fact, some of my favorite Wayne films date from the Forties; "Shepherd of the Hills", "Reap the Wild Wind", "Flying Tigers", "Fighting Seabees", "Pittsburgh", "They Were Expendable", "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon", "Three Godfathers", "Fort Apache", etc.

I think I probably absorbed my devotion to the Duke from my Mom, who was also a big Wayne fan. I remember a humorous incident concerning my Mom and step-dad that occurred sometime in the late Forties or early Fifties. We had been to a drive-in to see one of the Duke's movies (might have been "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon"). On the way home, my Mom kept gushing about John and my step-dad, perhaps jealous, said, "Oh, I wish you had John Wayne stuck up your rear". My Mom, giving a little giggle and mischievously bouncing on the car seat, said, "Oh, me too".

Stumpy,

What a riot! That's just a gem. I laughed when I read that line. That has to be the best way to see a John Wayne classic at the drive-in. I saw only a couple, since I am in my forties and was a little lad when the drive-ins were fading out into the sunset, so to speak. But I always loved the westerns and Duke was one of them of course. I think the last movie I saw at the drive-in was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I saw True Grit at the walk-in.

Stumpy welcome to the board, and thanks for the classic story of your family's experience to the great American drive-in. Look forward to many more stories of your Duke classics.

Steve,

A big welcome to the John Wayne Message Board! We're always happy to have another Duke fan join the ranks.

I can certainly relate to your warm feelings regarding having a child who loves John Wayne. I have an almost 8 year old who has been a cowboy always. When he was three, he would march around with his cowboy hat (an old Stetson I got at an auction) and announce, "I a cowboy! I John Wayne!" We still enjoy watching the Duke's movies together, and does he have a sharp eye. He recognizes actors from other movies with an almost uncanny accuracy.

Get your wife to join in on the fun here. My wife and I have a great time reading and posting together.

Don't be a stranger!!

"I see you are my cousin." That's worse than some of the dialogue in The Conqueror!!!

I'm happy to see that we of the 31-40 age group are the majority in the poll so far (20 votes currently), and I think this may have something to do with the fact that many of us, whose grandfathers are WWII veterans--think of our grandfathers as having a John Wayne-like persona. My grandfather, who is 80, grew up in the South during the Great Depression and served in the US Navy during WWII. He experienced hardship and held many of the independent, individualistic values that the Duke believed in. There's a line in McClintock when Wayne's character says: "The government never gave anyone anything!" and from The Undefeated: "Well, I sure ain't gonna give 'em to the army!" (referring to horses). Whenever I hear those lines, I immediately think of my grandfather talking. It's right out of something he would say! Anyone else from the 31-40 age bracket have these same thoughts?

I'd like to welcome you on this board; the greatest for a great American. I will agree with you about the younger generation being on the internet more than us old ones over 40, but I want to remind you that Duke died over 25 years ago, and if you have a following of fans under 30 or 35, then you must admit that he has an influence on our youth today. That is encouraging in my book and I want to encourage the youth to see what a great American is. We don't seem to have many out there today.

Thanks for the post and looking forward to more.

ethanedwards,

We would like to add our welcome to those you have already received. We've really enjoyed your posts so far, and look forward to hearing more from you.

We were wondering, where is Torquay in relation to Portsmouth? As you may have noticed already, one of our moderators, arthurarnell, is from Portsmouth, England. We have several other members from the UK, and from around the world - truly a world-wide community of Duke lovers!

As for the Mrs. and myself, we are of the "more mature" variety. Some of our members are older than spit (that's not quite as old as dirt  ). But you are quite right when you point out that there are many younger folks coming to know the Duke as we have come to know him (thanks to cable and satellite TV, and those John Wayne movie marathons).

Again - WELCOME!

opportunity of thanking, both of you, and Arthur, in Portsmouth, for your welcomes.
I've enjoyed browsing the site, and can only hope, that any contributions, that I make, will be as enjoyable.
Torquay, as Arthur knows, is on the same coast as Portsmouth, but a little further, south-west, 3-4 hours away.
I agree, it is fantastic, that the younger ones, are keeping the memory of the Duke
alive, my children, being amongst them.

Well I'm 39, be 40 in September. Watching John Wayne war movies with my dad got me on the road to be a John Wayne fan but my mom really helped me become a big John Wayne fan, when I was around 10 or so when ever there was a John Wayne movie on TV she would let me break out my mess kit and eat dinner out of it and being a good mom she would usually fix chili or something like that for me to eat. It’s great to have found a place to share my love of the Duke…

It's the broccoli, smokey, it's the broccoli! Once I stopped eating broccoli, we haven't had any more kids. :D

The sad thing is, I love broccoli and I love kids, especially with mayonnaise (the broccoli, not the kids  ).

Then I heard an official report that broccoli helps retain memory and perhaps helps to avoid Alzheimers disease (which seems to run rampant in my family). So I have this big dilemma - retaining my memory and knowing who my wife and kids are into my golden, olden years . . . or having more kids than the old woman in the shoe, but not knowing who they are :D . But wait - if I eat more broccoli, we might have more kids, but I WILL know who they are :headbonk: .

Hm-m-m-m-m, what time does the farmer's market open this morning? And where's the mayonnaise?

Yes, that would be a great moment. To sit down a share a bottle of Wild Turkey with John .
My son who is 14 is also a Duke fan and I realy feel his love for the Duke and his strong faith in God and our Country has helped him make good choices, he just completed his Eagle Scout project.
I am very proud of him, and of corse Mom and I have had some infulence.
We both attend 1800 period events whenever we can and with out being conscious of it as we buy our period clothing (River Junction Trade Co in McGregor Iowa) we look in the mirror and there is old Duke and young Hondo.

If you are ever in north eastern Iowa please check out the River Junction Trade Company on main street McGregor. It is like taking a step back in time. My son and I head up there whenever we can just to hang out. They have several cowboy events every year and yes you can wear your iron. In fact they are building a western town
and planing five to six events a year.
http://www.riverjunction.com/

Roy Rogers was my first hero then the Duke, I felt that "real cowboys" should not run around with a gutiar. However I still have a great deal of respect for "Roy".

As for me I will never put my six guns down!

olered,

Howdy, and a big welcome to the John Wayne Message Board!

That was a funny story you shared. I can imagine all the excitement amongst the sailors, having been one myself, thinking they were going to be in a John Wayne movie. The closest I got to stardom in the Navy was that Bob Hope's son was one of my shipmates, and took a karate class with me in Sasebo, Japan.

I'm curious about your attached picture. Is there a web site that has that? I am assuming there is. Please tell us more about it. My dad was a WWII Navy veteran, and I think would be neat to put his picture there, too. BTW, are your mom and dad still alive?

Well, we hope you decide to stay around and keep us company!

I just joined, so hello to everyone. I have been a fan of the Duke's since I was a very small child. My late father was a huge fan and many afternoons we would watch his films on AMC or on videotape. He loved Chisum the best of all of Duke's films. I read your survey on favorite John Wayne movies, and I would have to agree it is very hard to pick just one. I must mention one of my personal favorites: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. I love this movie because Duke's character is conflicted and must decide to do the right thing and lose his girl, or do the wrong thing and keep her. I teach first year college students, and I used this film to create dialogue dealing with ethics. I also love Jimmy Stewart, and of course Lee Marvin is just wonderful in this film. Well that's all for now. Keep up the great discussions!!!! :) :

I am 32 (male). I have been on the internet since the early 90's, over 10 years. There are millions of websites around the world. But NONE has ever impressed or impacted me like this one. I cannot think of a better use for web space than a tribute to the Duke.
I always wondered about the details of John Wayne's death. Tonight I watched In Harm's Way, then The Shootist. The latter is a hard movie for me to watch. So, I got online and googled the Duke to see what comes up and ended up here. I have been here and at http://wyntoontrip.com/ reading for the last 6 (yes SIX) hours. It is after 1 am, and I need to go to bed.
I have been a John Wayne fan most of my life. Unfortunately, I don't know a single person my age that is also a hard core Duke fan. Correction, didn't until I found this place.
I never knew there was a book by his sweetheart. I never knew there is/is going to be? a John Wayne museum.

Chilibill, you made http://wyntoontrip.com/? After all these years I finally got the details of the Duke's final days I have wondered about most of my life. I cried. A great man was lost. If I am not mistaken and you did all that work, great job. I saved the information. Very impressive.
To anyone that has anything to do with these 2 sites, THANK YOU.
I will be sticking around here. I have alot of reading to do.
Question, are there any 800x600 desktop themes of the Duke? If so WHERE!?
Hope to meet you all. The Duke lives on, through his fans.

but then again maybe i should stay stum and live at the age i polled at for some more time lol

:o WOW, I am surprised to see that the largest demografic from the poll is the 30-40 year old range. While i am at the very far upper end of that group for another 7 weeks or less, i never saw a Duke movie on the big screen. My log in name explains part of why i always have and always will be a Duke fanatic not just a fan. You see my greandfather looked just like DUKE, he was about 6'3" and bought me my first horse for my 3rd birthday. For the 1st month he would ride with me, the next month he would lead me with a rope following his horse. The first Saturday of December 1969 we went out for our Saturday ride. I can remember it like it was yesterday. We always started just after dawn and it was very cold. he would saddle my horse for me until i got big enough to do it myself about age 7 or 8 i guess. Well he helped me up onto my horse, a pinto just like Little Joe's from Bonanza " as i had begged for. I got all situated with the riens in my gloves and fett settled in the sturrips, it was the i noticed he had not attached the lead rope to his horse from PINTO'S HALTER. I asked him where it was and he simply replied "You don't need it anymore" The rest is now history. I rode with him for the next 20 years. We would go to Kings Moutain National park and ride the marked and unmarked trail every spring and fall with a riding club from my home town. He had worked there during the depression era in the CCC'S as part of FDR'S alphabet soup projects. My 2pa had his 1st major heart attack and was in ICU after being shocked 7 times to revive him at the same time THE DUKE was in his last days. In fact THE DUKE went clear while he was still in the hospital. I was 12 1/2 and it hit me like a ton of bricks. As my list of people or hero's in order of importance were and still are Jesus first and foremost, then 2pa then, THE DUKE, Dale Sr. i could go on but that is enough for you to get the picture. Fortunately 2pa held on and lived until 91. I haven't ridden a horse or been hunting since, i have tried but jsut don't have the heart.

I'm twenty five right now and think very highly of the Duke. He died a year before I was born and I think that really sucks, but like it has been said, he really had a long full life. One of my other favourite people in the world is another aging cowboy (now deceased unfortunately) Johnny Cash. I see parallels betwen the two (besides their first names0

I am not sure about the fact that older people do not use the internet, My mother used the internet regularly for the last 8-10 years of her life. She died last year at the age of 65 years old. Most of her friends, her age, all use the internet quite a bit.
Anyway, I got off on a tangent. I have been a Duke fan since I was, well I can not remember not seeing his movies. I have become progressively more and more a Duke fan as I have aged. I am now 35 years old and I am an avid fan. My daughter who is 4 years old can not tell you the name of any other actor in the world, but she can and will give you the name of John Wayne, she can point him out whether it is in Angel and the Badman, The Quiet man, Donovan's Reef, Hatari, The Searchers, The Cowboys, El Dorado, and her all time favorite.. Big Jake.. well McClintock is right up there.. the three that she loves the most.. Big Jake, McClintock and Hatari.. she will watch them over and over. We are on our 2nd copy of both hatari and big jake because she has watched them so very many times. My daughter is 4 years old.. and I really did not influence this, she has a tv in her room with only certain channels set to be on.. discovery, animal planet, lpb, amc, tmc, western channel, and assorted kids channels.. and she tends to watch and has been drawn to John Wayne over and over again. Since she was just a baby. She was hurt seriously a year or so ago and when she was kicked in the face by a horse.. as we have horses, and she did not cry, she told the paramedic that Jake McCandles would not have wanted little jake to cry, so she was not going to cry.. mind you, she had a shattered nose, severely broken right eye orbit.. she never cried, when they asked her at the hospital, same response. When she had the 2nd surgery just a few months ago, she watched 3 movies over and over again before and after surgery.. at the hospital etc.. big jake, hatari and eight below..

I think there are many qualities that make John Wayne movies appealing and make him appealing. His movies are larger than life, flawed characters that are not necessarily perfect by any means that overcome and show that inner strength. His personal life was not what stars of today are.. he had a strong family life. He stood for something. He tried did not tru to be thousands of things, but instead tried to stand for certain things and did a brilliant job of it.

I am new to this wonderful site of memories for John Wayne!

I always watched John Wayne during my early years - my friends were into the David Cassidy and Donny Osmond - but, I would watch the DUKE!

He was cool and an All American before it was fashionable.

I always admired his strong stance on patriotism and loyality. He is a true hero to me. I miss his strength and his smile. I think of his courage he showed during his later years when he was very sick, but he kept on plugging and smiling. I am so amazed that right after his lung was removed he went back to acting a few months later! I pray I can only be as strong when I have my surgery in three weeks. I do think in my mind (as the doctor is pushing those needles in me and the recovery afterwards) of John Wayne and his famous quote that I've seen on this site: "COURAGE is being scared to death - and saddling up anyway!" and I believe that to be my strength when I "hear" his voice saying that in my ear and mind.

John Wayne was true to himself and true to others. I feel his movies showed him as himself. I can not describe this to others who do not understand what he stood for and how important he was to America. I wish he was here now. I bet there'd be no "terror" in the world if Duke was still in the saddle! :D

God Bless John Wayne!

Hello All,
I first saw a JW film with m father when he came back from Burma after WW2. He came back in 1947 and I can remember him taking me to a local cinema to see "Stagecoach". He was a great fan of JW and his enthusiasm rubbed off on me and now it has continued with my daughter. I am currently 66 years old and my daughter is 41. My grandson also enjoys JW films and his favourite is "Angel and the Badman". He is 9 years old, so as you can see our family covers a broad spectrum. I enjoyed reading the comments. Hope to write again soon.

I just turned 39 the 6th of September, but I have been a JW fan since I was about 7. Check this out, My oldest son Zach, who's 8, is also a huge fan as well, but what is really cool is that he shares the same birthdate as the Duke , May 26th. He is always quick to add that his b-day is the same as John Wayne's when ever he is asked what his b-day is. :D

I for one love the results of this poll. It shows that people are finally looking for something solid and true. Holy cow, in this day and age how nice it would be if more people emulated Duke Wayne over the Brittany Spears of the worlds. Not to mention our politicians. Our youth aren't that bad, they're just starving for leadership. Great poll.

Im almost 33(in about 2 weeks) and i love to watch a good jw film no matter weather it's a western film or a war film of just whatever. It started for me after i got married and had kids. I don't really know the reason why i enjoy his films so much, I think for me it's because he just seems to be all american, and as a member of the military i have to respect that alot.
Have a good night everyone.

I am 26, John Wayne was a childhood idle of my parents generation. They watched them so, so did we. I believe that this is why those of us born after his death still came to admire him. I had been watching him for several years as a very young kid before I even knew that he was no longer alive. I remember driving my dad nuts when we rented videos on very rare occasions, I had to have a John Wayne movie. I grew up watching the Lone Ranger to though I admit now the Lone Ranger is alittle much for me. I would still rather watch a old movie (40's-70's) than a new one.

John stood tall for what he believed in and let you know up front where he stood. Did not start a fight but didn't back down either. Man's man and treated the ladies even the saloon girls like ladies. Didn't have to use cuss words to get his point across either. Clean, direct and loyal to his friends, we can all learn from that in this day and age.
