I went to the dedication of Harry & Olive Carey's Ranch in Santa Clarita today. Harry Carey Jr & his sister Cappy were there. What a gentlemen & story teller Mr. Carey is. While he told great stories of John Wayne, Gary Cooper, John Ford to the crowd and how much the Ranch met to his Father & Mother, brought tears to the eye including his sister Cappy while she listened.

Many high profile people were there. It is now a Histrorical Landmark. That is open to the public. His father bought the land in 1918, built the first house there in 1920. Folks that's nearly a hundred years ago. What a day!!!

I got a nice e-mail from Harry Carey Jr. a while back. On his website, it had an e-mail...so not knowing any better, I just e-mailed him my best wishes, and he sent a nice reply.

I've had the great pleasure of corresponding with Harry,
on various occasions, and treasure, his autographed book and letters.
Only recently, I mailed him on his birthday.
He was delighted, that I should remember,
and he was so very kind, to find the time,
to mail me back, and thank me!

The reason, he corresponded with me,
because I wrote, and sent this tribute to him,
as a celebration for 2000.

HARRY CAREY

When I was ROLLING HOME, along THE LONG GRAY LINE
persued by THE SEARCHERS,THE LONG RIDER, THE RAIDERS
and the 3 GODFATHERS,I came to the RIVERS EDGE, of the RIO GRANDE,
where there was a wonderful MOONRISE.

I came across,SOME SWEETHEARTS ON PARADE,who are an
ENDANGERED SPECIES, and as GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES
I said KISS THEM FOR ME, but don't make
it a PUBLIC AFFAIR

I've had some WILD TIMES, as THE OUTCAST, FROM HELL TO TEXAS
but still remaiin THE UNDEFEATED,from SHENANDOAH
to TOMBSTONE!

To conclude, I remain ILLEGALLY YOURS,
from this CHEYENNE AUTUMN, I wish you SOMETHING BIG,
in CHEERY 2000

I do hope Harry gets better, and I wish him
speedy recovery!!

Best Wishes,
Keith

Very nicely done Ethan. I like how you incorporated the films he was in into the poem.

Went to the Harry Carey Ranch and met Harry Jr. he graciously autographed my 1892 EMF Hartford octagon barrel lever action 45.They have turned the ranch into a museum now.The family that owns Farmer John Products owns it now and had alot to do with making it happen.Make sure ya buy Farmer John products, this was a cool thing they did restoring it and making it a museum, write them and say thank you.Actually got offered a job to be a docent, but i live two hours away.It is right around the Magic Mountain area.It is a very cool old adobe ranch just like you think it would look.Got to see where John Wayne,John Ford, the Carey's and other stars got to hang out and knock down a few.I was very honored to be there.Got Harry Carey Jr. on one side of my stock and "Dobe" on the other side(nickname from his dad). Will post some pics if i can figure out how...AWASTEY'KOLA

gunclick rick,

I know we welcomed you to the board way back when, but we'd like to welcome you back after a long absence, and say that it's good to see you back!

Thanks for letting us know about your visit with Harry Carey Jr. I bet that must have been real exciting! Is there a web site we can visit? Being that we live in California, maybe we could visit there sometime.

So where abouts in California you do you live? We are in the Monterey Bay area.

gunclick rick,

How exciting, especially for a Duke fan. He would be someone a person would want to sit down and talk to as long as he would let you. Even though I read his book Comany of Heroes, I'll bet he has more stories he could tell. I have got to get out the west to some of these neat places. This is one that will be on my list to see. Looking foward to your pics. Welcome back to the board, don't be a stranger.

I believe if you go to Mr.Carey's website you can order an autographed copy.Yes it was way nice.He gave a speech about living on the ranch and growing up there. He said when his dad sold it and drove off the property he aged 10 years immediatley becuase he loved the place so much.Thier horses are still buried there.I got to meet his wife who's dad was Paul Fix,and his sister,Cappy. She told me she used to follow John Wayne around when she was younger, she was a cool lady. The latest copy of Shoot magazine has Harry Jr. on the front and Cowboy and Indian Mag has John Wayne, both excellent for framing. The editor of Shoot presented Harry with a very nicely tooled leather belt and holster along with a shiny fully engraved colt 45 with ivory handles. It shore were purty!I live in Visalia,Ca.home of the End of the Trail statue. If some one will send me an e-mail i will send pics back and you can post them here.It would take me too long to figger it out.Missing Ivan Jesse Curtis at Christmas this year for sure...curly54@sbcglobal.net

Recently, I uploaded some pictures to the gallery that gunclick rick had sent to me, for posting on this board.

Check HERE (http://www.dukewayne.com/index.php?act=gal&code=00&cat=4) to see them. The three pictures that are credited to me, but obviously have to do with Harry Carey Jr (see the titles) are the ones that Rick took while at the dedication of the ranch.

Hi all

Chester, Thank you for posting those
photos, they are great. Harry Carey Jr
must be one of the last living links to
that golden age of John Wayne John Ford
and Ward Bond. I've just ordered his book
from his web site, and look forward to reading it

Emmanuel.

Hello All
Chester and Mrs C, I sure like your neck of the woods. I am a bit of a Steinbeck fan and that with my tropical fish interests took me to your town. In 1987 I came with my wife and my parents and our oldest ( who was a newborn then) to see the Monterey Aquarium and to check out Cannery row etc. I returned with my wife and all four kids in 2001 and we saw the Aquarium again. Later that fall the terrorists struck in New York and we have not been down since although I do miss it. The reason for not travelling south has less to do with Sept 11 and more to do with the age of our parents and a desire to spend holidays with them while they are still with us.
I was wondering if anyone thinks that an invitation to Harry Carey Jr to attend the monument Valley rendezvous would be appropriate. seems like he is friendly and open to communication. I could anticipate that a cup of java with him around a fire could be a memorable event. hope all is well murray

Dear Mr. Carey,

My wife and I are moderators on the John Wayne Message Board at http://www.dukewayne.com. As fans of Duke, we have come to know your work as well. We look forward to the release of Comanche Stallion!

Our reason for writing today is to let you know about an intended gathering in Monument Valley next year, to commemorate the 100 anniversary of John Wayne's birth. Although we realize he was born on May 26, most likely our gathering will take place in September or October, as that time of year seemed to work best for the largest number of people.

We were wondering about the possibility of you joining us for this event. If all goes as expected, there will be a man in attendance, William Brooks (known as Chilibill on the message board) who was an extra in some of John Wayne's movies in the late 40s, in addition to the rest of us fans. We are expecting folks from around the US, Canada, and even some from overseas (Ireland and Russia, so far). We would all consider it a huge honor if you were able to attend with us.

Wishing you the best,

Chester

Dear Chester: We would really love to come once again to Monument Valley, but I'm sorry to say that I have made my last visit to that magical place. It's just too hard to get around these days. I miss going to the film festivals and visiting with my old buddies. As to Comanche Stallion. We had to give up on the preject. I think we were a couple of years too soon with it. Now, Westerns seems to be making a small return to the screen, but at the time, the folks with the money didn't seem to think they were money-makers. So be it. Thanks for the invitation, Harry

So there you have it. Well, at least we know.

Hi Chester and Mrs C

As least Mr Carey was kind enough to respond
to your e-mail. I'm sure he must get requests
from many people every day. It would have
been something to have had him there with us.
but somehow I think we'll have a wonderful time
just the same. Thank you both for trying.

Emmanuel.
