This is a fun group of people. Here's one that will get plenty discussion.

Who do you think is the best co-star (male or female) to work with Duke in movies. Let's go with major co-star with Duke and not the supporting players.

I'll start and say that the chemistry with Dean Martin in Rio Bravo and Sons of Katie Elder was the best. They work so well with each other on screen (the topic), and were good friends off screen (which has nothing to do with this post). Can't think of anyone better than Duke (other than the Martin/Lewis team) that has worked better with Dino.

Love to hear your responses.

Of the men, one of my favorite pairings is the Duke with Gabby Hayes. What a grumpy old cuss Gabby was  , and John Wayne always had a smile on his face :) , finding the humor in Gabby's grumpiness.

Naturally, for the female, how could anyone even come close to the Duke and Maureen O'Hara? I know that's been discussed before in another thread, so I won't go into detail here. Suffice it to say, she and the Duke were great together.

Cheers,

Chester

I have to agree 100% about Maureen O'Hara. There's never been another pairing like them.
As far as male co-stars, I really like the Duke and Victor McLaughlin. He was always excellent in whatever role he was playing.

Yep!

Maureen O' Hara most defininatly! I wish they would have been in more movies together, they had that chemistry that is hard to come by!

I also agree with Dean Martin! Rio Bravo is one of my favorite movies, and it really seems to work between them! I had heard once, that Dean Martin concidered that movie to be one of his favorites, and one of a few he was most proud of! I would have also, liked to have seen them in more westerns together, they did a good job!

I can't off hand think of anyone that he worked with coming across bad on the screen.
Even with Widmarks constant B*ITCHING, or Harvey calling him "Dukie".
Looking at those whowere known to have different views than Duke, came out ''normal".
The guy must have been able to act huh?

I agree with JWfan. Ben Johnson and Duke played well together. I have to give Jimmy Stewart a thumbs up. Loved the way they acted together in both LV and The Shootist. If they had done more together, he would have been first on my list. dukefan1

Ok, I always come in from the left field on these, but I really like Red Buttons & Wayne in Hatari!.
Lee Marvin seemed to do very well paired with Wayne in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. I like how they were at each other with James Stewart caught in the middle. Thats how is should have been in The Commancheros.

For female, there is three:
Gail Russel in Angel and the Badman (never underestimate the power of a woman!) :o
Capucine in North to Alaska (she looks like she could go toe to toe with Wayne anytime, and might get the best of him) <_<
Patricia Neal in any of the movies she's in with him (you ever notice she NEVER puts up with his attitude?) ;)

Here is another post from the past. I loved all the films that Ward Bond was a side kick in but the person that stuck out the most to me was Dean Martin. Especially in Rio Bravo. It was a great role for him which I am sure made it easier to cast him alongside Duke again in The Son's of Katie Elder.

Like the previous posters I would mention Maureen O Hara, Ben Johnston and Walter Brennan

I also thought there was good chemistry between Jack Elam and the Duke in Rio Lobo

On the villian side Lee Marvin and John Wayne played off well against each other

For female I like Claire Trevor, that screen in Dark Command when JW says he wants to marry her and she starts looking around and says "surely they don't let you out alone?" man I love that line and she delivered it well.

For Male I like Dean Martin & Henry Fonda ...

Of course, all of those mentioned previously, especially Maureen. But one I think gets overlooked is Jack Kruschen as Jake Birnbaum in "McLintock." His banter with Duke in that movie is treasurable. It's a shame he didn't get to do any more movies with JW.
Cheers - Jay :D

I thought William Holden paired really well with Duke in 'The Horse Soldiers', and also Robert Ryan with him in 'Flying Leathernecks'.
