arthurarnell December 11th, 2005, 03:35 AM Hi Keith
Interesting topic and one that will need some research if they are to be answered in a manner that will do any sort of justice to your question.
However a very quick answer (and slightly flippant), you list fifteen questions. I think the answer to your fifteenth question is the previous fourteen questions combined because if you can answer these fourteen the fifteenth is automatically answered as every one of those goes to make up the man.
I will go away and ponder.
Regards
Arthur
you have provided the skeleton, all we have to do is put the flesh on.
ethanedwards December 11th, 2005, 03:45 AM Hi Arthur,
Thanks for your comments, and that will give you something to do
instead of worrying about Harry Rednapp!!!
However, if you notice, the fifteenth, so called question,
isn't a question at all!! but meant as a statement!
You quite rightly point out,
if the the 14 questions are answered, then that statement,
speaks for itself!
Best Wishes,
Keith
arthurarnell December 11th, 2005, 04:22 AM Hi Keith
As to what kind of man John Wayne was my first thought would be Impulsive.
There used to be a question if you were drowning in a lake who would you like to rescue you John Wayne or Dustin Hoffman. The obvious answer would be the Duke because he wouldn't hesitate - he wouldn't think about the consequences just get on with it. Hoffman would spend some time working out his motivation.
By impulsive I don't mean exactly headstrong although I think there might have been a touch of that in his make up Determined certainly he knew what he wanted and he would go get it as shown by his pursuit of the Alamo.
Its already established that he was generous man, it has been established that you didn't want him as an enemy although he quickly forgave if he was wrong, a trait he didn't pick up from John Ford.
Regards
Arthur
chester7777 December 11th, 2005, 09:55 AM Under hobbies, I think his biggest hobby was his work. I think while he may have needed to work, he really enjoyed it more than most people enjoy their hobbies. Naturally, he was also a firearms collector, and a collector of Indian dolls.
I think the best way to determine what kind of man he was is to read the writings of those who were closest to him, like family and friends. Daughter Aissa wrote a book about, from her perspective as his child, and of course Maureen O'Hara has written about the Duke. I'm sure there are other perspectives as well (Pat Stacy comes to mind - she certainly was close to him in his final years).
As Arthur stated, John Wayne's generosity was almost a fault, but who can fault that?
He was very devoted to his fan base, signing autographs and treating fans very well, because he knew that was the source of his legendary status.
Just a few thoughts . . . I'm sure I'll chime in with more . . . .

ethanedwards December 11th, 2005, 12:37 PM Hi,
In The Official JOHN WAYNE Reference Book ,
It also states the some of Duke's hobbies, were
Playing chess, bridge, poker and going on deep fishing cruises?
and that amongst other things he collected walking canes, comic books,
Kachina Western dolls and cowboy outfits.
Hi favourite singer was Frank Siantra, and that his favourite
Country singer, was Charley Pride.
I am sure his favourite comedienne, was no doubt Lucille Ball.
His first movie hero was Douglas Fairbanks Jnr.
Does anyone know in later years, what were his favourite stars?
I know he liked Clint Eastwood, and considered him his successor.
His favourite crime show was Hawaii 50
He liked Camel Cigarettes and
I am sure Bill, will check this one out,
that his favourite drink was Commemorativo Tequila, with Lemon!

stall 956 December 11th, 2005, 02:11 PM I met Mr. Wayne in 1974 in front of his home in Bay Shores, Newport Beach.
I can say he was a man of his word.
For he loved his fans, know matter what they were.
In my case. A hippie with long hair to my shoulders driving a Yellow VW Van.
Did he ask me why I was on private property or attack me. NO!!
When I stuck out my hand to shake his. He give it gladly (and strongly).
He gave me 15 minutes of his time, no questions asked.
In my book a true hero, a man with class and integrity.
ethanedwards December 11th, 2005, 05:18 PM Hi stall 956,
Great memory, and thanks for posting it!!
A man of his word,a man of class and a man of integrity.
I guess, that's why we're all still here!!

William T Brooks December 11th, 2005, 07:08 PM Keith,
You got it very close.
He loved to play cards, and his boat The Wild Goose. :D
He had almost the best collection of Hopi Kachina Dolls in the U.S., Sen. Barry Goldwater had the best, and is on display at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff Arizona.
Duke also had one of the only Water-Mellon Kachina Dolls other than Sen. Barry Goldwater in the World, remember these were Not Hopi but White Men!!! :D Goldwater was a Great Supporter of the Hopi Tribe in Arizona. Sen. Barry Goldwater was one of Duke's Best Friends. :)
The Hopi Tribe had helped Duke and Ford on one of their Films in Monument Valley and because the Water-Mellon is a Big Thing to Hopi, Duke had sent The Hopi Tribe a Truck Load Of Water-Mellons, so they gave him one of their only Water-Mellon Kachina. Not bad for a White Man!!!
I did know that he liked Charley Pride very much. :D
Yes he did love Love Lucille Ball, But he also Liked Bob Hope Very Much.
He had Patterned his Western film life after Harry Carey Sr. :cowboy:
You are right He liked Camel Cigarettes, and smoked 4 to 5 Packs a day.
And Yes his Favorite Drink was Sausa Commemorativo Tequila, and in the 1960s and 1970s was $28.00 a bottle!!! :fear2:
Duke was always a Gentle Man, and The Woman loved Him, and so did the Men!
Duke worked Very Hard, and Played just as Hard!!! :jump:

Well, there certainly hasn't been much inflation in the tequila market. I'm pretty sure the last bottle of Sauza Commemorative Tequila I bought this year was in the $28 range.

ethanedwards December 13th, 2005, 04:02 AM Hi Chester,
I was only saying that last week,
not in relation to Tequila, but you're right, it does seem
there's no inflation, in take-away prices of alcohol.
In pubs, bars and restaurants, the price has rocketed,
but in my supermarket,I am now paying less for a bottle of whisky,
than I was 10 years ago!!!

Senta December 13th, 2005, 07:44 AM Hi all,
It is great that that thread appers. I have read Pat Stacy and Alissa Wayne books but they didn't help me much to imagine Duke as a person. I'm really want to know him better.
And I like that Arthur's comment about drowning in the lake.

InHarmsWay December 14th, 2005, 06:00 PM I was curious, does anyone know what the duke's thoughts were on homosexuality?
-IHW
ethanedwards December 14th, 2005, 06:10 PM Hi InHarmsWay,
In her autobiography, Pilar Wayne asked Duke,
during the making of THE UNDEFEATED
what he thought of Rock Hudson's homosexuality.
Dukes reply was straightforward,
"What Rock does in the privacy of his own room,is his own business, I don't care what they say; I think Rock's a hell of a guy"
Aissa Wayne, in her book,
JOHN WAYNE- My Father
wrote,
"On the set of THE UNDEFEATED ,
I stood with my Dad, watching Hudson perform a scene.
"Look at that face" 'my father said admiringly. without turning to look at me'
"What a waste of a face, on a queer. You know what I coulda done,
with that face?"
Aissa, went on to say,
'Crude or not, this was Boy Talk, a party, ,I'd never been privy to'

arthurarnell December 15th, 2005, 01:12 AM Hi
Many years ago I read that while in Mexico he was given a room numbered Q4 (I think) and insisted that he be allocated another roomas that is the Mexican symbol for Homosexuality.
Of course there is the unfortunate picture of him in sneakers and tight little shorts which I believe holds him in some circles as a gay icon whatever that means.

ethanedwards December 15th, 2005, 06:18 AM Hi Vera,
No!
The picture Arthur is referring to, is of Duke.!
The photograph I have, shows him standing back on one leg,
smoking, with a bag on his shoulder, a white stetson hat,
soft, open shoes
and very tight white, blue checked shorts,
which were very tight indeed, and for those days, quite revealing!!
In fact, as the caption says,
HOLLYWOOD OFF DUTY
Marion Morrison, aka John Wayne, off guard.
I personally, don't think it is the image,
that Duke would have wanted to have portrayed!
Best Wishes,
Keith

ethanedwards December 15th, 2005, 02:18 PM Hi Vera,
I'm not sure exactly, when it was published, probably

The copy I have, was on the front cover of a,

InHarmsWay December 22nd, 2005, 10:25 PM The thread escapes me now, however when talking about Dukes "Baldness" I knew i noticed it before, but if anyone has ever seen The Dance by Garth Brooks ( a very touching and moving song about those gone before us such as JFK, Dr. King, Keith Whitley and of course the duke, and lane frost I believe). Well anyways the opening shot has him and his second wife esperanze baur (escuse the spelling) walking out of a place, and you can clearly see the "lack" of hair in the front, and back.

:D Lo and behold, I was down at my local Rite Aid this morning, and there was on the shelf a tag advertising that Sauza Commemorativo Tequila 750 ml was on sale for $13.99, half price! But alas - the shelf was empty :( . The good news is . . . RAIN CHECK!! I've got two "on hold" at the sale price, when the new shipment comes in.
Chester :newyear:
William T Brooks December 27th, 2005, 05:16 PM Chester,
If you can get the Sausa Commemorativo Tequila at that price of $13.99 a bottle, I will buy the Complete Batch for the 26 Bar Ranch. Every one wants to make a Toast to the Duke!!! :fear2:

chester7777 December 29th, 2005, 12:24 AM Are you sure the Indian elders won't be too upset with all that booze around there  ?
I guess as long as you only consume it one shot a day, for a toast in memory of John Wayne, it'll be OK. ;)

JOHNWAYNEABE February 17th, 2006, 08:19 PM Hmmmm? Didn't everyone that wore shorts in the 40's 50's 60's even 70's wear tight little shorts? :headbonk:
back in those days that was the norm. He does not look gay to me in that picture. And if I looked half as good as him I would be wearing them too. Also dont forget that big guy could kick the crap out of you in those tight little shorts. :cowboy:

ethanedwards February 18th, 2006, 01:52 PM Hi JOHNWAYNEABE,
I have it my copy of that book, although, that same
photograph was published as a front cover, of
a sunday magazine.
Just to the left of Duke's picture, in the book,
is one of Michelangelo's DAVID (1501-04)
and it suggest Duke is standing
in his customary Michelangelo contrapposto pose.
Whatever that means!!!!!
There is on the opposite page, another photograph,
where Duke is on the set of STAGECOACH,
in an almost identical pose, however, this time,
without the tight shorts,

Ethan,
What they are referring to goes back to the Duke and his study of the human form. The story I read was that as he was preparing for an acting career he studied art and how the great masters represented the human form. He recognised in Michelangelo's style of sculpting a form that he could adopt that would help him present himself most effectively on the screen.
I think it speaks volumes about the intelligence and insight of the man.
I would appreciate if we could resurrect this discussion from the ones who knew him best and most personally. If that wouldn't be too much of an intrusion.
If we could take ourselves to a camp fire, passing the bottle and as, someone suggested before, talking about John Wayne the man. We know about the actor.
I'd like to know how he related to those he was closest to, his friends and family.
Most of us never had the privilege of even meeting the man let alone spending some time living life with him.
What was a day in the life of John Wayne like? Again I don't mean to pry into people's private lives and memories. I just know it would mean alot to folks to hear.
Thanks,
|
