I can see that things in the off topic category are beginning to stagnate. So, in the spirit of ressurection I would very much like to here some fresh points of view on whether ol' Dukes' movies are or can possibly be construed as sexist and or demeaning to women.
Now before you all turn the page because the new guy is rehashing old news, please understand that this is not my intention. I was too late on the scene to participate in the Shootisters forum, and that is probably just as well. Last night I read over the whole list of offerings. And, while there were some good points, the general mood of it was fairly negative. It seemed that pretty much everyone was offended by the initial offering and the rest of it gave the impression that the Shootister was trying to justify some things she said that were obviously over the line and unfounded.
Anyway, that is just an outsiders view. I do not want to re-open old sores, nor do I want this to be a platform for feminism. You see, this particular subject came up the other day at work and I would like to hear your thoughts.
All I ask is that you simply respond to my opening question. Nobody has to start off in a defensive posture.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

I think with the amount of females we have posting on this board kinda shoots down the idea that the Dukes movies are offensive to women B) Alot of women out their enjoy the Duke as what he portrays :P Himself, a strong man who will not back down from his convictions ;)

I'm so sick and tired of hearing about men being sexist. It always sounds like women are saints. I am a woman and I do not feel that Dukes movies were sexist. I like watching a real man so I watch John Wayne. As for women being offended all they have to do is turn the tube off.

And speaking of the Duke NOT being offensive to women, have you checked out the Magnificent Seven thread in General Discussions? We have an artist among us, CHANCE, aka Graham Legett, who is doing a painting based loosely on The Magnificent Seven, with John Wayne in the middle and six or seven other cowboys with him, who will actually be members of the message board. There were so many interested, of both men and women, that the idea arose to do one with just men and one with women. It's not too late for you to get in on that ladies' version.

My take on if Duke ws a sexist. This really depends on who you ask. I myself don't think so, but was told by people at an early age that he was. I saw his movies, and thought to myself that if he was a sexist, maybe I am too.

I don't think of myself as a sexist, and have respect to the opposit sex. I don't tolerate stupidity from anybody, male or female. And there is a lot of them out there.

Duke, gave a lot of chances, more than he should. He dealt with it the only way most of would love to deal with it. Punch out the men or shoot them if they shoot you, and spank the women when they get out of line.

I agree. You know these were movies he made. It wasn't his real life. He didn't go around shooting people or spanking women all over the place. Some people need to lighten up. Criticize Criticize that's all they know. Have too much time on their hands.

Remember that Duke didn't just shoot and spank for the hell of it, he took a lot off people before doing this, and I must say, I wouldn't put up with it as long as Duke did.

When I was growing up watching "The Duke in Films" in the 1930s, 40, and 50s there was not a The Word "SEXIST" that is a Word that was Invented in the last few years. :angry:

Duke loved the Ladys and the Ladys Loved Him! :wub: And He never spoke down to The Ladys. :fear2: In those days a "Lady was a Lady and a Man was a Man, HALALAH!!!" :lol:

As to Duke Spanking some of the Ladys in His Films, :rolleyes: when they Lipped off to him too much, :fear: I do not think any of us would have liked it very much if He had Flattened them with a Punch to the Jaw like the Men that Lipped off to Him in His Films!!! :dead:

I've told this before but we have several new members since that post so I'll relate it again. It's kinda humorous.

I inherited my love for the Duke from my Mom, who was a hardcore Wayne fan.
Back in the late Forties, our family went to a drive-in theater one night to see one of the Duke's movies (it mght have been one of the cavalry trilogy, I can't remember.)

Anyway, after the movie was over and we were driving home, my Mom kept gushing over the Duke's performance. My step-dad, who wasn't quite as enthusiastic about Big John as Mom, finally got a bellyful of her extravagant praise of Duke and said to her, "Oh, I wish you had John Wayne stuck up your rear". My Mom wriggled her butt on the car seat, giggled loudly and said to my step-dad, "I wish so too". :lol: :lol:

Needless to say, my step-dad said nothing more on the way home. :lol:

I think I have put this up before, but in the 1970s when My Wife Martha and I dropped Duke and Pat Stacy off at the Orange County Airport, He gave Martha a Big Hug and a Kiss on the Cheek, and I thought She was going to FAINT. :dead:

Flying home late at night to Paso Robles, She Said "Boy that was some kind of Man, The Duke"!!! :jump: I think I was a little Jealous. :angry:

Thats funny you guys should mention that about your wives/mom's. My wife just last week said to me " Between John Wayne, me and that computer I don't know which one you love more". Of course she was just kidding, she knows she is way ahead of that, they just like to hear it from our mouths once in awhile!!
