Mini biography

Gruff, burly American character actor. Born in 1903 in Benkelman, Nebraska (confirmed by Social Security records; sources stating 1905 or Denver, Colorado are in error.) Bond grew up in Denver, the son of a lumberyard worker. He attended the University of Southern California, where he got work as an extra through a football teammate who would become both his best friend and one of cinema's biggest stars: John Wayne. Director John Ford promoted Bond from extra to supporting player in the film Salute (1929), and became another fast friend. An arrogant man of little tact, yet fun-loving in the extreme, Bond was either loved or hated by all who knew him. His face and personality fit perfectly into almost any type of film, and he appeared in hundreds of pictures in his more than 30-year career, in both bit parts and major supporting roles. In the films of Wayne and Ford, particularly, he was nearly always present. Among his most memorable roles are John L. Sullivan in Gentleman Jim (1942), Det. Tom Polhaus in The Maltese Falcon (1941) and the Rev. Capt. Samuel Johnson Clayton The Searchers (1956). An ardent but anti-intellectual patriot, he was perhaps the most vehement proponent, among the Hollywood community, of blacklisting in the witch hunts of the 1950s, and he served as a most unforgiving president of the ultra-right-wing Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals. In the mid-'50s he gained his greatest fame as the star of TV's "Wagon Train" (1957). During its production, Bond traveled to Dallas, Texas, to attend a football game and died there in his hotel room of a massive heart attack.

Hi,

Ward, along with Yak and Paul,
was one of Duke's earliest friends, that would
become lifelong friends.
Appearing in19 movies, and 1 TV Film with Duke,
some of which are Duke classics.
Some of early ones, Duke may or not
have been involved, but are listed in most filmographies.

The chemistry between the two friends was obvious,
and it showed in these films,

Another one of our favorites, of all Duke's co-stars, is Ward Bond. He is like Jack Pennick, in that he is a familiar face, but much easier to identify because he has bigger parts.

My wife especially enjoys him in It's a Wonderful Life, as the policeman. Both in that movie and in They Were Expendable, he showed off a fairly decent singing voice (unlike John Wayne, who couldn't sing worth a lick :o ).

I love Ward Bond. I think his best performance was as John L. Sullivan in Gentleman Jim.

Hi May,
I like him in Gentleman Jim too. 3 Godfathers is one of his finest performance to me.

I agree with 3 Godfathers. One of my favorite scenes from that film is near the beginning when the outlaws first ride into town and are greeted by Ward Bond and Mae Marsh.

One of my favorite Ward Bond characters was the preacher in The Searchers. The thing about him was he was such a good character actor.

I just turned a very good friend of mine on to Tall in the Saddle yesterday.

Ward Bond did an excellent job as the bad guy.

Unfortunately, Elisabeth Risdon hit him in the head with a big flower pot near the end of the movie.

Ward Bond was a favorite in many roles, but I think he was excellent in "The Quiet Man" playing Father Lonergan. He was both authoritative and funny in a role that could have otherwise have been lost among all the other characterizations in that movie.

I've always enjoyed watching Ward Bond in every film he was in. He was one of the most natural actors I've ever watched. He was so good at his profession that he made it look easy.

Hi all.

Ward Bond has turned up in some of the
greatest movies ever made. He must have
been one of the busiest actors in Hollywood.
It seems he worked with all the greats. I always
enjoy watching him.

Emmanuel.

Ward Bond is another comfortable, familiar face. I'm sure his unexpected death greatly saddened John Wayne - they had been friends for so long :( !

Check out what's on the 'net about Ward Bond -

Has to be my favorite character actor. Too many to mention but wanted to be sure that I include The Quiet Man and It's a Wonderful Life as two of my favorites.

A wonderful actor indeed. Just watched 'Johnny Guitar' last night, and his role as Mr. McIvers (head of the townsfolk possie) made the film better than it had a right to be.

One of my favorite westerns, not starring John Wayne...

Ward Bond was great!
The first time I noticed him was in "It's a Wonderful Life", then from there I noticed him everywhere.

He was such a man's man. I see why John Wayne was a friend.

Unlike you, I first started noticing Ward Bond in John Wayne movies (I think his role in The Searchers was the one I found most memorable originally). After that, it was a most pleasant surprise to discover him in It's a Wonderful Life.

Truthfully, I remember my first exposure to Ward bond in his Wagon Train series - before I started ni=oticing him in some of Duke's movies. I always did like him as well. Darn shame he died so young. One wonders what "could-have-been" in some of Duke's later movies, had he lived.

I think the weight gain was necessary to make Bond a star on TV. By 1957 he was no longer such a tough guy at 54, and had matured into the favourite uncle type.

He must have been a very heavy smoker listening to his voice, yet I think the only film where I saw him smoke was Blowing Wild with Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck.

Another role of his I enjoyed was in Hondo, although he did not get that much screen time

One of my favorite Bond scenes is from They Were Expendable. Bond was the Chief on Robert Montgomery's PT boat and he was always sniping with Murray Alper, the Chief on Waynes PT boat but, you could tell they were best friends. When Wayne loses his boat and Alper as his Chief, he makes it back to the base and as he tells Montgomery about who he lost, Bond just gets this empty look on his face and says, "that's great, that's just great". Then you could see both the anger and sorrow in his face over losing his buddy and rival.

The Duke's best friend was without a doubt Ward Bond. His presence in his movies was made better because of his presence. What was your favorite Ward Bond movie with or without the Duke. Mine was The Searchers.

Mine was The Searchers. Captain dan, that's a hard one for me to answer. I seem to enjoy all the movies that Duke and Ward Bond were in together. 3 Godfathers, The Searchers, Rio Bravo are all favorites of mine (and yes I know there are several others as well). From what I've seen on the tv, Ward and Duke played practical jokes on each other as well.

My favourite Ward Bond character was in The Quiet Man as the vicar. The bit when he finally catches that fish he's been after and he has to leave it allways makes me laugh.
He could be deadly serious or do comedic roles equally well
