Trivia
Worked in nearly every sound picture directed by John Ford as part of Ford's "troop of players."

Originally a horse wrangler, he played small parts in many westerns.

Was known to be an expert in the "manual of arms" for existing and some extinct military units. May have been former Marine or military man. Can be seen marching as "right guard" at the very beginning of Stars and Stripes Forever (1952) uncredited.

Appears at the end of She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (at the party) choreographing the escort squad, in a scene that someone in Continuity should have caught. Clearly knew his military drill.

Veteran of both WWI and WWII. Enlisting at the age of nearly 50, he received a Silver Star after being wounded in WWII.

Mini Biography
From All Movie Guide:
WWI-veteran Jack Pennick was working as a horse wrangler when, in 1926, he was hired as a technical advisor for the big-budget war drama What Price Glory? Turning to acting in 1927, Pennick made his screen bow in Bronco Twister. His hulking frame, craggy face, and snaggle-toothed bridgework made him instantly recognizable to film buffs for the next 35 years. Beginning with 1928's Four Sons and ending with 1962's How the West Was Won, Pennick was prominently featured in nearly three dozen John Ford films. He also served as Ford's assistant director on How Green Was My Valley (1941) and Fort Apache (1947), and as technical advisor on The Alamo (1960), directed by another longtime professional associate and boon companion, John Wayne. Though pushing 50, Jack Pennick interrupted his film career to serve in WWII, earning a Silver Star after being wounded in combat. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

My thoughts of Jack are simple, in whatever film you watched,
he always seemed to be there!!
Our Military history members, will confirm, he was a Drill Sgt, by day
and a Drill Sgt.on the set, just what Pappy needed on a days filming!

Jack Pennick was the stalwart of the
John Ford Stock Company
appearing in the most movies with him.

Jack made 21 films with, or involving Duke,
and 1 TV special
and may be more, as he was used in all sorts of capacities

It's kind of interesting about Jack Pennick. His was a face that was familiar to us, having seen it in many John Wayne films, but never knowing who he was. Finally, he was in some movie as a character we could identify and go to IMDb and find out who he was. After that, we really noticed him. He's kind of like Hank Worden - a real fixture.

Hi Vera,
I've looked everywhere for a photo of him!
perhaps another member, might come up with something!
You can spot him, in all those films,
you've just got to know, where to look!
The best ones, I think to see him,
are as Cuffy Brown in LADY FROM LOUSIANNA
and Joe McGuffey in THE WINGS OF EAGLES

Hi Vera other good pictures of him are as the sergeant with maleria who is replaced by William Holden in the Horse Soldiers and as one of the sergeants in Fort Apache.

The best one is his portrayal of the captain in The Fighting Kentuckian.

Hi Arthur,
Thank you so much for your help. I'm sure know him well (but didn't know his name). When you see the same face at the small parts in you beloved films, he became something like a good friend. Thats why I so exited that I recognised him at last. At 3 Godfathers he was on the train service.
It is great about Ford that he did with all these small parts, he had so many recognizable charecters in his movies (not only leading parts), he cared about "small" people. I love him for that too.
Regards,
Vera

I always enjoy spotting all the members of the stock company whenever I watch a John Ford movie. Of course, I like to see Jack Pennick show up (which he almost always did). He appeared in Liberty Valance, but not in Donovan's Reef. This was filmed on location shortly before Jack died.... I don't know if he was not well enough to travel to Hawaii for the filming, but I sured missed seeing him in the movie.

Sad to say, but as often as we have seen Jack Pennick's face in movies, there is woefully little about him on the Internet :( . All I could find was this -

Like Jim and Sue, I never knew his name but recognized his face in many movies. I always thought that he was Grant Withers or someone like that-not knowing what Grant Withers looked like either until I spotted him in an Errol Flynn movie.

Reading about the cinematographer (Archie Stout) who had worked with John Wayne in 30 movies, and then others who had worked with him (Duke) in over 30 films, made me think about faces we had seen many times, and brought to mind Jack Pennick. I see that Keith was able to get a photo of Jack since his original posting of the introduction to this prolific actor.

When we first started getting into John Wayne's movies, it was fun getting acquainted with the many familiar faces and finally putting names to them. Jack Pennick was one of the hardest ones to identify.

Anyway, I thought it would be fun to bring Jack Pennick back to the top!
