An artist wants to do a 1960 drive-in theater scene in color, with about 20% of the image being the movie screen in black&white. Classic cars in foreground and a Santa Fe train background. The image, though small, should be immediately recognizable as "the Duke". The artist thinks of Rio Bravo, John is standing, leaning against a porch column, outside the saloon. Original painting in progress, limited prints coming? Comments please?

Kernalmarlo,

Welcome to the John Wayne Message Board! You've come to the right place for comments and probably suggestions and answers.

I know there are others around here who will have a little more detail on exact release dates of movies, I'm counting on them to step in and help out.

Rio Bravo came out in 1959, so might not have been on a drive-in screen in 1960. The John Wayne movies from 1960 were North to Alaska and The Comancheros. Depending on when they were released might affect how suitable they would be for the picture. I guess it all depends on how accurate you want to be, and how knowledgeable the general audience is that you want to appeal to (or how much they would care).

Sounds like a great idea for a piece of art.

Yo Cheter your knowlege on the Duke is certainly heating up although you could always argue that Rio Bravo was released in 1960 although it was made in 1959. Dont forget the Alamo was made in 1960 although its a poor movie I thought I should mention it.

Do you mean that the Alamo is a poor choice for the painting that the posting is discussing, or do you mean that the Alamo was a poor movie?

What is the latest (as of 1960) popular movie with the Duke, but in black&white?
