Mini biography

As a young man, George Hayes worked in a circus and played semi-pro baseball. He appeared in vaudeville and on the legitimate stage, primarily in stock companies. Retired in his 40s, he lost much of his money in the 1929 stock market crash and was forced to return to work. He had made his film debut prior to the crash, and continued working steadily until his second retirement in his late 60s. He gained fame as Hopalong Cassidy's sidekick Windy Halliday in many films between 1936-39. Leaving the Cassidy films, he was legally precluded from using the "Windy" nickname, and so took on the sobriquet "Gabby", and was so billed from about 1940. One of the few sidekicks to land on the annual list of Top Ten Western Boxoffice Stars, he did so repeatedly. In his early films he alternated between whiskered comic relief sidekicks and clean-shaven bad guys, but by the later 1930s he worked almost exclusively as a Western sidekick to stars such as John Wayne Roy Rogers and Randolph Scott. After his last film, in 1950, he starred as the host of a network television show devoted to stories of the old West for children, "The Gabby Hayes Show" (1950). Offstage an elegant and well-appointed connoisseur and man-about-town, Hayes devoted the final years of his life to his investments.

Hi,
What can you say about this man, he was a great character actor,
from the toothless, Gabby, to the suave George.
In one or two of the Lone Star films, I found, that when he
wasn't playing Gabby, it was hard to believe, it was him.
His personas, were miles apart!!
I have fond memories, from Hopalong, onwards.

He made15 films with Duke,

Tall in the Saddle ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) (1944) .... Dave
In Old Oklahoma ([Only registered and activated users can see links])(1943) .... Despirit Dean (stage driver)
Dark Command ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) (1940) (as George Hayes) .... Andrew 'Doc' Grunch
The Lawless Nineties ([Only registered and activated users can see links])(1936) (as George Hayes) .... Maj. Carter

The Lucky Texan ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) (1934) (as George Hayes) .... Jake 'Grandy' Benson
Riders of Destiny ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) (1933) (as George Hayes) .... Charlie Denton

Gabby came from the New York stage, but won everlasting fame
as a character actor in these budget westerns.
Paul Malvern the producer said,I had him playing old men, heavies, fathers, gangsters, and everything else!!...He was priceless
In The Lucky Texan , it was hilarious when Gabby was dressed as a woman!!!
George had a photographic memory, and became a master at film acting.
Finally Malvern said,
He would read that script once, and he knew, not only his part, but he knew everybody elses.

To help maintain continuity, and try to keep things "all under one roof" here is a a post I made, over in "What Was the Last Western You Watched."

While at a local electronics store this evening, I picked up a copy of Don't Fence Me In (1945), with Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, and Gabby Hayes.

It is one in the Happy Trails Theatre collection, and here's what it says on the box -

Roy Rogers, the King of the Cowboys, and Dale Evans, his saddlemate onscreen and off, host a roundup of Roy's best films, which made him #1 at the box office for all Western stars, every year from 1942 to 1954.* The only versions authorized by the Rogers estate, they're mastered with the best available source material and contain added bonuses as Roy, Dale, and their guests recall the "happy trails" they've traveled together!

Plot:* John English, who later worked with Roy on TV, directed this 1945 film featuring Cole Porter's famous title tune, in which journalist Toni Ames (Dale) heads West to Twin Wells to seek the truth about Wildcat Kelly.* She soon finds out that Wildcat's "friend" Gabby Whittaker (Gabby Hayes), is really the notorious outlaw, long since reported dead -- but when she refuses Roy's request to keep it a secret, somebody shoots Gabby!

Bonus Features include a very enjoyable "Sidekicks" feature which features many of the sidekicks Roy Rogers had over the years, like Andy Devine, Gabby Hays, Smiley Burnett, Pat Brady, and others.

Near the end of the movie, Roy Rogers and Trigger do a little "dance" routine (obviously, Trigger is doing the fancy footwork :D ).* We thought of you, etsija and Senta, and wondered if you would especially enjoy that scene.

A very delightful, mostly lighthearted 62 minutes, with a couple of songs by the Sons of the Pioneers.

As soon as Keith posts a Pals of the Saddle entry for Roy Rogers, we'll make sure to link there, too.

What is really neat to me is that when that obit was written, nobody had any concept of people watching all these old movies in any way but as reruns on TV, if that. The last line in the article says, "He still received fan mail from all over the world, including many letters from Africa, where his movies are still being shown."

"We've come a long way, baby!"

He is a real favorite of mine!!

Hi

[Only registered and activated users can see links] ([Only registered and activated users can see links])

A pretty neat photo of Gabby. In the films he played with John Wayne he made a sinister villian in some of them, except in the one where he played Matt the Mute and wrote everything down.

My memory of him is that most of the time, he's a good guy, though definitely "an ornery old cuss". Do you remember specific titles where he plays the villain, because off the top of my head I'm not coming up with any.

P.S. Great picture!

Hi Jim and Sue

In randy Rides Alone he played Matt the Mute, and I think in The Star Packer he played the Shadow.

In one of the films if I remember right the outlaws headquarters is a tree stump in the middle of town.

A good story line, gets you wondering where the fatal shots come from!!!

As you say Arthur,
those are the only 2 Duke films that I know of.
I was unsure as to whether Jim meant
ANY film he starred in as a villian!!

Gabby Hayes was another of those whose names were household names in our house. I never knew what he looked like until we finally got cable TV and had seen him in: The Dark Command. The first time I saw him in anything, I became an instant fan of his. I would have loved to have seen him paired up with Al St. John - because both of them were hoots and would have easily "stole-the-show" of any movie had they both been in one together.
