AEC23,

That is really great. Duke would be proud. Could you tell the board where you got this information. I'd personally like to see the complete list. I'd like to know also why they didn't name J.B. Books in The Shootist, of John T. Chance in Rio Bravo, and most of all Hondo Lane in Hondo :)

Just Kidding about Hondo!

Take Care and Cheers,
Hondo Duke Lane

You can get the complete list of 400 nominees, and the final 50 heroes and 50 villains at the American Film Institute website. The address is www.afi.com. Out of the Duke's seven nominations only one made it in the top 100, and that was Rooser Cogburn. He landed at #36 for the heroes. It was a pretty good show. A lot of interesting characters, and some surprises on who made the list.

I heard about some of this on the radio this morning. Hondo, you will be happy to hear that the number one hero was Atticus Finch, from To Kill a Mockingbird (#2 was Indiana Jones and #3 was James Bond). Duke only came in at 36 out of 50, in the character of Rooster Cogburn. The entertainment editor who was reporting on this admitted that the film professionals that made up the voting body are generally quite young, which is why he felt John Wayne came in so far behind.

I don't know any more than that, but the info is probably available on the web somewhere. If I find it, I'll post a link.

I, too, thought that Atticus was an excellent choice for the top hero. I also thought Hannibal Lector was a good choice for top villain. It doesn't get much more scarier than him. :o

Chester,

Well, that's pretty good about Atticus Finch. I find that very surprising, due to the fact that the movie is over 40 years old, and young people picking their choices. He was very good in that movie; may I say excellent. And a little disappointed about Duke only getting (1) one selection on that top 50. But he did get a great one, and it was Rooster Cogburn.

Yeah haw!

I think that possibly the reason for Atticus Finch being number one is because the movie to kill a mocking bird is shown in secondary schools for English as it is a movie that is studied, I personally know of people whom have studied it. I basically think that the list is intersting but pointless and slightly inaccurate and I feel that Johns postion should natually be higher along with some other characters but thats jsut my opinion.
