View Full Version : John Wayne On Super 8
DukePilgrim January 9th, 2006, 04:21 AM As well as buying videos and DVDs of John Wayne I also collected John Wayne movies on super 8 film for some years. I have now updated to DVD projection which I use in my home cinema to see all movies as they would appear in the cinema.
Out of interest do any other forum members collect super 8 and 16mm or use DVD projection in their homes?
Another question that USA members may be able assist me on is was True Grit ever
released as a full feature by a company called Marketing Films.
In Europe it was only released in edited versions as a hour digest (3x400ft) and as a twenty minute digest (400ft) although it was advertised in their USA catalogues as being issued as a uncut feature.
I never managed to find a copy or even know a collector who had one. Out of curiosity anyone got one or seen one.
Another question Hellfighters was apparently being produced by Universal 8 as a full length feature before they left the super 8 market for video in the early 1980s.
did it ever get issued?
The Ringo Kid January 9th, 2006, 04:30 PM Never heard of a DvD Projector? I assume (hopefully correctly) that it's like a film projector? If so, sounds like a cool thing to own.

Hi Duke Pilgrim,
It sound mighty interesting. I thought about purchasing some films on the reel (saw some on e-bay), but I don't know what kind of size must it be - 8mm (that can be shown at homes) and 16 mm are used in the theaters or more ize 35 mm? I'm curios about that. And what kind of progector?

Senta
DukePilgrim January 10th, 2006, 07:01 AM Hello
DVD projectors are all the rage now. Instead of viewing DVD via a television
you watch a projected image produced from projector with DVD player connected to it.
Prices used to be in the £10000s of pounds and only the very rich had them
In their homes but prices had now come down to around £500 mark for a good quality machine. Machine are simply mounted via ceiling or on shelf on wall and connected into DVD player, amplifier and speaker system
I attch a link to the machine I have and a film forum were you can see screen shots information etc.

Mark’s site is ideal for asking questions and they are a very friendly bunch

I have built a home cinema to the back of my house by converting a garage
so when I want the full cinema experience I watch my movies there. Trust me once you have seen films projected as they should be you will never go back to the television.
DukePilgrim January 10th, 2006, 07:12 AM In regard to super 8 a number of titles come up on ebay from time to time. Most are super 8.
These tend to be 400ft digests with have colour packaging. These are fairly common despite what the seller may say. Expect to pay around £10.00 for one are less.
I sold a lot of my digests to a John Wayne collector who used them in his den as memorabila with a film projector.
When I get the time I will post a list of what is available on super 8 for John Wayne. In regard to projectors the most recent are now at least 25 years old so be very careful about buying via ebay.
If you want I will post link to dealers who sell projectors and films who are reliable.
New Super 8 film titles are still being produced to this day with the latest release being Master & Commander with Russell Crowe at £400 for a feature length print.
No John Wayne titles have being produced since the late 1980s with Circus World being the last release via German market but to be honest with aging equipment colour fade on older stock and the ease to scratching of the actual film it is a very specialist market which you need to gain knowledge of before venturing into.
The Ringo Kid January 10th, 2006, 01:52 PM Hi Duke and thank you for the info. I would not mind having a DvD projector. In fact, i'd hook it up outside and make it a sort of "Drive In" theater. Just the other day I was talking with several neighbors of mine about having something like this but none of us had known that a DvD projector indeed existed.
For now the price is a bit out of my range and maybe in a year or so will be lowered enough as more come on the market?
Senta January 10th, 2006, 10:40 PM Hi Duke Pilgrim,
Thank you for providing all these information. May be this progectors can be used in the cinemas too?

DukePilgrim January 19th, 2006, 09:21 AM List of John Wayne movie available on Super 8
I have listed below what movies are available on super 8 relating to John Wayne.
Package Super 8 movies were sold to collectors from early 1970s to mid 1980s
Although the odd title still appeared after that date.
Initially only edited highlights of films were issued in 200 foot and 400 foot reels.
These came in an array of formats Black & White Silent, Colour Silent, Black & White Sound and Colour Sound.
Most of these titles were sold in cardboard boxes with artwork from the film or plastic clam shell cases
As time went by long versions of movies were issued to collectors until full length features were available.
In addition, to official releases were production/distribution rights had been gained by the issuing company a number of bootleg /pirate prints of much sought after features have also been printed using a16mm negative or print.
Most of these type of prints would have problems with scratches negative damage or sound faults.
Other unusual titles to surface were theatrical trailers and production reels used for marketing purposes.
Super 8 despite it small collector base can attract high prices and the likes of features can sell for hundreds of pounds.
Problems with super 8 as well as its cost are as follows:-
Colour fade – Films prior to the introduction of low fade stocks of super 8 in the 1980s can be prone to colour fade were the colours of a film can diminish to browny reds. This is a bit like Russian roulette as different stacks of film are affected in different ways and degrees. Storage of film in cool dry conditions
are recommended and countries with wide varying temperatures (such as USA) seem to have more films effected by colour fade than say Europe.
Damage - Super 8 film is easily damaged by scratching which can occur by using poorly maintained/cleaned projectors. Also, because the sound is recorded on small oxide strips similar to cassette tape this can be damaged by poor storage
or handling.
Equipment – The last new super 8 projectors were made in late 1970s and early 1980s. This means latest machines are at least 25 years old. Unless you buy from a reputable source such as a dealer there is on guarantee that your machine will work or not damage the film. If interested in using a projector ask lots of questions and if possible see machine working DO NOT BUY FROM EBAY AS THIS IS A CASE OF PAY YOUR MONEY TAKE YOUR CHANCE.
As mentioned, there are a number of reputable dealers who sell second hand equipment and will guarantee working of machine for a least 3 months from purchase. I can recommend companies such as Perry’s Paul Foster Films and Independent 8 for equipment.
Most John Wayne fans with the availability of DVD and Video I think will
not make the effort of being a fully fledged film collector.
However as a piece of memorabilia from a by gone age the smaller versions of films in colour packaging make a nice addition to a collection.

DukePilgrim August 7th, 2006, 04:36 AM Hi All
Is anyone aware of any movie footage apart from the theatrical movies he made of John Wayne being available to the public?
When you consider the years he was around . the number of fans and occasions and places like USO shows he visited there must be lots of footage.
I know a lot of footage of Elvis has turned over the years from fans but I am not aware of any similar footage of John being made available.

Howdy DukePilgrim,
I don't know if this will be of any help to you, but check in the Trading Post section of the message board under "Rare Duke Documentaries". I have been corresponding with a fella from Germany and he has some things, as do I, listed in this topic. Hope this helps.
Best,
Colorado Bob
DukePilgrim August 7th, 2006, 04:21 PM Hi Colorado Bob
Just been to the trading post. Yes there are some interesting items. If they are available on Region 0 or 2 I would be definitely interested in making some arrangement
Best
Mike
DukePilgrim May 24th, 2009, 04:59 PM Here are some examples of super 8 movies packaging of the Duke.
The Dark Command & Fighting Kentuckian digests suggest that 20th Century Fox were cashing in on his Rooster Cogburn popularity rather than how John Wayne looked in the actual movies.
