Hello Duke Heads

My Favourite Thing in a John Wayne Movie are those brilliant lines that only the Duke can Deliver.

As My name is the Shootister lol and it holds a special meaning to me I say this line to those of you who dont particulary like me Taken from the shootist.

"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I expect the same from them."

And another of my favourite lines taken from "In Harms way" up the marines, is for those of you who dont like challenging debates.

"All battles are fought by scared men who'd rather be some place else."

Well,

I like Duke in Big Jake when serveral times in the movie, when was asked who he was and he told them Jacob McCandles, they would always say, "I thought you were dead" McCandles then would say, "Not Hardly!" Great line.

Also in the same movie, Wayne says to Fain when Fain opens the ransom box, "Now you understand. Anything goes wrong, anything at all, your fault, my fault, nobody's fault. It don't matter. I'm gonna blow your head off. It's as simple as that.... No matter what else happens. No matter who gets killed. I'm gonna blow your head off."

Hi Shootister!

I totally agree with you about the line in the Shootist! And I love that movie, although it is very hard for me to watch.
Another line I like is from Rio Bravo, " Sorry don't don't get done Dude."
And even though True Grit is not my favorite movie I like the line, "Come see a fat old man some time!"
And then the line from Rio Lobo where Shasta says that John Wayne is comfortable, and at the end when he says, "Just don't call me comfortable!"

"Let's go Home, Debbie"

"Good luck, C-Troop!", the lest-we-forget-scene from Yellow Ribbon

The reaction-shots on Wayne when Brennan delivers this line several times in Red River: "You was wrong, Mr. Dunson."

The last line ever: "This is my birthday. Gimme the best of the house."

"My friends just call me Ringo."

"Not thinking. Just remembering". The last night at The Alamo.

Come to think of it, there are quite a lot of good lines!

Hello Duke Heads

I have to agree with Stacy about finding it hard to watch the shootist, I had forgotten Hondo about Big Jake and not hardly that was a brilliant line as invincible as the duke and timeless.

Itdo Is also correct there are to many great lines to remember.

I don't know that this is my favorite line, or a particularly famous one, but after some of the information that has been shared in other threads regarding Geraldine Page's "allergy" to soap, I found the following statement by the Duke (in Hondo) particularly funny -

" . . . I can smell you when I'm downwind of ya . . . I could find you in the dark, Mrs. Lowe."

Of course, the "dots" in the middle were filled with fairly complimentary things that he said to her. If she really smelled as bad as has been reported, John Wayne can DEFINITELY act (not that any of us doubted that!).

After watching Hondo last night (the first time for my wife), we are half way on the way to being able to comment on another thread on this board (can you guess which one . . . ? ;) ).

Cheers!

I have a hard time taking the romantic scenes in Hondo seriously. Geraldine Page doesn't match up well with John Wayne in my opinion. There is a line-I can't remember if it was Duke's or Geraldine's-that refers to her as homely. The phrasing is so great that I always have to laugh at that part.

There are so many great Duke lines. I like a lot of them from North to Alaska. One that comes to mind is good because of the delivery. At the end of the movie Angel and Sam are in the street and he is trying to keep her from leaving. She wants a good reason and after going back and forth with "why" and "because," he shouts "because I love you!"

The Cowboys is another one of my favorites. In particular I like the exchange between the stuttering kid and Duke. The kid calls him an SOB and John Wayne makes him repeat it until it comes out strong and clear, but John Wayne follows it up with "I wouldn't make a habit of calling me that, son."

This is a good topic ;)

Here are some of my favourite Duke lines

In the train robbers he throws his friend a rifle and tells him "if anyone tries to cross that river before we get out of sight BAPTISE THEM"

In Rio Lobo the heavy states to John "I should have taken you this morning"
John (calmly) "You should have tried"

When Martin Pawley angrily asks Duke in the Searchers "what if youd missed"
John Replies "Never occured to me" You need to see the movie to get the full effect of that great line and the way John delivers it.

There are others I just cant think of them now, like shootister stated the creed in the shootist is great.

I have many, but I always loved the line he used in McLintock. "I was called that once. Looked it up in the dictionary. 'Best you don't know what it means." And another is from True Grit when he tried to issue papers on a rat, "Mr. Rat! I have a writ here says your to stop eating Chin Lee's corn meal forth wit. Now, it's a rat writ, writ for a Rat, and this is lawful service of same." Ahh, I could go on and on. dukefan1

Duchess, your right, that line is hilarious.
She says, "I am well aware that I am a homely woman Mr. Lane."
And he says, "Aw, I didn't mean that. Besides, looks ain't much."
I laugh at that one every time.
Another good line from McLintock is, "Don't push me beurocrat."
And what ever the politicians' name was,"Cuthbert--------- is a cull."
"A what?"
"A cull is a specimen so worthless that you have to cut him out of the herd. Cuthbert is the one at whom I would throw my rope."

hi jw fans sorry is been so long, i guess my favourite line comes from rio bravo in the berdett saloon with dude at one end and jw at the other and a berdett thug bending down to pick up his gun "you want that gun pick it up"its also used in the movie GET SHORTY when a thug was watching rio bravo on the tv.

pompy,
That's one of my favorite Duke lines, too, but I like the full version:

"I know, I know, I'm gonna use good judgement. I haven't lost my temper in 40 years. But, pilgrim, you caused a lot a trouble this morning (poking the other fellar in the ribs with the shotgun); might've gotten someone killed. And somebody ought to belt you in the mouth, but I won't.... I won't..... The HELL I won't!"

As a matter of fact, there seems to be several good Duke lines from just about every one of his movies.

In McLintock! Maureen O'Hara gets in several good lines too!!!

In the same scene, but earlier: "There's a lot things I ain't sayin' to ya fella, as long as you got that shotgun in my middle!"

There are two lines in McLintock, I beleive they were both in the hotel when he went to meet his wife........One was "I'd like to know what put the bur under your saddle about me", and the other is something to the effect of "Out of all the women in the world it has to be you that stirs me" something like that anyway....They just give me goosebumps.

I cannot believe no one has mentioned my favorite from Eldorado, when the Duke returns to town to save his drunk sherriff friend, and after waking him with a bucket of cold water, the drunk sherriff says to the Duke "what are you lookin at?" Angry, Wayne replies "I'm looking at a tin star with a drunk pinned on it."

Yes General S Price that is a classic line but its real hard to pick your favourite line against the lines that show our hero,s sence of humour in the fighting kentuckian he tells oliver hardy (from laurel & hardy Fame) to blow meaning blow the buggle and he does just that blow without the buggle to his mouth, and in Rio Lobo frenchie is on bended knee to the leading lady when jw says "Are you coming with us or have you got something better to do" but not to forget Jack Elam had some great lines to like "he,s at anther gate now looking for St Peter,my other favourite line comes from Tall in the saddle when jw and George "Gabby" Hayes find themselfs in a shack sheltering from the rain and after jw has been hired to watch for russlers George G Hayes is drying his clothes by the fire and putting them on as they dry but hes sitting under a water jug when a shot hits the jug a George get wet "are you alright" "I Will be if i ever get Dry" I know Jw had a great sense of humour and loved his job and theres a lot of us thank him for that.

One line that is a favorite of our seven year old son comes from The Fighting Kentuckian. John Wayne says, "Anymore talking would be a waste of time."
Oliver Hardy responds with, "It sure would." They exchange knowing glances and then both swing punches at a guy and knock him out.

Another good one is from Dark Command...when Wayne all but accuses the guilty Walter Pigeon of cattle rustling under the cover of school-teacher...Pigeon fires at Wayne, "Cattle-rustling and school-teaching don't mix...you know that!" to which the Duke replies..."I know it. Make sure you do."

The other good line from George "Gabby" Hayes in tall in the saddle telling dave his old friend Harolday wont take back what he said dave replies what he say... YOUR FIRED.

he,s given us all lessons in how to shoot a 45 with especially jimmy stewart in who shot liberty vallance Ron Howard in the Shootist and who could forget James Caan,s one shot a the cattus in El Dorado ...aw its useless.

Two others come to mind for me:

1) In Donovan's Reef he asks the doc's daughter if she hurt her "self" after she fell out of the jeep.

2) In The Quiet Man Mary Kate says that it's a pretty cottage to which Sean simply replies "I think so" in a very humble and loving manner.

JW had a way of delivering a simple line and making it have special meaning.

I love that line from The Quiet Man. Him and Maureen could say everything to each other with just a look. I also like when he picks a little flower from the grass and gives it to her. He doesn't say anything about it, and she just wraps her hands around it. It's a really touching scene.

Guys and Gals, although there are many 2 lines always stick out for me and I always have wanted to get into somekind of predicament where I could use them. One is the line mentioned before from Big Jake--my fault, your fault, nobodies fault, I'm gonna blow your head off.

The other one is From the Shootist and, in my mind is so classic I can't beleive no one else has mentioned it. I think it is his first line or very near so in that movie where he says "Mister, you need to look for another line of work, this one sure don't fit your pistol".

I got my first John Wanye DVD yeaterday at Fry's--the Special addition Alamo.

Great line from "The Shootist". I forgot that one, and I agree that is classic. There are many to choose from, and I am sure that someone will mention others we forgot. As for me, as I approach middle age, I find myself forgetting things all the time, so reminding me is alright.

I dont know why but I think that it is because of the thunder and lightening etc that makes this my favourite Duke line.

Its in Big Jake and Duke and Sam Sharpnose are approaching the bad guys for the final shootout.

Duke says "Pitchfork rain right not, be in our favour
Sam "Yea and lightening might help"
Duke "Might hurt to" and as he says this we see and hear thunder and lightening as we are watching them ride to the showdown how cool is this line or am I unique in liking it. :D

What are some of your personal favorite one liners the Duke has said. There are several in every movie but the ones I can think of off the top of my head right now are from True Grit when asked what direction he was moving when he was backing up. "Backwards! I always go backwards when I'm backin' up!" And the part in Big Jake when the he is told to let down the guy before he gets hung at the beginning "You got me real scared Mr." Then he throws the knife into the tree next to the guys face, "You let him down!" The Duke is the man!!!

I am going to break away from your question to give a quote from John Waynes Friend Bob Hope. This is true as told by his daughter. Bob Hopes family were gathered around the death bed. The good byes had been said. His daughter asked her dad where do you want us to bury you?

Bob Hope never without a come back said, "Why don't you surprise me."

I could see John Wayne with a come back like that also.

Can you imagine the USO show they had in heaven on Monday night with all the greats there. Where I live is in the desert and we had a major electrical storm Monday night. Lightening and thunder. All I could think of was that it must be the applause from the show in heaven.

I think the scene in the Alamo where I beleive Denver Pyle asks John Wayne what he's thinking about? Duke replies " Not thinking, Just rememberin' "
I think that is a great response in view of what is going to happen.

Another bit of dialogue is in Chisum, when Discussing a situation with Forest Tucker tells him he didn't like him and they might have to be neighbors but he didn't have be neighborly. Afterwards, Duke tells Tucker it's no threat,FACT.
Another scene is down at the river where Duke tells the bandits that those animals are his. The fellow says there must be some mistake. Duke replies," You made it"
I think that one movie has about the best lines of a John Wayne movie.

Let me add my WELCOME to you as well! :D

We've heard that the cottage in The Quiet Man is in ruins. Is that the case? Is there any effort to try to restore it, that you might have heard about? My wife and I belong to a group, Duke's Hollywood Cowboys, that is planning on travelling to Ireland to commemorate John Wayne's 100th birthday in 2007, with hopes of visiting the area from TQM.

Any information about the area that you might be able to post would be appreciated.

Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you around here often. And keep on watching the Duke's movies with your little one. I have a seven year old who loves the Duke with a passion, and is incredibly familiar with his movies.

Hi Chester
first off thank you for making me feel welcome. Cong is a lovely village just north of Galway on Irelands west coast. Cohens bar is still there, but unfortunatley it's not a bar but a shop. The internal bar scenes were studio shot. The village still retains it's charm from those far off days. but the cottage" White O Morn" has fallen to the ravages of time. There is a book, written within the last few years, called In the Footsteps of The Quiet Man. It makes a great read and captures the whole experience of Ireland in the late50's.
At the moment we are having some great weather, which if you are familiar with Ireland thats pretty rare. Thats why it's so green and the Irish so pale, but it's the kind of good weather they got when filming TQM.
I hope you guys make it here in 2007 theres something about that feeling you get
when you walk in the footsteps of The Quiet Man.

Hi Karl!
yours is a wonderful country to travel with wonderful people in it, and the whole town of Cong is of course one big movie-location which Ford used to its best advantage. I wonder if Joe Mellotte who was JW's stand-in back then is still well and around, sitting up in his own bar. I think it's so nice of him to sit down with people and tell the old stories all over again (like he probably did one trillion times!) but he looked quite fragile when I was there.

The dialogue at the end of Big Jake where he is talking to Richard Boone about "No matter what else happens." I thought that was his best of all the movies. The way he looked at Boone and spoke you really believe that that was his Grandson and he had every intention of making good his statement. Loved that bit of dialogue.

My favorite dialog from Duke, comes from the Searchers, when Capt. Clayton ( Ward Bond ) asked " WHAT GOOD DID THAT DO YA " after he just shot out the eyes of the dead comanch! Duke replys

" BY WHAT YOU PREACH, NONE, BUT WHAT THAT COMANCH BELIEVES, AIN'T GOT NO EYES CAN'T ENTER THE SPIRIT LAND. HAS TO WANDER FOREVER BETWEEN THE WINDS, YOU GET IT REVEREND!!!!! COME ON BLANKETHEAD!! ( referring to Martin Pauley!!!)
I always sense the intense hatred he has for the Comanch! Then have to chuckle when he refers to Martin has Blankethead, as if saying and if you tick me off you might not have any eyes either!!!!!

By the way Smokey, FYI that line was windage and elevation Mrs. Langhorne, windage and elevation!!!

And on that note, from "The Undefeated", I like the dialog when he and Rock Hudson ride out to meet with the leader of the bandits. Duke asks Col. Langhorne if he has his holster " snapped or unsnapped! To which Hudson after warily looking down replys snapped! Duke sighs and says "well then I guess I'm his pidgeon" then shoots the bandit off his horse, and then for good measure shoots him again. When he returns to the safety of the wagons, Mrs Langhorne rushes up to him and says " You went out there to talk , why did you have to shoot the man!!! To which Duke calmly replys " THE CONVERSATION KINDA DRYED UP MAAM !!!!!

That little dialog cracks me up everytime!!

I think my favorite dialog would have to be in Big Jake when he is teaching his son to respet his elders or at least his betters.....You can call me Jake, you can call me Jacob, you can call me father or you can call me a Son of a Bitch but if you call me DADDY one more time and I'll finish this fight.....It may not be verbatim but is close...SaddleTramp...

I have a few. A couple of obvious ones first:

"Come see a fat old man some time."

"Fill your hand, you son of a bitch!"

"What in the blazes is a toy-letty?"

"What do you want me to do? Draw you a picture? Spell it out? Don't ever ask me! Long as you live, don't ever ask me more."

"Every time you turn around expect to see me. 'Cause one time you'll turn around and I'll be there, and I'll kill you, Matt."

"Woman of the house! Where's me tae?"

Lots of others.

One of my all time favorites comes from Sands of Iwo Jima

They are in the Fox hole and John Agar 9i think thats right) and John Wayne is listening to the GI call for him...John Agar says you cant just leave him there your going to have to shoot me (to stop him from going after him) And John wayne locks and loads his Rifle and says Thats just what ill do! The look on his face says it all...then they pan out and show him after this gets said and you can see misery on his face because one of his guys is out there hurt and he cant do anything about it.

"Fill your hand, you son of a bitch!"

and this is my all time favorite line!

Speaking of going out to meet the bandits another line comes from Chisum when the bandit leader says something like:

"Silver"
"No Silver"
"What did you bring"
"Just lead"

All those are great ones indeed, but one I like that I didnt see is from "The Shootist",

Hey guys I'm a new poster here and I am currently doing a project for a 1960's class at my high school and I am looking for famous lines from JW's westerns or war movies. Any favorite lines or a site where I can watch a clip of the line would be of tremendous help to me.

Thanks

hi Trevwt,

here are a few lines I hope It will help you with your project.

Ethan Edwards (The Searchers):
"That'll be the day."

U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn (True Grit):
"Well, it's the real article ... genuine double-rectified busthead, aged in the keg."

John T. Chance (Rio Bravo):
"Sorry don't get it done, Dude."

Sergeant John M. Stryker (Sands of Iwo Jima):
"A lot of guys make mistakes, I guess, but every one we make, a whole stack of chips goes with it. We make a mistake, and some guy don't walk away - forevermore, he don't walk away."

John Bernard Books (The Shootist):
"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I expect the same from them."

Ringo Kid (Stagecoach):
"Well, there are some things a man just can't run away from."

Hondo Lane (Hondo):
"I don't guess people's hearts got anything to do with a calendar."

Hondo Lane (Hondo):
"Yup. The end of a way of life. Too bad. It's a good way. Wagons forward! Yo!"

Capt. Rockwell Torrey (In Harm's Way):
"All battles are fought by scared men who'd rather be some place else."

Colonel Madden (Back to Bataan):
"This kind of war, you've gotta believe in what you're fighting for."

Tom Doniphon (The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance):
"Out here a man settles his own problems."

Duke Gifford (Operation Pacific):
"He was a good man. Make sure that it says so on the patrol report."

I think Duke's most famous line, was the first

Here's another one I like ...
From "The Comancheros" - Captain Jake Cutter (Wayne's role): "You think I'm simple minded." Paul Regret (Stuart Whitman's role): "Yes, I think you're simple minded." Cutter: "Well, don't make a point of saying it too often ... and once more would be too often!"
On paper, it doesn't have the effect that it has when Duke says it - he gave it bite and pizzazz playing Cutter.

"Son, I told you not to pet the dog but, you do what you want to do."

Also from Hondo.

"Walk around him." (scene where he has a bit of trouble with the kid's pa) "Quit blockin' the door." (Kicking out to the dog to make it move away from the front of the Cavalry Commanders tent.

From Fort Apache.

"Mounted in 4's!! that's suicide Colonel!!"
(Captain York, you are dismissed and are to take charge of the supply wagons. There is no room for cowards.)
[Whips his horse a few feet away from the Colonel taking off one of his gauntlets and throwing it to the ground.] "At your service sir."

Man, how do you decide which is the best? There's way too many. One that I really like, but didn't see mentioned here was from Chisum, when L.G. Murphy (Forrest Tucker) asks Chisum (Duke) to speak with him, and Duke replies, "Well I don't favor talkin' to vermin, but I'll make an exception just this once." But my all time favorite is from The Cowboys:

Wil Anderson (Duke): "All right! We've seen what you can do with a boy. How are ya when they come a little bigger?"

Asa Watts (Bruce Dern): "You mean you?"

Anderson: "Yeah. Why don't you have your boys just sit this one out."

Watts: "Oh, Mr. Anderson. You love to make it happen."

Anderson: "Ya havin' any of it?"

Watts: "Well, Mr. Anderson, you're a pretty old man."

Anderson: "Yep. 30 years older than you are. Had my back broke once, my hip twice, and on my worst day I could beat the hell outta you."

Watts: "I don't think so."

Anderson: "You will!" and Duke promptly belts Dern twice in the face before he can do anything!

Man that's just great! I had a situation once when I was in the local general store, and my wife and I watched a full grown man belt a little five year old kid when the kid bumped into him. I just couldn't hold back, and I hollered at him, "All Right! How are ya when they come a little bigger!" Don't know why I said that particular phrase. It just jumped right out of my mouth before I knew what I was doing. I was so pissed off (sorry about the language) at that guy, I think I probably would have fought him right there in the store. My wife and the store manager and a couple of other people got between us and he left. Someone called the sheriff on him though, so I'm sure he got his.

Well, enough of my ramblin'. I'll talk to y'all later.

Hi,
I have to go along with Jay, and I guess many others,

'THAT'LL BE THE DAY'

has to be the epitome of Duke,

So much so, as mentioned in another thread,

Hi

It not my absolute favourite I will need time to narrow that one down but this will do for starters. In a way I think it's quite profounf and when you got to the real John Wayne probably not to far from what he actually believed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
James Pepper: You know, there's an old saying, Miss Sally. There's no law west of Dodge and no God west of the Pecos. Right, Mr. Chisum?
John Simpson Chisum: Wrong, Mr. Pepper. Because no matter where people go, sooner or later there's the law. And sooner or later they find God's already been there.

Probably my favorite "line" is for something John didn't say but still expressed very plainly. And that was the nod or expression of approval the dying Duke showed to Gillom Rogers (Ron Howard) at the end of "The Shootist" when, after shooting the bartender, Gillom tossed away the gun, showing that he did not intend to follow in the footsteps of John Bernard Books by becoming a gunslinger.

Mods) i'll fix this later--C.

One of my all time favorites comes from Sands of Iwo Jima

They are in the Fox hole and John Agar (I think that's right) and John Wayne is listening to the GI call for him...John Agar says you can't just leave him there your going to have to shoot me (to stop him from going after him) And John wayne locks and loads his Rifle and says That's just what I'll do! The look on his face says it all...then they pan out and show him after this gets said and you can see misery on his face because one of his guys is out there hurt and he can't do anything about it.

This quote from Sands of Iwo Jima by member Sands of Iwo Jima is one of my favorites. It's not just the words, but the obvious emotion expressed that goes with it. He would hate shooting Agar's character as much as he hates hearing that other soldier calling out for help and not being able to help him.

"Young fella, if you're looking for trouble, I'll accommodate ya. Otherwise...leave it alone."

Gotta love that Rooster Cogburn.

And another instance of Duke's acting ability!

I have a quote question. Am I remembering this right, did Duke say in one of his movies a line "pick it up, go ahead I wish you would"? I just can't remember. I figured it would make a great ringtone for my phone.

Hello and welcome to the forum, snipsspins. Make yourself at home.

As for the film you are looking for? It is The Undefeated. The two men he hits are Government agents looking to cheat Duke's character out of some cash the Government offered him for his horses. I always loved that scene myself.

The last words spoken by Duke in a movie.

The Shootist,
in the the bar, to the bar tender, before the shoot-out.

Good Morning sir,
This is my Birthday,
give me the best in the house.
(Yes Sir)
Thank you sir

Hi,
to new member steve who posted this question in the wrong place.
I have welcomed steve on the dedicated thread.

hi im new to this site. Im hoping somebody can tell me the movie where JW says
" One grenade will get you all " or something like that?
I know that this is more of a question but this is the only thing i can think
of to get an answer.I'll be your
best friend forever & ever & ever

Steve,
I can't find this quote anywhere,
without re-playing the likely movies!
If Duke did indeed say this
it would be my guess it would be,
Sands of Iwo Jima

However, maybe one of our members, knows for certain!
