View Full Version : The Duke on Radio
chester7777 June 10th, 2003, 10:49 AM Howdy, all!
I heard somewhere that the Duke actually did several radio shows and that they may be available on tape somewhere. Do any of you know anything about this?
Thanks!
Chester
AEC23 June 10th, 2003, 11:03 AM I downloaded two radio shows. One is She wore and yellow ribbon and the other is Red River. They are from an old show called Lux Radio Theater. The sponser was Lux soap. They are pretty cool, about an hour long, and still have the original comercials in them.
itdo June 10th, 2003, 11:27 AM that's right. He also did a radio version of Stagecoach, the show was even introduced by John Ford. It's available on LP and is sometimes offered on Ebay, not tooooo expensive
(just checked, one is on right now: here's the item number: Item # 2536239597)
Especially interesting I find the curtain calls when the announcer asks some personal questions. JW certainly showed great talent for these Live shows.
The Lux Shows are available on a special CD set with several other shows, also including My Darling Clementine, The Plainsman, Shane, and others - look at Ebay, I found mine there in new condition.
The casting of the radio shows is especially interesting. While they always got the star of the original film, they sometimes had to assemble a different cast. In the radio show of Yellow Ribbon for instance Mel Ferrer is playing John Agar's original role.
AEC23 June 10th, 2003, 12:19 PM Thanks, itdo. You always have such great info. I have never seen that Stagecoach LP. That would be really neat to have. I too, really liked the radio shows and how they were done.
itdo June 10th, 2003, 12:23 PM the one currently on Ebay is really a bargain for less than 4 bucks. Those LPs get rarer by the day but nobody seems to be collecting them anymore. It's a shame (especially because my own collection would probably be worth less because of that). There is another Stagecoach radio version on the B-side of this LP - with Randy Scott in the Wayne role. Just imagine...
Hondo H June 20th, 2003, 01:55 PM Chester
I have a copy of Hondo and Fort Apache on cassette. I have seen others but have not picked anything else up. I live just outside the Metro Atlanta area in GA. There is a restaurant chain here and in several other Southern States called The Cracker Barrel. There is a country store in each one. They have a rack with old radio shows on cassette. There are also cassettes of abridged audio from some of the old Duke Westerns. I will see if I can locate the cassttes this weekend. If I do I'll get you the company name and address. Or if you like, You can email me at
hhowa01@emory.edu with an address. I will pick one up and send it to you.
baron von Rassilon June 26th, 2003, 12:04 AM Greetings all!
The only info I have found is 4 Radio Programs starring John Wayne. They are;
Stagecoach
Red River (I have)
Fort Apache
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon ( I have)
All are about an hour long with the original commercials. A great way to listen to John Wayne while jogging, in your car or doing housework and not having to watch the boob tube!
I am looking for the other two also.
As soon as I can get my CD-R working, I would gladly record them on CD for any one of you who would like to collect them. I will have to tell you that they are in MP3 format, so make sure whatever you listen to CDs with can play it. Your computer should have no problem at all with Real Player or Windows Media Player.

chester7777 June 27th, 2003, 10:51 AM Hondo H, thanks so much for the offer! It seems that most of the cassette players around here have either died or disappeared, so at this time I wouldn't be able to listen to them :( .
Baron, I, for one, would be interested in getting a copy when circumstances and time allow. I know my computer is capable of playing MP3 files, so that should work. Keep me posted.

Yeah, I first had "America, Why I love Her" on cassette back in the late 70's. I wore it out listening to it. You can now purchase it on cassette or CD at www.amozon.com. I have a few of his tracks on MP3 on my computer to listen to. Its worth having.
