View Full Version : Following In Dukes Footsteps
Robbie February 10th, 2006, 06:50 PM Hi Kevin
I know this issue has been raised before but just to be completely akward I thought I'd raise it again. :)
The board is growing at a rapid pace and its good to see, however a lot of members are using the names of characters Duke played and very soon it will get confusing.
Of course we all know who HondoDukeLane and Chance are on the message board but if a few more register with similar names and become prominent at posting it will get confusing.
Can a mechanism be imposded preventing people from using the names of character Duke played in oder to minimise confusion.
Thanks in advance
Robbie.

Bek February 11th, 2006, 02:09 AM Just a suggestion, but maybe if you limit staff to having character names, that's what happens on most of the boards i go on.
chester7777 February 12th, 2006, 02:24 AM So far it's not been too much of a problem. Most people that post a lot, you get to know them pretty well, and they often use a first name.
However, one thing we talked about was weeding out those members who have been inactive for a specific period of time (I don't remember exactly what that time is), and delete their account, thus releasing some of the character names for others to use.
One of the reasons for Kevin's email around the end of last year was to give folks an opportunity to re-visit the message board, to weed out the "dead wood" (no offense intended  ).
Thanks for bringing this back up, Robbie, and for your thoughts, Bek!

Robbie February 18th, 2006, 03:59 PM Hi Chester
Thanks for that post, are inactive members with no posts actually going to be deleted, I've been waiting for this for some time, I think it will be a good move if it happens.

chester7777 February 18th, 2006, 05:09 PM I should Qualify this with the fact that is Kevins decision, He is considering that, though.

dukefan1 February 19th, 2006, 03:25 AM I can understand those who may feel that the people who joined but don't post might be tying up names others might use, but how can you tell if they visited once or twice and then stopped coming, or if they are visiting sometimes to check up on their reading about John Wayne? I use to post more often when I first started coming to this board, but took to just reading the posts and not joining in the discussions for a while, though I still stopped in every day. I felt under-knowledgeable in allot of the topics being discussed and didn't want to look stupid. I realized how foolish that was, got out of that feeling and started posting again. But there may be others who get great enjoyment out of the topics and people here but don't feel ready or feel the need to join in yet. If there was a way to tell if members don't show up anymore, then feel free to drop them from the membership list. But I wouldn't want to see anyone lose their place if they do stop in from time to time. Just my input on this subject. :D

Hi Mark
Thanks for your post, and it is one, that I consider very valid.
There is no need, for anyone to feel, silly, and lacking in knowledge.
Not one of us is a complete knowledge of Duke,
and we all learn from one another.
I am sure all of us, learn something everyday,
and joining in the discussions, is the only way.
To my knowledge, I have never known anyone,
made to look 'silly', as this is not the nature of our members.
So please, join in as often as you like, and have fun.
I hope if any other members, who feel the same,
and read this, also, come back and join in,
Best Wishes, Mark,
Bek February 19th, 2006, 03:59 AM Also you can tell if the members have been here, because in their profile it has when they were last active. Hope this helps dukefan1.
