View Full Version : Tommy Morrison Was He A Relative Of The Duke
DukePilgrim February 11th, 2006, 07:10 AM I remember reading somewhere that Tommy Morrison who starred in Rocky V as the young boxer was some kind of relative of John Wayne nephew or great nephew.
Was this true or some PR material?

dukefan1 February 11th, 2006, 07:18 AM Hello DukePilgrim.
From what I heard, he is a great nephew of Duke's. How he ties in by who's blood, I never heard. I remember hearing that he contracted Aids and had to give up boxing. That's all I remember. Maybe someone else knows more. Hope this helps a little. :D

ethanedwards February 11th, 2006, 07:20 AM Hi Mike,
Here's a link to his web-site,
He is known as The Duke,
so perhaps there is a family connection,
although, I can't find anything that says so,
which is odd!!

DukePilgrim February 11th, 2006, 12:40 PM Hi Mark & Keith
I remember the time the movie came out that he was being quoted as being a great nephew but never heard anymore about him after that.
Thanks
Mike
Baby Sister February 11th, 2006, 05:15 PM When the movie Rocky V came out I remember People magazine ran an article on him and the fact that he is John Waynes' great grand nephew was in this article. The blood line runs on Tommies fathers side. His name was Tim Morrison. This is all mentioned in his bio on answers.com and also in John Waynes' on the same site. Hope this helps.
I saw Tommie box a couple of times and he was really good.

chester7777 February 11th, 2006, 05:42 PM From the picture on the Internet site, it looks like he could be related to John Wayne, in that he has a similar receding hairline pattern  .
Seriously, I remembered that we had had some minor discussion regarding Tommy Morrison about 3 years ago, and here are links to those posts (or threads) -
pertinent post by itdo (http://www.dukewayne.com/post2986-5.html)
first three posts are relavent (http://www.dukewayne.com/showthread.php?p=7625)
Thanks, Keith, for that link! Interesting reading!

DukePilgrim February 13th, 2006, 04:43 PM Thanks Chester for the links.
I thought he was a grandnephew.
Funny the only Rocky film I ever saw in the cinema was number 5 (V) with Tommy in it.

Well supposedly he no longer has aids and plans on returning to boxing. Anybody else heard this?

I saw on ESPN that he fought a Meanest Man Cage match last Saturday night 06/23 on The Res Arizona and knocked his opponent out in 2:08 of the first round.
If you want to know more just go to www.espn.com (http://www.espn.com) and type in Tommy Morrison in the search field. A good bit of controversy going on.
DukePilgrim July 1st, 2007, 07:30 AM Well if he no longer has AIDS he will be a first!!!. Can see him ever getting a licence to box anyway and he would be way too old now

Ain't it the truth? I've never heard of AIDS spontaneously disappearing on its own.
DukePilgrim July 1st, 2007, 05:00 PM There was a guy in a TV soap opera over here whose character lived for decades with it.
They had to remind the audience every so often when he got a new girlfriend that there might be a few technical problems to his love life.
I bet it seemed a good idea in early 1980s to give his character HIV:stunned:

I don't know if anybody read back from the beginning of this thread, but when I did, I discovered that my links above were no longer working, as a result of changing over to the new message board last December. I was able to find the correct information, so the links work now.
gt, who is doing the interview in that YouTube clip? Some interesting stuff. I wonder how valid it is when he says that the testing 10 years ago wasn't that good. Does he mean that he had a false positive?? That would be pretty bad, and have a serious affect on a person's life.

gt12pak July 3rd, 2007, 05:12 PM Hi Chester.
I was beginning to think that nobody was gonna look at that clip. I was just fooling around on youtube and came across that clip. As far as who did the interview, I have no idea. But anyway, the person who made the clip is someone called VERSUSvsTV. If you go to youtube, type in Tommy Morrison and scroll down to the clip I posted, you can click on his screen name and there are different clips ranging from World Extreme Cagefighting, to Chuck Norris to hunting and fishing.
Hope this helps. GT

Aww, GT, just 'cause we didn't comment doesn't mean we didn't look  . I looked at it yesterday but didn't think of anything to comment on at that time. I see he won in the second round by an interview taken after the fight. Not bad for a man out of the sport for 12 or so years. I remember watching him fight years ago. While he did have power, I didn't think he had a fluid movement in the ring. He was more of a brawler than a boxer. I hope he makes it back, I'd watch him fight again.
As for the false aids reading he received? Too bad he was out of control in his private life or he could have fought it and had a longer career then he did. Glad to hear he is healthy now and has his life on track again. I wish him luck!

gt12pak July 5th, 2007, 07:50 PM dukefan1, you're poking fun at me aren't you? That's okay, I'm having fun with this too.
dukefan1 July 6th, 2007, 06:31 AM Of course I'm funning with you, GT! I enjoyed the clip and was glad you posted it over here. I search on youtube all the time, but didn't see this clip. Thanks for sharing it.

Tommy Morrison had HIV, not AIDS. He now claims he was misdiagnosed, but some people believe he still has it.
