You know, when you read around a lot, you come upon many little known facts. Again, Sheriff Art of the McCandles Texas spread at Yahoo does a great job of giving us a history lesson and then interweaves interesting trivia about JW movies as well. In particular, we share here some insights from She Wore A Yellow Ribbon .

Chester

ABOUT YELLOW RIBBONS:

Wearing ribbons is nothing new. During the Civil War it was common for a woman whose husband or beau had gone off to war, to wear a ribbon of a color reflecting the branch of service he served in. I only know a few of the colors myself, red was for infantry and yellow for cavalry. This tradition continued well into the last part of the 19th Century. So when Lt. Flint Cohill (John Agar) asked if 2nd Lt. Ross Penell (Harry Carey Jr) had given Olivia Dandridge (Joanne Dru) his yellow ribbon, now you know why it is so important. I hope you find this interesting.

HERE ARE SOME GOOFS FOR YELLOW RIBBON: (Look for them the next time
you watch the film.)

Anachronism: The film says that news of the Battle of Little Big Horn (1876) was spread by the Pony Express -- which went out of business in 1861.

Anachronism: Custer died on July 25, 1876. Therefore, the calendar
page that Capt. Brittles uses to mark off the days until his retirement is for the wrong month. The calendar depicts a 31 day month that begins on Wednesday. March 1876 is the only month in 1876, with 31 days, that starts on Wednesday.

I hope you enjoyed the trivia and the article.

See you along the trail,

Art

As a retired milatary 1SG, and military history buff I can tear apart just about any military movie.."Flying Leathernecks" as an example. John Waynes squadron is flying Grumman F6F Hellcats which you can see the Orange Navy Reserve bands painted over, and they refer to the Hellcats as F4F Wildcats. Further the close ups of the Japanese pilots are in F6F cockpits not A6M5 or what ever version of the Zero. But who cares..after all its a John Wayne action movie.

My sentiments exactly! I don't care, but sometimes it is fun to find out about these things, just not obsess about them.

Robbie,

We simply gave credit to the place where we originally read the information, the McCandles Texas forum at Yahoo. We don't have time to double check everything that is said there. So far, everything we've found there has been very interesting, and accurate as near as we can tell. It seems well researched.

You are right, it seems that info is available from IMdB. We have often offered information here, that we have gotten from that source, and not always given credit.

The information posted was not necessarily being passed off as Sheriff Art's personal knowledge. He is a researcher by trade, John Wayne enthusiast by passion. He is simply sharing information he has amassed over time.

IMdB information is publicly available on the Internet, and I don't feel that they have been cheated in any way, since no one is making a profit or anything like that. I am not aware that the information they offer is copyrighted in any way (and I could be wrong about that).

"Mrs." Chester

P.S. Please don't mention to Chester that I've been posting while he's at work. ;)
