You know, when you read around a lot, you come upon many little known facts. Again, Sheriff Art of the McCandles Texas spread at Yahoo does a great job of giving us a history lesson and then interweaves interesting trivia about JW movies as well. In particular, we share here some insights from She Wore A Yellow Ribbon .
Chester
ABOUT YELLOW RIBBONS:
Wearing ribbons is nothing new. During the Civil War it was common for a woman whose husband or beau had gone off to war, to wear a ribbon of a color reflecting the branch of service he served in. I only know a few of the colors myself, red was for infantry and yellow for cavalry. This tradition continued well into the last part of the 19th Century. So when Lt. Flint Cohill (John Agar) asked if 2nd Lt. Ross Penell (Harry Carey Jr) had given Olivia Dandridge (Joanne Dru) his yellow ribbon, now you know why it is so important. I hope you find this interesting.
HERE ARE SOME GOOFS FOR YELLOW RIBBON: (Look for them the next time
you watch the film.)
Anachronism: The film says that news of the Battle of Little Big Horn (1876) was spread by the Pony Express -- which went out of business in 1861.
Anachronism: Custer died on July 25, 1876. Therefore, the calendar
page that Capt. Brittles uses to mark off the days until his retirement is for the wrong month. The calendar depicts a 31 day month that begins on Wednesday. March 1876 is the only month in 1876, with 31 days, that starts on Wednesday.
I hope you enjoyed the trivia and the article.
See you along the trail,
