itdo June 26th, 2003, 04:58 AM Hi Danny!
Greetings to Holland! Have been up there a couple of times, always enjoyed your beautiful country, and there are a couple of collectors there that I know, nice guys. As to your poll which one of the Wayne films is "best", I always like to make a difference between:
Which is MY favourite (because, the favourite doesn't have to be the best in cinematic terms, does it?) and which one should be the best depending on its meaning in film history, etc.
So there's my dilemma! Because the fondest feelings I have for The Alamo for different personal reasons. Yet in a list of the "Best" I would probably have The Searchers, Red River and Yellow Ribbon above the others (although this list changes from time to time).
Roland
PS: English ain't my mothertongue either, so don't care about our mistakes too much.
;)
dukefan1 June 26th, 2003, 07:28 AM Welcome aboard, Danny. English is my first and only language and I tend to butcher it all to heck, myself sometimes. I think The Searchers and Red River are 2 of Duke's best movies. You will find that there will be many different favorites for different people. It is hard to point to one as a favorite. dukefan1
smokey June 26th, 2003, 08:14 AM hi danny,

baron von Rassilon June 26th, 2003, 09:21 AM Greetings Danny! Glad to have you with us. And Danny, your English is just fine.
My favorite JW movie is "They Were Expendable" & "North To Alaska".
B)
Araner June 26th, 2003, 10:44 AM My favorite JW movie is The Quiet Man. I think the best JW movie is Red River. I think the best acting job turned in by JW was The Seachers.
Hondo Duke Lane June 26th, 2003, 05:03 PM Hey Danny,
Great to have you on board. You are beyond your years and we're glad to have you on board. This is world wide and we are here to enjoy each other and our favorite person, John Wayne.
I picked "The Quiet Man" as my favorite movie. I really like the others listed, and I am so glad to get to see his movies on VHS and DVD.
You said that you know almost all his movies, and are collecting them on DVD. How many do you have right now?
Thanks for the poll and your insight. Looking forward to many days of insightful posts from you.
Cheers, Hondo B)
JWfan June 27th, 2003, 02:50 AM hi Hondo,
I have on DVD 14 movies: Blue Steel, The Desert Trail, The Lucky Texan, The Angel and The badman, The Searchers, Rio Bravo, The Alamo, The Man who shot Liberty Valance, The Sons of Katie Elder, El Dorado, True Grit, The Cowboys and The Shootist. And 1 war movie The Longest Day
On VHS I have much of his older movies like: The Undefeated, Chisum, Big Jake and Cahill: United States marshall.
And I have recorded on this moment 29 movies, when I was 5 I always looked the cavalry trilogy expecially Fort Apache and other movies like The War wagon, The Comancheros and The Horse Soldiers.
But my father has recorded over those movies, that was something that I doesn't like but some of those movies I have recorded again.
Also I collecting postcards of John Wayne and posters but still I haven't found any posters.
Excuse me If my English is not so good.
Jwfan.
Robbie June 27th, 2003, 08:13 PM Hi Danny
Its nice to hear that people in Holland also like Johns movies. My favourite movie of all time is the Searchers I think that it is a unique movie. You mentioned having Blue Steel on DVD without giving too much about the movie away is it any good and why? Thanks

stacy June 27th, 2003, 10:20 PM Yikes!
That is a hard one, because I don't have 1 I have several favorites! And on your poll, you have several that are on my list. The Quite Man, Rio Bravo, and The Alamo.
Out of those I would probably pick The Quite Man, but they are all good ones.
And of course I have many that were not on your poll!
Thanks for doing the poll, these are always fun, and I enjoy sharing!
Stacy :D
AEC23 June 29th, 2003, 12:01 PM My all time favorite is and has been for a long time The Quiet Man. I love the story. I love the romance and the chemistry between Sean and Mary Kate. I love the fight scenes, and the comedy. I love the scenery of Ireland, and the soundtrack is excellent too. I've been surprised that Hollywood hasn't tried to remake this one yet.
BrianB July 2nd, 2003, 05:41 PM I have to go with the Shootist

ZS_Maverick March 10th, 2004, 09:07 AM My favorites are his action/westerns. He always did intelligent action films (as opposed to all the idiotic action films we get today) My favorites are, in no particular order, "RIO BRAVO", "THE COMANCHEROS" "SONS OF KATIE ELDER" "TRUE GRIT", "CHISUM", "BIG JAKE", "ROOSTER COGBURN", and "THE DARK COMMAND", as well as his more dramatic Westerns, "STAGECOACH", "RED RIVER", "THE SEARCHERS", and "THE SHOOTIST". Of course being a Texan I like "THE ALAMO" and finally I like "FORT APACHE" because the Indians got to win a battle for a change!
chester7777 March 11th, 2004, 07:56 PM ZS_Maverick,
WELCOME to the John Wayne Message Board, the very best of its kind on the Internet! If you are looking to hang out with some died-in-the-wool Duke fans, you have found the right place.
I'd say you have a nice list of favorites there. If you are like many here on the board, your number one film can change periodically, depending on which one you've seen most recently, or what mood you're in :D .
I haven't seen too many JW movies that I think are bad, but that is covered in another topic on the board.
Chester :newyear:
William T Brooks October 2nd, 2004, 11:07 AM The Duke at his best "The Shootist"! Chilibill
The Ringo Kid October 16th, 2004, 04:42 PM :cowboy: For me it is impossible to choose just one favorite -- sorry.
The Ringo Kid.
SXViper November 1st, 2004, 11:04 PM My most favorite John Wayne movie would be a tie between The Searchers and Rio Bravo. Both movies actually moved the western even farther ahead as a main stream genre. Stagecoach broke the mold but, these 2 movies took and raised the bar.
arthurarnell November 2nd, 2004, 02:50 AM Hi
My Favourite has to be The Quiet Man, Surprised to see Red River got only one vote, but at least it made the list.
Regards
Arthur
larrybusch November 8th, 2004, 01:52 PM  I have a soft spot for RIO LOBO, I just love to see him with Jack Elam, and I like the music in the movie, too.
Larry
The Ringo Kid November 11th, 2004, 04:02 PM :cowboy: I take that back, I could possibly have a favorite JW movie. Fort Apache gets the spot.
Close alternates are Allegheny Uprising, Rio Grande, Hondo, Sands of Iwo Jima, Back To Bataan, Stagecoach and The Green Berets. Not necessarily in this order.
Phantomstranger December 8th, 2004, 08:18 PM The greatest western of all time will always be "The Searchers"
GW McLintock May 28th, 2005, 08:40 PM McLintock!
InHarmsWay June 2nd, 2005, 11:40 AM The Searchers.
ZACK613 June 2nd, 2005, 11:51 AM MY FAVORITES ARE THE CAVARLRY TRILOGY, SAND OF IWO JIMA, THE ALAMO, FLYING LEATHERNECKS, JUST TO NAME A FEW. I ALSO LOVE AMERICA WHY I LOVE HER (OF COURSE THAT IS NOT A MOVIE) I ALSO REALLY ENJOYING DUKE'S RADIO WORK RIGHT NOW
Jay J. Foraker June 2nd, 2005, 12:04 PM I'm slipping - I missed this topic too!!! :headbonk: :headbonk:
My favorite JW movie is "The Quiet Man," which gave the Duke a role that was quite offbeat from what he had done before. But he took it and made gold out of it. Besides, he was joined by a strong cast that made this movie so enjoyable. I can watch this one time and time again.
Cheers - Jay :D
ethanedwards June 4th, 2005, 07:14 PM I know it got knocked and all that,
but I just love THE ALAMO,
especially the full 200+ minute version,
I really enjoy the whole evening taken up
watching and even listening to the pre, intermission and end music,
Duke should have got more credit for this one!!
stephenadarglas June 5th, 2005, 09:43 AM Hi all
'She wore a yellow ribbon - i've been to monument valley - its breathless!!!!!!!!!
Joel Weisvogel June 7th, 2005, 07:20 AM This is a tough one, however ultimately I have to go with THE SEARCHERS.

Maudy June 7th, 2005, 09:06 PM Well Hello All!!
Of course my favorite is Eldorado, but it really is hard to pick because as has been said before they are all great !! I have different reasons for loving each one. She Wore A Yello Ribbon was the last one I watched with my Father -in-Law the night he died (He incidently is the one who introduced me to The Duke's movies).
But nothing beats the fight scenes and the chase scenes in McLintock!
Of course, when Rooster Cogburn hollers out "Fill your hands you Son-of-a-Bitch!" I just want to scream YeeeeeeeeHawwwwwww.
By now you can tell I am nuts about him!! :D
Lil' Gipper July 8th, 2005, 12:49 PM My favorite changes about once a week. El Dorado, Rio Bravo, Big Jake, Rooster Cogburn, etc.... This week, I'd have to go with The Searchers - according to Steven Speilberg, the greatest movie ever made.
Cole Thornton August 3rd, 2005, 07:23 AM I'm always floored by how everyone gushes over The Quiet Man. I fel it's entirely overrated, but I will also admit that I have warmed up to it in recent years. Maybe the onslaught of gray hairs (at age 33 no less!) on my once-blonde head has made me more sentimental...and don't even get me started on Rio Bravo!;) Ah well, to each his/her own...
Anyway, since it was my top Duke movie for ten years, I voted El Dorado...
Senta August 15th, 2005, 01:32 PM I'm really can't name my favorite film, because they are so different and each of them are dear to me with different feelings. I like films directed by Ford, but latly I saw a few times with my friends Eldorado and Rio Bravo - they are great. One of my last favorites is In the Harms Way.
Senta
thesherrif August 23rd, 2005, 04:42 PM Hello
I had to pick El Dorado. Although it's always tough to pick a favorite in
any of these polls!!!!!
etphoto August 29th, 2005, 09:23 PM My favorite wasn't on there (Big Jake) so I had to pick the something else. I agree with what others have said though. It is hard to pick.

Moonshine_Sally September 25th, 2005, 09:06 AM The Quiet man definately.I've watched it a 1000 times(or so it seems ;) )
Though Angel and the Badman is also wonderful and North to Alaska.Oh to be honest any John Wayne film will keep me quiet :P
mikec1010 September 1st, 2006, 01:51 AM These are all good but I can't believe The Searchers wasn't on this list. I think this was Wayne's best role. He was dark and brooding yet at the same time he is redeemed at the end. Awesome work.
Dukette December 29th, 2006, 07:52 AM My favorite JW movie of all time is Hatari. Because it was original & unlike his other movies. I love the animals. I also love The Quiet Man, Sons of Katie Elder, In Harms Way and pretty much everything he has done.
DukePilgrim December 29th, 2006, 08:09 AM How can you choose 1 film!!!!!
I think the films were John Wayne was his best and the most enjoyable roles to watch again and again are
The Searchers, Red River, True Grit and Sands of Iwo Jima.
I also have a love for Brannigan and Mc Q I just wish Duke had done some more detective cop movies.
Mike
Dukette December 29th, 2006, 08:31 AM I agree with you Mike. I can't pick just one. I guess I choose Hatari because it is what made my son a JW fan. My son loves animals as I do. I loved the detective shows McQ and Brannigan. I have Brannigan on DVD. I can't find McQ in local stores. I will have to find it online. I wonder why he didn't do more shows like that as well.
DukePilgrim December 29th, 2006, 08:39 AM Hi Dukette
When you think about it Hatari is really an one off in terms of John wayne movies. I cant think of a movie he did that was anyway like it.
Henry Mancini's music is so haunting and The Baby Elephant sequence at the end is a hoot.
Mike
Dukette December 29th, 2006, 09:22 AM Hi Mike,
I love the monkey catching scene where they are wearing any kind of gear they can to protect themselves. The bird cages for head gear. The friendships shown in that movie and the comedy really made that film. I think perhaps the Duke wanted to make afilm about his african safari trips. What do you think?
batjac January 5th, 2007, 05:22 PM Danny,
I just love Angel and the Badman. Duke and Gail Russell have such chemistry. Plus with Harry Carey, Sr. Duke’s cowboy inspiration and the fact it was “a John Wayne production” make it something special.
Duke the Dog
ethanedwards January 5th, 2007, 06:09 PM Amongst many others, I say The Alamo
Robbie January 5th, 2007, 07:13 PM Keith
I have to admit that I am really warming to the Alamo and I am begining to appreciate a little more what the actually achieved.
:agent:
bopoppa February 6th, 2007, 08:52 PM I have had to think and rethink and actually change my answer on this. Big Jake. My first John Wayne experience that I can remember and for some reason, it just seems to bring everything together.
Bo
Stumpy March 13th, 2007, 07:38 AM "Rio Bravo"
DukePilgrim March 20th, 2007, 03:33 AM Red River was a film that knocked your socks off. Hell of a performance
Mike
Lt. Brannigan April 24th, 2007, 10:59 PM I voted for the Quiet Man, that movie has everything I have come to expect from a good movie and it's the standard to which I measure everything else.
Senta June 20th, 2007, 04:36 AM I think The Searchers is the best, but surprisingly it wasn't at the list.
Regards,
Senta
TJTBIKER April 13th, 2009, 09:10 AM Best duke movie of all time is rio bravo
stagecoach50 July 8th, 2009, 02:57 PM I like McClintock, and The Quiet Man pure JW and Maureen.
Andy
Elly July 11th, 2009, 06:34 PM TRUE GRIT
then everything else!
oliver13 August 2nd, 2009, 06:36 PM Hi Danny, I think the Dukes greatest movie is The Searchers. I think he gives his finest performance portraying a very complex troubled character.
ShortGrub August 3rd, 2009, 03:20 AM The Searchers, with the 3 Godfathers, and one always overlooked Big Jim McLain close behind.
yomper November 6th, 2011, 01:18 AM The Undefeated
lastjwfan November 29th, 2011, 09:57 AM I picked Mclintock but i LOVE the searchers and red river! WHO am i kidding i love all his movies!
wtrayah November 29th, 2011, 04:21 PM Hard to say which one was best! He made some great ones! Out of that list i would say RED RIVER.
Gorch November 30th, 2011, 03:25 PM "The Searchers" does it for me. Subtle, suspenseful, heartbreaking, humorous and epic. It does have some of Ford's crappy lowlife comedy and an embarrassing performance by Ken Curtis but everything else, especially Wayne, are world class.
We deal in lead, friend.
Levitt E. Valance February 24th, 2012, 11:00 AM I'd have voted for The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, but since it ain't listed, I voted for Rio Bravo.
