View Full Version : Whats John Wayne's Best War Movie JWfan June 26th, 2003, 11:31 AM Hi all, whats John Wayne's best war movie? I think It is The sands of Iwo Jima or The longest day Jwfan stacy June 26th, 2003, 03:09 PM Hi, I think John Wayne has some really good war movies too, and between the ones on your list I like, In Harms Way, The Fighting Seabeas, and The Flying Tigers. You know I had seen Reunion in France not to long ago, and it is a pretty good movie, but it doesn't have enough of John Wayne in the movie to suit me. Stacy Hondo Duke Lane June 26th, 2003, 03:53 PM JWfan, Welcome to the board, and a very good subject. I picked "The Fighting Seabees" as my choice of best war movies you listed, but you left out the one I really liked the best. "Sands of Iwo Jima" is my favorite war movie. But they are all good, and this is a good list. Cheers B) Araner June 26th, 2003, 05:18 PM Of the ones listed, I'd go with In Harm's Way. Of all JW's war movies, I'd prefer The Sands of Iwo Jima. Araner smokey June 27th, 2003, 07:32 AM hi, you forgot to include operation pacific so i picked out of the list you set good idea keep them coming cheers smokey BrianB July 2nd, 2003, 02:19 AM All of his war movies were good. But as a Retired infantryman I would have to say "The Green Berets" because of the anti-war movement during Vietnam, and the Dukes great love for this country and the support he gave to our servicemen during that "Police Action". Brian Tulalip Wa Monique July 9th, 2003, 01:29 PM I picked They Were Expendable, How could you forget The Sands of Iwo Jima? Shame on you :P Monique ;) baron von Rassilon July 9th, 2003, 11:39 PM Here's my list: 1 The Longest Day 2 They Were Expendable 3 The Horse Soldiers (Civil War) 4 Back to Bataan 5 The Long Voyage Home (Yup, it's a war picture) 6 Sands of Iwo Jima 7 The Alamo 8 The Fighting Seabees 9 Reunion In France 10 Operation Pacific B) Chell July 15th, 2003, 06:53 AM Sands of Iwo Jima Big Jim July 16th, 2003, 05:41 PM The Green Berets, without a doubt. He made an excellent movie about a very unpopular war. I just got this one on DVD and can't watch it enough. Big Jim Marysville WA Chris Maude July 18th, 2003, 01:59 AM definately sands of iwo jima another movie were he dies at the end but his company make it to the top and raise the stars and stripes. gw_mclintock July 21st, 2003, 11:32 AM Without question, it has to be The Sands of Iwo Jima! IMO I love the toughness that Sgt. John Stryker portrays. Todd InHarmsWay April 30th, 2004, 10:49 PM lol,In Harms way..i have actually sat down one day and watched that movie back to back to BACK 9true story ) :P.CLOSELY followed by the longest day,the fighting seabee's,sands of iwoa jima and she wore a yellow ribbon. gary19 September 7th, 2004, 05:39 AM How did the "Flying Leathernecks" and "Operation: Pacific" not make the list. Those are my two favorites. :uhuh2: chester7777 September 7th, 2004, 08:26 AM gary19, Welcome to the John Wayne Message Board, the best of its kind on the 'Net! I have no idea how I could have missed this this poll the first time around, but apparently I did, because I hadn't voted in it, and I am sure I wouldn't have missed an opportunity to give my favorite John Wayne movie of all time, They Were Expendable, a vote. It doesn't make too many lists. As to how JWfan might have left a few choices out of his poll, he is one our youngest members, 15 years old (he was 14 when he put together that poll). He is a young man from Holland, and as you can see, he had a real good time making polls for us. So, again, welcome, and we hope to see you around here again! Chester :newyear: (and the Mrs. :angel1: says "Howdy!" too) arthurarnell September 7th, 2004, 12:16 PM Hi I voted for the fighting Seabees, and would have even if Sands of Iwo Jima Had been there but it might have been close. The SDea Chase wasn't a bad picture but possibly not in the same league as his all action films such as They Were Expendable and The longest Day, but I agree it is hard to pick one from many good films. Regards Arthur William T Brooks October 2nd, 2004, 11:38 AM I finally got around to voting in all of these Polls. As a pilot of over 55 years I had to voted for "Flying Tigers", and what do you know this is my 400th post!!!! Chilibill :cowboy: :cowboy: :cowboy: :cowboy: The Ringo Kid October 16th, 2004, 04:48 PM I had to choose Back To Bataan because I am a big fan of not only The Duke but of Anthony Quinn and Paul Fix, both who are in that movie too. :cowboy: TRK. Emmanuel May 24th, 2005, 01:40 AM it's not on the list, but I'd have to go for "SANDS OF IWO JIMA". From the others I'd go for "IN HARM'S WAY". Emmanuel. .............................. I'll try one of those black beers....THE QUIET MAN. SXViper May 24th, 2005, 09:28 PM I voted for "In Harms Way" from what is listed, but, I also am partial to "Operation Pacific". ZACK613 June 2nd, 2005, 10:33 AM NO QUESTION, I THINK SANDS OF IWO JIMA IS #1 DUKE WAR PICK. IT MADE A GREAT DOUBLE BILL WITH CLINT EASTWOODS'S HEARTBREAK RIDGE FOR ME ON MEMORIAL DAY ethanedwards June 2nd, 2005, 11:26 AM i thought Duke's best one was SANDS OF IWO JIMA but I also, thought THE LONGEST DAY was well done, although he wasn't in it very long, the way the film was edited, it looked like he starred all the way through it!! Jay J. Foraker June 2nd, 2005, 11:54 AM Somehow I missed this - I would have to say "In Harm's Way" would be my favorite JW war movie with "The Sands of Iwo Jima" running a close second. Cheers - Jay :D ZACK613 June 2nd, 2005, 12:01 PM Originally posted by gary19@Sep 7 2004, 06:39 AM How did the "Flying Leathernecks" and "Operation: Pacific" not make the list. I ENJOY DUKE AND WARD BOND VERY MUCH. erscolo June 11th, 2005, 01:41 AM Add my vote for Sands of Iwo Jima and They Were Expendable. Thanks also for the heads up as to why Sands of Iwo Jima wasn't on the list....I am sure I would still miss quite a few films if I were to put a list together for a poll. Roger. Senta August 16th, 2005, 03:38 AM I voted for In Harms Way - it is one of my favorites amoung Wayne films. Moonshine_Sally September 25th, 2005, 09:11 AM My fave wasn't there!I go for The Flying Leathernecks Patrick October 15th, 2005, 02:50 PM Off that list, I'll say They Were Expendable, followed closely by Back to Bataan. But my favorite Duke movie, which I'm not sure is a western or a war movie, is The Alamo, the uncut version. I'd love to see a dvd of that version instead of the 160 minute dvd that is available now. Panhandle April 9th, 2006, 11:04 AM Of whats listed "They Were Expendable" My favorite is "Sands Of Iwo Jima" "Saddle up" 26mod May 16th, 2006, 10:03 PM Sands of Iwo Jima would have got my vote. But I voted for The Green Berets, as it was the war my father served two tours there. cchoate May 17th, 2006, 04:00 PM Greetings Everyone, This is my first posting. My favorite war movie is In Harm's Way. The photography captures a sense of realism that makes me feel like I'm right there in the same time with JW fighting WWII. After that, my favorites are The Longest Day and Operation Pacific. I enjoy experiencing all of them. Tbone August 3rd, 2006, 02:35 PM I just remember liking those planes with the sharks teeth painted on them! :D ladybug April 7th, 2007, 10:12 PM Of course In Harms Way is at the top of my list, but Sands of Iwo Jima and Green Berets are right up there with the rest of them. DakotaSurfer April 8th, 2007, 07:55 AM There are a couple missing that I like that should be included: The Flying Leathernecks Operation Pacific But I picked The Fighting SeaBees since I was stationed with a group of them for awhile. Good group of guys and loyal. Jay J. Foraker April 12th, 2007, 12:28 PM I think "In Harm's Way" is probably Duke's best war movie, although "The Sands of Iwo Jima" might edge that out occasionally in my mind. "IHW" had a depth of characterizations and a good pace. I know the battle at the end left something to be desired with the obvious models of the ships involved, but I've come to accept that. Oh, don't forget "The Green Berets." I have a place in my heart for that, also. Cheers - Jay:beer: Lt. Brannigan April 24th, 2007, 10:48 PM I really prefer the Sands of Iwo Jima over all his other war films, but since that wasn't listed I chose Back to Bataan. thesherrif April 25th, 2007, 09:41 AM You can't just pick one can you? The Green Berets, The Longest Day, and The Sands of Iwo Jima. Ethan May 8th, 2007, 11:35 AM For me I have to say "Back to Bataan", I picked this one for it's action and for it's portrayal of history. The opening scene of the liberation of the POW camp at Cabanutuan is recreating actual events. ( See the movie THE RAID,) It's lifelike re-enactment of the death march, the guerilla fighting makes this my pick. Don't get me wrong JW's war movies are all very well made. A final note his role as Rockwell Torrey "IN HARMS WAY" is one of his best and definitely worthy of a best actor nomination. Regards Ethan brick May 15th, 2007, 10:59 AM In Harms Way by far the best of the war movies and the cast is second to none. What a great cast, Kirk douglas, burgess meredith, carroll oconner,Henry Fonda, Larry Hagman, the list goes on and on. I have this on Tivo oh how I love tivo I think I'll watch it now. sssshhh the duke is on!!! TexasPiper@Work May 16th, 2007, 06:56 AM I voted for, "In Harm's Way" as I always stop to watch such a great movie whenever it shows up on TV. I can understand why IHW is in a tie with "They Were Expendable" because it co-stars the very pretty Donna Reed. DakotaSurfer May 16th, 2007, 08:23 AM They are both good movies but They Were Expendable is actually rated higher by some rating entities. TexasPiper@Work May 16th, 2007, 10:16 AM They are both good movies but They Were Expendable is actually rated higher by some rating entities. Hello, DakotaSurfer. The tie I was referring to was the votes tallied in this thread. So far, both films (IHW & TWE) are tied at 14 votes a piece. Despite polls, I like what I like. Otherwise, I think "The Shepherd in the Hills" would not be overshadowed by so many of the Ford epics and the Batjac standards. Moonshine_Sally July 23rd, 2007, 09:40 AM My fave wasn't there!I go for The Flying Leathernecks I've changed my mind now and go for In Harm's Way. CaliforniaTiger August 22nd, 2007, 11:55 AM fighting seebees rocked CaliforniaTiger August 22nd, 2007, 11:56 AM green berets with JW lacked alot the westerner August 30th, 2007, 10:49 AM It is really hard to pick just one! The fighting ceebees was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. But, They Were Expendable and In Harms Way are both near the Top of my list. However, I voted for The Flying Tigers; one of my alltime favorites. I even have the Jacket! Ethan October 4th, 2007, 11:08 AM I voted for, "In Harm's Way" as I always stop to watch such a great movie whenever it shows up on TV. I can understand why IHW is in a tie with "They Were Expendable" because it co-stars the very pretty Donna Reed. I'd like to add that I run into Denison, Iowa (Donna Reeds hometown) and there is a McDonalds there that has a mural on the wall with Scenes from her films. One of the scenes is from "They Were Expendable" also has a small depiction of her in a scene from "Trouble Along The Way". It was so cool to see that!!!!! Regards Ethan BILL OF PA October 5th, 2007, 04:07 PM in harms way would have been a better film if the last navel battle they did not use such phoney looking models.for that reason they were expendable is my #1. kilo 6 March 29th, 2008, 07:15 PM As in most of these polls I find myself being asked to choose between many films I liked. I liked She wore a yellow Ribbon. TGC June 3rd, 2008, 04:16 PM Sands of Iwo Jima for me, but The Longest Day is a close second. |
