In the book "Duke - We're Glad We Knew You" Harry Carey Jr. talks about John Wayne, sharing about his (JW's) conservatism, Republicanism, and patriotism. Even though Carey didn't agree with John Wayne's viewpoint, he respected him and found him to be warmer and friendlier than those on the political left.

He says, "I'm firmly convinced in my own mind that his politics and the fact that he was outspoken hurt him because most of the people who made the movies back then were liberals [my comment: they still are!]. The thing that is strange is that when Duke met those guys he was extremely nice to them. Duke respected anybody who had definite opinions, so when he worked with those guys or met them socially he was extremely pleasant. But they thought of him as the enemy. I think that really affected the voting because most people who vote on the Academy Awards are political liberals."

I think Harry Carey, Jr. hit it right on the head!

Well ... Chris mitchum may not agree.
In the same book it was mentioned, that during a TONITE show, mention was made of a cause /group that Mitchum was involved with.
" I DIDN"T KNOW YOU WERE A PINKO ! "
Was Dukes ' response.
And no more job offers .

REASR,

Good point. In that particular case, I think John Wayne was heavy handed, and not very respectful, although I can imagine being on a talk show like that, all eyes are looking at you and you are under a lot of pressure.

Chris Mitchum's lack of job offers is two fold, however. One, even though he had a five year contract with Batjac, he never heard from them again. The little difference of opinion aired so publicly on the Carson show seemed to cost Mitchum a friendship with John Wayne. Even more frustrating to him, he ended up being blackballed by liberal directors because of his association with John Wayne and the assumption that he, too, must be an"arch-conservative".
