Hello All
Thought this might be a place to talk about movies you have watched ; new releases older films and in between. It offers other members a chance to hear one or more opinions about movies they might want to rent or buy. :jump: :cry2: :fear2: :(

"Batman Begins" - a somewhat offbeat look at the comic book character, focusing on his beginning (as the title implies). This was an improvement over the last several go-rounds.

Jay, I thought that was the best adaptation of Batman in the movies so far. I liked how the movie made him out to be more of a "real" person instead of hokey like the other films with Keaton, Clooney(Sorry Ringo, I said his name!!), and Kilmer. I really liked this movie alot.

not to highjack the thread but Adam West was the best batman ever!

The last non-western I watched was "Wake of the red witch". Being a single parent of four kids I don't get to see much else... well lots of VeggieTales.

I had a Ralph Fiennes double feature, the Constant Gardner and Sunshine. Sunshine isn't that well know but it's a good movie and Fiennes plays three characters, grandfather, father and son. He really is one of the great actors working today.

The Butterfly Effect is a great movie for those who like time travel. It deals with the main character who found out he had the ability to go back in time (his past) and change the outcome of painful events that happened to him and his friends. But he learns that subtle changes then make dramatic changes years later. I loved the film more than I thought I would.

That was my thought as well. I think Ashton Kutcher is quite limited in what he can do on screen but he pulled this character off and made a surprisingly good film.

The last non Westerns I watched were:

At the Dollar Cinema (last Friday) I watched: Failure To Launch w/ Matthew McConaughey, Sarah Jessica Parker, Terry Bradshaw and Kathy bates. Surprisingly I really enjoyed this film which is not usually the kind I would go see but, I had many laughs from it as well as (the only place in town that sell's it) a large glass of Mr. Pibb.

On Saturday evening I watched: Magnum Force w/ Clint Eastwood, Hal Holbrook, Mitchell Ryan, David Soul, Rest in Peace next three names) John Mitchum, Robert Urich and Albert Popwell.

Sunday evening I watched: The Frogmen w/ Richard Widmark, Gary Merrill and Robert Wagner.

The Frogmen, that is one film that I have always wanted to buy but everytime I go buy a movie, I get something else. I really like Richard Widmark in just about everything he did.

Hi Todd, same here about Richard Widmark. I grew up watching him as well as the Duke, Henry Fonda, Charlton Heston, Chas Bronson, Telly Savalas and so many other greats.

The Frogmen is a pretty good movie. As far as his war movies go, I prefer Hall's of Montezuma over the Frogmen, but mainly because HoM had greats like Richard Boone, Walter Palance and Neville Brand in them. One cannot go wrong having Palance and Brand in a war movie as they were both combat veterans--specially Brand.

One Richard Widmark war movie I am anxiusly awaiting to see releasedoon DvD is: Hell and High Water. It's not exactly a war movie per-se but is a great action movie from the 1950's. Another is Time Limit which is more a Courtroom drama than a war movie though a good portion of it takes place during the Korean War.

Watched an actioner the other night - "The Rundown." Not bad for its type with gorgeous scenery (filmed in Hawaii playing the part of Brazil). Starred wrestling megastar "The Rock," aka Darryl Johnson, who actually has some kind of screen presence. Also starred Rosario Dawson (MIBII, Adventures of Pluto Nash) as the female eye-candy as well as Christopher Walken doing a turn as a tongue-in-cheek villain. Not too bad as a B movie action flick with lots of wrestling-style fights.
Cheers - Jay :D

I started last eve with a Western on one of the cable stations. After it was over, I then watched Dirty Harry w/ Clint Eastwood, John Mitchum and Harry Guardino. Dang it, I sure do miss Mitchum and Guardino. :(

After that I watched La Strada (The Street) w/ Anthony Quinn (The great Pompano) & Richard Basehart (The Fool). Again, that kind of movie aint my typical type to watch but, I did so only because Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart were in it. This movie is a wierd but enjoyable movie. Also was in Italian being that it was filmed there.

That is the movie of the 1966 Western Texas University basketball team that broke the color barrior and let 5 black players play the NCAA national championship game against the Kentucky Wildcats. Last night I managed to see on TCM, the great crime drama from I think 1949 called: "He Walked By Night" w/ Richard Basehart & Jack Webb? or Richard Webb? (the guy who was on Dragnet-yeah--THAT Webb :) )

This movie was absolutely a brilliant one and I do highly recommend watching it -- especially if you are a fan of that kind of movie. This movie IMO, blows away any competition it might have coming from any of the Dirty Harry movies and movies like: Madigan.

This movie is based on a true story that happened shortly after WWII and takes place in Los Angeles, Calif. An ex-G.I, for some reason; turns to a life of crime. The criminal is played by Richard Basehart & one of the Detectives is played by the "Dragnet" Webb. Whit Bissell, plays the part of a businessman/fence, who deals with the Richard Basehart character.

Also, not to give too much away, if you like Film Noir, this is a perfect example of one.

bopoppa,

We see you are a recent addition to the ranks here at the John Wayne Message Board, so would like to take this opportunity to welcome you!

The Mrs. took our two younger kids to see Cars the other night, and they all loved it! She said she would even pay to see it at the theater again (not too many movies she says that about!). She said it was very well done, and you don't have to be a kid to see it. You will really enjoy the "scenery" of Ornament Valley!

As far as other non-westerns, we have been watching the second season of The Rockford Files, and the kids gave me An American Icon: John Wayne DVD set for Father's Day, so we watched Seven Sinners this afternoon. I had not seen it before and thought it was quite good.

I guess that about covers the waterfront . . . . Again, bopoppa, WELCOME!

I broke down last night and watched "Troy." Fairly good actioner with lots of special effects and grandeur photography. I though Eric Bana did a lot better with his character than did Brad Pitt. Though Peter O'Toole didn't have that many scenes, he still commanded attention in those he was in. Of course, history was pretty well mauled by the storyline, but the purpose here was entertainment rather than historical accuracy
"The Alamo" was nowhere near historically correct either, but JW was looking to the overall view with the primary thought of entertainment.

I too want to see this movie but, there is one thing I am angry about that is NOT included in his movie (ala) the airhead writers of today.

The writers of this movie Purposfully left out part of what Superman is about. You know the phrase: " Truth, Justice and the American Way,"
well, the morons who wrote this movie purposedly left out the words: " The American Way" and that rips me raw. These writers are forcing THEIR political correct opinions   on us by NOT having those words in that saying.

What these PC wierdo's are doing is changing something important about an American invented character - that has been around since June of what? 1938, and like it or not, IS an American icon as is Batman.

Superman went around saving people and solving crimes and such here in the USA as is where his base of operations is; NYC to be exact. Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster both must be turning over in their graves at this.

Ringo Kid, no apologies necessary for stating the truth. I noticed that as well, but since I've thrown a couple of rants on this site as well, I didn't want everyone here thinking I was pissed at the world. Superman is an easy target for changing and molding to whatever Hollywood agenda is currently supporting. Look what has happened to Christian values and symbols country wide. Problem is our kids these days follow this tripe like it IS the gospel. Just be lucky that Superman wasn't wearing a pink tutu and burning an American flag like I see here in Portland every other month. Yes, I do have to stand security in some situations for the anti-bush rallies, anti-war rallies, gay rallies, and just about any rally you could conceive of. The best part of these of course is the eventual burning of the flag. No matter what the event, it happens. Of course the people are always masked, but it happens nontheless. I could go on and on about this, but I'm going to chill and enjoy this site for what it is, a great place to talk with good people about one hell of an AMERICAN icon.

Hi Bo, thank you for the support and kind words. I admit that I can get to be a bit "passionate" in my replies and beliefs in things. I hope my reply was not taken as a jab at ya--it was not meant. I can see though, that it looks to me like we think alike. I COMPLETELY agree with you on your post and I think it's really disgraceful for the govt to allow these rallys as well as the destruction of the Stars and Stripes.

I was raised in a Veteran's household which was instilled in me, many strong beliefs. My father was an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII, Korea and early part of Vietnam Wars. My father was pretty conservative and it rubbed off on me. :-))

Take care and best regards-_C.

Hi Jay, the answer to your question is, yep--the vast majority of superheros are American created but as a growing trend of sorts--there are many from other countries.

Some I can think of from other countries are: Captain Britain, and at least 1-2 members of the X-Men, and some from the Justice League etc.

Hi Senta, I have watched War and Peace before but never have seen it all the way through. I will be watching it tonight in its entirety. From what I remember, I do like that movie very much and I thought that Henry Fonda as Pierre, was perfectly casted in his role as well as Mel Ferrer was, Herbert Lom (Napoleon Bonaparte) etc. I also like the fact that Sir John Mills & Wilfred Lawson both, are in this movie as well as a few others I like. Audrey Hepburn was as pretty as usual.

The last time I read the book was when I was in the 8th grade (many many years ago  ) The scenery was fantastic as well as the costumes.

One of the most memerable parts in the movie is when Pierre is taken prisoner by the French and is forced to take part in the French retreat from Moscow. I also love the parts where the Cossacks are harassing the French during their retreat. This movie was so well made that when I do see it, I feel like I am in that time period.

Cheers my friend. :)

Senta, I do also highly recommend watching James Cagney in: White heat, if you ever get the chance. James Cagney did such an excellent job of acting in this movie.

Hi Carl,
The scenes you mentioned is quite corerect, but the beginning of the film - the real desaster. The casting anyway is perfect. Much better when in Russian movie War and Peace.
I saw Cagney only in one movie - don't remember the title. Not that one you are writing about.

Thanks for the sentiments up above there Ringo. My wife actually picked out a movie for us the last couple of nights and we ended up waching "Donovan's Reef". Great flick overall. My wife is always amazed when she watches a movie and I show her some actors that she knew from other shows. Ceasar Ramero(spelling???) was one of them. Pretty light on the story, but a lot of fun to watch.
I'm hoping to get y'all a report of "Pirates" in a few days if my schedule lets up.

Hi Senta, all in all, as I watched this movie last night, I really did get a good "feel" of it all. Also, I think I am becoming a "new" fan of actress: Audry Hepburn. I have been taking my time watching this movie (as well as rewatching certain scenes) because I am trying to take in as much detail as possible. For instance: because of this movie I am (somewhat belatedly) that I am really into Audry Hepburn's acting. This lady really was a good actress. Anyway, i'm still not done with the movie yet and I am at the area in the movie where they were going to leave their large home in Moscow for Pierre's country home. This is where they decide to help out the military a bit by taking some of the wounded soldiers with them.

Saw some good scenes with Sir John Mills and Wilfrid Lawson. I did not recognize who the other actors were in those scenes.

On Cagney:

Some of his movies I highly recommend you watching if you have a chance are:

The Fighting 69th.
White Heat.
The Roaring Twenties.
Mister Roberts (which also has) Henry Fonda, Harry Carey Jr and I think another "Duke/Ford" veteran.
Yankee Doodle Dandy.
Blood On the Sun.

there are others I have seen with Cagney in them but cannot think of their titles at this time.

Cheers-- C. :)

Hi Bo, no problem. :) I too like Donovan's Reef and also think that Lee Marvin was perfectly cast in his role. I keep forgetting that Caesar Romero was in that movie. I'm more used to him in the role of the Joker in the Batman TV series. Another great movie that has Caesar Romero in is: Vera Cruz w/ Gary Cooper & Burt Lancaster. Also has very early appearances by: Charles Bronson (listed as Charles Buchinsky) Ernest Borgnine and Jack Elam.

I saw the first "Pirates" and greatly enjoyed it. Looking forward to your review of this one.

Hello All
Miracle--liked it reminded me that I was impressed when President Carter
got Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin together at Camp David. It was filmed in Vancouver and I saw people I have worked with in the crowd scenes. That is always interesting especially if you are into the movie. Usually we pay attention to what the principal characters are doing and then I see someone I have talked with and its like a suprise. Anyways I liked it the hockey was good and I grew up watching Kurt Russel.

Latest non-Western I watched was "16 Blocks" with Bruce Willis. Since I like Bruce in just about anything, I'll have to say that I enjoyed the movie, though the same plot has been done to death.

One thing I didn't like, though, was the almost unintelligible dialogue of the black guy Mos Def. I had a heckuva time understanding him. I don't like any movie where the dialogue, for whatever reason, is hard to understand.

Hi

I watched Rommel Desert Fox last night with James Mason playing Rommel.

It was directed by Henry Hathaway and also had in the cast Richard boone, Sir cedric Hardwicke and George Macready. In the supporting cast were American actors that you would normally see playing cavalry troopers, certainly I recognised the blonde soldier from the TV series Boots and Saddles of the fifties, and another famous supporting player featured as Doolittles mate in My Fair Lady.

It is a fact that when these films were made in black and white so quickly after the ending of the Second World War how much action footage could be used. If you added it up probably threequarters of the film was taken up with original action footage.

Recently, Deep Discount DVD had a boxed-set sale where you could get two boxed sets for the price of one. I ordered seasons 1 & 2 of the 86-87 TV series "Crime Story", which I really enjoyed when it first appeared on television. The two sets have a total of 44 episodes, which represent all the shows that were televised before the series was cancelled.

Starred Dennis Farina as a Chicago cop and Anthony Denison as the mobster he was trying to bring down.

I've spent the past 2 or 3 days watching those episodes. One of the things I liked most about "Crime Story" is that every episode had several songs from old-time rock-and-roll, rhythm and blues, etc. Brought back memories.

I watched a film that one of our sons rented, called barrio 13. It bears an erie familiarity to another earlier film. Anyone who watches it and wants to pm me is encouraged to do so. Hi Vera, im in the process of watching all 12 episodes. Im now on chapter 5. I have seen it before all the way through but, that was about 15 or so years ago. However, being a VERY early John Wayne--it's an interesting serial and there are a lot of twists and turns in the storyline. There is alot of action as well, such as train and car chases etc. I am greatly enjoying watching this serial and it is great escapeism (SP?) for me. :) When you think you know who the Phantom is, something happens and it is proven that who you think he is--really is someone else.

I highly recommend watching this when you get the chance.

Best wishes--C.

Hi

The last non western I watched was Lady and Gent last Sunday. I watched it for two reasons, the first simply because although I have had the tape for over a year I hadn't got around to watching it.
The second reason was because in my next unsung hero or star of the month I plan to write up on the career of George Bancroft. (Any contributions welcome).

The quality of the film was diabolical with it losing sound and picture quality constantly but it was easy enough to follow the story and not a bad picture.

Sorry to hear about your impending surgery. And that you get the fun of dealing with those dang insurance companies, they sure are fun!! Not!!!

What kind of recovery time are you going to have after the surgery? I think most people are planning a Sept. trip so you would have the better part of a year if your surgery was to take place soon.

Wish you luck in your operation. Talk to you later.

Where's the seat belt police when you need 'em? Just kidding!

Hi Carl - It seems that the administrative staffs of a lot of doctors seem to have IQs barely above moron. The request for refills of prescriptions with our primary doctor always seems to fall through the cracks and it takes several days for anything to finally be OK'd :headbonk: .
Have you noticed? - the medical profession is virtually the only one where if you get something you don't want or doesn't work, you still have to pay for it  . In any other instance, if you get a product you don't want or if it is defective, you can replace it or get your money back ^_^ . Between insurance boggles and rising medical costs, a sick person doesn't stand a chance :dead: .

Hi Todd, thanks for the kind words my friend. (WHEW) you hit the nail on the head with that--the insurance company sometimes is very difficult for me to deal with. I do have one on them though, I have 6 Doctors who flat out stated that I need to have that surgery--so I can't be denied too much longer.

I have been told that recovery time w/o any complications could be from 3 to 6 weeks. I am greatly looking forward to having it so I can start the healing process. Right now I am making money only part-time and look forward to a fulltime check hopefully before the end of the year.

Thank you for the nice wishes--I do need them. I have my mind set on the do's and dont's for this operation and just want to get it all started so I can move forward.

Take care my friend and maybe once this is overwith, maybe in a year or so i can make it up in your neck of the woods?

Hi Jay, I completely agree with you on everything. You nailed them to a T, the Drs I have in S.A. :uhuh2: I just don't see how they can stay in business the way they are conducting business. By the way, these Drs are now in partnership with some group out of Dallas. They were at the Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital, but recently moved to Babcock street? I think?

You know, it's been my opinion for many years that, if the insurance companies don't want to be sued bu lawsuit minded folks--or to have people always screaming in their ears--that if they (insurance company) would just quit making things so rediculously difficult for most folks; that trouble would end.

Case-in-point: Last year I had authorised 12 visits with a Chiropracter--because I have a Degenerative Bone Disease, and my insurance was to pay all visits in full. Well, the Dr worked on me-visit after visit. On my last visit, he told me that my insurance still had not paid him more than $20.00. Well, by chance, I saw him last week at a store asnd asked if he had yet been paid. To my shock, they still have not paid him in full--and it has now been close to a year since I first went to this Chiropracter. I called up my ins com, and chewerd them out because they had not paid this guy. I don't know if it will ever do any good to do so but; it burned me up that a Dr performed work on me and he had not recieved the insurance payment.

I do completely agree with you Jay. All i can say about some insurance companies is; :uhuh2: :uhuh2:

The last non-western I watched was "Abyss" in the original version which I have on VHS. I'm ambivalent as to which I like better - the original or the augmented version (with the aliens causing all the mayhem around the world).

Well, I finally got to see Cars, because it came out on DVD this week, and the Mrs. bought it (I told you she liked it :D ). I was relaxing with Christopher, who was down this week with chicken pox, and we watched it together.

I'm always suspicious of animated movies, and I don't know why, because I've been proven so wrong so many times recently. Most of them are really good movies (Finding Nemo, Toy Story 2, etc.).

Well, Cars, as it progressed, was a very good movie! Having lived through the era portrayed in the film, and understanding how towns have been bypassed by "progress" I could relate to the town of Radiator Springs. Being an old Cadillac collector in years past, I got a good chuckle out of the background scenery that appeared like Cadillac fenders sticking out of the ground. The story line had something for everyone in it, and had the typical Hollywood ending of "happily ever after" which is OK by me.

I watched last night Cast A Giant Shadow. Though this is a John Wayne, it is really focused on Kirk Douglas. A really good movie and one that I haven't seen in a long time. I forgot most of the movie, and it is the first time I seen Duke really get emotional toward something like that. I recommend this movie for all to see.

Watched another B- movie - "Scarred City" - with Steven Baldwin :headbonk: . About vigilante cops on the rampage. Wasn't really worth the trouble <_< .

Watched "Dodgeball" - one of those goofy movies where the underdog comes out on top. Mostly silly, diversionary fare.

Rest in Peace Sergeant's Gary Gordon and Randall Shugart. Both are posthumous Medal of Honor Recipients.

I watched "Decision Before Dawn" because Ringo raved about it. I must say he is correct in his statement. I never seen the ending happening the way it did. Great movie Ringo, thanks for the "plug".

Superman Returns. I know it's corny, but I liked it better than the Christopher Reeves, Superman. This one puts it in a different light without making a political statement. When I saw the first two of Reeves Superman, I discovered a few years later how politically motivated this was and disliked it after I saw them.

Hi

Just finished watching 'The First of the Few' with Leslie Howard and David Niven.
Brilliant film about a brilliant man R.J.Mitchell the designer of the Spitfire.
In the extras it included an interview with his son who put a few facts straight about the accuracy of the events.
But made at a time when Britain needed all the help it could get it was a good moral booster.
I believe there are moves afoot to remake it.

Tonight is the AMC premiere of Miracle of 34th Street, and they showed it in color and in the original black and white version. Great Maureen O'Hara movie. Need I say more.

Quite welcome Todd, glad to have another who likes that movie as much as I do. Next one (if it ever is on DvD) that I will rant about is: The Unconquored w/ Gary Cooper and Ward Bond.

I just watched my copy of Dead End with Humphrey Bogart that I received from DeepDiscountDVD.com. A 1937 classic that actually didn't star Bogart but Sylvia Sidney and Joel McCrea. A really good movie that shows an area of New York on the East River. It also stars the Dead End Kids in this movie. A must see if you like Bogart.

Another offbeat selection - "City by the Sea" - a Robert de Niro vehicle. Not exactly an upbeat film.

Picnic with WIlliam Holden (The Horse Soldiers) and Kim Novak. Very unusual movie but very well done. It also had Rosland Russell, Cliff Robertson, and Bety Field. Just different for a 1955 movie.

Watched All The King's Men with Broderick Crawford. I know I should be shot!!! . I had never seen the movie so it was interesting to see
Broderick Crawford performance as Willie Stark compared to John Wayne in Sands of Iwo Jima.

It started well but lost momentum towards the end. Interesting to see John Ireland and Joanne Dru both in roles after they had done Red River the year before.

Is the rumour true that John Wayne was offered the Willie Stark role. I couldnt see him in 1000 years playing the role it was portrayed.

For the record John Wayne's performance is the better one.

We wuz robbed.

I watched Pirates of the Caribean- Dead Man's Chest

There is allot going on in that movie and can be a bit confusing but if you stick with it, it is a good movie, not great though. I thought the first one was better.

I watched Bringing Up Baby. It had Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn (Rooster Cogburn . . . . and the Lady). This movie also had Barry Fitzgerald (The Quiet Man) and Ward Bond (in an uncredited role). I will not tell you what Bond did with Duke, there is so many to mention. A very busy movie but pretty good.

I got this with the promotional with DeepDiscountDVD.com, and got six movies and finally watched to last of the six classics from that order. The six were Bringing Up Baby, The Fighting Sullivans, Dead End, Picnic, Sergeant York, and Friendly Persuasion. I think I saved $45 on the six DVDs.

Invincible. A great movie about a football player making it in pro football (NFL) as a walk-on. Must see, and yes it is a Disney movie, but I have a friend who's character is in the movie. Denny Franks of the Philadelphia Eagles.

World Trade Center. If you don't understand why we are fighting this war on terror, then watch this movie and tell me it's a waste of time. Very moving and upsetting.

Not a typical Oliver Stone directed movie.

Watched Monster House last night.

Great animation reminded me of the Sims but the story sort of let out before the end.

The making of the movie documentary was more interesting.

Night at the Museum

We went to the theatre because the power was out at our house (was out for about 18 hours). It was pretty entertaining, and suitable for the whole family Well, most of the family - it might be boring to very young ones, and the dinosaur might be scary.

Watched Talladega Nights The Legend of Ricky Bobby last night. This is not suitable for kids. But it is funny in some parts, its worth a watch if you like Wil Ferrell humor. It is especially funny if you like Nascar and all the stuff that goes with it as they rip pretty much any aspect of Nascar.
