JWfan June 27th, 2003, 09:51 AM hi all,
I think John Wayne playes his best roles in the 60's
In those 10 years he makes some of his best westerns like:
North to Alaska
The Alamo
The comancheros
The man who shot liberty valance
MC Lintock
The sons of katie Elder
The War Wagon
El Dorado
True Grit and The Undefeated

lovesjohnwayne June 27th, 2003, 12:24 PM Hi all - my favorite films are in the 60's and 70's. I love Big Jake, The Cowboys is hard for me to watch (for the longest time I disliked Bruce Dern emensley and I always tear up when watching the part where John stands up to Long Hair and dies for his bravery - My husband just shakes his head - he supports my love for John Wayne and will watch my favorites with me) Cahill U.S. Marshall, The Shootist - so sad. Thats another hard film for me to watch. I just received quite a few movies on DVD which I like the best. :)
stacy June 27th, 2003, 04:26 PM Most defintly the 60's and 70's! John Wayne made some of the best films of his life in those years!
Stacy
Hondo Duke Lane June 27th, 2003, 06:35 PM Well, I picked the '60's, but some of his best movies were in the '50's. But I must add, that a lot of his bad films were also in the '50's which balances out, and have me picking the '60's. In the '50's the great ones are The Quiet Man, The Searchers, Rio Bravo, Rio Grande, Operation Pacific, Trouble Alone The Way(I really liked that movie, it's great), Hondo (my name sake), The High And The Mighty.
The Bad ones, The Barbarian and the Geisha, The Conqueror, Jet Pilot, Legend of the Lost, Blood Alley, Big Jim McLain.
Others in that decade are The Horse Soldiers, I Married a Woman, The Sea Chase, Island in the Sky, Flying Leathernecks, The Wings of Eagles.
Note that I haven't seen I Married a Woman, or Island in the Sky, so I have no opinion on those two, and the others listed are alright. (This is my opinion on the choices, and not the opinion of a majority)
Hondo B)
Robbie June 27th, 2003, 08:35 PM I would have to say the late 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's the reason is because he was a dominant figure through all this time.

dukefan1 June 29th, 2003, 01:59 AM I agree that Duke made most of his enjoyable movies in the 6o's but for his best rolls, the 50's rule. Ethan Edwards was a roll he played to the hilt. Hondo, York, Sean Thorton and John T. Chance were very memorable. I also agree he made some turkeys in this decade, but the others rule them out. Just my take on it. dukefan1
Araner June 29th, 2003, 08:08 AM Hondo Duke Lane, I Married A Woman is a cameo movie for JW. I have it on tape, Duke has two scenes in it. One is a movie screen and the other is an appearance on a cruise ship as himself with a ficticious wife. The main character's wife wants her husband to be as romantic a JW, hence the cameo.
I think JW's best movies came from 1947-1957. It involves a 2-decade 10 year period.
Some of the greats include:
Angel and the Badman
Fort Apache
Red River
3 Godfathers
Wake of the Red Witch
Sands of Iwo Jima
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Rio Grande
Operation Pacific
The Quiet Man
Hondo
The High and The Mighty
The Seachers

AEC23 June 29th, 2003, 11:57 AM My favorite time period for the Duke's movies would have to be from '46 until '59. Really all of the movies that I watch over and over are from this period. It starts with Without Reservations, which is overlooked by many, but one of my favorites. It really showed the Duke's comic abilities. Then it includes all of his classics like Angel and the Badman, Red River, Three Godfathers, Yellow Ribbon, Fort Apache, Rio Grande, Searchers, Rio Bravo. There are too many during this time to name. He had so many strong characters and roles that it's hard to pick just one decade.
BrianB July 2nd, 2003, 02:13 AM As for the pole I picked the 60's. I would say the 60 or the 70's, but I cannot leave out the rest of his movies.
They are all great.
Brian
Tulalip Wa
Monique July 9th, 2003, 01:44 PM I would have to say the 40's,50's, 60's, and the 70's. I truefully cannot pick just one decade.
Monique ;)
Northerner July 9th, 2003, 11:56 PM I picked the fifties for the same reasons that Hondo listed. However Hondo, I don't agree with your list of bad ones. Especially Legend of the Lost. Why doesn't anyone like that movie? Duke was terrific in it and SOPHIA LOREN was tremendous as always. I mean, she was/is one of the greatest actresses of all time. Well maybe not, but she sure keeps ya glued to the screen.
Northerner :D
Chell July 15th, 2003, 06:51 AM The 1960's
William T Brooks October 3rd, 2004, 09:12 AM I think the late 40s, the 50s and the 60s but his best was the mid 70s with "The Shootist"! Chilibill :cowboy:
JOHNWAYNEABE October 9th, 2004, 04:17 AM Of course when he was young he was inexperienced and you could tell. Could any of you do your job the BEST in the begining? As far as I am concerned he was and always will be the best in anything he did. I enjoy for instance Paradise Canyon, Randy Rides alone and The Hurricane Express just as much as McLintock, Donovans Reef, and Rooster Cogburn (I happen to be watching Rooster Cogburn as I am typing. I suggest tivo you can record all his movies in high quality format and watch them whenever you please) I cant get enough of his TV shows, articles, movies and books. In Lucille Balls immortal words JOHN WAYNE GGAAAAAAAAAA!!
;)
The Ringo Kid October 16th, 2004, 04:53 PM :cowboy: It was hard to choose because I like many of his films from all the decades listed. I chose the 40's though. TRK.
larrybusch November 9th, 2004, 01:25 PM It is nice to see the really old ones, I go for the 50s, 60s,70, yaah 40s also.
Larry
arthurarnell November 10th, 2004, 03:10 AM Hi Larry
Red River, Fort apache Three Godfathers Sands of Iwo Jima, Jet Pilot but then you go into the fifties with Rio Grande The Searchers Rio Bravo as you say any decade was good.
Regards
Arthur
Jay J. Foraker June 2nd, 2005, 11:47 AM It's resurrection time once more -
For me, it's a toss-up between the films of the 50s and 60s. JW made some excellent films and had some of his best roles in the 50s, but also made a few bummers during the same period (though still watchable simply for the presence of Duke). For the 60s, JW didn't have as many peaks, but he also didn't make anything that could be given much in the way of negative marks. This was a more consistent period for him, IMO.
For me, "Flying Leathernecks," "The Quiet Man," "The Searchers," "Hondo" and "Rio Bravo" help give the 50s the edge by a very narrow margin.
Cheers - Jay ^_^
Emmanuel June 7th, 2005, 03:29 PM Hi all
It has to be the 50's THE QUIET MAN, HONDO, THE SEARCHERS, RIO BRAVO.
need I say more?
Emmanuel.
Baby Sister June 7th, 2005, 06:28 PM I guess I'm just like everyone else ...I find it very hard to narrow it down to just one decade. I guess I would have to say the 40's and 50's. It is when he made some of my favorites.
Rio Grande
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
The Quiet Man
The Searchers
and so on.........
Baby Sis

erscolo June 11th, 2005, 01:38 AM The 1950s gave us The Quiet Man, The Searchers and many other films in a variety of film genres. John Wayne got the chance to play in a wide variety of roles at the time he was always near the top of the charts. Not all the films proved stellar, but those that did truly shine.
Roger.
Cole Thornton August 3rd, 2005, 07:35 AM Wow! I never realized there were so many polls around here! And now I'm voting in them!;) Seriously!
I was thinking of this very question and I think the 1960s was Duke's best decade. The films have already been mentioned here, so I'll just relay this thought: Duke had perfected his rugged, individualist persona he had been forging for twenty years. He embodied these values to many of his viewers and to the world at large Not only that, it was now at odds with the changing world (i.e. rampant Liberalism), Making Duke even more representative of the beliefs he extolled on screen.
Moonshine_Sally September 25th, 2005, 09:14 AM He played his best roles in the 60's but he did look at his best in the 50's
DukePilgrim January 24th, 2007, 10:30 AM This is a hard one.
I think of the 1940s and the Ford Trilogy Red River Sands of Iwo Jima
The 1950's he was definitely in his prime with The Quiet Man, Hondo The Searchers
The 1960's were his icon days Alamo War Wagon Sons of Katie Elder Green Berets True Grit etc
On final consideration I will go for 1960s!!!
Jay J. Foraker January 24th, 2007, 12:06 PM I'll go for the sixties as well. Duke mellowed nicely in his later years.
Cheers - Jay:beer:
ethanedwards January 24th, 2007, 06:53 PM All of them!!!
DakotaSurfer January 24th, 2007, 09:25 PM That's a hard vote... he's done so many good movies his last 20 years, but his last 15 years he did with some very serious health conditions and half a lung missing. I don't think anyone could ever do what he did with what he was going through. He was a man above men.
chester7777 January 25th, 2007, 08:51 AM We agree with Keith, All of them ! ! !
Chester :newyear:
Tbone March 13th, 2007, 09:37 AM I would say it's hard to limit him to just one decade, but if I had to I'd say the 50's.
chris roberts March 13th, 2007, 02:50 PM I have voted for the 50's, it was a hard choice as i like westerns the best, and unfortunatly there were only 5 - Rio Grande, Hondo, The Searchers, Rio Bravo and The Horse Soldiers - only 5 but what a great 5. Plus of course other great movies like The Quiet Man, Flying Leathernecks, Trouble Along the Way, The High and the Mighty etc.
Two of my all time favourites however are from the 40's Red River and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. My best 60's western is The Commancheros - great fun and favourite 70's is The Cowboys,
Chris.
gt12pak March 13th, 2007, 05:06 PM How am I supposed to have a favorite decade? Hell I like them all!! But if I have to choose, it would have to be the 60's, followed VERY closely by the 50's, followed VERY closely by the 40's!!!
taw jackson March 19th, 2007, 07:28 PM I agree with jwfan, I think that most of his best work comes from the era.
I know that my self i really like eldarado and true grit, of course i like all the others alot to but those are two of my very favorite.
Lt. Brannigan April 24th, 2007, 11:06 PM I myself feel that his best work came in the seventies, out of the ten he made I only somewhat dislike 1 of those. I grew up on these movies and Brannigan has a special place in my heart.
DakotaSurfer April 24th, 2007, 11:42 PM Very hard to choose, but he did the last 10 movies with a lot less lung and in very poor health.

mhitt July 19th, 2007, 03:30 PM I like many movies from each decade. It is interesting to watch the really early movies like "Baby Face" and "The Big Trail" after watching some of his later films and noting just how far he had come along as an actor. But he certainly had a screen presence even in those early "B-Z" movies.

chester7777 August 18th, 2007, 10:37 PM I would have to say the 40's,50's, 60's, and the 70's. I truthfully cannot pick just one decade.
Monique ;)
Neither can I, Monique, neither can I.
Chester :newyear:
erscolo January 6th, 2009, 11:37 PM Okay, well a decade is ten years, so I will go with the decade of 1947-1956, or if pushed, 1948-1957. I love both Red River and the Searchers, and there are several very good films in between including Sands of Iwo Jima, the calvary trilogy and the Quiet Man.
oliver13 August 2nd, 2009, 06:47 PM I picked the 50's but I don't believe that he had a bad decade.
ShortGrub August 3rd, 2009, 02:59 AM Duke really didn't have a bad decade. I picked ten twiner years with 1953-63.
Just had to start with Hondo and finish with McLintock.
firstrebel August 3rd, 2009, 04:01 AM Heck, I can't answer this, I tried to. Each decade had its jewels, but the late 50's and on were a lot more 'stable' in high standards of acting and entertainment. I really like those short B&W movies from the 1930's' like Blue Steel. They are a bit like the music from the mid/late 1950's where they were cutting new boundaries.
Bob
kevin k November 9th, 2009, 10:40 PM i think every decade i lke but in the 50s he did alot of different roles-trouble along the way, island in the sky, quiet man only like four westerns but all four were great-rio grande[one of the most underated films of all time]hondo[might be a tougher dude than ethan edwards,of course the searchers[nobody forgets ethan-'dont ever ask me again,as long as you live, dont ever ask me again']-rio bravo[i watched so much a couple years ago my wife thought i was crazy]and the horse soldiers[people write this one off but there are some great scenes-my favorite is with russell simpson, denver pyle, strother martin the deserters, for the life of me why russell simpson has no entry in katz"S film encylopedia escapes me he's pa joad for cying out loud, appeared in hundreds of film and stage-and how bout "they were expendeble'waiting with gun and dog on the porch for the jappanease-come on this man deserves an entry]oh i forgot how bout dukes cameo in"i married awomen'and barbarian and geisha would work if they could do it over its not a bad idea-blood alley probally no hope for that but duke didnt want to that anyway
