Hondo Duke Lane June 29th, 2003, 01:10 AM I am a fan because of his movies. If it wasn't for his movies none of us would be a fan of Duke. I can appreciate all he contirbuted, and have learned to understand his belief and causes. But without his movies there would be no Duke to appreciate today.

BrianB July 2nd, 2003, 05:51 PM His movies.....and everything else you listed...but first his movies then I began to know more of him

Monique July 9th, 2003, 11:53 AM By his movies, I remember watching the War Wagon when I was eight or so. I'm now twenty-five and have
a nice collection of John Wayne Movies.

dukefan1 July 10th, 2003, 06:15 AM As Hondo stated, we all became fans because of his movies. It's the main introduction to the man. Once you are hooked on his movies, then you learn the other things about him that just make you admire him more. It really is hard to find anything that makes you ashamed to be a fan. Oh, others may bring up his non-military record but I understand why he never served. Mistakes he made are those anyone would make. He was someone to look up to and his friends were proud to be just that , his friend. Nuff said! dukefan1
MMA10mm July 10th, 2003, 07:34 PM Well, I was going to compose something, but DukeFan1 nailed my feelings exactly...
baron von Rassilon July 11th, 2003, 12:47 AM My reason is that when I was a kid, when my dad came home (he was a commercial pilot and was away alot), if a new Wayne picture was playing, we HAD to go see it.
Sometime watching these films remind me of my father (he has passed away 10 years ago) and the times we were together. Now my son and I watch them (only the war films as he doesn't care for cowboy pics) much like my father and I did.
I also enjoy watching his films because I know that when I see them, there is going to be quality acting and story, instead of a lot of special effects that mask over the poor acting.
Also, my father looked a lot like John Wayne and had been mistaken for him on a couple of times.
Robbie July 13th, 2003, 03:32 PM I became an admirer after watching some of his movies and a fan when I heard about his real life deeds.

Chell July 15th, 2003, 01:19 AM His movies in which he showed us his style. His honor and duty to the people and his nation

duke10100ad October 15th, 2003, 02:43 PM the question is why i am a John Wayne fan? i think the answer to that questio is because of how much he seemed to have so much love for every one. he hada huge heart i was born in 1982 and feel like i knew him i am a huge fan and i wish i could have meet him and also he was like a babysiter of sorts to me groing up when my parents had to work i just put in a john wayne movie and i felt like he was keeping a ye out for me while he wa watching everything else.
A Girl Named Jen October 16th, 2003, 09:20 AM Hi there! Welcome!
I think a lot of people feel that way about Duke as a sort of guardian... I have a cousin that I am very close to - in truth, he's actually more like a second brother to me. Anyway, for various reasons, he grew up without much of a fatherly presence and was mostly raised by a bunch of wonderful women - his mom, his aunts, his grandmother. He watched Duke films all the time with our grandma, and I honestly think that's where he got a lot of his ideas about what it means to be a man. My cousin is 35 now and all grown up, but I think the impression Duke made on him is still there. He loves horses and rodeos and the occasional sip of whiskey, for one thing. ;) Sometimes I can even see a lot of Duke's physical mannerisms in the way he walks and carries himself. The ladies like it that he's about the same size as Duke, too. ;)
Anyway, John Wayne really did cast a giant shadow. No doubt about it.
Slugaholic86 October 16th, 2003, 09:49 AM May I add that I find the duke so DAMN FUNNY????
JOHNWAYNEABE October 7th, 2004, 10:27 PM I am a fan due to the fact that there was nothing fake about him that person he portrayed on film was him in real life. He stood for everything good and honest. Not like all these actors these days they are all CRAP! Like John Wayne said don't go to the movies unless you believe in the hero! And there are no heros left just a bunch of over payed over sexed spoiled little clowns. John Wayne is my hero!! :cowboy:

JOHNWAYNEABE,
Welcome to the John Wayne Message Board, the best of its kind this side of dot com! Good to have you here!
You're right, it doesn't seem there are any heroes any more - thank goodness we have the Duke!
We hope you you'll stick around here, and join in some of the other discussions.

The Ringo Kid October 15th, 2004, 05:27 PM I guess you can say that I was born liking the Duke. Both of my parents loved him (especially my mother) and some of the first movies I can ever recall seeing whan I was a yonker were John Wayne movies.
The first ones I remember seeing were: Rio Lobo, Big Jake, The Longest Day, and The Alamo. I remember that every year on the anniversary of the start of the Alamo siege, that local TV stations always played The Alamo as a way to recognize th event. Sadly nowadays, they no longer make a tribute to the Duke or to special days like the one mentioned above. Instead, they play the usual stuff that they normally play from week to week.
I think that is tragic because for one, I got me interest in learning about history and the wild west, thanks to seeing these movies. Today I am hardpressed to find someone who is still in school, that knows about the Alamo, WW2 or even John Wayne.
I used to look forward to staying up late Saturday nights to see a John Wayne or Johnny Weismuller movie. Sunday afternoons and evenings about twice a month on local stations, we got old war movies, westerns, and exposure to the Duke.
I really wish that tv stations in my area would go back to the way they did things 20 or so years ago.
Yah tah hey The Ringo Kid. :cowboy:
John_Wayne_Gilvin December 27th, 2004, 05:51 PM When I was born, I "...came out with my dukes up.", and my father was a big John Wayne fan (and a little wierd in the head...). So they decided to name me John Wayne.
Every once in a while my father would watch John Wayne movies, but at his late age, he didn't really get into it as much. I was never really interested too much. I just saw some old cowboy movies that really didn't interest me a whole lot apart from the gun fights. I would always hide my middle name because I thought it was embarrasing to be named after some old movie star. It wasn't until I was about 19 years old when I started to really enjoy John Wayne movies and playing out my name (good party name, heh) And only recently (age 21) have I been really getting into it and discovering my "herritage."
This is really odd, because my father never influenced me to like John Wayne, and after 19-21 years I've developed my own personality and interests. I'll watch a John Wayne movie and love it.
So why am I a fan? Because I was named after John Wayne. Nope. I'm mainly a fan because John Wayne characters are so interesting, movies are great, and because of a lot of the already mentioned reasons in this forum (avoiding repetition).
Jay J. Foraker January 10th, 2005, 03:51 PM John Wayne Gilvin - A belated welcome to the John Wayne Message Board. I think you'll find a special comraderie here just as the Duke was a special individual. There is a lot of information that you will find here on John Wayne - there are some very knowledgeable people on this board that, more often than not, can answer an obscure question or two for you.
As a relative newbie myself, I can say that you'll be made to feel welcome in no time at all.

Jay J. Foraker January 10th, 2005, 09:59 PM Hi Cookie & Milk -
No. I never met Duke, unfortunately. If I had the wherewithal back in 1960 when he was here in San Antonio for the big premiere of "The Alamo," perhaps I could have. But that comes under the heading of opportunities lost.
I know he did have three wives - you'll find more about these as you scan the posts.
Good hunting and, again, welcome!

I inherited my devotion to the Duke from my Mom (don't know where she got it) and my daughter (who's 33) inherited it from me. I think that's great that Big John's fandom spans generations like that.
I remember going to a Wayne movie several years ago (think I was living in Denver then). There was a fairly long line of people waiting to buy tickets and I began studying them. There were all types of people in that line, from grayhairs through hippies to shrieking youngsters. All waiting in line to see the Duke. Made me realize just how popular the man was.
I've said it before in this forum (and upset some people) but I'll say it again. I don't think it was Wayne's acting ability that inspired such devotion as it was his patriotism, his presence and what he stood for. His screen persona, if you will. As it says on his Congressional gold medal, he was "John Wayne, American" and many if not most Americans relate to that. He represented strength, principle, honor and most other traits we admire in men. In short, the Man was unique.
InHarmsWay January 30th, 2005, 09:32 AM Stumpy,I believe you just said it best....his presence and what he stood for....and of course his acting had something to do with it.! :cowboy:
thesherrif February 25th, 2005, 09:43 PM Well I agree with most of what been said before. That just shows how diverse this man was! He stood as a symbol of what an American should be. I have always enjoyed watching the Duke and am enjoying seeing my kids start to as well.
This was a great topic.

Duke.45 March 7th, 2005, 03:39 AM I grew up watching John Wayne with my father. He's my father's hero and one of the main reasons he became a police officer. I, being a 'daddy's girl' would sit and watch with him, mostly the westerns. I came to love the Duke for all the reasons my father does. He represents everything a good person should live by, such as strength of character and honor, which no one talks about anymore.
I too am now a police officer and I work for the same department as my father (who has a cardboard cut-out of JW in his office). He and I both think the same way in difficult situations on the street: What Would John Wayne Do? or WWJWD ;) . My two heroes: John Wayne and my dad.

HEY, DUKE.45--IT WAS REAL NEAT READING YOUR STORY. IT'S NICE TO KNOW THAT OTHER GIRLS (WOMEN) HAVE FOLLOWED IN THEIR DADDY'S FOOTSTEPS. NICE TO HAVE YOU ABOARD!!!!! :D
JWAngel April 8th, 2005, 01:53 PM [FONT=Optima] I became a fan because of the style he portrays in his movies but that drew me to learn more about the man. I've read several biographies now of the people closest to him; his daughter Aissa, his wife Pilar, and Maureen O'Hara.
I now love the man more than the legend. There are some who are happy with the bad to the bone, defeat anyone, never cries, heroic legend. I will take the man who loved to play chess, go shopping, danced with his wife, worries about other people, and had a steadfast testimony of freedom.
JDeal April 8th, 2005, 03:21 PM I became a John Wayne fan due to my grandpa. He's the one who got me to understand who the Duke was and how he portrayed himself on screen and off screen in moral values of life when he was alive. To this day my grandpa and I still
catch a John Wayne movie together.
The Ringo Kid April 9th, 2005, 02:37 PM I just think it's great that one way or another, I get my daily dose of The Duke even if it is only justa commercial advertising one of his movies that will be played that day. Tonight on the Hallmark Channel are a mini Duke marathon. I will be catching some of it when I get off the computer.
Cole Thornton April 9th, 2005, 04:01 PM I thought I'd responded to this thread some time ago. Guess not!
I like the philosophy that Duke represents in so many of his roles. The man who doesn't like bureaucracy, hypocrites, martinets and people who look down on others. I think a lot of that comes from what my own grandfather believed and I see a lot of those beliefs reflected in Duke. Perhaps that's why I like John Wayne so much. The "rugged individual" personified. I'm also fascinated with the 1930s-1950s time frame. Whether it be movies, music, style, the way people treated one another or the more rigid structure so lacking since then. Duke represents all that was good about that time frame, and it's an element of what I call the "American Character" that needs to be rediscovered by today's Americans. Oh sheesh, I don't know what I'm trying to say!

Colorado Bob April 23rd, 2005, 06:29 PM Howdy!
Well, this is kind of a tough question! Why am I a John Wayne fan? I think there are a lot of reasons why, but, first and foremost, I think it has a lot to do with his character. The kind of man he was. I have read quite a bit about him, and what I have read (with the exceptions of the "anti-Wayne" people out there who have nothing better to do than run him down with misquotes and lies) has shown me that he was a man to be admired. He possessed many of the attributes and characteristics that, in my opinion, define a hero. His sense of loyalty, his ideology, his philosophy of life. These, combined with many other characteristics of Duke's are the reason I admire him so much. I wish I could have met him. I wish I could have known him better.

Kcat May 27th, 2005, 03:15 PM Admiring John Wayne came just naturally to me when I was a little girl, and now that I'm a grown woman, it still does. Recently I've made a discovery. Working as an artist in my home, I would frequently try to find a movie to enjoy, and even relax to, so to speak, as "background" while I drew. Very often that would be a John Wayne movie. It came to me one day that his movies actually brought me a feeling of comfort and safety. I found that I was seeking them out exclusively. I had to ask myself why I was doing that, and I realized he brought me a sense of reassurance. I'm still kind of amazed by this, for I've never experienced this phenomenon before. Anyone else feel this way? Kcat :artist:
Moonshine_Sally September 28th, 2005, 01:29 PM Most af all I like John Wayne trough his films ofcourse! As I already said in another topic it was my grandmother on my father's side who "introduced" me to him and to Humphrey Bogart. They where her hero's.I must've been 4 or 5 at the time as she passed away when I just turned 6.I have very few memories of her which I remember fondly and over the years whenever there was a John Wayne on I always kept saying gran would've loved it!So in a way John Wayne helped ME to remember my grandma. Now so many years later he is one of my biggest hero's,collect his dvd's.Only this week I finally bought McQ at work, must've been just released here as I'd never seen it before. He has made great films, although he has also made some which I think he shouldn't have made but then other people might like those so who am I to judge? Finally I'd like to say that John Wayne was a MAN.The way he looked, the way he walked and then that voice...they don't make them like that anymore!!!!!
ethanedwards September 29th, 2005, 07:38 PM Gee Sally,
Duke was a real MAN! and he sure can't be replaced,
but to say that they don't make men like him anymore!!
On this site, we have some real, real, men,, nearly as good as big Duke,
Chester, Hondo, Ringo, Arthur, Stumpy, Viper,
and even Jay,
don't underestimate them, they may have nothing else,
but they sure have True Grit!!
Best Wishes,

Tuscarora October 22nd, 2005, 11:21 PM I am a fan of John Wayne because of his movies. His movies are the way 99% of us were introduced to him. Most of us grew to love him because of his persona on and off the screen because of what he stands for, America. You can go anywhere in the world and when they find out you are from the USA the first name they throw out is JOHN WAYNE. His legacy will last forever. My father introduced me to John Wayne when I was very young, maybe 4 or 5. I have already got my 9 year old son loving JW, and I am sure he will have his son or daughter on board right here with us when the time comes.

Welcome to the board, it is great place were you will get a lot of information. I too became JW fun because of his movies and screen image that is very important to me. I became is fan and even see him for the first time not far ago. And sometimes I try to imagine how it is to raise from the childhood having his movies and him in mind. I think it is great. But my experience, when I opening something new - his movies that I never seen and try to collect, facts about him and so on - is also great, because you always live with the hope that next day has some great miricals to you. I love it this way.
You had a great opotunity to meet Duke. Can you tell us more about it, and about your father, who introduced you to Duke.

Welcome to Duke Wayne--Tuscarora. Also, I like your username which is a character from one of my favorite Duke films (Rio Lobo)
Best regards--C.
Tuscarora October 23rd, 2005, 04:02 PM Thanks Ringo,
Rio Lobo is also one of my favorites, the acting on some of the co-stars is not so great but the Duke is great as always. When me and my brothers were kids, we used to play cowboys all the time, and my name was always Tuscarora. Now as an adult I finally got to use it. Thanks again.
