I enjoy reading the posts on this forum. There are many JW fans just getting started, and one can feel their enthusiasm. I hope you accept a little piece of advice from someone who was collecting before their time:
When I got started, every JW title was a find. You bought tapes from guys who recorded the films before you yourself had a VCR. You travelled long distances, sometimes to foreign countries, to pick up a film or a poster. Nowadays, with one click you could have Amazon send you about 100 JW titles at once, and on Ebay you'll find pretty much everything you ever hoped for. There's just one thing:
I sometimes wished I could go back to the time when I saw Red River or Rio Bravo for the very first time. Because that first impression will stuck with you. So when I read some of the posts on this board like "I'm gonna check out this one tonight, and gonna rent this one tomorrow" I'd like to tell those fellow JW enthusiasts: Don't rush it. Make it a premiere at home! Get a great dinner first, and break out the brandy after. Get dressed in yer best! For me, I have only a couple of films left, some of the thirties and some of the silents, which I haven't seen yet. And I intend to make it a happening. Because you can only watch it ONCE for the first time.

I totally agree with you. I can remember being a kid watching the Duke's films for the first time. I can still feel the excitement when he would beat the bad guys, or make it through to the end of one of his war films. I still remember how I cried and cried when he died in Sands of Iwo Jima. I was maybe 12 or so. I had stayed up real late one night after everyone else was asleep to catch it on tv. I remember waking my dad up the next morning and telling him that I was never going to watch it again because it sucked and he died. ( I was a little overly dramatic when I was a kid). Not that I don't love his films when I watch them for the 50th time, but there is something golden about the first time you see one.

Great post Roland, I for one have purposely missed some of Dukes movies when they have come on tv because I would prefer to watch them at a later date and I am also kinda glad that high and the mighty and isaland in the sky are missing because it leaves a little exitement there for when they will eventually be released and I would love it if they were released for a week or two in cinemas first because there would be a big demand for this.

One could also say the same regarding this messageboard, try not to post too many new topics at a time because we will soon run out of topics to discuss and in posting too many topics at a time the enjoyment of dealing with each individual one is lost.

And those are my thoughts for today

itdo,

The first time I saw Rio Bravo was after I purchased it on VHS in 1991 with the TimeLife John Wayne Video Series. I sat in my apartment and saw the beginning. That part made up the whole movie in a nutshell. I knew after the first 5-10 minutes I had a classic on my hands, and I was hooked forever on Duke. I couldn't get enough of him, and didn't won't to wait for the video next month of Sands of Iwo Jima.

If you ever want to win anyone on Duke, get Rio Bravo. That movie is a great starter, and it really will get people on the edge of their seats. What a great movie! Should have been my #1, but can't beat The Quiet Man. Don't rush it, just it let flow, and see the acting of such classic stars like Duke, Walter Brennon, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, Angie Dickinson, Ward Bond. Wow! What a cast!

Cheers, Hondo B)

Itdo, what wisdom! What a good idea to think about savouring a new movie for the first time. Though the first time cannot be recreated, sometimes watching a movie for the first time in a long time can be special, too.

Robbie, I agree with you on one point especially. I truly appreciate JWfan's great enthusiasm, but I am feeling a little overwhelmed by so many new topics. However, when things are a little quiet again, we'll have many topics to go back to, to explore again (and perhaps we'll be complaining that it's too quiet  ).

Hey . . . everybody keep on posting!

A few of us at work have a BBQ and a showing of the newest John Wayne DVD that a member of the group has bought. Means alot of BBQ's this summer. Gonna get chilly for BBQ's during the winter, but it's a great theme.

I am a little concerned about the amount of posts being put onto this messageboard as of late. There seems to be a small minority who have to post on every topic and repeat things which they have said previously. If you havent seen a John Wayne movie that is no reason to start a new topic. I realise that not all posts have to be serious of course there is a need for humour but not irrelevance, I think that it would be better if the moderators started to monitor posts and filter out uneccesary ones. I am not trying to offend anyone and I realise that some may think that some of my posts have been too frequent and or unnecessary but I am just trying to say that I am finding some of the material put on this messageboard as of late both tiresome and uninspiring and I am fast loosing interest with this board.

Respectfully
Robbie

C'mon Robbie, lighten up a little!

I have read every one of Brian's posts, and they have related to the topic at hand, and brought some old stuff back to the front again (Chester's even done that himself, for the express purpose of "bringing something back to the top"). It means Brian's really reading what's on the board, and even having to go back several pages to do it, he's not just skimming the surface.

Actually, Chester's a little jealous that Brian's had over 60 posts in one day. That's got to be a record. At that rate, he'll be in the 100 Post Club by tomorrow (another record!).

Robbie, we've all been guilty of the occasional "fluff" post, but this board's big enough for everybody.

And can you truely be overwelmed with Duke stuff? Not I. I enjoy seeing the passion build in someone young who discovered John Wayne or someone who finally found others to share stories with. That is what this board is all about. I look foward to coming here and seeing what's new. Lately, I know befor I come that there will be something to read. As many know, I run my own site, but my board is often slow or not used in days. This board has not of yet let me down. Thanks for the fun, group! dukefan1

Right-on Dukefan1,

I enjoy a good read everytime I come to this board. I may or may not respond, that's my option, and sometimes its something everyone likes to read , and sometimes its pure nonsense, but that is alright. I will not use this board to omit comments made because its nonsense. Only when it gets offensive, and inappropriate.

Don't forget, we have children here, and I don't read bad words, etc.

P.S. BTW, this is pure nonsense. Not this post, but this thread.

Robbie ,
If you are refering to me. Every third to forth day at work I sit with two other security guards in a closed out native american casino. So from 6pm-6 am I pass time online. Just happens I found this sight. So if I'm able to be online for 11-12 hours so be it. I'm not here to rain on anyone's parade. Just another big time John Wayne fan.
