This is a list of some of our grand lady's movies, which I think were her best. You might think of others, but here is a top list of her movies with a seprate selection being "Other". Of course you may comment what the other is on your choice.

Good Evening
I have read your comments on your favourite O'Hara film, I personally can't decide between The Quiet Man, McLintock or Rio Grande. The chemistry between Duke and Maureen is very evident in all three films. However a very good topic.

Well, we are avid The Quiet Man fans, but had to give a nod to The Parent Trap, as our family gets an awful lot of enjoyment out of that one. And of course we adore Miracle on 34th Street and McLintock.

Then there's Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation, with Maureen O'Hara and Jimmy Stewart . . . we'd better stop, or we'll never get anything else done today . . . .

Keith, where did you get a copy of The Spanish Main? It is not readily available, that we can tell, and on Amazon, it is only available from their French site. Is your copy French? Parles voux francais?

OK, so we actually checked Amazon (US) and discovered that they have one available, "used & new" category, for a mere $115.99 :fear: . I've heard of inflation, but that's ridiculous <_< .

Hi Jim,

The Spanish Main

Well all I can say, I'm glad it was on UK TV,
a few weeks ago, and I recorded it!!
Perhaps my version, is worth a few dollars too?

Kids will be kids, and my son had a pirate 'mad' phase,
so I also recorded The Crimson Pirate

All great, harmless fun!!!

Best Wishes

Speaking of pirates, did you know that Tuesday was "International Talk Like a Pirate" day?? Who knew? Check HERE (http://www.talklikeapirate.com/).

Regarding your copy, I suspect you could be poppin' out DVDs and selling them on ebay, for a mere $40 or $50 each.

I also went with other. I just can't think of any of her work that i didn't enjoy. However i think that most of us will agree that the most believable couple pairing was with THE DUKE. The chemistry is just so strong you forget it is a movie and feel like you are watching a couple who are your long time friends. i also think that whie she has received many complements on how beautiful she was and still is for someone over 80, that hollywood never really gave her, her due when it came to her looks. a few of her very early movies it seems they tried to make her the starlett type. you know just another pretty face well built girl that after 30 would never be seen again, but she was so much more and way too talented and probably tough to accept that type of type casting and i for one am glad for that. I remember the 1st time i actually noticed that she was one heck of a beautiful woman. she was 41 and co starring in The Parent Trap. The actress Joanna Barnes, who played the girlfriend of the dad was, well, a walking, talking and breathing Barbie doll. She was the perfect image of what most people think is every mans dream girl. It is the scene where Mrs. O'Hara was standing bare foot on a stool reaching up for something that it hit me how much more than just a pretty face and great actress she is, not having the role of the beauty queen but the proper boston raised mother in her motherly clothes and apron. i guess i was 16 or so it was near 1982 when vcr's had dropped in price where a regular family could afford them and we had rented several movies with The Parent Trap being my little sisters selection.
As the years went by and i saw her in movies she made at an earlier age as well as at an older age i figured out what it was that i found so attractive and appealing about her. Yes other actresses were prettier or more fit to the hollywood mold of a beauty queen, but they never had the class or carried themselves with the modest confidence of Mrs. O'Hara. She never had to hide any flaws in her acting ability behind a scant wardrobe or overly stated focus on her beauty, she was and is beautiful from the inside out, and it comes through in every minute of every scene i have had the pleasure of seeing her perform.
In fact during a discussion with some guys i work with i listed her as the best of all time. The younger guys laughed and rattled of girls from baywatch and the like but the guys my age and older all got what i was trying to explain and they had to agree. Even in her last few movies where she is 75 to 80 you can still see the inner beauty that time can never take away. The baywatch types will be long forgotten as age takes away their appeal, but she will be remembered long after we are gone and while she may never get credit as being a sex symbol, someone will always be observant enough to see her true beauty and talent for which no adjective can come close to describing. The only thing left to say is thank you Mrs. O'Hara for all the joy your work has given to so many people for so many years and The Christmas Box will or should be canonized as a classic in the same way as Miracle on 34th Street. Your work just seems to be like wine and gets better with age.

I thought that we would do a Top Ten movies of Maureen O'Hara.

1. Any movie she did will count, and you may change your mind but your list will be counted one time only. The best way to make you changes are to edit your list.

2.This will continue until November 30 at midnight your time.

3. All members on this message board are eligible for the vote.

4. Let's stick with 10 (ten) of her movies. Any more will not count. You may also list less than ten.

5. Have fun

It was hard to put these into an order . . . :uhuh2: . . . we like 'em all!

The Quiet Man

The Parent Trap

Miracle on 34th Street

McLintock!

Rio Grande

Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation

The Christmas Box

The Rare Breed

Spencer's Mountain

We've also seen her in Big Jake, Wings of Eagles, and How Green Was My Valley. In the first two, her roles were quite limited, and in the last one, the plot was so depressing we could hardly count it as a favorite.

We've ordered Only the Lonely, so maybe after we've watched that, we'll add it to the list.

Thanks, Hondo, for getting us to think about this!

HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY.

With Wayne THE QUIET MAN.
And since McLINTOCK! is finally available in WideScreen, I really like it!
RIO GRANDE too of course. I haven uncut Super-8 print of it which I screen
every other two years.

I'm heavily involved in working on Sam Peckinpah's legacy (doing documentaries, articles, retrospectives and a book). Their collaboration wasn't very memorable, mainly because Charles Fitzsimons didn't recognize Peckinpah's talent and did not allow the creator of THE RIFLEMAN & THE WESTERNER to work on the script or talk to his sister Maureen... The result was a mediocre low-budget western, 'partly saved by Bill Clothier' (Peckinpah)

I have really enjoyed reading your favorite O'Hara movies and I find it very hard to say which one I like the best. She is one of the greatest actresses in film. I loved her in The Parent Trap and Spencer's Mountain. And I can't think of a movie with Duke that I didn't like either. How can you forget Miracle on 34th Street. And so many others. But I have to tell you that my favorite one is The Quiet Man with John Wayne. She is my favorite actress and no one and I mean no one can ever take her place.

What are some of your favorites?

Just thought I'd let you know the price has dropped considerable since September of 2006, as Amazon has a used copy (import) for $21.79. Deep Discount has some other pirate movies with Ms. O'Hara for very reasonable prices.

In fact, we sort of went crazy and ordered a bunch of other Maureen O'Hara pirate movies - The Black Swan, Jamaica Inn, and some other titles included in a DVD with 4 titles of pirate films.

We will be having a little pirate fest in about a week!

We had some fun watching several pirate movies a few weeks ago. Maureen O'Hara was in The Black Swan and another one, Against All Flags, a film included on one of the multi-title DVDs. Jamaica Inn, Ms. O'Hara's first film, was supposed to be on one of the multi-title discs, but disappointedly was not (though listed on the cover), so we didn't get to see that one after all.

It was interesting to see her in such a role. In Against All Flags, she was actually wielding a sword with the best of them!

It's funny as hell, Mike. It was the first of the Mr. Belvedere movies and although Robert Young and Clifton Webb had more prominent roles than Maureen, she wasn't just an extra. Clifton Webb steals the show though.

The Christmas Box is a very good movie that came out a few years ago on TV. Richard Thomas and Annette O'Toole were in the movie as well. I think this is one of the last movies he made. She is approaching 88 years old, and I know it gets difficult to do these movies for a woman her age. I wish she would do more, but I do understand.

Of those listed, I'd have to choose "Miracle on 34th Street". However, I also really like "Sitting Pretty", which is a comedy starring Robert Young and Clifton Webb as the male leads, and Maureen as the female lead.

But when all is said and done, I liked Maureen in just about every role she ever played. She and Duke had a chemistry that was outta sight.

Maureen was never more ethereal than in "Hunchback of Notre Dame". No wonder most of the male characters lusted over her.
I'd also like to mention a title not on the list - "The Deadly Companions" from 1961 co-starring Brian Keith.

We deal in lead, friend.
