JWfan June 30th, 2003, 07:02 AM hi,

cya Jwfan
JWfan June 30th, 2003, 07:08 AM hi again,
my favourite movie of those is, ofcours they are all great is Chisum because the great climax where John Wayne rides in on Forrest Tucker and with those great music
also I like The Undefeated because the climax that all the French troops charge in on The Duke, Ben Johnnson and some others
but like I say all his westerns are great

smokey June 30th, 2003, 07:11 AM hi jwfan,
my choice is sons of katie elder because it shows how the brothers get along with one another and because of the great shot out it has in it.
cheers smokey
Hondo Duke Lane June 30th, 2003, 04:01 PM Agree with you smokey on Sons of Katie Elder. And you pointed out the same with addition to that was the first movie since Duke's recovery of the lung cancer. He showed the world that he could still make movies, and even though he had difficulties, he didn't let it show, and he made it work.
I might also add his chemistry with Dean Martin. This movie is listed 3rd on my favorite Duke movies, and dispite Michael Anderson Jr.'s performance (which is terrible), the movie worked great.

stacy June 30th, 2003, 04:15 PM Well here we go again!
I like these polls!
My favorite on your list is, Chism, I am agreement with JWfan about the ending. The Duke on the hill with that beautiful music. To me it looks like he is reflecting on life.
If I want to laugh I would choose, out of the ones on your list, North to Alaska. It is pretty good.
And while I am writing I totally agree with Hondo that John Wayne and Dean Martin chemistry is great! I have said that in earlier posting, and have to say because of that, Rio Bravo is on my top 5 list. I like Katie Elder, but I don't like it when the one brother gets killed. But the lines between Duke and Matin are pretty good.
So on your list, I would go with Chism.
Stacy
Robbie June 30th, 2003, 04:18 PM I love all those movies minus the undefeated and train robbers. Dont ask me to pick a favourite it cant be done. Hondo I think Bud Elders performance is perfect and just what you would expect from a young boy who thinks his older brother is a hero, I love it and Duke is great!!!!

dukefan1 July 1st, 2003, 06:11 AM I loved Big Jake the most out of the movies listed. It was very enjoyable seeing Duke act with both his sons (Patrick and Ethan). It is funny that one plays his son and the other his grandson. I loved the story line and always enjoyed watching Maureen and him banter with each other. And the line "Well, son, since you havn't learned to respect your elders. It's time you learned to respect your better." is a classic! The Sons of Katie Elder comes in at a close second. dukefan1

William T Brooks October 3rd, 2004, 09:38 AM "BIG JAKE", This was all "John Wayne The Duke!" Chilibill :cowboy:
The Ringo Kid October 16th, 2004, 04:51 PM :cowboy: Big Jake of course. It has too many actors I like in it not to be the best of these listed.
John Agar, Richard Boone, Patrick Wayne, Christopher Mitchum, Bruce Cabot, John Ducette, Hank Worden and some character actors whos names I cannot recall at this time. TRK.
larrybusch November 9th, 2004, 01:34 PM I tell you, it is hard, but out of a second, I thought of one scene that I like allot,
The start of The Train Robbers, it is not John Wayne's best movie, but it got my vote for that reason.

arthurarnell November 10th, 2004, 03:06 AM Hi
The Sons of Katie Elder for all the reasons listed including the music which is great and a very good cast.
North to Alaska came a very very close second.
The Undefeated to me seemed a nothing sort of picture with a story line that had been made out on a fag packet over a cup of coffee by someone who was looking to kill a spare hour by making a picture.
Regards
Arthur
Phantomstranger December 14th, 2004, 04:24 PM There all very entertaining movies, but for some reason I've always loved "The War Wagon"
Duke.45 March 13th, 2005, 03:48 AM "Big Jake" has been my favorite since I was a little girl. I love the exchange between JW and Richard Boone at the end where the Duke turns Boone's threat around and uses it against him. Classic!

Duke.45,
It's funny you should mention Big Jake being a favorite since you were "a little girl."
Just how little?
The reason I ask is that there was an interesting post, in a different forum, by Bonnie, a new member who is 14 years old -

I was just thinking, since I'm older now than I was a few years ago, maybe my mom will let me watch some of the movies she thought would be too violent back then, like Big Jake and The Green Berets.* Are those even that violent??15265
My wife responded that she was concerned enough by the violence in that particular movie that she won't let our 8 year old son watch it.
So . . . just how little were you when you watched Big Jake?
( . . . and for further discussion on the violent nature of Big Jake, check this out (http://www.dukewayne.com/showthread.php?t=748)).

Mrs.McLintock March 14th, 2005, 07:48 PM Big Jake, no doubt. I love when they mess with the Duke's family; you know the whole movie that the bad guys are going to pay for this one. Great lines in this one....how does it go....you can call me Jake, you can call me father, but if you eve call me Daddy again, I am going to finish this fight.
ethanedwards May 2nd, 2005, 02:07 PM North to Alaska, it was the first big Duke film, that I was old enough to go and see on my own. It was good fun, and the cast were great, apart from Fabian, who was like a wet lettuce.
There were, of course, some daft parts, like the fight scene, when the barrel was pulled along on a wire! and Dukes toupee coming off, when he got punched!
The theme song by Johnny Horton, was brilliant and still sounds good to day.It was a real tragedy that Johnny was to get killed, before the film was even finished!
falc04 May 4th, 2005, 03:15 PM North To Alaska.
Just watched it this past weekend, and it's a hoot from start to finish. My favorite scenes are mostly when Sam is back in Seattle...trying to bring back Jennie to George. The line about never having met a woman that's ½ as reliable as his horse was laugh-out-loud funny. And the scenes with Sam and Angel at the logger's picnic was great.
Duke was never better with his comic timing.
chester7777 May 5th, 2005, 12:54 AM We added our vote for North to Alaska.
Generally light-hearted fare . . . when you want to have a nice relaxing evening.

Emmanuel May 23rd, 2005, 06:23 AM The Sons of Katie Elder.
Looking at this movie, you would never know that Duke was recovering from surgery.
Emmanuel.

I'll try one of those black beers....THE QUIET MAN.
erscolo June 11th, 2005, 01:57 AM One vote for The Comancheros on this long standing poll. I do enjoy all the films on the list, but this would be my choice for the scenery, the music at the start of the film as well as for the flow of the plot throughout the picture. But hey, this is litterally only one person's opinion. :P
Roger.
Lil' Gipper July 8th, 2005, 09:38 AM Newbie checking in again. Thanks for the welcome's.
Big Jake is one of my top 3 or 4 favorites. Favorite line -
"You can call me Dad, you can call me Father, you can call me Jacob and you can call me Jake. You can call me a dirty old son-of-a-bitch, but if you EVER call me Daddy again, I'll finish this fight."

Hondo, I like The Sons of Katie Elder and Michael Anderson, Jr.'s performance is hilarious. It isn't good, but somehow I still like it. Besides, who can forget the following exchange:
Duke: "You what to Pike's Peak?!?"
Bud: "I clumb it!"
Duke: "You didn't 'clumb it', you climbed it!"
I might even say he steals the film, other than George Kennedy, who is also funny in his bad guy role as Curley.
Senta August 16th, 2005, 03:27 AM Again I saw only three from the list - Chisum, The Train Robbers and The War Wagon. I like them, but I read your interesting posts about Big Jake and The sons of Katie Elder, and I never saw them, so I decide not to vote, before I can get and see them.
Regards,
Senta
kilo 6 September 6th, 2005, 07:09 PM Hello All
There is no more unifying factor then a common enemy, In the Undefeated it was a corrupt regime and in the US today its the huge challenge of dealing with the havoc wrought by Hurricane Katrina. I like it when folks pull together, it inspires hope for a better future. Kilo
Moonshine_Sally September 25th, 2005, 08:58 AM Not easy,not easy at all!Simply because I love his westerns.So I did not vote...sorry

I think that the SHOOTIST has a great ending. The way DUKE chose the time of his own dimise and typical courage to go out like a true man
DukePilgrim August 16th, 2006, 03:13 PM Hi All
I went for Chisum Great music and action throughout althrough it was close run between it and Big Jake.
The weakest in that batch would be The Undefeated.
Wish they would find some of that lost footage of Big Jake that Maureen O Hara talks about it would make a nice special edition DVD.
Mike
mark 1bigfan August 20th, 2006, 08:12 PM I like the sons of katie elder because of the constant referance to katie which you never see, which for me make the movie better, trying to picture what she would have looked like, gives to storie something special.
Plus the ongoing search to find out who killed there father and why is also good.
Tbone August 21st, 2006, 09:36 AM I like all these films but I'll vote for the War Wagon. I like the ending where the wagon gets busted up and all the Indians go scooping up the flour with the gold dust in it.
Tbone
Lt. Brannigan April 24th, 2007, 11:24 PM None on that list were any I have in my top ten but I chose The Comancheros because the chemistry between Wayne and Whitman was superb, I had only wished that they made more movies together.
ZS_Maverick May 23rd, 2007, 04:27 PM I'm rediscovering the polls!
I picked "The Comancheros", it's, IMO, one of the most fun movies The Duke did. Big Jake would have been my second choice, it's a very close second. Both movies are in my top ten favorites.
jjefford May 29th, 2007, 10:11 AM Of those films listed I'd vote for Big Jake, JW plays his usual strong character and teaches his sons a thing or two! But my favourite is Rio Bravo.
JJ.
DukePilgrim June 11th, 2007, 02:45 AM From the films listed Big Jake is the best followed by Chisum

Moonshine_Sally July 23rd, 2007, 10:00 AM Not easy,not easy at all!Simply because I love his westerns.So I did not vote...sorry
I voted somewhere between putting the earlier post and today but I cannot remember when I did.Weird :stunned: but that's me.Can't even remember what I voted for but propably North to Alaska or The sons of Katie Elder.
oliver13 August 2nd, 2009, 06:22 PM I love the Duke and Dean Martin together so for me it's The Sons of Katie Elder.
stagecoach50 August 3rd, 2009, 09:07 AM The comancheroes had some great Duke scenes.
kevin k November 9th, 2009, 10:25 PM i like/love them all the war wagon is great -the sons of katie elder has great story-sentimental,great action, great direction and great supporting cast-kennedy,gregory,fix,doucette,hyer,qualen,hopper, etc. etc.
RedRiverDee March 10th, 2010, 06:08 PM I chose the Sons Of Katie Elder, as a lot of my favourites were not on the list !!! Saying that it was a good movie, the chemistry / friction between the brothers, good storyline , think I've seen it probably five or six times over the years very enjoyable...
Dukesfan March 11th, 2010, 03:14 AM All of them where great movies! Maybe "The Undefeated" would be on the last place for me.
I choose "North to Alaska" as the best one, because it was so funny and two of my favourite actors (John Wayne and Stewart Granger) are in it! And Cappucine was so great together with the Duke...
ringo kid March 11th, 2010, 05:57 PM the comancheros is the pick of the bunch.i liked the chemistry between wayne and whitman.its the only film that i have watched that when it was over i rewinded the video tape and watched it again.i was about 10 at the time.i taught john wayne was so cool in that film.especially when he says to whitmans character monsoon you are lu lu.a classic.
Dukesfan March 15th, 2010, 07:21 AM i was about 10 at the time.
I was about 10 years old too, as I watched The Comacheros! It was the first John Wayne movie I ever watched, and since that movie I became a lifelong fan of the Duke.
alamo221 March 24th, 2010, 08:41 AM Gotta agree-BIG JAKE! Great cast and story, memorable lines, action, it has it all! Sons of Katie Elder next.
chester7777 March 25th, 2010, 07:33 AM Here it is, seven years after the thread was started, and still going strong.
I'm glad our newer members have found it and seen fit to participate and comment.
I'm amazed that Big Jake and The Sons of Katie Elder have such a large following, and are so far ahead of the rest of the movies.
I personally have a preference for North to Alaska, maybe because it's a lighter film with more humor in it, but I'm certainly going to pull out our copy of Big Jake, which we haven't watched in a good long while, and see what we think of it.
Chester :newyear:
patrick55 June 6th, 2010, 04:22 PM I think Chisum was the best, not just for the action but the entire story, the music and of course the fight, all the ingredients for a great movie.
DukePilgrim June 7th, 2010, 03:40 PM Still with Chisum as the best with Sons of Katie Elder and War Wagon as a close second & third choices. Big Jake has the potential but is let down by choppy editing and a weak supporting cast.
kilo 6 June 7th, 2010, 03:53 PM Sons of katie elder for the love but close 2nd would be big jake for the courage
alamo221 June 10th, 2010, 08:29 PM The Comancheros was a film I caught whenever it was on TV when I was a teen. Comedy, drama, adventure, romance and a hell of a title song. Great cast too-seemed almost like a film Duke would have made in the late 40s or early 50s. I still rank Big Jake as my tops, but lotsa love for Comancheros
HSColonel June 25th, 2010, 08:21 PM I picked Big Jake mainly because of how great Duke is with Richard Boone...wish they'd have worked together more.
