A favorite of director John Ford.

She was the first choice to play Anna in the film version of The King and I (1956) but Richard Rodgers did not want the role played by a "pirate queen".

She was having lunch with actress Lucille Ball the moment Lucy first saw Cuban musician Desi Arnaz whom she later married.

She is the only credited cast member of Miracle on 34th Street (1947) who is still alive.

She was born in Churchtown, a suburb of Dublin, Ireland.

She is portrayed by Liane Langland in Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter (1991) (TV).

She and John Wayne remained friends until his death. In her home on St. Croix, she had a wing she called the John Wayne Wing because he stayed there when visiting. It was badly damaged by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, some ten years after Wayne's death.

Personal Quotes
Speaking as an actress, I wish all actors would be more like Duke [John Wayne]--and speaking as a person, it would be nice if all people could be honest and as genuine as he is. This is a real man.

To the people throughout the world, John Wayne is not just an actor, and a very fine actor - John Wayne is the United States of America.

Charles Laughton and his wife, Elsa Lanchester, were never blessed with children. Years after he died, Elsa wrote her autobiography and claimed they never had children because Laughton was homosexual. That's rubbish. Whether or nor Laughton was gay would never have stopped him from having children. He wanted them too badly. Laughton told me the reason they never had children was because Elsa couldn't conceive, the result of a botched abortion she'd had during her earlier days in burlesque. Laughton told me many times that not being a father was his greatest disappointment in life.

I was talking to a director I knew and Ford just turned around and punched me on the jaw. There was no reason or explanation, and I walked straight out of the house and vowed I'd never speak to him again. Of course, I did, but it took a while. He never apologised and I never found out why he hit me.

I think he was a bitterly disappointed man. More than anything he wanted to be in Ireland or be a military hero. So every so often his anger would spill out and whoever was closest got the brunt if his anger. - On John Ford

Salary
Dance, Girl, Dance (1940) $12,400

Mini-Biography

In America the early performing arts accomplishments of young Maureen FitzSimons (who we know as Maureen O'Hara) would definitely have put her in the child protégé category. However, for a child of Irish heritage surrounded by gifted parents and family, these were very natural traits. Maureen made her entrance into this caring haven on August 17, 1920, in Ranelagh (a suburb of Dublin), Ireland. Her mother, Marguerita Lilburn FitzSimons, was an accomplished contralto. Her father, Charles FitzSimons, managed a business in Dublin and also owned part of the renowned Irish soccer team "The Shamrock Rovers." Maureen was the second of six FitzSimons children - Peggy, Florrie, Charles, Margot and James completed this beautiful family.
Maureen has an enviable string of all-time classics to her credit that include the aforementioned "Hunchback of Notre Dame," How Green Was My Valley (1941), Miracle on 34th Street (1947), Sitting Pretty (1948), The Quiet Man (1952), The Parent Trap (1961) and McLintock! (1963). Add to this the distinction of being voted one of the five most beautiful women in the world and you have a film star who was as gorgeous as she was talented.

Although at times early in her career Hollywood didn't seem to notice, there was much more to Maureen O'Hara than her dynamic beauty. She not only had a wonderful lyric soprano voice, but she could use her inherent athletic ability to perform physical feats that most actresses couldn't begin to attempt, from fencing to fisticuffs. She was a natural athlete.

In her career Maureen starred with some of Hollywood's most dashing leading men, including Tyrone Power, John Payne, Rex Harrison, James Stewart, Henry Fonda, Brian Keith, Sir Alec Guinness and, of course, her famed pairings with "The Duke" himself, John Wayne. She starred in five films with Wayne, the most beloved being "The Quiet Man".

In addition to famed director John Ford, Maureen was also fortunate to have worked for some other great directors in the business: Alfred Hitchcock, William Dieterle, Henry Hathaway, Henry King, Jean Renoir, John M. Stahl, William A. Wellman, Frank Borzage, Walter Lang, George Seaton, George Sherman, Carol Reed, Delmer Daves, David Swift, Andrew V. McLaglen and Chris Columbus.

In 1968 Maureen found much deserved personal happiness when she married Charles Blair. Gen. Blair was a famous aviator whom she had known as a friend of her family for many years. A new career began for Maureen, that of a full-time wife. Her marriage to Blair, however, was again far from typical. Blair was the real-life version of what John Wayne had been on the screen. He had been a Brigadier General in the Air Force, a Senior Pilot with Pan American, and held many incredible record-breaking aeronautic achievements. Maureen happily retired from films in 1973 after making the TV movie The Red Pony (1973) (TV) (which won the prestigious Peabody Award for Excellence) with Henry Fonda. With Blair, Maureen managed a commuter sea plane service in the Caribbean, "Antilles Airboats." She not only made trips around the world with her pilot husband, but owned and published a magazine "The Virgin Islander" writing a monthly column "Maureen O'Hara Says.

Tragically, Charles Blair died in a plane crash in 1978. Though completely devastated, Maureen pulled herself together and with memories of ten of the happiest years of her life, continued on. She was elected CEO and President of Antilles Airboats, which brought her the distinction of being the first woman president of a scheduled airline in the United States.

Maureen now lives quite happily in semi-retirement. Though her home is in St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, she also spends time throughout the year in New York, Los Angeles and Ireland. Fortunately she was coaxed out of retirement several times--once in 1991 to star with John Candy in Only the Lonely (1991) and again in 1995 in a made-for-TV movie, The Christmas Box (1995) (TV) on CBS. In the spring of 1998 Maureen accepted the second of what would be three projects for Polson Productions and CBS Cab to Canada (1998) (TV) - and in October, 2000, The Last Dance (2000) (TV).

Maureen O'Hara is still absolutely stunning, with that trademark red hair, dazzling smile and those huge, expressive eyes. She has fans from all over the world of all ages who are utterly devoted to her legacy of films and her persona as a strong, courageous and intelligent woman.

Without doubt, Maureen was Duke's greatest female co-star,
and it has always been widely believed, that there was more than screen
chemistry, between them!

Maureen said,
There was a chemistry between us, that you don't get very often,
in the picture business.....
It was there with Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn,
and with William Powell and Myrna Loy.
But I was tall and strong, and Duke was tall and strong.

Maureen made just 5 films with Duke,
Big Jake (http://www.dukewayne.com/showthread.php?t=1834) (1971) .... Martha McCandles

I agree 100% with you about the chemistry between these 2. She is the only costar male or female that didn't shrink into the background when in a scene with THE DUKE. She was without question the only female lead that ever even you were aware was in the shot when THE DUKE came into frame. She held her own and in the movies at times actually could put OLD DUSTY BEITCHES in his place and make him do that trademark hand on the hip eyebrow raised look of "WELL" I think that was the qoute form Mclintcok.
This board is great my favorite actor and hero John Wayne and my favorite actress and standard for the perfect woman Maureen O'Hara. is it Christmas or something?

Wish she was still doing movies. I didn't know that she hasn't done a film in 6 years. I know she is 86 years old, but I still think of her as a grand lady. Hope she is doing well today.

Very true! Apparently, they were VERY good friends away from the set, and that friendship extended far beyond the 5 films they did together.

I know, from reading (I think in Pat Stacy's book), that the Duke visited Maureen and her husband Charles Blair at their Caribbean island home, and when asked what he wanted for dinner, he answered, "Steak, steak, steak!"

And of course we all know that Miss O'Hara was instrumental in getting the U.S. Congress to authorize the President of the United States to present on behalf of the Congress a specially struck gold medal to John Wayne, which he was able to receive before his death.

Hi,

The Movie Reviews, for Maureen,
will be for theatrical movie releases only.
As with Duke's Movie Reviews, TV movies,
will not be included, unless requested.

IMDb recently, started listing TV movies,
in the Filmography section, which only confuses things.

Hi,

706707
Maureen's red hair, and green eyes, were perfect for Technicolor.
This process, was invented by Herbert T. Kalmus,
and was gaining favour in the late 1940's.
The impact of her striking red hair and beautiful eyes,
was such, that if any studio were considering
starring Maureen, he wouldn't hesitate, in offering
them the process!

Kalmus, actually used Maureen's image and colouring,
to literally market the process.

Films like The Red Head from Wyoming (1953)
may not be classics, but they sure showed off Maureen's Irish beauty.

After a string of flambboyant epics,
she became known as

THE QUEEN OF TECHNICOLOR

Hi Keith,
Thank you for great job which you are doing here. It's a pity for me that I haven't seen most of the reviewed films. I was lucky to see all her films with Duke and some otheres reviesw for them I'm waiting with great interest. It is one pirate movie with Errol Flynn Against all Flags. Maureen is absolutly brilliant there. And very strange movie Deadly Companions.

Vera

Hi Senta,

Thank you for your support.
I've seen quite a few of Maureen's films,
but unlike Duke's movies,
they are not, readily available.
As the Forum was set up for Maureen's fans too,
I was kinda hoping, that they, with their broader knowledge,
would add to the reviews, too!!!

I have already compiled the two films you mention,
and will post them , today and tomorrow,

Once again thanks!!

Keith,

Thanks for all your hard work!

As for those Maureen fans, maybe one of our members, who is also a member at the Maureen O'Hara forum, could let those folks know about the movie review forum here, and extend an invitation to join in the conversation. The last time I checked, that forum was not open to new members, so I personally cannot extend that invitation. Also, people that go there to at least read the posts (even if they cannot post themselves) might see the invite and head on over here.

Neat pictures of a beautiful lady! Are they ones that you own? Did you ever share on this message board about your visit with her a couple of years ago? Even if you did, you could probably tell about it again, now that we have a Maureen O'Hara forum.

Hi

http://www.dukewayne.com/imagehosting/thum_22545ced8450fd29.jpg (http://www.dukewayne.com/vbimghost.php?do=displayimg&imgid=185)

This was taken at Harrods a couple of years ago when Maureen O'Hara came on her European tour to attend book signings for her autobiography.

I had recently joined the Maureen O'Hara fan club and heard about the forthcoming event and arranged to go up to London and meet some of the people who would also be attending.

Getting there early I met a lady from Dallas who was well up in the society a lad from Norway who gave me an Irish magazine about Maureen O'Hara, Also a man and his wife great fans who came from Havant which is the first stop on the line from Portsmouth and who I later found out some time earlier had worked in the same building as I did.

There was a large crowd gathered in the book shop and after about two hours it was announced that Miss O'hara would be along but as she was unwell she would restrict her signing to one book only. I had a slight scare as I had previously bought the book in America and there was doubt that she would sign it.

On her arrival in a wheel chair she signed and spoke to everyone it was brilliant to meet a legend even better to be photographed with her.

The news story about the Newport Beach Film Festival has a lot of content. The part on John Wayne’s 100th has generated some great interviews.

What naughty thing did Maureen O’Hara whisper in John Wayne’s ear in “The Quiet Man” to get the reaction he gave. My fiend’s daughter said that John Ford had asked the Duke to ask it and Maureen has said she will never tell. Mrs. Blair would not tell me buther answer is classic.

What would you ask Maureen O’Hara if you were me? Here is her answer.

Visit My Entertainment News John Wayne Party (http://my-entertainment-news.com/archive/john-wayne%e2%80%99s-100th-birthday-celebration-part-2-news/)to see the video of John Wayne’s birthday party with Maureen O'Hara interview (http://my-entertainment-news.com/archive/john-wayne%e2%80%99s-100th-birthday-celebration-part-2-news/)talking about the John Wayne birthday celebration.

She starred with some of the most desirable leading men in her career:

Tyrone Power, John Payne, Rex Harrison, James Stewart, Henry Fonda, Brian Keith, Sir Alec Guinness and, John Wayne.

Of those 8 men, does anything stick out that she remembers about each of them. Which was the most difficult to work worth and most fun to work with.

Also if she had the chance and circumstances would have been different, would she have married The Duke?

datagrant,

First of all great job on the work you've done so far! I watched the clips you linked for us and really enjoyed them! Thanks!

Regarding your question, the roles were actually reversed. It was O'Hara, not John Wayne who did the whispering. I don't think your're going to get too far with the question as she has kept it a secret this long and I expect she will to the end; but I'd love to know myself what she whispered to the Duke too!

I have always had the impression that her relationship with John Wayne was special. They seemed to have a deep and genuine friendship.

I think Dakota has some good stuff for you there and I don't know as I could improve on his suggestion.

As a fellow Catholic though, I would very much like to know how her Catholic faith has informed her life and influenced her career.

Thanks again!

Hi datagrant:

As Tbone has indicated, I wouldn't waste my time asking her about the secret whisper. It'd be so lovely to know, but she's been asked many many times and sworn up and down just as many times that she's taking it to the grave. It was something special between she and Duke & Pappy Ford and she feels it's the only thing left in the entire film that really belongs to her and her alone. I kind of like it that way myself and would be somewhat disappointed if she ever spilled the beans - even as a part of me is terribly curious.

Being of the feminine and somewhat romantic persuasion, I'd want to ask her about her favorite & least favorite cinematic kisses. Those kinds of stories can be fun to hear. Clark Gable, one of the all-time great sex symbols, supposedly had horribly bad breath. Kathryn Grayson said that kissing Frank Sinatra was like kissing a monkey. The two kisses Maureen shares with Duke in The Quiet Man are some of my all-time favorites. I like DakotaSurfer's question as well.

You might also ask her what her most treasured memory is from all her years in film.

But you must be a pro and therefore have some good ideas of your own!

DukePilgrim

Her recent book covered a lot of ground but she always seem to duck against certain questions including The Quiet Man whisper. Poor Gerry Kelly when he interviewed her did not get much joy she will want to stick very much to script with no surprises.

Ford is a touchy subject with her but you may get results. Also, not getting an Academy Award may produce a interesting line of conversation.

She was not too inspired with Jimmy Stewart

You could ask her what roles she regrets not getting and would she do more theatre. Would she do things differently.

Being Charles Laughton protege could open up an interesting conversation.

Good Luck on your interview

Hi Gerry

To help you in your interview with Maureen

Some questions come to mind to ask Maureen about John Wayne

Where there any other John Wayne /Maureen O Hara films planned that did not come to fruitition for some reason.

She also mentions in her book that she thought Big Jake would be a better movie than than it panned out to be. She says footage was cut from this movie becuse of it length. Can she give any insight to what was shot or deleted from the final cut of the movie.

Also, I have always thought that her movie with Brian Keith The Parent Trap that Brian had similarities in style to the Duke. Was it something she was aware of. Could she see John Wayne doing a movie like Parent Trap.

What was her favourite movie to act in ?

If she hadnt been an actress what career path would she have taken?

Finally, without asking what she whispered in John Wayne's ear. Was in Gaelic or English? And if it was Gaelic did John Wayne understand what being said?

Hope this helps

Wow, what a great opportunity to suggest questions that would get asked of Maureen O'Hara. I would recommend that you ask which film starring John Wayne that she was not a part of does she look back and wish she had starred opposite Wayne. Hondo? Rio Bravo?

Also, I wouldn't give up on the question as to what she whispered to Duke at the end of Quiet Man. But here is how you do it....ask all your questions, wait until the end of the interview, when she is comfortable with you, and you are wrapping it up, then say, "one final question..." I know you have never wanted to answer this before..." (she will know where you are going) and then ask "is there anything you can tell us about what was whispered to John Wayne at the end of the Quiet Man?" Maybe she won't say what it was, but maybe she will at least say something about it, that would be a good capstone to your interview. Good luck!

Judging from the last interview I saw her give with Gerry Kelly I think she may not like interviews too much.

If true, this is rather surprising because to a large degree Duke and Jimmy appealed to the same group of fans.

I would also find it surprising. I've never heard anything negative about Jimmy Stewart - not even one word. I haven't spent a lot of time studying him, but you get ideas about people from seeing them on screen, and when those ideas are largely borne out by what you hear over the years you sort of form a pretty solid opinion of a person. According to her autobiography, Stewart was a bit of a "ham" who wasn't too keen on 'sharing" scenes with her.

She also talked about Brian Kieth in her bio, and one of the things she mentioned was that he had an acting style that was very similar to Duke.

If I remember right, Tycoon and The Long Gray Line were both supposed to have been Wayne-O’Hara vehicles, but both were made with others, for various reasons.

As far as the original question, I would agree with DukePilgrim's suggestions, particularly about the deleted scenes from Big Jake.

Hi All

In Maureen's book she says that Ford tried to get her sacked from Mr Hobbs takes a Vacation as somebody who was difficult and that after that was cleared up she was left under no illusions that:-

"I discovered that in a Jimmy Stewart movie that every scenes revolves around Jimmy Stewart. I was never allowed to really play out a single scene in the picture. He is a remarkable actor but not a generous one"

Later when she starred in The Rare Breed with Jimmy Stewart and when she stole a scene from him. Later in the day Stewart suddenly became unwell with a mysterious illness and went home.

"When I showed up for work the next day to finish the scene, new pages of script were handed out. The scene had been completely rewritten overnight and was now impossible for me to steal."

She regarded Rare Breed as a total flop and only praised Brian Keith who also starred in the movie.

The only other fact that I know about Stewart was that he parted company pretty disgracefully with director Anthony Mann after a dispute with how much credit Mann was getting for invigorating Stewart's career with the westerns he made with him in the 1950s. Ironically after the rift neither of them enjoyed the success they had when they worked as a team.

Jimmy was a good western star but I can't rate him in the same league as the Duke. I know John Wayne was loyal to his directors and actors who he worked with and I dont believe I have ever heard of him asking for a scene to be rewritten to give him a more dominant role.

I also wasn't enthused about that movie. It wasn't one of Jimmy's best, for sure.

What you guys are saying, and apparently what Maureen thought, was that Jimmy was narcissistic and selfish. Which is certainly at odds with his image in America. According to everything I've ever read or heard, he was just about as popular as the Duke with American film goers. Speaking for myself, I really did like him.

I'm not saying it, Stumpy, Maureen O’Hara is! There are certainly many people who would disagree with Ms. O’Hara about Jimmy Stewart, myself among them. In fact, outside of her book, I have never heard anything negative about Stewart. It should also be pointed out that she only worked with Stewart two times. I'd listen to others who were closer to Stewart before I'd swallow O’Hara's word, hook, line, and sinker.

Also, getting back on topic, I believe Ms. O’Hara also said in her book that there were several deleted scenes from The Wings of Eagles as well. I'd ask her for some more detailed information on exactly what those scenes were about.

A Girl Named Jen
April 23rd, 2007, 01:12 PM
I've heard a lot about the Irish temperament, and while I would have no cause to deny any of Maureen O'Hara's statements about Jimmy Stewart, I think we should take them with a grain of salt. Who knows how it happened? Ultimately, who really cares? The off-screen lives of actors don't really belong to us, anyway. We can only lay claim to what we see on-screen and how we respond to it.

I love Jimmy Stewart. He could act in anything and acted pretty much everyone else off the screen. I do have to admit that sometimes he could be a little hammy and chomp on a little scenery while he was acting, and some scenes in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance come to mind when I mention this...

I happen to be a big fan of all the Capra films, but I can appreciate that we all have different tastes around here. Those who didn't like some of the "Capra-corn" films might like Lost Horizon. It's got a different mood and feel from all the lovely (but schmaltzy) Mr. Smith/George Bailey/You Can't Take It with You type of stuff.

DakotaSurfer
April 23rd, 2007, 03:00 PM
Even though we don't lay claim to their lives off screen they do get involved politically and otherwise and use their popularity to sway people's opinions. With that said, when they speak about particular topics that affect my private life I take exception to what they say and then their opinions can come under scrutiny.

O'Hara may have acted well in some of Duke's and Stewart's movies but she had some varying opinions on these movies. She thought The Rare Breed had a lousy script, why did she even bother than. I'm sure they had right to refuse some scripts.

Good luck if you get the interview, I bet the questions will be all pre-selected.

I liked Jimmy's Westerns almost as much as the Dukes' and I'd put "Bandolero" and "Shenandoah" at the top of my favorite Westerns list.

There were several of his non-Westerns I liked almost as well, especially "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", "Shop Around the Corner", "Philadelphia Story", "Thunder Bay, "Glenn Miller Story", "Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation", and "Flight of the Phoenix". Great movies all.

Mike

A Girl Named Jen
April 24th, 2007, 10:54 AM
Yes, DakotaSurfer, they do get involved in politics. Wouldn't it be nice sometimes if they would just leave well enough alone? :glare:

I speak from personal experience when I suggest that it's best to try not to get too worked up about off-screen lives of actors. I've been guilty of idealizing people I admire in the past and have wound up being very disappointed in what I find out about them when I learn more. Then I found myself enjoying that person's contributions less. I've learned to separate that which I appreciate about the person from who that person might have been when he or she wasn't on camera. But naturally you're free to feel however you choose.

I'm a little disappointed to hear that Jimmy Stewart may have been less than gracious and generous as an actor. But even if it's true, it doesn't diminish how danged good he was, and how much I like to watch him. Now if I found out that he tore the wings off of butterflies to be mean, or plucked whiskers from kittens, or boiled babies, I might have to stop watching.

Maureen O’Hara was an absolute delight to talk to. I had asked about what to ask her and I tried to get those questions in. Mrs. Blair, Maureen O’Hara, was at her home in Ireland and I was in the kitchen of a friend who knows her well and had arraigned for me to chat with her. It was about ten o’clock our time and late afternoon her time.

We talked about how she came to America and how John Ford introduced her to John Wayne so long ago. She told me about writing a scene for “The Quiet Man” and if you go to My Entertainment News you can here her tell the story.

I will be editing the interview and putting it up on My Entertainment News in pieces. She was on the phone for over forty minutes and my friend thought I should let her go. She just wouldn’t stop talking and I loved every moment. Her voice is still to so strong and beautiful.

Our favorite John Wayne costar has been Maureen O'Hara. The fact that they only were in (5) five pictures together is hard to believe. The movies are:
Rio Grande
The Wings of Eagles
The Quite Man
Big Jake
McLintock!

With the movies that both actors have done, what movies would you like to have seen them together?

In a Duke movie, I would love to see Maureen O'Hara play with Duke in Rio Bravo. Now that movie would ROCK! Seeing O'Hara play Feathers would have been so much better, and I would have loved to see Dean Martin & Maureen O'Hara have some scenes together. I don't think they ever did anything together.

In a O'Hara movie, what would you think of them playing together in The Parent Trap. the only problem in that movie is it would have been better if the movie was made in 1951 instead of 1961. In 1961 he was around 54 years old. I think he would have been a little too old for that part.

What movies would you like to see John Wayne & Maureen O'Hara play together in?

I think Bacall did a great job in The Shootist and there was a tender chemistry that built between them as they got to know each other. O'Hara wouldn't be good for that part, because she would have tossed Books out on his caboose long before she called Marshall Thibidoe.

I agree with you that Rio Bravo and Parent Trap would have been great with the Duke and Maureen in it!

As to the discussion of Bacall being a better fit in the Shootist, I think she did very well and don't want to argue it.

But, from a "all things being right with the world" perspective, it would have been nice for Maureen to have been opposite Duke in his last film. She's such a quality actress, she could have played the part however they needed it IMHO.

Hi Cole

I have never heard that Jimmy Stewart was a racist. I think this might be the old Ford story of how he tricked Stewart into criticising Woody Strode role in Who Shot Liberty Valance by describing it as Uncle Tom.

The references in Maureen's book to Stewart are as follows:-

Ironically after the rift neither of them enjoyed the success they had when they worked as a team.

I had read that Mann was unhappy with the weak script that was 'Night Passage', and he wanted it reworked before shooting was to start. Also, Stewart insisted on playing the accordian and singing in the film, which Mann felt would stop the film dead in tracks whenever those scenes happened. Mann left the project and this began a riff between the two, that was never mended.

Mann was, in retrospect, correct. Night Passage was certainly the weakest of all Jimmy Stewart's 1950-era westerns. It's one saving grace is the beautiful technicolor photography, especially one long tracking scene, done from a train cutting thru the side of a mountain.

I think we've had quite a few new members since this thread last saw the light of day, so I thought I'd (bump) it back to the front.

I also see that we never commented on the topic the first time around . . . must have missed it . . . .

Here's another O'Hara vehicle where it might have been interesting to see Duke, as the interested, amorous neighbor in Only the Lonely.

I don't know if any of you caught it but on Turner Classics this weekend they had an interview of Maureen talking about her first experiences with JW and Ford. She really had a funny story to tell about the Duke.

Seems she was over at Fords house for dinner one night and JW was there. He had had a bit too much and Ford told Maureen to take him home and her wanted it done right then.

She didn't argue. They got Duke in the car and she got headed down the road but then realized she didn't know where he lived.

She did know of the golf clud he was a member of and started driving that direction when all of a sudden Duke yelled to pull over. They went to the front door of this house and Duke rang the bell. When the owner answered Duke walked in and said he wanted a drink and they poured him one. Maureen was horrified as she wasn't sure what the people would think.

Well Duke finished the drink they got back in the car and headed down the road.

How's that for a story?

Wow, Tbone, what a story! Somehow I missed it when you first posted it.

So they pulled over and he rang the bell at a total stranger's house??

And how did Maureen ever get him home to his house? Did she say?

And she still became friends with him! What a kick!

You know, we've seen that movie with Jimmy Stewart and Maureen, and I think you're right, Duke could have pulled off that role really well.

How about a remake of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (originally with Cary Grant and Myrna Loy), with Duke and Maureen? Yeah . . . I can see that one, too.

Hello everybody. Maureen O'Hara is still one of my favorite actresses from The Golden Age of Hollywood. I thought she was stunning in The Quiet Man, and Miracle on 34th Street is an all time classic. Somehow she has always maintained an air of class and respectability that some of her peers somehow lost along the way.

We were watching The King and I (1956) tonight, and in reading IMDb's trivia on the movie, I learned the following . . .

Darryl F. Zanuck first cast Maureen O'Hara as Anna because she was not only gorgeous but had a fine soprano voice and would not have to be dubbed. When Zanuck told her the news, she immediately sent sample recordings of her voice. Richard Rodgers agreed that O'Hara had a great voice but reportedly said, "No pirate queen is going to play my Anna!"

http://www.abc15.com/mostpopular/story/Grandson-of-actress-shot-at-front-door-of/SWdS59D2CEaO_XrxD8LSFw.cspx

Sheriff's Office authorities have confirmed the identity of a man shot in the chest at the front door of his Scottsdale home Wednesday night.

Authorities said 38-year-old Conor FitzSimons was shot near 136th and Rio Verde drives just before 10 p.m.

The suspect apparently knocked at the victim's door and asked to borrow a cordless phone to make a phone call.

When FitzSimons got the phone and walked back to the door, he was shot by the suspect, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

According to a family friend, the victim is the grandson of Hollywood actress Maureen O'Hara.

When asked about FitzSimmons' relationship with O'Hara, a neighbor, who did not wish to be identified, said, "I had seen her one time in the backyard and you know it was kind of funny."

Jim LeDune of Jiminey Kricket Pest Control said he's known and worked for FitzSimons for 10 years.

Detectives and Scottsdale police surrounded the lavish home for hours.

"I'm just shocked. My heart just goes out to him because he's been a customer and friend for a very long time," said LeDune.

Detectives do not have a description of the armed suspect, but searched a wooded area near the property.

It's unclear whether the shooting was random or if FitzSimons was targeted. He was airlifted to a local hospital in serious condition.

LeDune said FitzSimons recently added a fence to his property following a break-in at his home.

"He had some extra rod iron fence put up," added LeDune who said FitzSimons was well liked. "I don't know that anyone ever disliked him."

FitzSimons, according to LeDune, told him he was about to start working at a North Scottsdale beauty salon.

Right now we are working on the establishment of the Maureen O'Hara Legacy Center in Glengarriff - County Cork - Ireland. It's really going to be wonderful.

In March Loopline Films of Dublin are releasing a documentary on "The Quiet Man - Milestone or Millstone" with an exclusive interview from Maureen. The crew came to the US to interview fans and movie people here so we will be getting opinions from both sides of the pond. You will be amazed at the difference of opinion of the film.

A big fund raiser was held in NYC with Michael Flatley as the host on Sept. 30th. I have a You-Tube video of that event on the cover page. I have over 45 pages devoted to Maureen's life and career that has been published on the Internet since 1994. Maureen endorses my efforts and I keep in touch with her on a weekly basis. I have an interesting Maureen O'Hara story. I was in the Home Depot in Marina Del Rey, CA (this is near the beach, and close to Playa Del Rey, Santa Monica, Venice and Culver City, and is where entertainment types who live there go) and I happened to glance down an aisle. What I saw was a women in a big floppy hat and over-sized dark sunglasses, pushing a cart full of cabinet supplies and hinges! I came over to her and quietly said "Excuse me, but aren't you Maureen O'Hara?" and she replied in that lilting Irish voice..."WHO WANTS TA KNOW?..." We talked for nearly an hour about Duke, the old days, John Ford, all the old gang, and why she had that get-up on. It turns out she got stopped a lot in stores by folks just trying to "get into the business," or trying to push a project, so she started going out like that to be noticed less. While it's true that in that time (9/1997) a lot of younger folks would not have known who she was without prompting, that classic beauty was still VERY present at that age (77). Man, she has ALWAYS been a looker!

Hi Keith - I am the editor/designer for the official Maureen O'Hara website - Maureen O'Hara Magazine. The site has been on line since 1995 and it has been quite an adventure knowing Maureen and having her input and support in this endeavor. She's a very gracious, lovely lady.
I found the message forum this morning.

So glad you have a discussion group on Maureen. With her Legacy Center in the works, we can use all the publicity we can get.

Please visit her official website at

This was reported in the local Winterset newspaper that Maureen O'Hara
bought a 2500 dollar block from the birthplace.
Guess which movie she picked?
If you don't know the answer to this question go to the back of the line.
This was a front page story in the Madisonian on feb.3th.

I Love Maureen O'Hara almost as much as I love the Duke himself, and watching them together is always sheer joy.

I remember watching a clip from an interview with her, where she made some comment about JW, and her beautiful face crumpled and she teared up. I bawled.

I thought to honor the actresses who lend their voices to double in French Maureen O'Hara.

Here is a small assembly that connects the film and the actress. Twelve films are concerned, if you know other actresses, I would be delighted to discover them...

The Hunchback of Notre Dame : Françoise Page

How Green Was My Valley : Colette Adam

The Black Swan : Evelyne Séléna

The Spanish Main : Marianne Georges et Raymonde Devarennes (suivant les versions)

Sinbad the Sailor : Marianne Georges

Miracle on 34th Street : Camille Fournier

The Quiet Man : Lita Recio

Rio Grande : Claire Guibert

The Wings of Eagles : Jacqueline Porel

Our Man in Havana : Claire Guibert

McLintock : Brigitte Virtudes

Big Jake : Jacqueline Porel

Comanche Territory : Claire Guibert

Against all Flags : Nadine Alari

Buffalo Bill : Camille Fournier

Best regards

Indeed, some dubbing the Duke are not happy ..

Duke is usually doubled by Raymond Loyer. For The Wings of Eagles is William Sabatier ... wrong in my opinion.

'Quiet Man’ beauty Maureen O’Hara returns to Cong village

90-year-old actress will launch the inaugural ‘Quiet Man’ Festival
Irish Hollywood legend Maureen O’Hara is making plans to return to the village of Cong, County Mayo, 60 years after she filmed “The Quiet Man” alongside John Wayne in the same location. On August 26, she will launch the first ‘Quiet Man’ Festival.

O’Hara played the iconic role of Mary Kate Danaher in the 1950s smash-hit movie and this year marks the movie’s 60th anniversary.

Over the last 60 years Maureen O’Hara’s iconic movie has brought millions of tourists to the village of Cong and its environs eager to see where the movie was shot.

I like "The Quiet Man", but other movies Maureen are also interesting, especially the adventure movies...

What a pity that a director him has not given deeper roles. She had the temperament to play the characters even more subtle...

Interesting on re-reading "Tis Herself" that Maureen missed out on Friendly Persuasion because of Ford and The King & I because Rodgers & Hammerstein didn't want her. Would have been two interesting roles to see her in those movies.

Cast of The Quiet Man to reunite
By Louise Roseingrave
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2011

A REUNION of the original cast of The Quiet Man takes place next month
with the arrival of John Wayne’s family in Ireland.

Screen legend Maureen O’Hara will welcome her Quiet Man co-star Patrick Wayne, 72, the son of John Wayne, to Glengarriff to collect a prestigious award on his father’s behalf.

The Hollywood star’s daughter Aissa and granddaughter Jennifer are due to fly to Ireland to receive the Maureen O’Hara Foundation Legacy & Excellence Award alongside Patrick on behalf of their father.

Patrick featured in the 1952 movie as a child and the awards event will be the first time in many years that the two cast members will be in Ireland together.

Maureen O'Hara Excellency Awards (http://www.ianohio.com/life-in-ireland/news-and-events/845-attend-the-maureen-ohara-excellence-awards-10-1.html)

About 300 guests are expected to attend the presentation ceremony, which takes place at the Maritime Hotel in Bantry on October 1.

Highlights of John Wayne’s acting career will be presented in a photo montage before his family members are presented with the award on his behalf.

"This is a major coup, it’s the first time in many years that two members of the original cast, Maureen and Patrick will be in Ireland at the same time," Frank McCarthy, chief executive of the Maureen O’Hara Foundation said.

Wayne’s family will spend one week in Ireland, taking in Dublin, West Cork and Ashford and Cong in Co Mayo during their trip.
