View Full Version : Birthdays
ethanedwards September 27th, 2006, 07:54 AM Hi Kevin,
I notice we are still posting
a birthday 'celebration' for BrianB,
and probably still Monique
Perhaps, it would be more appropriate,
and tactful, if these were now deleted!
Best Wishes,
Robbie September 27th, 2006, 11:22 AM Yes I agree 100%

chester7777 September 28th, 2006, 02:46 AM On the other hand, it's a little reminder to all of us that life can be unexpectedly short. I don't know if Kevin can turn that feature off for certain members, or if it's an all or nothing proposition. In any case, he is the only one who can remove members. :headbonk:
For a short period of time, Brianb was quite a burst of energy. He had the time, due to the nature of his job, and the inclination, to be quite involved on the board. His untimely death cut that short, and was quite a shock to all of us. As far as Monique is concerned . . . well, let's not go down that road . . . :uhuh2: .
I do understand your point, however.

Kevin September 28th, 2006, 09:14 PM Hi guys,
I have gone in and completely removed Monique & BrianB from the site.
The post that both made are still on the site, it's just that under the name it shows "Unregistered".
There is no way to block the birthday display for members short or removing the user account.
chester7777 September 29th, 2006, 12:07 AM Removing the account without removing all their posts sounds like a perfect solution. Both of them were part of some lively discussions, and to remove their posts would leave some holes in some threads, making them seem like they wouldn't make any sense. Bravo!
Chester :newyear: and the Mrs. :angel1:
ethanedwards September 29th, 2006, 04:55 AM Hi Kevin,
I also agree with Jim, on that!
The posts were part of the structure of the conversation
and removing them, would destroy the continuity.
However I think it was appropriate
to change their status.
Thanks,
ethanedwards September 29th, 2006, 11:10 AM Hi,
On the subject of Anniversarys
3 members are celebrating their anniversary today
thespokenword(3), katweeks(1), rmoody(1) year(s)
Between the three of them ,
they have managed just ONE post,
One of them has been a 'member' 3 years!!!
and not posted at all!!
Kevin September 29th, 2006, 09:24 PM Some changes are coming soon in the way we handle inactive accounts which should make Robbie happy :jump:
ethanedwards October 1st, 2006, 06:22 PM Hi Everyone,
Well done, and thanks Kevin on your purge!!
I notice we now have fewer members,
but at least they have contributed!!!
Robbie October 1st, 2006, 07:00 PM Hi Kevin
Can I complement you on how you dealt with the brianb/monique situation. Could this also be done to inactive members who may have made a low number of posts?
I have noticed that there is a reduced membership on this board now which is great although there are still quite a few accounts in existance without posts, are they going to be deleted?
Just a point, other boards have a moderation period of perhaps 2 days, this means that members who register and post are prevented from having their posts displayed on the messageboard until they have had their post(s) moderated. This perhaps if implemented here could eliminate any trolls who may try to post rubbish on this site.
Kevin your correct, I am happy.
Thanks for your time and hard work
Robbie.

Thanks, and No

The pruning only effected members who haven't posted at all, and haven't visited the site in more than a year. The site will prune the membership once a month from now on. We'll leave it as is for now. The zero post accounts are the ones that are a year old or less.

As for the spamming (& trolling) I am moderating the sign up process and that has caught a half dozen trolls this week.
Robbie October 1st, 2006, 07:57 PM Hi Kevin
Regarding the first point again, I feel that there are too many messages on the homepage of this messageboard stating that X is celebrating his or her birthday/anniversary. 99% of the time I have never heard of the member due to lack of posts or no post which effectively demeans this section of the board. That is why I think renaming old accounts that have be inactive for years with limited posts under the category of 'unregistered' to be a good idea.
Just a thought.
Thanks again
Robbie

I agree Robbie,
I made this observation earlier.
chester7777 October 2nd, 2006, 06:42 AM Now, with only 806 members, we get to congratulate the 1000th member again! :D
Of course, with members being pruned each month, it might take a while to get there.

Robbie October 2nd, 2006, 08:51 PM Hi Chester
Yes you are correct it will take a little longer to get to 1000 members as there are quite a few more members due for elimination at the end of this month due to having no posts. I think its great that these inactive accounts are being eliminated; it streamlines the board and makes it more slick and less clustered.
One point I would like to make is that this board has always been a small in terms of membership but this is not necessarily a bad thing. For instance there are many positives to take from our small but loyal membership:
1. Its truly global with regular members from America, UK, Australia and Russia etc.
2. Everybody is friendly and this board is free from much of the guttural behaviour that corrupts other boards.
3. Many members add a lot to this board via paintings (Graham), picture games (Mark and Baron) or movie reviews (Keith) which really adds a great wealth to this board and makes it really great.
For me the real lifeblood of this board comes from the following members:
1. Chester (Mr and Mrs) - Moderator - Been on the board since the beginning and has accumulated an astronomical number of posts.
2. Mike aka Hondo - Moderator - Also been here since the start with a very impressive number of posts.
3. Arther - Moderator - Been here for a couple of years now and has really stormed the board with his posts.
4. Chance aka Graham - The original who adds a lot to the board via participating in paintings of particular members etc and really has a gift within this field.
5. Smokey - Another original who adds a lot to this board via her many contributions and I think she is the highest positioned female within the postings league.
6. Sxiper - Joined not long after me and has really shot up the posts league with many great contributions.
7. Keith -aka Ethanedwards - Movie reviews moderator - Has the thankless task of organising all of Dukes movies together and has done a great job at it as well. While he has only been on this board a short while his posting rate is phenomenal and he has cemented his stature within this board.
8. Kevin - Founder and moderator, who does a superb job running and maintaining this superlative board.
9. Popol Vuh - One of the quieter members, however he has been consistent for some years now and his posts are often thoughtful and intelligent.
10. Ringo Kid - I don't know much about this member however he has taken the board by storm with his many posts.
11. William T Brooks - Has posted many good articles both here and on the IMDB promoting the Duke, he has posted quite a few times as well and is now well over the 1000 mark.
12. Jay J. Foraker - Again this is a member I know very little about although this is someone who has added a great deal to the board.
13. Stumpy - Been around quite a while now and has shared many interesting stories with us as well as adding great value to the board.
14. Dukefan1 aka Mark - Not one of the bigger posters but he has been around from the start and adds an extra dimension to the board via the John Wayne picture and trivia games.
15. Kilo aka Murray - Good solid poster who has racked up quite a few posts during his short time here.
16. Senta - I know nothing at all about this member although her high number of posts speaks for itself.
So there you have it, I know I may have missed out one or two and for this I apologise but all in all we have around 20 solid members on this board which isnt bad when one takes into consideration the time and hard work many members put into keeping this board going.
Robbie

Bek October 2nd, 2006, 09:40 PM I couldn't agree with you more Robbie, those 20 members make the JWMB what it is, and 20-30 solid members is a fairly good achievement.
chester7777 October 2nd, 2006, 10:51 PM You brought up some good points as usual, Robbie! And of course we count you in that 20 - 30 stalwart members who add spice and flair to the board.
I suspect that there might be quite a few lurkers, who enjoy reading the many posts during frequent visits to the board, even if they never post. I think Kevin's method of pruning will maintain regular "visitors" while culling out those who never returned after joining. I would also guess that among the members who were pruned, there might be some desireable JW-oriented user names available to others again.

ethanedwards October 3rd, 2006, 04:04 AM Hi,
Great post Robbie, and it sums up,
probably most of our sentiments too.
I agree, with Jim.of course you too should be
included in that list!
Jim, made a good point about usernames,
it's a pity, there isn't some way,
some of the more desirable names,
could be extracted, and posted
somewhere!!, making it a bit easier,
for Newbies, to choose a username
