This was Maureen O'Hara's first feature film role since Big Jake 20 years earlier. However, (with the exception of three tv movies) she never acted in another feature film after this.

The first date picnic at old Comiskey Park was filmed not long after the final baseball game was played there on September 30, 1990. The new Comiskey Park (now known as U.S. Cellular Field) can be seen across the street from the old park in the establishing shot. Demolition of old Comiskey Park began in April of 1991.

Chris Columbus wrote the script with actress Maureen O'Hara in mind for the role of the mother. Once casting had begun, he insisted on having O'Hara play the role and began a search for her. What he didn't know was that she had long since retired and was living on St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. Knowing her brother Charles B. Fitzsimons was still in the movie industry, Columbus contacted him and had a script sent. O'Hara's brother then sent the script to her and said, "This you do!" After reading the script herself, Maureen contacted her brother and said, "This I do!"

Maureen O'Hara refused to sign the movie contract, though she loved the script, until she met co-star John Candy. Fortunately the two of them instantly created a strong rapport and she hastily signed on the dotted line.

The producers of the film did not include a trailer on location for Maureen O'Hara in their budget. John Candy was furious that the producers were showing someone of her stature such disrespect he gave her his own trailer. The producers finally caved in because they couldn't have Candy, the star of the film, without his own trailer.

The part of Doyle was originally meant to be played by Roddy McDowall.

John Candy In His Best Role... More Serious Than Usual

Probably John Candy's best role on film... not an all-out comedy laugh-fest as most would expect... it's actually a kind of sweet, sentimental story (somewhat influenced by the classic film/play "Marty" starring Ernest Borgnine) about an aging bachelor cop (Candy), his overbearing mother (Maureen O'Hara, just as sassy on screen as in her heyday) and the plain, young mortician with whom he falls in love (Ally Sheedy). Yeah, right... Ally Sheedy is "a little plain"... just like she was in "Breakfast Club". Why, oh why so they always have to cast these drop-dead gorgeous movie stars as "plain" people. (Michelle Pfeiffer in "Frankie and Johnny"... anyone buy THAT one?) Anyway, Sheedy and Candy do have a sweet chemistry together... the movie is a very NICE movie... there is a little bit of a dramatic subtext that could have been explored a little deeper... but the film chooses to keep the tone light... maybe *too* light. Several scenes of Candy imagining terrible accidents happening to his mother due to his absence seem a little too "cute-sy"... but I guess they didn't want to freak audiences out by getting too realistic.

Being a John Candy fan, I'm not sure how this movie slipped our attention. Thanks for bringing it to our attention, Keith! Now we have more reason to see it, since Maureen O'Hara is in it.

The price difference between Amazon and Deep Discount DVD is significant on this film, with DDD selling it for $8.99 and Amazon for $17.99 (both offer free shipping, with conditions at Amazon).

This is a great film.First time I saw it though I did not know that Maureen O'Hara was in it so that was a major and very pleasant surprise to find out!

This was a great movie. I saw it at a theater when released way back when, and I happen to be in Chicago when the two ball parks were standing side by side.

It was so good to see Maureen and Anthony together again even it was the last time. They were great together, and have such great chemistry. Maureen has great chemistry with anyone she's with on screen.

It is one of my favorites and I do have it on VHS & DVD. I almost miss the DVD release when it first came out.

....And it is out on DVD. I have it and it is really good. I was in Chicago when both White Sox stadiums were still standing. I wish I took a picture of it. That would have been a keep sake. Good Movie!!!

Well, we took full advantage of the better price on Deep Discount DVD and ordered this film, and watched it for the first time ever. Though our kids have some memories of Maureen O'Hara's characters in John Wayne movies being "grumpy" (they're right), Only the Lonely shows her in a much nastier mode, although she does soften by the end of the movie.

It's an interesting mix of romantic comedy, along with some very poignant scenes and topics. John Candy was completely capable of playing the romantic leading man, and it is a terrible shame he died so young. It would have been interesting to see where his career might have taken him. Definitely a movie we enjoyed and will watch again.

Jim Belushi was in rare form in this movie. He plays the wise guy so well. His brother John would have been proud. This movie in my opinion has an all star cast, and the story is so good. If I had to recommend a family comedy for all ages, then this is the movie for all to see. The price is right at around $10. But most of all you get to see the lady again, Maureen O'Hara.

Maureen's role was written especially for her after the director Chris Columbus has seen "The Quiet Man".

Maureen, who had not turned over many years and was hesitant and after reading the script, agreed. The reception of the cast and crew was very warm and we can say that the film was well received.

This is the last film made by Maureen for the big screen.

Thank you for these details ... It is true that Chris Columbus wrote the role of Rose for Maureen and the script was perfect. She was therefore in good conditions to work ...
In her book, she pays tribute to the team who was very friendly with her.
She was very affected by the death of John Candy....

Maureen and I were provided out-takes from "Only the Lonely" by Chris Columbus. There are several great scenes that made the cutting room floor; the best is the dance sequence of Anthony Quinn and Maureen where he whirls her around and then does a dip. It's SO cute. Another great scene was Maureen at the grave of her late husband, talking to him. Very dramatic.... fantastic scene.

Sometimes we wonder why some scenes are cut ......

She was in great form at the time...she had just turned 70 and looked terrific ans she was very nice...Candy took great care of her and the story that he gave her his trailer was true...and stopped produtin for like 2 days till that all got straightened out..Anthony Quinn was a real pro and nice man...Belushi's nuts...But he's around Chicago all the time...Candy was nice...quiet...smoked like a fiend...The house he and Ms Ohara "ived" in is about 1/2 block away from the tavern where the scenes were shot..I think it was called O'Neals in the film.Those 2 locations are 3 blocks south of Wrigley Filed....Home of the 1908 National League Champs...and they aint done nothin since....:ohwell:..And yes it was my understanding the script was written with her in mind....Those were the days before cell phones,phone cameras etc..IF only I had taken some pictures !!!
