Nelson Riddle's instrumental recording of "Lisbon Antigua" (an ancient Portuguese melody) was already on the Hit Charts before this film was made. Republic publicity sent out a story that "Director/Producer Ray Milland took a recording of the music with him and had a Portuguese orchestra adapt it for a sequence in the picture".

Lisbon is the local for this adventure romance, starring Ray Milland and Maureen O'Hara. It is beautifully photographed on location and the story is rousing and the intrigue suspenseful. Claude Rains, is the thief who Sullivan hires to get back her elderly husband, a millionaire, who has been kidnapped by the Chinese. Rains, is of course, suave, devious, and wonderful as the man of many tastes, including beautiful young women. He has always been good in such a part, as he was in Notorious, as the Nazi spy. Ray Milland is always dashing, elegant and just nice to look at. His part as the smuggler gives him a chance to use a little comedy, especially when pursued by a beautiful young woman who Raines employs as a "secretary." She is enamored of Milland and she tries to help him escape the hands of Sarafin, who works for Raines and wants to kill Milland to keep the girl for himself. Maureen seduces Milland, but he rejects her advances after she tells him she wants her husband back "dead." He returns the husband alive, and Raines is picked up by the police for the smuggling that Milland was doing all along. Nice twists all around. Milland is still so wonderful to look at and listen to, it is not surprising that all the women are in love with him. He directs this film with just enough pace to make it interesting, and the O'Hara character is smooth and crafty. Beautiful to look at scenery only adds to the pictures appeal.

It never ceases to amaze us how many movies we have never heard of, and many of Maureen's titles which Keith has brought forth are among them. As we check the availability, it seems that unfortunately, these titles are sometimes unavailable, and sometimes difficult to obtain or very expensive. This particular title is one - available on VHS, from Amazon, used and new, starting at $99.99.

As we've said in the past, the more of an interest that develops, the DVD folks should be pumping them out at more reasonable prices. Few people imagined two years ago what John Wayne movies would be available today, at the prices they are. I imagine it would be interesting to be a fly on the wall, watching some of these DVD producers searching archives of old films, looking for things to put out on DVD. It would seem it would be a pretty low cost venture, considering all they have to do is copy films already made and they probably have a computer program that cleans up the film considerably, once they digitize it.

May be it will happened to Maureen movies too. It seems to me that the interest to old movies are raising. Even here in Russia more and more titles are available.

Single film of 1955 but completed in early 1956, the film was shot in Portugal. Maureen played the role of a nasty. There were many problems during the filming, but the film was completed in 30 days ...
