Senta January 3rd, 2006, 09:54 AM Hi Keith,
May I suggest a good old Stagecoach. Everybody have seen it and may be it is not all said about this wonderful film.
I have a special reason for that suggestion. It will be shown on big screen in one of our theaters on January,9, so I will have the opotunity to see it as it was made.
Regards,
Vera
William T Brooks January 3rd, 2006, 10:08 AM Vera,
How lucky you are to be able to see "Stagecoach" on the Big Screen! :fear2: The last time I saw it that way was back in 1940 as a young Kid, and that is the way it should be seen.
Bill :cowboy:
Senta January 3rd, 2006, 10:18 AM Bill,
I feel myself lucky too. I was so exited when I found it. We have some famous old films shown in one of our theaters (it is something like cinema club), but it is first time I saw Duke's or Ford film in their monthly list. So I try to gether all my friends to that event. It will be shown only one time.
Regards,
Vera

Bill,
You got your passport ready? Just how far can your plane take you? You deserve to see Stagecoach on the big screen, and then you can bring Vera back to the States, so we can meet her too! Of course, maybe you can stop off in the UK and pick up a couple of buddies there as well.

Senta January 4th, 2006, 07:39 AM Hi,
All who want to see Stagecoach on big screen are very welcome here. Now and always! :D You gave a good idea, Chester,
Sincerely yours,
Senta
William T Brooks January 4th, 2006, 12:57 PM Chester and Vera,
I would love to do that BUT, I only have 4 Hours of Fuel on board and that would put me about 1000 Miles out in the Atlantic and I would have to PADDLE the rest of the way to the U.K. :fear2:
Oh for the days of that Old B-29 in the 1950s I could get there Non-Stop! :jump: May-Be I will win the Loto and can Get A "Gulfstream 5" and we all can go and after the Film , all of us come back and have a Week at the 26 Bar Ranch, Chester will bring the Sausa Commemorativo Tequila!!!

Popol Vuh January 4th, 2006, 08:43 PM Hi Keith.
At the rate you are reviewing you will soon have covered them all. I would like to see a review of "Hatari!" since it is such an oddball in the collection. Besides it is one of my favorite movies.
Regards

If you win the lotto, I hope we will spend more than a Week at the 26 Bar Ranch :D !
I'll be watching for that tequila on sale ;) .
heh hem . . . <clearing throat> . . . um, movie review requests . . . um . . . how about Wings of Eagles? Another John Wayne/Maureen O'Hara vehicle, although Ms. O'Hara's part in this movie is not as large as in some others. It is interesting to see how JW's character ages over several decades as part of the story line.
Good . . . did my part to get this back on topic :) !

WaynamoJim January 5th, 2006, 10:25 PM Hey Keith,
How about doing a review of Rio Bravo? Unless you've done it already but, I didn't see it. I'd like to see who some of the uncredited cast members were. Especially the ones whose characters were working for the Burdette, Nathan Burdette.
ethanedwards January 20th, 2006, 01:32 PM Hi Popul,
Thanks for the request, and I've now posted a review on
HATARI!

ethanedwards January 21st, 2006, 08:07 AM Hi Chester and WaynamoJim,
THE WINGS OF EAGLES and RIO BRAVO
now posted,
ethanedwards January 22nd, 2006, 01:56 PM Hi,
Popul Vuh, amongst one or two others,
has requested, that we rate each Movie Review,
from 0-10,
it will be interesting to see how we all think!!
So, from now on, can we rate the films, when we discuss them,
thanks,
Popol Vuh January 22nd, 2006, 05:06 PM Hi Keith.
No more requests but I wish you could speed up the process a little bit. I have a nagging suspicion that you have spent several minutes of the last couple of days doing other things besides writing reviews and posting.
ethanedwards January 22nd, 2006, 05:28 PM Hi Popul Vuh,
You are a cheeky monkey, and you make me laugh, but I get your point!!
I've actually spent hours and hours doing this,as you you can tell, and I came to the conclusion, that when the new Forums were formed, there seemed little point,
having them sit there empty!!
No one can comment on the films, until they're posted!
The original idea, of doing 2 or 3 a week, went out the window,
when the new forums, were opened.
I feel that once they're all in there, our members,
can browse, and post in their own time.
Popol Vuh January 22nd, 2006, 06:20 PM Well in other words, good work Keith :)
Robbie January 23rd, 2006, 08:02 PM I think it would be a better idea to slow down, most of dukes movies have been put on now and no real meaningful conversations about each movie have arose.
I appreciate what you are trying to do, however I feel it is getting lost in transition.
:agent:
Robbie January 23rd, 2006, 08:20 PM Just a suggestion EE, can you include information regarding deleted scenes for each movie you input as it might be quite interesting.
:agent:
chester7777 January 24th, 2006, 02:18 AM I like Robbie's idea of commenting on deleted scenes.
You might also include memorable quotes from the films. Sometimes IMDb lists them, also.
Chester :newyear:
ethanedwards January 24th, 2006, 06:16 AM Thanks both,
Your wish is my command.
Good idea, I'll go back over them all, and post any quotes I pick up.
I have also posted any deleted, scenes I know about, but to be quite honest,
there are not many, if any, mentioned, in the books.

Hi,
The reason, I have been posting so many films, so quickly is this, and the
answer quite is simple.
Once the films are in place, we can come back to them, one or two per week,
thus bringing them back into discussion.
This will then be the same, as we planned before.
I am getting requests, and we cannot comment, on films, if they're are not already in place.
I also notice, even whilst I was away, other threads have popped up ,about films we haven't covered, which fragments the subject.
This is the problem, we had before, and when a member, wanted to research a film, there were loads of different threads, in different forums.
By forming the new forum, we have eradicated this problem, and we have in fact moved older threads across here, so that they all fit under the correct banner.
To conclude, I don't actually find a problem with the current strategy,
and in any case, as most of the major films are now covered,
I shall continue, now at about 3 films per day, until the task
is completed.
Best Wishes
Moonshine_Sally January 25th, 2006, 02:11 PM I think you've done a marvellous job ethanedwards. It's just going to take time to read through them and think about what I might have to say.Might be tomorrow might be next year that I post something...The forum has gotten better with it as now films are easier to find.IF you've got the time and energy...keep up the great work.Have one on me next time you're in your local!Cheers,Liliane
arthurarnell January 28th, 2006, 02:52 PM Hi Keith
Reading your list of Dukes minor roles I notice you include Salute among what you call walk on or minor parts. This film is of importance for two reasons the first in that I believe it was the first time that he spoke on film, and second that his role although supporting was as equally large as Ward Bonds.
It is easy to dismiss films such as Fords early Mother Machree, Annie Laurie,The Black Watch and Four Sons, also Noahs Ark and the Great K&A Train Robbery because its doubtful if you would spot John Wayne even if you knew he was in it.
I also agree with College Coach as he has a solitary walk on part lasting a second Central Airport and The Deceiver in which he played Ian Kieths corpse.
Others like the Life of Jimmy Dolan and Baby Face form another case in the case of the former John Wayne gives a very remarkable performance unlike anything I have ever seen from him as a young boxer going in to fight a far better fighter. it is certainly worth seeing and if it is worth seeing then surely it is worth reviewing. In the case of Baby face thuis film is slowly being recognised as one of the important films of the 1930s and again this might make it worth reviewing.
Many of the members of the messege board have little or no knowledge of his early films and I think you might be surprised at the number of people who are interested.
Maybe a slight review of your reviwed list might be in order.
Regards
Arthur
ethanedwards January 28th, 2006, 03:57 PM Hi Arthur,
Many thanks for your comments, and it's nice to get a second opinion.
I was in two minds about SALUTE and I shall now include it along with
THE LIFE OF JIMMY DOLAN
However,I had not included BABY FACE in the list,
as I have already got that one in the system.
I like that film, and when you realise, for many years it was censored!!
As you concur, the others, offer no significant reason, to be reviewed,
and I shall now, fine tune the list.
Your thoughts are always welcome,
Best Wishes,

Good Morning Arthur,
The reason is, I haven't got there yet!!

there is so much work involved!
I'll post it up later, it is ready,
P.S. Now done!!

ethanedwards February 4th, 2006, 06:58 AM Update
The are now around 50 movies, still to review,
I have already compiled them, and will continue to post them
at about 3 a day.
Each day, to vary the reviews,I have arranged to post one 'A' type movie,
and 2, 'B' types, this indeed, has taken, some time to arrange.
When they are complete, it will be good, to choose,
2 or 3 a week, for extended discussion and comments,
Best Wishes,
arthurarnell February 4th, 2006, 09:46 AM Hi Keith
No criticism meant or implied. Like everyone I think you are doing a great job and where you find the time to do it baffles me. But keep it up.

ethanedwards February 4th, 2006, 10:41 AM Hi Arthur,
Thanks, no offence taken.
However, working for yourself,
does indeed, have its advantages,
and as luck as it, I take January off,
so I have already compiled all the reviews,
and all I need to do now, is post them, regularly,
untill mission, completed.
Thanks again, for your support,
Best Wishes,

Hi Sue,
Thanks, and it can be difficult.*
However, 9 times out of 10, it's OK!*
I also source from the New York Times, and other sites,*
particularly, if IMDb, don't include a biography.*
As you say no one is a complete knowledge on Duke,*
and we learn day by day.*
We were not around, at the time, so we have to rely*
on the written word, all be it IMDb, NYT, or say*
John Wayne:American, or whatever.*
*
When writing my own pieces, I use up to 12 books,*
and pick pieces out of them.*
It takes, up lots of time, but if the end result, encourages*
members to post, and enter discussion, then the project is worthwhile,*
just look at some of the members names, recently,
that have suddenly popped up!!

Update
Hi,
Just to keep everyone in the picture!!!so to speak,
I now have only 10 films to review,
and I'd like to thank everyone for their support and comments.
In compiling these reviews and 'Pals of the Saddle',
it's not just the case of copying stuff, it's not that easy, or simple.
The articles, have to be edited, highlighted,
and placed in the forum, in an appealing, and easy-to-read format,
otherwise, it would be repetitive and un-readable!
In IMDb, Yahoo, and the New York Times, the sub-sections have to be
opened, so that the extra information can be extracted,
otherwise, Full cast, stunts, Trivia, etc, would be overlooked!
Sometimes IMDb, doesn't have a Biog, particularly for the older movie stars,
and therefore this information, has to sourced elsewhere.
I use up to 12 books, and quotes, that are included, are cross referenced,
across them all.
Mr and Mr. Chester mentioned, about the earlier movies.
In most cases, I have a copy, but if I don't,
I ask if anyone has got or seen the film.
No single one of us is a complete knowledge of Duke,
and all our information, has to be sourced.
Mistakes can be made, and it's easy to make them,
but then that's what this forum is for, to discuss and comment.
Hopefully, we can strive, and trust that the information, is correct.
However, instead of just looking for the mistakes,
and nit-picking at the information, which is easy to do!!
Let us all, look at the total picture, and think,
we wouldn't be able to comment at all,
if this information wasn't posted, and made available!!
Thanks for your support,
Jay J. Foraker February 17th, 2006, 11:29 AM Bravo, Keith! I can see from the overwhelming amount of information you have posted that there has been a lot of time and effort on your part devoted to compiling and correlating all of this. I, for one, have found a number of trivia items about Duke and related subjects that I was unaware of, so keep up the terrific work. Thank you.
Cheers - Jay :D :D

Well, I have finally completed the Movie Reviews,
having posted the very last one today.
The reviews total, 116 Movies, and 3 TV specials.
27 were exlcuded.as Duke's Minor Roles.
It has taken many hours of work, to compile them,
from the sources that are available.

However, trying to avoid ones,
which have been over discussed, over and over, in the past.

For further interest, I have also where available,
added a photograph link on the Reviews.

Yes, the photos are adding so much more to the movie reviews and " Pals in the Saddle" reviews. Keep up the Good Work! ! !
Another thought, how much trouble would it be to add the new photos into the board's

ethanedwards October 13th, 2006, 05:29 AM Hi Vera, Jim, and all,
This time, I'm using a different criteria.
Some movies, even recently, such as Hatari
and They Were Expendable, have had considerable exposure.
Indeed films like The Alamo, The Shootist etc
have all had a fair share of discussion.
I'll be going through the Movie's
and selecting one's which have had minimum replies,
and North to Alaska, is one of them.
Hope that makes sense?

OK,
Now that Duke's Movie Discussions,
is now placed on the Board Index,
If any member has any Duke movie questions, please ask,
open a topic, and away we go!
Any new topics, and questions, regarding Movies
can be started here.
When the questions have been answered
the threads can later be moved into the dedicated Movie thread.
I think this is the only way,
we can keep new questions to the top,
and at the same time, maintain, the continuity.
ethanedwards November 18th, 2006, 08:08 AM Hi,
I have gone back through all the movies,
and in most films have been able to enter
the Filming locations.
They make interesting reading,
and remarkable how many films
were made in so few locations.
The main locations are listed in the
Movie Forum, and with some of the major movies,
I have highlighted the locations,

Hopefully this will go a long way,
to answering questions, about
certain locations

Did you ever review two older movies in which Duke is alleged to have been in namely 'Black Watch' and 'Noahs Ark'.

ethanedwards February 12th, 2007, 05:50 AM Hi Robbie,,
Thanks for you interest, and no I didn't.
Take a look at this post I made regarding this,

ladybug April 8th, 2007, 12:53 AM My brain and I have problems remembering movie and song titles. What was the name of Mr. Wayne's movie where his friend George (I believe) was at the claim site working the camp and Mr. Wayne had to go get his girlfriend and ended up bringing the french girl back with him on the boat? Then the mayhem was unleashed. I have always enjoyed that - he was very funny in that movie - and the young singer was his little brother. Good one.
gt12pak April 8th, 2007, 12:56 AM The movie was North to Alaska and the song was sung by Johnny Horton. An excellent movie IMO!!!
SXViper April 8th, 2007, 02:33 AM The young singer was Fabian. Very good movie, one to add to your collection if you don't have it.
ladybug, on a side note, welcome to the site. Glad to have you here. We all look forward to getting to know you alittle better.
ethanedwards September 20th, 2007, 08:03 AM Hi,
Elly has complied a list of Duke's Featurettes,
which were mainly 16mm features,
which were made about, 'The Making of'
and 'Behind The Scenes' of Duke's movies.
Duke's Featurettes- The Making of Duke's Movies ([Only registered and activated users can see links])
There were also another 2 additions to Elly's list,
notably, Hatari! and Legend Of The Lost
If anyone knows of anymore, please let us know.
ethanedwards August 11th, 2008, 07:30 AM Previous to compiling the Movie Review section,
new threads on the same films, were commenced, in some cases,
almost every day, which led to fragmentation.
Some movies for example, in various bit and pieces of threads,
ended up with a dozen or so threads, sometimes asking the same questions!
I notced The High And The Mighty, and The Alamo,
both had a dozen or more threads, all about those films!
I have now gone back to the beggining of time so to speak,
and merged all the various threads into one 'super' thread,
and now linked that thread into the opening page
of the dedicated Movie review.
Hopefully this will tidy things up and eliminate
the need to search for previous earlier thread.
