View Full Version : The Quiet Man, Unedited, Wanted

I have already purchased two VHS and one DVD version of The Quiet Man, and all have been edited, and in such a "non-professional" manner that the edit is obvious.

In all copies that I can find now, the scene where Mary Kate gets her rear end walloped has been cut out. Very PC, I guess. Just after an older woman hands Wayne a "stick to beat the lovely lady with", the music cuts (jumps) and the actual spanking is edited away. I remember that the scene used to be in the film from years ago.

I recently saw on AMC (cable) their showing of Donovan's Reef. On that channel, the church scene where "Silent Night" is sung in both English and Polynesian was cut out of all the viewings they showed over the entire week.

John Wayne films being edited for Politically Correct content?!? To me, the concept is akin to book burnings.

Anyway, I would like to purchase a VHS or DVD UNEDITED version of "The Quiet Man".

Any recommendations?

Are other Wayne films also being cut-up for modern viewing?

I don't ever remember a "spanking" scene in The Quiet Man. I know Sean gives her one slap as they are about to head to Castletown to shop. I've been watching the movie for about 15 years, so I can't testify to earlier copies.

I think AMC is editing the movies for time content rather than for political correctness. They are doing this for other movies too. Thety started doing it when they added commericals.

I remember that scene from when I saw "The Quiet Man" back in the Sixties or Seventies. I never gave it another thought until watching a brand new DVD, and the music "skipped". I thought the DVD player had jumped over an area of the movie, so I backed it up and tried again. There was no DVD skip... the music "skip" appeared to be an edit. So I stuck a recent VHS tape in the VCR and the exact "skip" (edit) was also on the tape. There is NO question in my mind that the film was altered.

In the overall scheme of life, this is a minor issue. For whatever reason, it really bothers me that somebody, somewhere knew enough about what is "appropriate for me" to cut a John Wayne scene from a classic movie. So, I want an unedited version, for posterity, if nothing else.

It is really too bad when they edit parts out of movies, John Wayne or any other movies. I have found that with most DVD's you get the whole uneditted movie.

Smokey,
I just bought the Collectors's Edition of The Quiet Man on DVD and watched it one time through, after it was over I put on the option that has Maureen O'Hara talking about the movie and cast as you veiw the movie. This was quite a different touch but I enjoyed it very much. Now after watching the movie twice I cannot remember if that scene was cut out ( I must be having a Blonde Moment). But thank you for giving me a reason to watch it a third time in two days. I will let you know shortley.

Smokey,
Their are 3 ways to watch the Quiet Man on the collectors edition. I have seen more scene's that have been edited out from my VHS version. Does anyone else have the collectors edition?

I have the version of The Quiet Man in the John Wayne Collection. the special features mentions that it is in the original theatrical version. What scenes are you talking about that are missing? I haven't seen this in a while, and not sure if I can right now, but if you will tell me what's missing, I check it out and see from my version.

Cheers, Hondo B)

Away back at the beginning of this Trading Post thread, I advertised that I wanted to get an unedited version of "The Quiet Man", description as follows:

I have already purchased two VHS and one DVD version of The Quiet Man, and all have been edited, and in such a "non-professional" manner that the edit is obvious.

Of all the responses to this request, nobody owns or has even seen, such an unedited version! There has to be a story here!

In this day of electronic, digital genius, I'm sure we could "re-create" the scene with a little help from McLintock, and re-insert it in its rightful place.

What do you think?

I had to live with the German version for so long, and you know, they used to just cut out what might concern the public opinion. The Quiet Man suffered: they cut all the jokes about religion, they cut the scene of Old Man Tobin getting up from his deathbed to see the fight, and so on. They changed the meaning of dialogue. Therefore, that film never became as popular over here. But when I finally purchased the first VHS of it, it was all there, it wasn't cut on the Laserdisc as well - it's the same version as in the original 35mm-print. So what you have must be a newer edition. Try to get one of the older tapes.

We just finished watching our copy of The Quiet Man, and there is definitely not a spanking scene, but the cut (jump) to which Gary refers is very obvious.

Itdo, are you saying that you have the whole thing, which would include the spanking scene? Just how long is that missing scene? One reason I ask is that in a documentary following the movie, one of the things they talk about is scenes that were cut, and made reference to the movie being 2 hours and 9 minutes long, which would be 129 minutes, which is the listed run time of our movie. Are they listing the original run time, or is that scene so short that it would hardly decrease the total time?

Wouldn't it be great if the cottage in the movie was still standing and opened as a museum? Oh, to dream . . .

Hello Roland

I know there is no better person to ask than you but I just want to repeat something that Chester asked is there a spanking scene in "The Quiet Man" or are you simply referring to the scene where Duke hits Mary Kate a gentle kick on the behind I am very interested, however I am so happy with the vesrion of "The Quiet Man" that I have that I wouldnt want it to be changed at all as I am pretty sure nothing has been cut from it.

Regarding political correctness is it not simply incorrect to say what another person should and shouldnt see within a movie, in my opinion its completely disgraceful to do such things.

You might want to go to the general discussions about this topic. I wanted to start a new topic with what I found in The Quiet Man.

With Kevin reorganizing the message board and adding some new categories, it seemed appropriate to bring ths topic here, as it definitely qualifies for this particular category, and there was some interesting reading here.

Enjoy!

Is the print of the collector's edition any better than the previous releases

I have had the Korean import as well as the official version that came as part of a John Ford Boxset and in my opinion the print didnt look as good as VHS copy in terms of colour and clarity.
