Hi All,
There was a documentary about Humphrey Bogart on TV over here in the UK a couple of days ago, and it told what i thought was a very funny story about Bogie and the Duke.
Bogie was married, before Bacall, to a woman named Mayo Methot. Mayo was an alcoholic which in turn drove Bogie to drink, the slanging matches between Bogie and Mayo became legendary. Anyway, as the story goes, that the Duke was sitting at a restaurant/bar in Hollywood called " The Athletic Club", when in staggers Bogie swaying around. He sits next to the Duke and the Duke says"Hi" to Bogie and thinks to himself boy is this guy drunk. After a few moments Duke notices something sticking out of Bogie's back, it's a knife!!! Mayo in a drunken rage has stabbed Bogie in the back and he's going around town showing anyone who's interested the knife in his back seeing the reaction on peoples faces. Duke was all for calling an ambulance but Bogie wouldn't hear of it, he thought it was funny. Walking around with a knife in his back.
