I was just wondering what happened to the photo gallery and member map?

Hi,

Thansk Kevin for all your work.

However, from what I have discovered so far,
it would seem that all the picture attachments, have been lost,
and also the internal board inter-thread links,
that were in place!!
I don't know about others, but to me that represents
many, many hours of work, gone down the drain!

The posts are now totally devoid of the captions
and attachments!!

Also, many of the threads are incomplete, with whole sections, gone!!

e.g. In 'Pals' The Top 3 Lists, all that's left of this extensive list is the composers!
In Movie Locations- Generally, parts of the original threads are missing.

The Studios, for example now only shows Warner Brothers, the
links to the back-lots etc, gone!!!!!

Is the anyway we can go back into the old system and extract the threads in their complete form?

I am not a happy bunny!!

Hi Kevin

You did a great job setting up this new messageboard (and to do it so quickly).

I would like to alert all users to the fact that in order to send and or receive private messages users will need to switch these features on within their control panel.

The gallery and map sections are gone for now.

There are simular options available to us with the new system, that I'll be exploring in the near future. The photo gallery we did have had some security flaws in it that could have been used to deface the site.

The whole idea is to go with a more secure board and try to avoid unsecure addons.

The threads imported over, you'll need to set the "Display Options" at the bottom left to view threads from the beginning. Once you do that then the threads show. I'm searching for the button in the admin section to make the site display everything.

As for the inter-links, and the picture attachments, that is something that didn't work like it was suppose too. That is an issue that I'm still working on. I can understand your disappointment with this, and hopefully I can find a easy solution for this. I'll keep you posted.

Before it would only show you the posts from the last 24 hours, now it just shows all in order of latest thread posted in first.

Kevin,
If at all possible, can you fix the "Read" and "Unread" indication so there's more contrast between the two. It's sorta hard to distinguish which is which right now. Maybe have the "Unread" posts a bright blue or red or some such.

If you go to the bottom of each forum you will see a box called "Display Options" set the boxes as the following:

<-------------------------->

Sorted By: Last Post Time
Sort Order: Descending
From The: Begining

<-------------------------->

if you do that, the threads will display just like they did on the old board. Incidentally, is there any way to save that setting so that you don't have to reset it every time you open a new forum?

Is all of them displaying alphabetically? Or only a few? I did a spot check in the settings and the forums I checked where set to sort via 'Last Post Time'.

All of the forums are displaying alphabetically. There are posts that have been inactive for years at the very top of the forums, just under the "Sticky" threads.

Kevin,

Where exactly can you adjust this? I looked at the page you gave, and all I saw under the "Thread Display Options" section was this:

Check it now, the board "should" be displaying threads in descending order by last post. Let me know if it doesn't. Also, clear you web browser cache before you refresh the page.

Stumpy,

I have installed a new theme which I think is easier on the old eyes.:yeaahh:

This blue/green theme is now the default theme for the site and the theme that people see when they first visit the site.

You can choose (for now) a different theme by using the drop down menu located at the bottom left of the page.

If and when the photo gallery does make a comeback, will it be possible to recover the images that were uploaded under the old system? I know both arthur and ethan had uploaded a large quantity of high-quality Duke-related images. I really enjoyed looking through what was available there.

Also, I noticed that the board now appears to be set to a fixed width, instead of expanding and contracting to fit in a browser window. Is there any way to adjust this?

Yes, that is my plan to import the existing photos back into the members albums.

I made an adjustment to the theme which allows it to narrow up even more. But it will only narrow up to a point.

Would it helpful to add afew more direct links to the different forums from the left menu of the homepage?

Hi Senta,

I sorry that your not liking the new look and feels of the site. After messing with this new board system for a few weeks I must say I have completely forgotten the old board system. Like probably everyone here, I had gotten use to the old board setup, even down to the recent post link that was located at the top right of the old board. But change is healthy, and causes us to explore. So I hope you give this new system some time, because in the end I think you'll like it as much.

I was thinking of having the homepage like this http://dukewayne.com/forums.php as it was on the old messageboard.

Would it also be possible to change the location on the screen where a posters name etc is stored possibly down the left hand column as with the old board as it seems a little cluttered and out of the way where its currently positioned at the top of the screen.

Some folks would gripe if they were hung with a new rope, Kevin. Personally, I think you've done a great job of getting the new system up and running. What they don't seem to understand is that it'll need a few days (or weeks) to iron the bugs out.

Kevin,

Here's a question - on the right of each post, it lists stats about the user, and one of the items is that little gray box, which stands for "reputation" - what's that all about? I searched the FAQ, but there was no reference.

Hi Kevin

I was thinking of having the homepage like this http://dukewayne.com/forums.php as it was on the old messageboard.

I do like the home page the way it is, and there is a reason. I'm wanting to have the main page setup to be a John Wayne Portal of sorts offering a combination of the latest threads from the board to the latest news articles from the related news thread, and any thread that would be of interest to JW fans. I think Arthur's On this day or another similar thread would or could be featured on it. Plus, I'm looking to get the site ranked better on the major search engines, and this is just a small peace of what I'm planning to do behind the scene to optimize the site.

:agent:

"seems a little cluttered" ? Having it on the left narrows the member info, whereas having it across the top both separates each post better, plus, it gives more room to have the info.

Chester :newyear:

That is a feature that hasn't been fully "turned on" and is currently only viewable by the moderators. It basically is a system where members can add positive and negitive marks or points to other members of the site. Here is the list from bad to great.

Reputation Level
User is infamous around these parts
User can only hope to improve
User has a little shameless behaviour in the past
User is an unknown quantity at this point
User is on a distinguished road
User will become famous soon enough
User has a spectacular aura about
User is a jewel in the rough
User is just really nice
User is a glorious beacon of light
User is a name known to all
User is a splendid one to behold
User has much to be proud of
User has a brilliant future
User has a reputation beyond repute

This is something that I have chosen to leave it off for now.

I think what Robbie means is that for a new visitor unfamiliar with the site, it may not be immediately apparent that this is a message board. The current homepage makes it just look like another John Wayne fan site. I think he's worried that potential new visitors may just click right off the site without ever going into the "Forums" section. Robbie, please correct me if I misinterpreted what your were saying, but that was my initial thought when I first saw the new homepage. It took me a while to find the "Forums" section at first. Folks unfamiliar with the site may not find it at all.

Kevin
December 28th, 2006, 10:56 PM
True to a point, but all the links on the new homepage are forum posts. It doesn't appear to be a forum in a traditional way, but all content on the homepage is from forum threads.

Hum... maybe add a member block for the homepage, alone with more obvious links to the forum.php page.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm not discounting them, and I'm considering all ideas.

Just a thought, but maybe the "Recent Threads" section could be moved above the "News" section. That might help clear things up a bit. A bigger, more obvious link to the "Forum" section would help as well.

You have understood me correctly, upon my first viewing of the board I was unsure how to get to the messageboard section. I like that aspect of the old board which meant that when a user typed in dukewayne.com they were brought straight into the main boards.

Kevin if you are planning to make dukewayne.com a central point for perspective fans to gather then a change in the random pictures used may be an idea. I don't feel it is appropriate to have the picture of Duke looking very sick during his last public appearance presenting the oscar for the Deer Hunter on the hompeage of a John Wayne tribute forum,

Regarding the user name I think via the use of the different colours it makes the user name look seperate from the post they make. I think that it is much better the way it looks when a user hits the post reply button and scrolls down the screen to remind themselves of what a previous user has said. This observation however is meerly cosmetic and has no great bearing on the board.

There are many aspects of the new board that I like such as messages informing me of how many posts have been made since my last visit so I'm not being one sided.

But change is healthy, and causes us to explore.

I suppose you're right, but I meet again the conservative part of my nature that doesn't like changes ;-)

A couple of questions: could we get more smilies? The regular ones, like wink and LOL? The smilie box does say "more" and the pull-down list "show all", but using those options nothing happens, no more smilies.

On the front page, among users on-line I noticed a name I know and wanted to check if there's anything more about this person, but clicking the name I learned I was banned seeing more, and the name was not even on the members' list. Can you be a hidden member?

Please can we have the attachments and internal board links restored.

Whilst I understand the the euphoria and the advantages of the new format.
it is more than disappointing, that the many images that Arthur, Bill, and others took
many hours to post, have been lost!!

I feel, it has ripped the heart and soul out of the many threads,

leaving for example the

'Dukes Stories' 'On this Day' and ' Actor of the Month-

Starting to get the feel of the new board now and I think most of the teething problems are ironed out or getting there.

Nice to see the number of members visiting each day plus the proportion of active members a healthy 10% plus which is very good for a forum.

What is the criteria for definition of active?

Anyway well done for all those involved and thank you for all your hard work.

Hi Kevin,

A lot of the threads will not let me edit
bringing up the message

'The text is too long, Please reduce it to 10000'

although the original text is probably already over that limit!!
This didn't happen on the previous board,
where the only restriction was the capacity of attachments,
of which the limits were easy to work within!

This will impede my attempts to bring the old threads back to
the level they were before!

Can anything be done to increase the capacity, to enable editing
of these longer threads, I would have thought doubling it to
say 20000 would do the trick!!

Would it be possible when selecting the 'edit' button to be able to edit the title of the post as well.

Hi Kevin

I ran the spell checker on a post I made and I noticed that it highlighted just about every word I wrote. I know my spelling can be quite appalling at times but there were many words I had spelt correctly e.g. 'book' that the spell checker highlighted.

I can as moderator by choosing the "advance" button on the edit form, but I'm not sure if you can. You can give it a try and see it the board gives you that option on your own thread.

Hi Kevin

We are unable to edit titles as I goofed the spelling in the title of an earlier thread and I was unable to correct the spelling later although I was able to edit other parts of the post.

Hi Kevin

Several times today I tried accessing the board but was unable to for varying reasons, one being a database error. Were you working with the board as this may explain why it was down.

Nope. Had issues with the server that was unrelated to the dukewayne site. The database errors was a result of the continued issues.:uhoh:

But, hopefully the whole thing will settle down now.

Thanks for that response and today I have had no problems at all accessing the site.

Incidentally the advanced features do allow the user to edit the heading, thanks for informing me of that as well.

I went to reply to an old thread earlier but I was informed that I could not as it was over 700 days old, can this be altered to allow users to reply to old threads.

You can reply, but you have to tick the little box before you submit.

If and when the photo gallery does make a comeback, will it be possible to recover the images that were uploaded under the old system? I know both arthur and ethan had uploaded a large quantity of high-quality Duke-related images. I really enjoyed looking through what was available there.

ejgreen77,

I've been looking into this and at this time there isn't a way to effectively import these images into the new gallery. It looks like we'll have to start fresh again in the gallery.

The nice thing about the new gallery is that it's really a free image hosting service for members because the different links that it provides you (found under the image) can be used on other sites as avatars, profile pictures, etc. And you can store images there for personal achiving and set the images as private which will block the images from being viewable by anyone.

So I hope that arthur & ethan will start uploading some images back to their personal image space soon. Plus, if you haven't noticed, you can see if a member has images in the gallery by looking under their name in any thread post they make.

Hi,

I have already up- loaded photos, and if you notice
it shows I have 50.
This at the moment appears to be the limit.

Hi Kevin

The tickbox did indeed allow me to reply to older posts, thanks for informing me of that feature.

I've noticed during the past couple of days the board has been off line quite a bit due to database errors, is this a problem that can be addressed?

Thanks again

Sorry for the hassles that this has caused.

Let me say thanks to all for your patience during this time! Happy posting!!:lamo:

I have increased it to 100 images. We'll see how that goings. I can increased it more but if a ton of members use it and load up 100 images, well you see where I'm going with this... There are space limits. :ohwell:

Hi Kevin,

Hoped you enjoyed your vacation.
I was away at the same time!

Kevin, when I log on I have to
enter my user name/passport everysingle time,
even though the box 'Remember Me' is ticked!

I don't have this poblem on any other site,
is it something at the board end, or my end, that needs adjusting?

Why not publish the two popular sites that allow you to host images for free. Then in here all members have to do is put links or thumbnails like I do for all my images.

I use Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/). I do pay extra for mine but I get unlimited bandwidth and can host up to 5 GB of images. A free account gets 1 GB of space and 10 GB of monthly bandwidth. it would put less strain on your server.

Or there is ImageShack (http://imageshack.us/) which is also popular. I'm not sure what the limit is on ImageShack but I know Photobucket also lets you upload video files.

Not sure. Have you tried clearing you cache in your browser? Also, are you visiting the site each time using the same url like: www.dukewayne.com (http://www.dukewayne.com) or just dukewayne.com?

Using dukewayne.com and then visiting using www.dukewayne.com (http://www.dukewayne.com) can cause you to enter the login again.

Those are fine options, but the only issue I've found is that over time the images can become broken and cause the image to change to the generic Photobucket or ImageShack image.

That only happens if the person removes the image or gets rid of his account. If you remove old images on the server doesn't the same thing happen to old posts? Just a thought... could be used as a reminder to contact the person to find out if they are still around or still interested in the board.

Hi,

I was wondering why some posters have their location mentioned, whilst others don't? and what we should do if we would like our location included.

Thanks, Chris.

Chris,

If you look at the top of the page, you should see a link for "User CP" which stands for User Control Panel. When you get to that page, look at the links on the left side of the screen and click on "Edit Profile" and you can input all kinds of information there.

Feel free to ask any other questions you may have, and I hope this information helps.

Kevin,

I noticed that we now have a YouTube tag that allows us to embed YouTube videos into our posts. Is there any way for us to have a similar feature that would allow us to embed clips from Google Video into posts?

Just wondering, thanks
