View Full Version : John Wayne - Film Magazines
arthurarnell December 24th, 2006, 09:58 AM Hi
Following the demise of the 'On This Day' column. I would like to try something slighly different, not quite 'on this day', not quite 'pals of the saddle'.
As a kid I collected the weekly magazine Picturegoer which ran from about 1930 - to the mid or late 60s before winding up. Like all kids not realising that one day these would become collectable I used to cut them up and stick the pictures in books etc and throw what was left away.
Nowadays they are easily available on e bay and although at the cost of a few pound seach rather than the 3 or 4 pence they originally were, they are a good read.
More to the point the front cover of the magazines often contains a picture of a star many of whom appeared in John Wayne pictures as co-workers and thee are many articles on both these co-workers and also on John Wayne contained in the magazines.
We (the board) have a definitive list of John Wayne books and also a definitive list of John Wayne Music what I would like to do is start a thread on John Wayne's appearances in film magazines hoping that it might be amusing and more to the point imformative if people want to get any of these magazines as as I have said many of them are freely available on ebay.
If everyone is happy I will (if I can) show the front cover showing the date of issue giving a rough breakdown as to what is in each magazine contains.
From there I assume that there are other film mgazines in existence other than Picturegoer (Picture Show for instance) in UK and obviously some in the US. If we all pool our knowledge we will build up a picture of the life of John Wayne in numerous aspects of his life.
Again it is for every one to contribute to make it informative and fun. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.
Regards
Arthur

Hi.
This Picturegoer Magazine dated May 6th 1950 has a good front cover picture of Joanne Dru from She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. Inside there is the story of the film (with pictures) and articles on Julian Dallas (Known to Americans as Scott Forbes) and Cyd Charisse.
There is also a John Wayne related article titled 'Nearly Not Quite' about stars who almost got a Oscar.
Any additions would be more thn welcome, so look through your lofts.

Arthur
Robbie January 14th, 2007, 09:26 AM Hi Arther.
This sounds like a good idea.
I have the Empire magazie, special collectors edition, charting the 'Greatest Action movies ever'. There is a small picture in black and white of John Wayne on the back cover of the magazine alongside Michael Caine and Steve McQueen to name but two.
The book reviews two of John Waynes movies namely the Searchers and Stagecoach. The reviews are rather good and include pictures, the review of the Searchers also includes a large picture of John Wayne riding out of an Indian camp in the Searchers with Ward Bond in the background, the fascinating thing about this picture is that I believe it is a deleted scene. I also believe as this thread develops we will uncover further deleted scenes in picture format from John Waynes movies.

I hope you're right about the interest. I don't know what happened to the picture it seemed to go on alright then is replaced with a red cross. perhaps I haven't done it right.

Hoping for better luck this time.
This edition of Picturegoer dated October 8th 1955 besides having Anita Ekberg who was signed by Batjac-on the front cover and appeared in Blood Alley, also a picture of Lyle Bettger articles on the Spirit of St Louis with James Stewart. Mainly it has a two page part one of three articles (althouh at the time I didn't know that) on the John Wayne Story titled Mr NoBody Special.
I bought it at a film Fayre in Westminster. On the way home I opened the packet and discovered that it was spread over more than one article. More about that later.

So far so good. The following week dated October 15 1955 Picturegoer followed up with part two covering Waynes appearances in The Big Trail and early films. Other non related articles included introducing Vic Morrow, Laurence Harvey Glynis Johns, Diana Dors and Montgomery Clift.
This edition was purchased at Camden and again on the train I looked at it and to my horror found it was the second article of a total of three.
More next.

This issue of Picturegoer dated October 22 1955 features the British actress Belinda Lee on the front cover. Besides completing The John Wayne story, it has a big article on Rory Calhoun, the making of the film Privates Progress, Richard Todd, and Mike Todd on Around The World In Eighty Days.
I am not particularly religious and definately do not believe in the physic.
But on a stack of bibles I will swear that the following story is completely true.
I went up to London some months later with the express desire of attending a film Fayre at Camden and finding the third part of the magazine. I paid my entrance fee walked up the stairs.
Opposite me as I walked in was a table with one Picturegoer magazine on it. I looked at it and imagine my astonishment when I found it to be the issue I wanted. I paid the man the money commenting at the time I have just travelled eighty miles to buy this.

A change from the Picturegoer Magazine a sister magazine around at the same time was Picture Show and looking back, it was possibly superior in content if not in quality of paper.
This one is dated August 27th 1955 and photoplays of the Sea Chase and 2000 Leagues Under The Sea are on the centre pages. Stories about Dirk Bogarde, a full pagepicture of Rosemary Clooney a Film Star Birthday Book and pen pictures of stars.
