Hey everyone! I have been watching Chisum after getting it in from DeepDiscountDVD.com and really enjoyed the ending. ;) I haven't picked an ending yet, but was interested in knowing what you thought is a great ending. :) I know that I listed only nine, and you might add other titles that are not listed. That's alright. Just pick other, and tell us what you think is the best ending. Comments are welcomed. :D

<_< BTW, this is a fun poll.

Enjoy!

in they were expendable the ending was so like the man wanting to give up his seat to freedom and life for another but being told that he has to stay because there are more important things for him to do.

Hello,
This is my very first post. I voted for Chisum, I really loved that movie. The beginning fading from picture to movie, and the ending fading from movie to picture.

I voted and picked The Searchers, because he wanted the ending to be a tribute to Harry Carey, which I know is a classic. I liked others, but will pick that one.

I voted for Stagecoach. I really liked the buildup and the actual ending itself. When Doc Boone tells Plummer to put down the shotgun, it's classic Ford. Fight it out on the level.

Yeh i agree chisum i good " were ever mans been gods already been there" great lines and true also i like endings that leave you thinking like sea chase you kind of wander did he win the chase or was he a good captain and go down with his ship i guess he won anyway no matter which way you look at it.

The AFI American Film Instutute voted The Alamo in their list of their 100 or 50 (forgot the actual number) best Film Endings Ever. Couldn't agree more. Try to remember who directed that piece but he must have been one hell of a director...

I loved the ending of The Shepherd of the Hills. In the movie, Duke believes and is told that he is cursed untill he revenges the wrong did his family by his father. Harry Carey comes into the hills and makes himself loved by the hill folks while hiding the fact that he is Duke's father. Duke comes to admire Harry but when he finds out the truth, is driven by the demon in him to revenge the wrong he was told. But Harry shoots him first to keep him from making the same mistake he had made many years ago. While Duke is laying unconcious on a bed, he awakes to hear Harry explaining why he had vanished long ago to Betty Field's character (Sammy). It is then that the demon that drove him is released and he can go about a normal life with Sammy that he thought impossible before. A great movie with a great ending. dukefan1

Wow, dukefan1,

I haven't seen The Shepherd of the Hills. Makes me want to see that one. That is one of the few of the "A" movies that I haven't seen yet. Hope to be able to see that soon.

Wow difficult question but maybe at this precise moment in time it would be El Dorado because all the bad guys meet their maker in a short and well directed scene and we see the two big men injured and walking along the street at the end.

Other great endings include

1. Stagecoach
2. Searchers
3. Rio Bravo
4. The Quiet Man
5. The Shootist (A fitting end for a legend)

I'm going with "The Searchers" That scene at the end of the film, when The Duke is standing in the doorway, Eveybody has gone there separate ways, he puts his hand on his wrist (tribute to Harry Carey) and then turns and walks away and the door closes. After all he has done he still has no place to call home. WOW!! if that doesn't bring a lump to your throat then, your dead. a great scene in a great movie.

I voted other... my choice is "Sands of Iwo Jima" so many things happen at the end of that movie... Stryker dieing, the reading of Stryker's letter, the flag going up, the young pup who didn't like Stryker starting to take on Stryker's role... ya just got to love it...

The Searchers, of course. But since it is a perpetual favorite of mine, I also like the end of El Dorado, especially the way Nelson Riddle's music comes in and leads to an instrumental version of the title song. Love that movie.

Mine is the shootist, I believe Duke out did himself and he could relate since he was dying of cancer. What a way to go out for a dying cowboy in a gun fight, like a soldier to die from the last bullet of the last battle of the last war. It doesn't get any better that that.

I'll have to say that it was The Shootist. Just seeing him laying there on the floor under his coat and the music that was playing and the camera angles gave me sort of an eerie feeling. You knew that this was the end of an era. One that will never come this way again.

Howdy,
For me, the best ending is in True Grit, it makes me chook up everytime! However, I do like the ending picture of him on top of the hill in Chisum. Those 2 images are how I like to remember him! He was so AWESOME!
Off of the subject, Ringo, just to let you know, I am a Texan too. At least for a little while, my husband and I moved to McAllen Texas 6 months ago for his job, and will be here for at least another year. So for the timebeing I am a Texan too, who knows what I will be next! HA HA

I have to say the ending to The Shootist is a very fitting ending to Duke's life and career. He died the way he wanted to, with his boots on and with his honor and dignity intact. 28 years later he is still loved by millions and ranked as the #1 actor of our history. And to go out with Ron Howard, is only fitting with an icon like Duke. Ron has become an excellent director.

gt12pak
July 6th, 2007, 05:37 PM
And just the way he nodded at the camera, as if to say thank you to his fans for all the years of support, it almost looked like he was saying good-bye.

Maybe he was.

And to go out under the direction of Ron Howard, is only fitting an icon like Duke.

Don Siegel directed The Shootist. At that point, Ron Howard was still just an actor, he hadn't really began his directing career yet.

DakotaSurfer
July 7th, 2007, 05:22 PM
That's what I meant... Ron Howard back then really had insight. He has done some excellent movies since but he had been around the industry for a long time. He made a good fit in the movie. He was already directing back then so I'm sure it helped him to be doing both. He directed three big movies :stunned: by the time he did The Shootist...

Cards, Cads, Guns, Gore and Death (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402089/) (1969)
Deed of Daring-Do (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064218/) (1969)
Old Paint (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402411/) (1969)His brother Clint was in all three of them but... hey - he directed them.

Ethan

Now with my name being Ethan, you would think I would have voted for the Searchers, and although it is probably his most remembered ending, I in fact voted other choosing instead " The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". Although I know Duke is not actually in the ending of the movie, his character has the biggest impact. Ranson Stoddard would not be Senator, Hallie would not be able to read and write, and the territory surrounding Shinbone would still be a wilderness, instead of a garden.
My vote for this is because when he tells Stoddard that HE killed Valance ( and the sly little grin he gives, as if to say you can't take that away from me. Although he has already lost Hallie, and lost himself for doing the unspeakable, the shooting of Valance), and the music playing as he walks away from the convention ( the band playing " Hail Hail, The Gangs all here) , sadly excluding the one person who made it all happen.
Just my two cents!!!!

Regards
Ethan

Might have been true but Duke didn't plan to finish his career that way. He wanted to do more, he just couldn't, due to his health.

I haven't seen this thread in a while, and with the numbers, I am surprise with the results. I would have thought that The Searchers would run away with this, but it seems that the members of this message board likes True Grit better. Very interesting!

Hi Everyone

As usual the term "best" is very subjective, do you mean best acting, story or whatever?

For me it has to be TRUE GRIT

Why

1. JW did the jump over the fence himself whilst not in the best of healthActor Glen Campbell will always remember his True Grit co-star John Wayne cleared a fence on horseback. Glen was speaking at the American Movie Classics' John Wayne Film Festival which started Thursday, recalling how worried director Henry Hathaway was, about the financial implications of Wayne getting hurt during the 1969 movie. Campbell says, "Duke insisted that he do his own jump. He shouted at Hathaway, 'I ain't having no one jump for me. I'll do my own stunts, thank you. Besides, I can jump a four-rail fence without a horse.' So John Wayne rolled in the saddle as his nag ran at a gallop in the snow toward the chest-high fence. The horse stretched, Duke rose, and the two cleared the fence with plenty of room." The AMC film festival features 35 films starring the screen legend Wayne, who died aged 72 in 1979. Campbell gushes, "Acting alongside the larger-than-life star I'd grown up idolizing back in Delight, Arkansas, was truly one of the most memorable experiences of my life."2. Rooster Cogburn character, (JW the man almost) wish we had more like him! and wish he was my best friend.

3. The acting is superb, funny, moving, exciting I laugh and cry at the same time watching this film and always feel cheered up afterwards.

For me the BEST ending "all round".

Thanks, Elly, for pulling that Glen Campbell story out of your hat of many tricks and treats! Makes that ending even more special, knowing that Duke argued to do it himself, and did it so marvelously!

true grit definitely - watching true grit was like going on an adventure with john wayne. it was thrilling and exciting and at the same time you felt safe cos you knew you were with him and he was going to win. after the tension of the final scene, it was a nice, cheerful, happy ending that made you want to watch the film over again

My favourite ending of a Duke movie is in She wore a Yellow Ribbon! Nathan Brittles is brought back to the cavalry, that has been a home to him for his whole life, and as he comes back to outpost all the ladies wear yellow ribbons in their hair for him... Wonderful!

And I like the end of Hatari! The old man gets the young girl in the end and the scene with the baby elephant is fun!
